Data processing and initial results from the CE-3 Extreme Ultraviolet Camera

The Extreme Ultraviolet Camera(EUVC) onboard the Chang'e-3(CE-3)lander is used to observe the structure and dynamics of Earth's plasmasphere from the Moon. By detecting the resonance line emission of helium ions(He+) at 30.4 nm, the EUVC images the entire plasmasphere with a time resolution of 10 min and a spatial resolution of about 0.1 Earth radius(RE) in a single frame. We first present details about the data processing from EUVC and the data acquisition in the commissioning phase, and then report some initial results, which reflect the basic features of the plasmasphere well. The photon count and emission intensity of EUVC are consistent with previous observations and models, which indicate that the EUVC works normally and can provide high quality data for future studies.     

Light-Time Effect in the Eclipsing Binaries GO Cyg, GW Cep, AR Aur and V505 Sgr

Orbital period changes of the eclipsing binaries GO Cyg and GW Cep are explained by the light-time effect for the first time. New minima of the eclipsing binary AR Aur improve the predicted light-time orbit. The light-time orbit with the quadratic ephemeris of the binary matches the new observations of V505 Sgr better than the linear one. As the light-time effect fits in corresponding O − C diagrams of all four systems have been reaching extreme values, the observations of minima times in forthcoming years are highly desirable.     

Geoidal potential free of zero-frequency tidal distortion

It has been proved that the geoidal valueW ₀ is not dependent on the system used for defining the geoid surface. It is the same for the zero-frequency tidal system, mean system and tide-free system. It has been suggested,W ₀ be adopted as primary constant defining the length dimensions of celestial bodies.     

Preliminary Analysis of Photometric Variations of the Central Star of the Planetary Nebula Sh 2-71

We confirm the presence of regular UBV(RI)_C light variations of the object in the center of the planetary nebula Sh 2-71, with an improved period of P = 68.132 ± 0.005 days. The shapes and amplitudes of light curves, in particular colours, are briefly discussed.

A Statistical Model for Predicting the Average Abundance Patterns of Heavier Elements in Metal-Poor Stars

We have collected nearly all the available observed data of the elements from Ba to Dy in halo and disk stars in the metallicity range -4.0 <[Fe/H]< 0.5. Based on the observed data of Ba and Eu, we evaluated the least-squares regressions of [Ba/Fe] on [Fe/H], and [Eu/H] on [Ba/H]. Assuming that the heavy elements (heavier than Ba) are produced by a combination of the main components of s- and r-processes in metal-poor stars, and choosing Ba and Eu as respective representative elements of the main s- and the main r-processes, a statistical model for predicting the Galactic chemical evolution of the heavy elements is presented. With this model, we calculate the mean abundance trends of the heavy elements La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Dy with the metallicity. We compare our results with the observed data at various metallicities, showing that the predicted trends are in good agreement with the observed trends, at least for the metallicity range [Fe/H]> -2.5. 稀疏矩阵技术及其在天测与测地VLBI数据处理中的应用

介绍了稀疏矩阵的四种常见形式以及稀疏矩阵技术在天测与测地VLBI数据处理中的应用。推演了天测与测地VLBI数据综合解算中所用稀疏矩阵形式下待估参数求解和协方差矩阵估算的算法。通过对是否采用稀疏矩阵技术时方程求解 (乘法和加法 )运算对数的估算和比较 ,表明普通最小二乘方法的运算对数约为参数总数的 3次方 ,而采用稀疏矩阵技术时的运算对数近似与参数总数成线性关系 ,从而能够在现代空间对地观测技术的大样本数据处理中显著缩短计算时间。     

Gravitational instability of a quasi-homogeneous plasma cloud with radiation

Gravitational instability of small perturbations propagating through the central area of a gas cloud is discussed regarding the basic state and taking into account radiative pressure. Instability criterion similar to Jean's one is obtained and it was shown that the inhomogeneity can act in two ways, to stabilize or destabilize the system, depending on the value of the second derivative of the basic state temperature.     

The oscillating loop prominence of July 17, 1981

Oscillatory motions of a loop prominence observed on July 17, 1981 are analysed. The oscillations were mainly horizontal, with a period of 8 min. Restoring force was a result of magnetic tension, and assuming a simplified magnetic field configuration the expression for frequencies of oscillations is derived and compared with the observations. Taking the observed period, the strength of the magnetic field permeating the prominence is estimated as 45 G. Finally, the stability of the prominence is discussed.
