During the Soviet era, Ukraine was an important industrial and agricultural region of the Soviet Union. This industrial and agricultural activity resulted in contamination of Ukraine’s estuaries with legacy anthropogenic pollutants. Investigations on the toxicological effects of this estuarine contamination have been limited. For this research, we measured the toxicity of contaminated sediments from four Ukrainian estuaries to several aquatic organisms over 3 years. Sediment chemical analyses and whole sediment toxicity identification evaluations (TIEs) were also performed to determine the classes of contaminants contributing to toxicity. Toxic sediments were observed in several of the Ukrainian estuaries and chemical analyses of the sediments demonstrated anthropogenic contaminants were widely distributed. Contaminants were also detected in macrobenthic organisms collected from the sediments. Several lines of evidence, including TIEs, indicated hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) were contributing substantially to observed toxicity. This information can guide environmental managers to prioritize portions of the estuaries requiring remediation.  相似文献

A detailed analysis of published data on the N2, Ar, and He content and Ar and He isotopic composition of fumarolic fluids from Vulcano crater (south Italy) supports a model with two endmembers comprising magmatic and hydrothermal fluids with correspondingly low and high H2O content. The magmatic component with the highest 3He/4He and highest absolute concentrations of N2, Ar, and He also has the lowest N2/Ar and N2/He ratios (∼300 and ∼500, respectively). In contrast, the hydrothermal endmember, with the lower 3He/4He and lower absolute N2, Ar, and He abundances, has high N2/Ar (∼1,000) and high N2/He (>3,000) ratios. The hydrothermal component is also characterized by the highest 40Ar/36Ar ratios (>1,000) and is proposed to be the main carrier of metamorphic gases from the arc crust.  相似文献

Palaeotemperatures for the Cretaceous of India and Madagascar have been determined on the basis of oxygen isotopic analysis of well-preserved Albian belemnite rostra and Maastrichtian bivalve shells of from the Trichinopoly district, southern India, and Albian nautiloid and ammonoid cephalopods from the Mahajang Province, Madagascar. The Albian (possibly late Albian) palaeotemperatures for Trichinopoly district are inferred to range from 14.9 °C to 18.5 °C for the epipelagic zone, and from 14.3 °C to 15.9 °C for the mesopelagic zone, based on analyses of 65 samples; isotopic palaeotemperatures interpreted as summer and winter values for near-bottom shelf waters in this area fluctuate from 16.3 to 18.5 °C and from 14.9 to 16.1 °C, respectively. The mentioned palaeotemperatures are very similar to those calculated from isotopic composition of middle Albian belemnites of the middle latitude area of Pas-de-Calais in Northern hemisphere but significantly higher than those calculated from isotopic composition of Albian belemnites from southern Argentina and the Antarctic and middle Albian belemnites of Australia located within the warm-temperate climatic zone. Isotopic analysis of early Albian cephalopods from Madagascar shows somewhat higher palaeotemperatures for summer near-bottom shelf waters in this area (20.2-21.6 °C) in comparison with late Albian palaeotemperatures calculated from southern India fossils, but similar winter values (13.3-16.4 °C); however, the latter values are somewhat higher than those calculated from early Albian ammonoids of the tropical-subtropical climatic zone of the high latitude area of southern Alaska and the Koryak Upland. The new isotopic palaeotemperature data suggest that southern India and Madagascar were located apparently in middle latitudes (within the tropical-subtropical climatic zone) during Albian time. In contrast to the Albian fossils, isotope results of well-preserved early Maastrichtian bivalve shells from the Ariyalur Group, Trichinopoly district, are characterised by lower δ18O values (up to −5.8‰) but normal δ13C values, which might be a result local freshwater input into the marine environment. Our data suggest that the early Maastrichtian palaeotemperature of the southern Indian near-bottom shelf waters was probably about 21.2 °C, and that this middle latitude region continued to be a part of tropical-subtropical climatic zone, but with tendency of increasing of humidity at the end of Cretaceous time.  相似文献

Statistical analysis of the vein thickness distributions of veins in the Cambrian Hellyer volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit, Australia, indicates that the vein thickness data conform to power-law distributions characterised by fractal dimensions D. The most intensely mineralised vein type is characterised by a low fractal dimension, whereas weakly mineralised or barren vein types have elevated D-values. The observed differences in the fractal dimensions suggest that the study of vein thickness distributions may provide a tool in exploration. It is also shown that the field observations can be explained by a model linking the fractal dimensions of the vein thickness distributions with the mechanisms responsible for the formation and evolution of the vein systems.  相似文献

Concepts of gravitational and electromagnetic structures of astrophysical objects is introduced. The two structures have different properties and stationary states. In some cases the electromagnetic structure appears to be dominating. Relativistic jet is a typical attribute of electromagnetic structure. In particular, high degree of the jet collimation is explained freely as a phenomenon of the electromagnetic structure, and hardly can be explained in terms of magnetohydrodynamcs. Interaction between the gravitational and electromagnetic structures is considered and estimated. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

r-modes in neutron stars with crusts are damped by viscous friction at the crust–core boundary. The magnitude of this damping, evaluated by Bildsten & Ushomirsky (BU) under the assumption of a perfectly rigid crust, sets the maximum spin frequency for neutron stars spun up by accretion in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). In this paper we explore the mechanical coupling between the core r-modes and the elastic crust, using a toy model of a constant-density neutron star having a crust with a constant shear modulus. We find that, at spin frequencies in excess of ≈50 Hz, the r-modes strongly penetrate the crust. This reduces the relative motion (slippage) between the crust and the core compared with the rigid-crust limit. We therefore revise down, by as much as a factor of 102–103 , the damping rate computed by BU, significantly reducing the maximal possible spin frequency of neutron stars with solid crusts. The dependence of the crust–core slippage on the spin frequency is complicated, and is very sensitive to the physical thickness of the crust. If the crust is sufficiently thick, the curve of the critical spin frequency for the onset of the r-mode instability becomes multivalued for some temperatures; this is related to avoided crossings between the r-mode and higher-order torsional modes in the crust. The critical frequencies are comparable to the observed spins of neutron stars in LMXBs and millisecond pulsars.  相似文献

The Crab nebula is regarded as one of the most important “cosmic laboratories” in astrophysics, which has made a bigger impact on the development of astronomy than any other single object beyond the solar system. The most intriguing recent result is the completely unexpected discovery of a peculiar “jet-torus” structure in the inner part of the nebula. Similar structures were found later in other Crab-like nebulae. This discovery clearly indicates significant anisotropy of the wind from the Crab pulsar which has been ignored so far in simplified theoretical models of the nebula. Fortunately, the impressive progress in computational relativistic magnetohydrodynamics in recent years has made possible to study the Crab nebula without making such a drastic simplification of the problem. In this paper we present the results of the first study of such kind. They provide a likely explanation of the jet-torus pattern and show that the flow in the nebula is much more complex than it has been widely believed.  相似文献
