In this study, the processes affecting the temperature variability over the Southeastern Tropical Indian Ocean (STIO) during 1958–2000, accomplishing the positive and negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events are analyzed. The upper ocean heat budget analysis of the STIO has been carried out to understand the oceanic process during the termination of the recent strongest IOD events. The three recent strongest positive IOD events (1961, 1994 and 1997) and a strong negative IOD event (1996) are considered for detailed analysis. The heat budget analysis revealed that the positive net-surface heat flux and vertical advection played dominant roles in the termination of 1997 IOD event, whereas horizontal and vertical advections are responsible for the termination of IOD events during 1961 and 1994. The anomalous negative surface heat flux and horizontal advection caused the dipole termination during the negative dipole year 1996. The findings are well supported by the analysis of anomaly correlation between model upper ocean heat content tendency and heat budget components. Significant intra-seasonal oscillations (ISOs) in sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly are seen during the initial phase of termination in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean during 1961 and 1994 IOD events. The influence of ISOs in SST is not so evident during the IOD termination in 1997. It is found that the termination processes have started more than a month prior to the actual IOD termination.  相似文献

A study of the hills around Poona indicates that these hills were formed due to the piling up of pahoehoe type of lavas in rapid succession. Frequently, lava appears to have been squeezed out through narrow cracks and openings and slowly moved down the slopes developed due to the earlier piling up. Successive outbursts of viscous material gave rise to the piled up hills and domes. It is further concluded that the present topography is largely controlled by the nature of eruptive activity and the hills and ridges around Poona are not merely chance survived, circum-denudational features.  相似文献

A comprehensive review of the authors' and their co-workers' results on the fractionation of Rare Earth Elements (REE) during the crystallization and/or recrystallization of Fluorspar is given. The fractionation can be explained as the result of REE complexation in the ore forming solution and systematic changes in distribution coefficients of REE. It is shown that the Tb/Ca and Tb/La ratios are sufficient to characterize pegmatitic (pneumatolytic), hydrothermal and sedimentary fluorspar. This has been confirmed by numerous investigations on various types of deposits.  相似文献

Ultrafine coal dewatering is of great importance to the coal industry due to its impacts on the handling and utilization characteristics of coal products. Commercially available filtration techniques are either ineffective or costly for dewatering of ultrafine coal to the desired moisture level of about 20%. Considerable efforts have been devoted to understanding the dewatering process and developing new technologies for applications in the coal industry. Most of the previous work on ultrafine coal filtration was focused on the final filter cake moisture and few studies have been conducted to investigate the filtration kinetics. The present investigation was undertaken to better understand the kinetics of vacuum filtration of ultrafine coal under various conditions. The filtrate weight was continuously monitored using a precise load cell during the entire filtration process. Operating parameters such as vacuum pressure and reagent conditioning time were examined for their impacts on filtration kinetics. Use of cationic and anionic flocculants showed significant improvement in filtration kinetics. Kinetic data obtained from the study were used to determine the fundamental parameters of filtration such as cake permeability, specific cake resistance, and filter medium resistance using the integrated form of the Darcy's law.  相似文献

This study investigates the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections to tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) and their relationship with the Indian summer monsoon in the coupled general circulation model climate forecast system (CFS). The model shows good skill in simulating the impact of El Niño over the Indian Oceanic rim during its decay phase (the summer following peak phase of El Niño). Summer surface circulation patterns during the developing phase of El Niño are more influenced by local Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies in the model unlike in observations. Eastern TIO cooling similar to that of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is a dominant model feature in summer. This anomalous SST pattern therefore is attributed to the tendency of the model to simulate more frequent IOD events. On the other hand, in the model baroclinic response to the diabatic heating anomalies induced by the El Niño related warm SSTs is weak, resulting in reduced zonal extension of the Rossby wave response. This is mostly due to weak eastern Pacific summer time SST anomalies in the model during the developing phase of El Niño as compared to observations. Both eastern TIO cooling and weak SST warming in El Niño region combined together undermine the ENSO teleconnections to the TIO and south Asia regions. The model is able to capture the spatial patterns of SST, circulation and precipitation well during the decay phase of El Niño over the Indo-western Pacific including the typical spring asymmetric mode and summer basin-wide warming in TIO. The model simulated El Niño decay one or two seasons later, resulting long persistent warm SST and circulation anomalies mainly over the southwest TIO. In response to the late decay of El Niño, Ekman pumping shows two maxima over the southern TIO. In conjunction with this unrealistic Ekman pumping, westward propagating Rossby waves display two peaks, which play key role in the long-persistence of the TIO warming in the model (for more than a season after summer). This study strongly supports the need of simulating the correct onset and decay phases of El Niño/La Niña for capturing the realistic ENSO teleconnections. These results have strong implications for the forecasting of Indian summer monsoon as this model is currently being adopted as an operational model in India.  相似文献

In this study, I deploy an ethnographic approach to analyze the detrimental effects of gentrification on longstanding residents in New Orleans’ Tremé neighborhood. I focus on conflicts between long-established residents and gentrifiers over the use of neighborhood space on a day-to-day basis as a means for examining the consequent changes in neighborhood life. As their neighborhood gentrifies, long-term residents of Tremé must contend with greater policing, the erosion of place-based knowledge, practices, and cultural traditions, the loss of social networks, and the closure of vital neighborhood institutions. These changes in neighborhood life provide a starting point from which to begin to understand the broader effects (beyond displacement) that longstanding residents experience as a result of gentrification.  相似文献

Controversial genetical interpretations on the fluorite occurrences in the leadzinc deposits of the Nördliche Kalkalpen led to the present study. The distribution of the rare-earth elements (REE) in the fluorspar-carbonate assemblages and the fluorspar separates have been determined non-destructively by means of instrumental neutron activation analysis using high resolution γ-spectrometry. A geochemical model describing the distribution of the REE in the two mineral phases of CaCO3 and CaF2 formed syngenetically under marine conditions has been built up in order to elucidate the observed REE abundances in the carbonates and their fluorspar separates. The low and comparable concentrations of REE, the similarity in their relative distribution patterns in carbonate-fluorspar assemblages as compared to those in carbonate sediments observed by other authors and the sedimentary characterization via the Tb/Ca-Tb/La relation criterion revealed by the present study unequivocally suggest a synsedimentary nature of the fluorspar. In addition, the study showed that a diagenetic recrystallization results in a further fractionation of Tb and La with a preferential improverishment in La. Such a phenomenon opens a possible geochemical criterion for the identification of different generations of fluorspars.  相似文献

Multi-channel Scanning Microwave Radiometer (MSMR) onboard 1RS P4 (Oceansat I) measured Brightness Temperature data of the different bands are found sensitive to the surface and the overlying atmosphere to different degrees. A judicious combination of multi-channel data can provide such oceanic/atmospheric parameters as surface wind speed, sea surface temperature, water vapour in the marine atmosphere, etc. This paper highlights results obtained in relation to surface wind speed. Co-location and concurrence of several ocean data buoys in the Arabian Sea with MSMR observations allowed empirical construction of D-matrix coefficients for surface wind speed. With both MSMR and the Arabian Sea buoys functioning for the period of one and a half year (June, 1999 to December, 2000) without interruptions provided a large database. All channels are found to exhibit moderate sensitivity to surface wind speed. MSMR data in the immediate vicinity (within 150 km) of the buoy locations and within a time window of one hour were used. A multi-channel linear equation for surface wind speed was subsequently derived. The equation was subjected to tests with independent data set for the period January - June 2001 over the Arabian Sea and found to be moderately accurate. The empirical equation is expected to be useful for regional applications over the Arabian Sea and over regions closer to west coasts, which might have been flagged out in the operational geophysical data stream. An interesting subset of data revealed the wind signatures of the May 2001 cyclone in the Arabian Sea.  相似文献
