Using kinematic wave equations analytical solutions are derived for flow resulting from a storm moving either up or down an infiltrating plane but not fully covering it. By comparing the flow resulting from this storm with that from a stationary storm of the same duration the influence of storm duration, direction and velocity is investigated. It is found that the direction of storm movement, duration and velocity of storms, as well as basin infiltration, have a pronounced effect on the discharge hydrograph. The effect of time dependent bulk viscosity on the evolution of Friedmann models with zero curvature in Brans-Dicke theory
is studied. The solutions of the field equations with ‘gamma-law’ equation of state p = (γ-1) ρ, where γ varies continuously

Determination of crushing strength of granular material is very important for assessing its suitability in various engineering
and industrial applications. Laboratory investigations that would yield stress–strain behaviour, and hence, crushing strength
of the granular material are extremely cumbersome and time consuming. Also, results obtained from these experiments get influenced
by the aspect ratio of the sample, its density, strain rate, size and shape of the grains etc. These difficulties can be overcome
by developing a generalized mathematical model, which is primarily based on the physical properties of the granular material
such as particle-size and specific gravity, for estimating its crushing strength. With this in view, experiments were conducted
on different types of granular materials such as sands, cenospheres (which are found in fly ash and bottom ash) and glass
beads, and the results were used for developing such a model. Details of the testing methodology adopted to achieve this are
also presented in this paper and validation of the proposed model has been done based on the experimental results and the

Modeling and classification of the subsurface lithology is very important to understand the evolution of the earth system. However, precise classification and mapping of lithology using a single framework are difficult due to the complexity and the nonlinearity of the problem driven by limited core sample information. Here, we implement a joint approach by combining the unsupervised and the supervised methods in a single framework for better classification and mapping of rock types. In the unsupervised method, we use the principal component analysis (PCA), K-means cluster analysis (K-means), dendrogram analysis, Fuzzy C-means (FCM) cluster analysis and self-organizing map (SOM). In the supervised method, we use the Bayesian neural networks (BNN) optimized by the Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) (BNN-HMC) and the scaled conjugate gradient (SCG) (BNN-SCG) techniques. We use P-wave velocity, density, neutron porosity, resistivity and gamma ray logs of the well U1343E of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 323 in the Bering Sea slope region. While the SOM algorithm allows us to visualize the clustering results in spatial domain, the combined classification schemes (supervised and unsupervised) uncover the different patterns of lithology such of as clayey-silt, diatom-silt and silty-clay from an un-cored section of the drilled hole. In addition, the BNN approach is capable of estimating uncertainty in the predictive modeling of three types of rocks over the entire lithology section at site U1343. Alternate succession of clayey-silt, diatom-silt and silty-clay may be representative of crustal inhomogeneity in general and thus could be a basis for detail study related to the productivity of methane gas in the oceans worldwide. Moreover, at the 530 m depth down below seafloor (DSF), the transition from Pliocene to Pleistocene could be linked to lithological alternation between the clayey-silt and the diatom-silt. The present results could provide the basis for the detailed study to get deeper insight into the Bering Sea’ sediment deposition and sequence. 相似文献

Earthquakes cause a variety of hydrological phenomena, including changes in the ground water levels in bore wells. The Koyna
region in the peninsular shield of India, hitherto considered stable in terms of seismic activity, has been active since 1967.
More recently, the earthquakes have been localized to the newly impounded Warna reservoir, which is located south of Koyna,
where a burst of seismicity occurred in 1993. The region continues to remain seismically active even after four decades. Twenty-one
bore wells were drilled around the seismic source volume in the region to observe water level changes resulting from earthquake
phenomena. Our studies have shown coseismic anomalous water level changes to be associated with the moderate earthquakes of
April 25, 1997 and February 11, 1998. Our results show that changes in the ground water level in bore wells are correlated
with micro-earthquake activity, both preceding and following moderately sized earthquakes. The results have implications in
enhancing our understanding of earthquake mechanisms. 相似文献

The presence of porosity and reinforcement in a medium is an important factor affecting seismic wave propagation and plays vital role in many geophysical prospects. Also, the presence of salt and ore deposits, mountains, basins, mountain roots, etc. is responsible for the existence of corrugated boundary surfaces of constituent layers. Such facts brought motivation for the present paper which deals with the propagation of SH-wave in a heterogeneous fluid-saturated poroelastic layer with corrugated boundaries lying over an initially stressed fibre-reinforced elastic halfspace. Closed form of dispersion relation has been obtained and is found in well agreement to classical Love wave equation for isotropic case. The effect of corrugation, wave number, undulation, position parameter, horizontal compressive/tensile initial stress and heterogeneity on phase velocity has been analysed through numerical computation and graphical illustration. Moreover, comparative study exploring the effect of presence and absence of reinforcement in half-space on dispersion curve is the major highlight of the current study. 相似文献

Growing demand for potable water for various needs has lead to indiscriminate exploitation of groundwater resources, particularly,
in the terrain where surface water resources are negligible. One such area is an island where groundwater is the only source
of fresh water. Groundwater is the prime source of fresh water on most of the atolls in the world. Groundwater on these islands
is in the form of thin fragile floating lens and is often vulnerable to overexploitation, draught, tidal waves, tsunami and
cyclone resulting in seawater ingress. Sustainable development of this meager source of fresh groundwater for a longer time
becomes a more difficult task on small atolls with a large population depending on this vital resource. To develop a sustainable
management scheme and identify the vulnerable part of aquifer, characterization of the aquifer system on islands is imperative.
Groundwater on an atoll is extremely vulnerable to seawater mixing through natural as well as human activities. One such natural
process is the tides of the ocean. The response of sea tide to the water table on the island offers valuable data as well
as cost-effective means to characterize an aquifer system. Such characterization is vital for the management of groundwater
resources on an atoll. The obtained results have compared well with the parameters obtained through a conventional pumping
test. Therefore, the use of tidal response to the water table, which can easily be recorded, provides a rapid and cost-effective
means to characterization of the aquifer system on the island. 相似文献
