Rock samples belonging to ten lithological types under different stages of weathering, were collected from different stratigraphical
horizons at Bhagalpur. Their densities and porosities were determined experimentally and the data obtained were fitted empirically
in a linear equation for each lithological type. The slopes of the curves, which were negative in each case, showed that the
increase in porosity for the same decrease in density were in the order, white sandstone > ferruginous sandstone > white claystone
> porphyritic gneiss > quartzite > pegmatite > amphibolite ≅ biotite gnejss > basalt ≅ dolerite. A new weathering potential
index based on the density-porosity data was proposed and the values for a specific stage of weathering for all the lithological

The drainage basin parameters of the groundwater-fed Chhoti Gandak River originating in the terai area of the Ganga Plain
were analyzed using topographical sheets, satellite data, and field documentation with emphasis to its implication for flood
mitigation and recharging of groundwater. The analyses indicate dominance of first order streams, gentle slope gradient, low
surface run-off, low sediment production, high infiltration rate, and low value of basin relief. The low water storage capacity,
spreading of water and concentration of peak discharge in the distal part of the river basin explain that whenever precipitation
is high in the catchment area there is flood in the distal part of the basin. The bifurcation ratio value (4.34) of this basin
describes that the drainage is carved naturally by slope and local relief and not influenced by geological structures like

The Biot linearized theory of fluid saturated porous materials is used to study the plane strain deformation of a two-phase
medium consisting of a homogeneous, isotropic, poroelastic half-space in welded contact with a homogeneous, isotropic, perfectly
elastic half-space caused by a two-dimensional source in the elastic half-space. The integral expressions for the displacements
and stresses in the two half-spaces in welded contact are obtained from the corresponding expressions for an unbounded elastic
medium by applying suitable boundary conditions at the interface. The case of a long dip-slip fault is discussed in detail.
The integrals for this source are solved analytically for two limiting cases: (i) undrained conditions in the high frequency
limit, and (ii) steady state drained conditions as the frequency approaches zero. It has been verified that the solution for
the drained case (ω → 0) coincides with the known elastic solution. The drained and undrained displacements and stresses are compared graphically.

Water and bed sediment samples collected from the Damodar River and its tributaries were analysed to study elemental chemistry
and suspended load characteristics of the river basin. Na and Ca are the dominant cations and HCO3 is the dominant anion. The water chemistry of the Damodar River basin strongly reflects the dominance of continental weathering
aided by atmospheric and anthropogenic activities in the catchment area. High concentrations of SO4 and PO4 at some sites indicate the mining and anthropogenic impact on water quality. The high concentration of dissolved silica,
relatively high (Na+K)/TZ+ ratio (0.2–0.4) and low equivalent ratio of (Ca+Mg)/(Na+K) indicate that dissolved ions contribute significantly to the weathering
of aluminosilicate minerals of crystalline rocks. The seasonal data show a minimum ionic concentration in the monsoon season,
reflecting the influence of atmospheric precipitation on total dissolved solids contents. The suspended sediments show a positive
correlation with discharge and both discharge and suspended load reach their maximum value during the monsoon season. Kaolinite
is the mineral that is possibly in equilibrium with the water. This implies that the chemistry of the Damodar River water
favours kaolinite formation. The concentration of heavy metals in the finer size fraction (<37 μ m) is significantly higher
than the bulk composition. The geoaccumulation index values calculated for Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni and Cr are well below zero, suggesting
that there is no pollution from these metals in Damodar River sediments.

In this paper, similarity solutions for the propagation of strong-plane shock waves in optically-thin grey atmospheres are obtained in the presence of a magnetic field. Density and magnetic field are constant in the undisturbed gaseous medium in front of the shock. In the Indian Himalayan Region predominantly rural in character, livestock is one of the main sources of livelihood and integral part of the economy. Livestock mostly rely on fodder from wild. The diversity, distribution, utilization pattern, nativity, endemism, rarity, seasonality of availability, nutritive values, perceived economic values and pressure use index of livestock have not been studied. The present study attempts to enumerate 150 species of fodder representing trees (51 spp.), shrubs (54 spp.) and herbs (45 spp.). Poaceae (19 spp.) and Fabaceae (13 spp.) amongst families and Salix (6 spp.), Ficus, Clematis, and Desmodium (5 spp., each) amongst genera are rich in species. Maximum species were found in the 1801 ~ 2600 m zone, and the remaining two zones showed relatively low diversity. Out of the 150 species, 109 are used in summer, 5 winter and 36 throughout year. During rainy season, mostly grasses are used as fodder. Only 83 species are native to the Himalayan region, one species, Strobilanthus atropuroureus is endemic and 35 species are near endemic. The nutritive values of the fodder species were reviewed, and economic values and status of the species were also assessed. The pressure use index of the species was calculated on the basis of cumulative values of the utilization pattern, altitudinal distribution, availability, status, nativity and endemism. Amongst the species, Grewia oppositifoilia, Morus serrata, Indigofera heterantha, Quercus leucotrichphora, Ulmus villosa, U. wallichiana and Aesculus indica showed highest PUI indicating high preference and pressure. Season wise prioritization of the species for different altitudinal zones has been done. Artificial neural networks have a wide application in many areas of science and engineering and, particularly, in geotechnical problems with some degree of success due to the fact that the mechanical behavior of rocks are not salient. They are highly nonlinear, quite complex and complicated. While applying neural network in such complicated problems, epoch determination is based on hit-and-trail basis mainly. In this paper, the effect of different number of epochs is shown on the network and a method is proposed to determine the optimum number of epoch with the help of self-organized map (SOM) to avoid overtraining of the network. Data distribution is also done with the help of SOM and a statistical analysis is made to show consistency between training and testing dataset for ensuring the optimal model performance. 相似文献

Proper selection and ranking of Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs) is critical for successful logic-tree implementation
in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. The present study explores this issue in predicting peak ground accelerations at
the rock sites in India. Macroseismic intensity data complemented with limited strong ground-motion recordings are used for
the purpose. The findings corroborate the possible conformity between the GMPEs developed for tectonically active shallow
crust across the globe. On the other hand, the relevant GMPEs in the intraplate regions cluster into two different groups
with the equations of lower ranks catering to higher ground motions. The earthquakes in the subduction zones have significant
regional implications. However, affinity in the ground-motion attenuations between the major interface events (M
W > 7.4) in Andaman-Nicobar, Japan and Cascadia, respectively, is noted. This can be also observed for the intraslab events
in the Hindukush and Taiwan respectively. Overall, we do not observe any significant advantage with the equations developed
using the regional data. These findings are expected to be useful in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis across the study
