One of the most severe industrial catastrophes happened in Kolontár, Hungary, on 4 October 2010. Red mud (bauxite residue) broke through the eroded wall of the red mud reservoir pond “Number X” and flooded the surrounding area. This led to the instant death of 10 people and the injury of more than 100 people. Red mud is enriched in radium and thorium isotopes; therefore, there is a chance that this flooding will increase radionuclide concentrations of soils and also in air. In this study we have examined the site to assess the realistic radiological risks. For the risk assessment the following parameters were determined: gamma dose rate, radon concentration, radionuclide concentration of red mud and air dust concentration. It was found that the radiation dose exposure resulting from red mud contamination was < 0.045 mSv y?1 (excluding radon), which can be considered negligible when compared to the average annual effective dose from natural sources (2.4 mSv y?1).  相似文献

We present Hα observations from ARIES (Nainital) of a compact and impulsive solar flare that occurred on March 10, 2001 and which was associated with a CME. We have also analyzed HXT, SXT/Yohkoh observations as well as radio observations from the Nobeyama Radio Observatory to derive the energetics and dynamics of this impulsive flare. We coalign the Hα, SXR, HXR, MW, and magnetogram images within the instrumental spatial-resolution limit. We detect a single HXR source in this flare, which is found spatially associated with one of the Hα bright kernels. The unusual feature of HXR and Hα sources, observed for the first time, is the rotation during the impulsive phase in a clockwise direction. We propose that the rotation may be due to asymmetric progress of the magnetic reconnection site or may be due to the change of the peak point of the electric field. In MW emission we found two sources. The main source is at the main flare site and another is in the southwest direction. It appears that the remote source is formed by the impact of accelerated energetic electrons from the main flare site. From the spatial correlation of multiwavelength images of the different sources, we conclude that this flare has a three-legged structure.  相似文献

The Sepik River is a major contributor of water, sediment and associated organic loads to the coastal waters of northern New Guinea. With a narrow continental shelf and strong coastal currents, much of this exported material is available for long distance transport into the Bismarck Sea and beyond. CTD casts and associated instrument data showed that the river signature was visible in optical measurements of deep profiles from the Sepik Canyon. Discrete water samples were collected in clean Niskin bottles for organic analysis. Additional high volume samples for lipid classes were collected with Infiltrex samplers deployed on a floating mooring, along with two sediment trap arrays set at 100 and 260 m depth. The Infiltrex samplers were set at 55, 180, 200 and 220 m depth in an effort to target the surface layers and those of westward flowing water in the New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent (NGCUC). The samplers allowed analysis of lipid classes in both dissolved and particulate phases.Analyses of lignin phenols, hydrocarbons, fatty acids, sterols, and n-alcohols in the samples were used to estimate the cycling of the organic input from the river system to the coastal waters and possible entrainment in the NGCUC. The molecular biomarkers confirmed the Sepik River as a significant source of reduced carbon in the near coastal zone influenced by the plume. They indicated that ca. 90% of the organic carbon delivered to the coastal zone is dispersed or degraded, with only about 10% of terrestrial carbon being deposited on to the narrow shelf of coastal sediments. The dissolved lignin phenols provided evidence for desorption of organics from particles with increasing depth. However, this desorption process did not change the C/N ratio of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the deep water of the Sepik Canyon. The hydrocarbons, sterols and fatty acids showed the change from lipid content dominated by phytoplankton in surface layers to zooplankton and bacterial biomarkers in deeper waters. The organic biomarkers provided evidence that some of the dissolved organic input from the Sepik River was injected into fast moving undercurrents. However, concentrations of terrestrial biomarkers were diluted and/or degraded to non-detectable levels within 100 km of the source.  相似文献

The two-dimensional variably-saturated numerical model HYDRUS-2D, previously calibrated to recharge events from an infiltration basin, was used to predict water-table mounding under hypothetical basin design scenarios, and the primary factors that affect water-table mounding were evaluated. Infiltration basins are often utilized in urban environments to recharge stormwater to the aquifer. As a result of localized recharge beneath these basins, mound formation may reduce the thickness of the unsaturated zone available to filter pollutants and may reduce the infiltration rate of the basin. Understanding the effects of various physical factors on water-table mound formation is important for infiltration basin siting. For sandy loam and loamy sand subsurface materials, mound heights increased as the thickness of both the unsaturated and saturated zones decreased. Mound heights increased as the initial soil moisture, basin size and ponding depth increased. A thin sedimentation layer on the basin floor delayed mound formation, but only slightly decreased the maximum mound height. This analysis could be used in future selection of infiltration basin locations; however, the analysis is limited to conditions that represent only a select range of basin design conditions and parameters typical of a glacial till environment in Wisconsin, USA.  相似文献

Groundwater management plans are an important tool for preventing and addressing degradation and depletion of the resource. Through plans, water users and regulators set forth goals and identify strategies to address the needs of multiple resource users while considering physical constraints of the groundwater resource. This research examines the status of groundwater management plans in the United States, identifying in which states groundwater management plans are produced and the circumstances that lead to the inclusion of quantifiable goals in those plans. Findings indicate that legal and regulatory requirements for quantifiable goals can lead to the development of more comprehensive groundwater management plans, and, that such goals can be set even when uncertainties exist.  相似文献

Measurements of surface ozone (O3), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOx=NO+NO2) and meteorological parameters have been made at Agra (North Central India, 27°10??N, 78°05??E) in post monsoon and winter season. The diurnal variation in O3 concentration shows daytime in situ photochemical production with diurnal maximum in noon hours ranging from 51 to 54 ppb in post monsoon and from 76 to 82 ppb in winter, while minimum (16?C24 ppb) during nighttime and early morning hours. Average 8-h O3 concentration varied from 12.4 to 83.9 ppb. The relationship between meteorological parameters (solar radiation intensity, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction) and surface O3 variability was studied using principal component analysis (PCA), multiple linear regression (MLR) and correlation analysis (CA). PCA and MLR of daily mean O3 concentrations on meteorological parameters explain up to 80 % of day to day ozone variability. Correlation with meteorology is strongly emphasized on days having strong solar radiation intensity and longer sunshine time.  相似文献

While there is a recognised need to adapt to changing climatic conditions, there is an emerging discourse of limits to such adaptation. Limits are traditionally analysed as a set of immutable thresholds in biological, economic or technological parameters. This paper contends that limits to adaptation are endogenous to society and hence contingent on ethics, knowledge, attitudes to risk and culture. We review insights from history, sociology and psychology of risk, economics and political science to develop four propositions concerning limits to adaptation. First, any limits to adaptation depend on the ultimate goals of adaptation underpinned by diverse values. Second, adaptation need not be limited by uncertainty around future foresight of risk. Third, social and individual factors limit adaptation action. Fourth, systematic undervaluation of loss of places and culture disguises real, experienced but subjective limits to adaptation. We conclude that these issues of values and ethics, risk, knowledge and culture construct societal limits to adaptation, but that these limits are mutable.  相似文献

Precious metal(Pt,Pd and Au)and Re contents in rocks,ores and flotation concentrates of Siberian(Russia)andMongolian porphyry Cu-Mo and Mo-Cu deposits were studied.The following deposits are discussed:Early Devonian porphyry Mo-CuSora deposit(Kuznetsk Alatau Mountains,Russia)and porphyry Cu-Mo Aksug deposit,(northeastern Tuva,Russia);Triassicporphyry Cu-Mo Erdenetiin Ovoo deposit(northern Mongolia).The samples analyzed include unaltered host rocks of plutons,porphyryrocks of ore-bearing series,different types of altered rocks,mineral separate analyses of molybdenite,chalcopyrite and magnetite,aswell as flotation concentrates.Pt,Pd,Au and Re contents were determined using ICP/MS,AAS and inversion voltammetric analysis.PGE abundances in rocks and poorly mineralized samples span a large range from below detection limit to 65 ppb Pt and 74 ppbPd.Re concentrations in whole rock samples range from below detection limit to 89 ppb.Molybdenite has been shown to be the majorhost phase for Re.The results presented show that Aksug deposit reveals elevated PGE and Au contents in ore minerals and flotationconcentrates.High Pd contents in ores of the Aksug deposit are in accordance with the presence of palladium mineralization in the formof palladium telluride merenskyite(Pd,Pt)Te_2.The variety of precious metals and Re contents in the studied deposits could be caused by a complex interplay of several factors,including importance of primary metal concentrations derived from the source,transport of metals to the deposition area,physicochemical properties of the fluid(fo_2,pH,fs,T,P),and depositional conditions.Higher Re contents in molybdenite andchalcopyrite separates are typical for copper-rich Aksug and Erdenetiin Ovoo deposits.Rhenium concentration in sulfides frommolybdenum-rich Sora deposit is significantly lower.Highly oxidized,Cl-rich fluid style at Aksug and Erdenetiin Ovoo was favorable forhigh rhenium solubility and transport to depositional area.The occurrence of significant precious metals contents at Aksug were likelydue to:1)PGE and Au enriched source,2)favorable fluid style(high fo_2,high Cl-activity),promoting high solubility andtransportation of precious metals in ore-forming fluid as chloride complexes;3)moderately reducing depositional conditions from PGE-bearing solutions containing As and Te,facilitating PGM deposition.As for the porphyry systems at the Sora and Erdenetiin Ovoodeposits,they were probably devoid of precursors favorable for the enrichment in PGE and Au or the role of such precursors wasinsignificant.  相似文献
