Abstract— We present combined multi‐spectral imager (MSI) (0.95 μm) and near‐infrared spectrometer (NIS) (0.8–2.4 μm) observations of Psyche crater on S‐type asteroid 433 Eros obtained by the Near‐Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)—Shoemaker spacecraft. At 5.3 km in diameter, Psyche is one of the largest craters on Eros which exhibit distinctive brightness patterns consistent with downslope motion of dark regolith material overlying a substrate of brighter material. At spatial scales of 620 m/ spectrum, Psyche crater wall materials exhibit albedo contrasts of 32–40% at 0.946 μm. Associated spectral variations occur at a much lower level of 4–8% (±2–4%). We report results of scattering model and lunar analogy investigations into several possible causes for these albedo and spectral trends: grain size differences, olivine, pyroxene, and troilite variations, and optical surface maturation. We find that the albedo contrasts in Psyche crater are not consistent with a cause due solely to variations in grain size, olivine, pyroxene or lunar‐like optical maturation. A grain size change sufficient to explain the observed albedo contrasts would result in strong color variations that are not observed. Olivine and pyroxene variations would produce strong band‐correlated variations that are not observed. A simple lunar‐like optical maturation effect would produce strong reddening that is not observed. The contrasts and associated spectral variation trends are most consistent with a combination of enhanced troilite (a dark spectrally neutral component simulating optical effects of shock) and lunar‐like optical maturation. These results suggest that space weathering processes may affect the spectral properties of Eros materials, causing surface exposures to differ optically from subsurface bedrock. However, there are significant spectral differences between Eros' proposed analog meteorites (ordinary chondrites and/or primitive achondrites), and Eros' freshest exposures of subsurface bright materials. After accounting for all differences in the measurement units of our reflectance comparisons, we have found that the bright materials on Eros have reflectance values at 0.946 μm consistent with meteorites, but spectral continua that are much redder than meteorites from 1.5 to 2.4 μm. Most importantly, we calculate that average Eros surface materials are 30–40% darker than meteorites. 相似文献
We have observed the leading and trailing hemispheres of Phobos from 1.65 to 3.5 μm and Deimos from 1.65 to 3.12 μm near opposition. We find the trailing hemisphere of Phobos to be brighter than its leading hemisphere by 0.24±0.06 magnitude at 1.65 μm and brighter than Deimos by 0.98±0.07 magnitude at 1.65 μm. We see no difference larger than observational uncertainties in spectral slope between the leading and trailing hemispheres when the spectra are normalized to 1.65 μm. We find no 3-μm absorption feature due to hydrated minerals on either hemisphere to a level of ∼5-10% on Phobos and ∼20% on Deimos. When the infrared data are joined to visible and near-IR data obtained by previous workers, our data suggest the leading (Stickney-dominated) side of Phobos is best matched by T-class asteroids. The spectral slope of the trailing side of Phobos and leading side of Deimos are bracketed by the D-class asteroids. The best laboratory spectral matches to these parts of Phobos are mature lunar soils and heated carbonaceous chondrites. The lack of 3-μm absorption features on either side of Phobos argues against the presence of a large interior reservoir of water ice according to current models of Phobos' interior (F. P. Fanale and J. R. Salvail 1989, Geophys. Res. Lett.16, 287-290; Icarus88, 380-395). 相似文献
Recent R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates in N-like Si VIII are used to derive theoretical emission line intensity ratios involving 2s22p3–2s2p4 transitions in the 216–320 Å wavelength range. A comparison of these with an extensive dataset of solar active region, quiet-Sun, sub-flare and off-limb observations, obtained during rocket flights of the Solar EUV Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS), indicates that the ratio R1= I(216.94 Å)/I(319.84 Å) may provide a usable electron density diagnostic for coronal plasmas. The ratio involves two lines of comparable intensity, and varies by a factor of about 5 over the useful density range of 108–1011 cm?3. However R2= I(276.85 Å)/I(319.84 Å) and R3=I(277.05 Å)/I(319.84 Å) show very poor agreement between theory and observation, due to the severe blending of the 276.85 and 277.05 Å lines with Si VII and Mg VII transitions, respectively, making the ratios unsuitable as density diagnostics. The 314.35 Å feature of Si VIII also appears to be blended, with the other species contributing around 20% to the total line flux.
We present moderate-resolution (lambda/delta lambda = 300 to 370) reflectance spectra of Mars from 2.04 to 2.44 micrometers that were obtained at UKIRT during the 1993 opposition. Seven narrow absorption features were detected and found to have a Mars origin. By comparison with solar and Mars atmospheric spectra, five of these features were attributed all or in part to Mars atmospheric CO2 or CO(2.052 +/- 0.003, 2.114 +/- 0.002, 2.150 +/- 0.003, 2.331 +/- 0.001, and 2.357 +/- 0.002 micrometers). Two of the bands (2.331 +/- 0.001 and 2.357 +/- 0.002 micrometers) appear to have widths and depths that are consistent with additional, nonatmospheric absorptions, although a solar contribution cannot be entirely ruled out. Two other weak bands centered at 2.278 +/- 0.002 and 2.296 +/- 0.002 micrometers may be at least partially mineralogic in origin. The data provide no conclusive identification of the mineralogy responsible for these absorption features. However, examination of terrestrial spectral libraries and previous moderate spectral resolution mineral studies indicates that the most likely origin of these features is either (bi)carbonate or (bi)sulfate anions in framework silicates or (Fe, Mg)-OH bonds in sheet silicates. If the bands are caused by phyllosilicate minerals, then an explanation must be found for the extremely narrow widths of the cation-OH features in the Mars spectra as compared to terrestrial minerals. 相似文献
Transient microstructure in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) has been observed towards Galactic and extragalactic sources for decades, usually in lines of atoms and ions, and, more recently, in molecular lines. Evidently, there is a molecular component to the transient microstructure. In this paper, we explore the chemistry that may arise in such microstructure. We use a photodissociation region (PDR) code to model the conditions of relatively high density, low temperature, very low visual extinction and very short elapsed time that are appropriate for these objects. We find that there is a well-defined region of parameter space where detectable abundances of molecular species might be found. The best matching models are those where the interstellar microstructure is young (<100 yr), small (∼100 au) and dense (>104 cm−3) . 相似文献
The problem of how the corona is heated is of central importance in solar physics research. Here it is assumed that the heating occurs in a regular time-dependent manner and the response of the plasma is investigated. If the magnetic field is strong then the dynamics reduces to a one-dimensional problem along the field. In addition if the radiative time in the corona is much longer than the sound travel time then the plasma evolvesisobarically. The frequency with which heat is deposited in the corona is investigated and it is shown that there is a critical frequency above which a hot corona can be maintained and below which the plasma temperature cools to chromospheric values. An evaluation of the isobaric assumption to the solar corona and the implications of time-dependent heating upon the forthcoming SOHO observations are also presented. 相似文献
This paper reviews the use of computational simulation in plasma physics. It describes a range of numerical models varying from particle models of low density collisionless plasmas to fluid models of high density collision-dominated plasmas. Some applications of these models, particularly to laser-produced and astrophysical plasmas, are described. 相似文献
