Large vesicles record pathways of degassing at basaltic volcanoes   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
Volcanic degassing is directly linked to magma dynamics and controls the style of eruptive activity. To better understand how gas is transported within basaltic magma we perform a 3D investigation of vesicles preserved in scoria from the 2005 activity at Stromboli volcano (Italy). We find that clasts are characterized by the ubiquitous occurrence of one to a few large vesicles, exhibiting mostly irregular, tortuous, channel-like textures, orders of magnitude greater in volume than all the other vesicles in the sample. We compare observations on natural samples with results from numerical simulations and experimental investigations of vesicle size distributions and demonstrate that this type of vesicle invariably forms in magmas with vesicularities > 0.30 (and possibly > 0.10). We suggest that large vesicles represent pathways used by gas to flow non-explosively to the surface and that they indicate the development of an efficient system that sustains persistent degassing in basaltic systems.  相似文献

The water quality of Dianchi Lake declines quickly and the eutrophication is getting serious. To identify the internal pollution load of Dianchi Lake it is necessary to evaluate its sediment accumulation. Sedimentation rates of Dianchi Lake are determined by 137Cs dating. However, 137Cs vertical distribution in sediment cores of Dianchi Lake has special characteristics because Dianchi Lake is located on the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Kunming quasi-stationary front is over the borders of Yunnan and Guizhou where the specific precipitation is distributed. Besides 1954, 1963 and 1986 137Cs marks can be determined in sediment cores, a 137Cs mark of 1976 representing the major period of 137Cs released from China unclear test can be determined and used for an auxiliary dating mark. Meanwhile Dianchi Lake is divided into seven sections based on the water depth, basin topography, hydrological features and supplies of silt and the lakebed area of each section is calculated. The mean annual sedimentation rates for seven sections are 0.0810, 0.1352, 0.1457, 0.1333, 0.0904, 0.1267 and 0.1023 g/cm2a in 1963–2003, respectively. The gross sediment accumulation of the lake is 26.18×104 t/a in recent 17 years and 39.86×104 t/a in recent 50 years. The fast processing, seismic damage data extraction and loss evaluation from RS imagery acquired immediately after a destructive earthquake occurs, are important means for compen-sating the insufficiency of seismic damage information from ground-based investigations and provide an important basis for emergency command and rescue. The paper introduces the method of emergency seismic damage assessment using remote sensing data and its application to the great Wenchuan earthquake of magnitude 8.0 occurring in southwest Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008. 随着遥感技术的飞速发展, 遥感在地震应急救援、 灾害调查和损失评估中的作用越来越显著。 然而由于缺乏系统的遥感震害定量研究, 使得遥感的实用性常常受到质疑。 文中叙述了遥感震害定量研究的基本思路, 提出了遥感震害指数的概念与定量分析的基本模型, 并以2008年汶川8.0级地震造成的都江堰城区震害为例, 依据建筑物震害遥感解译结果和地面震害调查结果, 进行了都江堰城区部分街区的建筑物遥感震害指数和地面调查震害指数的统计分析, 并建立了两者之间的统计关系。 初步研究结果表明, 依据高分辨率航空遥感影像和卫星雷达图像建立的建筑物遥感震害指数与地面调查震害指数及房屋倒塌率存在显著的对应性。 因此, 通过遥感震害定量化研究, 将为地震震害调查、 损失评估提供有力的方法和工具。  相似文献
