Cores and exposed cliff sections in salt marshes around Ho Bugt, a tidal embayment in the northernmost part of the Danish Wadden Sea, were subjected to 14C dating and litho- and biostratigraphical analyses to reconstruct paleoenvironmental changes and to establish a late Holocene relative sea-level history. Four stages in the late Holocene development of Ho Bugt can be identified: (1) groundwater-table rise and growth of basal peat (from at least 2300 BC to AD 0); (2) salt-marsh formation (0 to AD 250); (3) a freshening phase (AD 250 to AD 1600?), culminating in the drying out of the marshes and producing a distinct black horizon followed by an aeolian phase with sand deposition; and (4) renewed salt-marsh deposition (AD 1600? to present). From 16 calibrated AMS radiocarbon ages on fossil plant fragments and 4 calibrated conventional radiocarbon ages on peat, we reconstructed a local relative sea-level history that shows a steady sea-level rise of 4 m since 4000 cal yr BP. Contrary to suggestions made in the literature, the relative sea-level record of Ho Bugt does not contain a late Holocene highstand. Relative sea-level changes at Ho Bugt are controlled by glacio-isostatic subsidence and can be duplicated by a glacial isostatic adjustment model in which no water is added to the world's oceans after ca. 5000 cal yr BP. 相似文献

Changes in size distribution of fresh water nanoscale colloidal matter and associated elements on mixing with seawater 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Changes in size distribution and elemental composition of 0.5-50 nm fresh water colloids during estuarine mixing have been studied by in-laboratory mixing of natural creek water and synthetic seawater, followed by size fractionation with Asymmetrical Flow Field-Flow Fractionation, and online elemental quantification by High-Resolution ICPMS. At least two types of colloids were present in the studied size region; 0.5-3 nm fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM), and >3 nm colloids that were rich in Fe and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Most trace elements were associated in different proportions to these two populations of colloids. Following mixing with synthetic seawater, the >3 nm Fe-rich colloids and CDOM were extensively removed from the studied size region by salt induced aggregation. The degree of removal with increasing salinity was greatest below 2.5‰ salinity, continued to a lesser degree between 2.5‰ and 15‰ salinity, above which only very small additional removal could be distinguished. At 25‰ salinity, the Fe concentration in the 0.5-50 size region had been reduced down to 15% of its original value in freshwater, while the amount of CDOM had been reduced to 55%. On the contrary, the concentration of the 0.5-3 nm FDOM was unchanged by the increased concentration of sea salt. Therefore, colloidally associated Al, P, Co, Cu, Zn, Ce, Lu and Pb were removed from the 0.5-50 nm size region according to their relative distributions between the FDOM and the Fe-rich colloids. Consequently, at 25‰ salinity, the 0.5-50 nm concentrations of Al, Mn, P and Pb, (mainly associated with the Fe-rich colloids) had been reduced down to 13-26 % of their values in freshwater, while the concentrations of Co and Cu (with higher preferences for FDOM) were less reduced, down to 46% and 57%, respectively. Changes in the elemental composition of the remaining colloidal matter were observed, the most pronounced were increased contents of P, Al and Pb in Fe-rich colloidal matter of medium size (∼3-15 nm) and increased Pb content in Fe-rich colloidal matter of larger size (∼5-50 nm). 相似文献

Using sewage sludge as a sealing layer to remediate sulphidic mine tailings: a pilot-scale experiment, northern Sweden 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
At the Kristineberg mine, northern Sweden, sulphidic mine tailings were remediated in an 8-year pilot-scale experiment using sewage sludge to evaluate its applicability as a sealing layer in a composite dry cover. Sediment, leachate water, and pore gas geochemistry were collected in the aim of determining if the sludge was an effective barrier material to mitigate acid rock drainage (ARD) formation. The sludge was an effective barrier to oxygen influx as it formed both a physical obstruction and functioned as an organic reactive barrier to prevent oxygen to the underlying tailings. Sulphide oxidation and consequential ARD formation did not occur. Sludge-borne trace elements accumulated in a reductive, alkaline environment in the underlying tailings, resulting in an effluent drainage geochemistry of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn below 10 μg/L, high alkalinity (810 mg/L) and low sulphate (38 mg/L). In contrast, the uncovered reference tailings received a 0.35-m deep oxidation front and typical ARD, with dissolved concentrations of Cd, Zn and sulphate, 20.8 μg/L, 16,100 μg/L and 1,390 mg/L, respectively. Organic matter degradation in the sludge may be a limiting factor to the function of the sealing layer over time as 85 % loss of the organic fraction occurred over the 8-year experimental period due to aerobic and anaerobic degradation. Though the cover may function in the short to medium term (100 years), it is unlikely to meet the demands of a long-term remedial solution. 相似文献

This paper deals with coping and adaptation processes to natural hazards and (potential) climate change impacts. Selected
response measures to natural hazards are critically reviewed with respect to the actual and potential consequences that these
measures might imply for additional adaptation needs and changes within social-ecological systems. In this context, the author
introduces the concept of first- and second-order adaptation processes in order to underline the cascade process that adaptation
implies, the potentials for failure, and the limits of adaptation. Important aspects of first- and second-order adaptation
processes as well as the issue of the limits of adaptation are illustrated based on observations and empirical work conducted
in Vietnam. In its final part, the paper discusses the findings in light of selected theoretical approaches that might help

To harness hydroelectric power, most of the flow of the Santee River, SC was diverted in 1942 into Charleston Harbor, where shoaling promptly became a major problem. For this reason, most of the diverted flow is scheduled to be rediverted to the Santee within the next decade, increasing the mean discharge of the Santee from 74 to 428 m3s?1. To assess the present hydrogrpahy of the Santee estuary under conditions of moderate discharge, we determined 226 vertical profiles of velocity, salinity, and temperature distributed over 17 stations in February, 1975. We found that 73 and 27% of the discharge reached the ocean via the North and South distributaries, respectively. The 1 ppt isohaline was found no further than 8 km upstream from the mouth, indicating the limited extent of the estuarine zone. The Santee is a partially mixed estuary classified as type 2b. The circulation parameter is approximately 3 and the stratification parameter approximately 0.3. The bulk parameters indicate the importance of tidal, mixing and a weakly developed gravitational circulation. When rediversion is completed, the net salinity in the lower Santee River can be expected to decrease drastically, which in turn is likely to terminate the lucrative oyster and clam fishery. 相似文献

The presence of decapod crustaceans in the Pliocene and Pleistocene (MIS 5e) fossil record of Santa Maria Island (Azores Archipelago) is herein reviewed. Our study raises the number of fossil decapods from this island from one species to 10 taxa (three for the Pliocene and seven for the Last Interglacial). Four of these 10 taxa are reported for the first time in the fossil record, worldwide. A new species of a mud shrimp is also described (Upogebia azorensis n. sp.). Our study suggests that the Plio–Pleistocene decapod assemblages of the Azores did not differ significantly from modern ones, being dominated by species that are today widespread across the Webbnesia ecoregion, the Mediterranean Sea, and the eastern Atlantic shores, including the Azores. As far as can be judged from the limited fossil record, apparently no tropical crab species with a Cabo Verdean/Senegalese provenance reached the Azores during windows of opportunity associated with Glacial Termination 2 or with the initial setting of the Last Interglacial period. This contribution increases the total number of marine taxa reported for the Pliocene and Pleistocene outcrops of Santa Maria Island to 218 and 155, respectively, highlighting the scientific relevance of its palaeontological heritage. 相似文献

The dense tholeiitic Koster dyke swarm, west Sweden, has undergone progressive deformation under amphibolite facies metamorphic conditions. The varying influence of this event on the dyke rock forms the basis for a regional division of the swarm into three sectors: the sectors of igneous dolerites, partly recrystallised metadolerites, and lineated amphibolites, respectively. Systematic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility in the dykes have demonstrated a correlation between the regional pattern of recrystallisation and the pattern of mean susceptibility given as mean susceptibility per 0.5 km2. The transformation of dolerites to metadolerites and finally to lineated amphibolites is accompanied by a marked decrease in the susceptibility, which is related essentially to the degree of alteration of titanomagnetite to sphene + Fe-ions incorporated in the silicates. 相似文献

The chemical composition and toxicity of a water soluble fraction (WSF) of oil versus the underlying water after in situ burning (ISB), has been studied in a laboratory experiment. A system for allowing water sampling after ISB was developed. Seawater samples and oil were collected prior to and immediately after ISB, and chemical analysis was conducted. The chemical characterization of the water showed that the disappearance of water soluble oil components during ISB was insignificant. Acute toxicity tests with the marine copepod Calanus finmarchicus and Microtox® bioassay was performed to establish LC50/EC50 values of the water. The results were compared with regular WAF systems with unburned weathered oil, and indicated no increase in toxicity in the underlying water after ISB. 相似文献
