Gradient and Mise-à-la-Masse IP/Resistivity surveys were conducted on a group of 19 boreholes in Eagle’s Nest, Eagle One magmatic sulfide deposit in northern Ontario, Canada. The surveys were conducted as a follow-up to the many drilled boreholes, some of which missed the target. The surveys were intended to map the distribution of the ore mineralization, outline the deposit hosted by mafic and ultramafic rocks and then guide the drilling of new boreholes. Joint Gradient and Mise-à-la-Masse data inversion produced 3D chargeability and conductivity models. The inverted 3D models in turn help delineate the outline of the mineralized zone, and determine the shape, size, strength and economic viability of the deposit. The Gradient array determined the direction of the mineralization with respect to the boreholes, and the Mise-à-la-Masse array examined the highly conductive subsurface bodies and their surroundings. The mapped ore zone shows close similarity to the 0.5 Cu% and 1.05 Ni% iso-surfaces that are produced from core assay result confirming the reliability of the results obtained in this study.  相似文献

Southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) were widespread in New Zealand waters before commercial whaling in the nineteenth century caused drastic declines in their abundance and distribution. Following the cessation of whaling, the population has been recovering and is now slowly recolonising its former range. Estimates of population demographics, including reproductive output, are essential for predicting the trajectory of this population. We gathered photo-identification data on female southern right whales during annual field trips to the Auckland Islands, the principal calving area in New Zealand waters. Forty-five calving intervals were observed between 2006 and 2013 (mean interval?=?3.31 years, 95% CI?=?3.06–3.57). Incorporating the effects of possible missed calving events produced a plausible range of mean calving intervals from 3.17 to 3.31 years. Our results suggest that the calving interval of New Zealand southern right whales is similar to that found in populations elsewhere.  相似文献

Gravitationally lensed quasars can be discovered as a by-product of galaxy redshift surveys. Lenses discovered spectroscopically in this way should require less observational effort per event than those found in dedicated lens surveys. Further, the lens galaxies should be relatively nearby, facilitating a number of detailed observations that are impossible for the more common high-redshift lenses. This is epitomized by the wide range of results that have been obtained from Q 2237+0305, which was discovered as part of the Center for Astrophysics redshift survey, and remains the only quasar lens discovered in this way. The likelihood of this survey yielding a lens is calculated to be ∼0.03, which is an order of magnitude larger than previous estimates due to two effects. First, the quasar images themselves increase the observed flux of the lens, so that lens galaxies up to a magnitude fainter than the nominal survey limit must be included in the calculation. Secondly, it is possible for lensed quasars with extremely faint deflectors to enter the survey due to the extended morphology of the multiple images. Extrapolating these results to future surveys, the 2 degree Field galaxy redshift survey should contain between 10 and 50 lenses and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey should yield between 50 and 300 lenses, depending on the cosmological model and the observing conditions.  相似文献

Impact ejecta from the Albion Formation are exposed in northern Belize. The ejecta come from the outer portion of the continuous ejecta blanket of the Chicxulub crater, which is located 360 km to the northwest. The basal unit of the Albion Formation is a 1-m-thick clay and dolomite spheroid bed composed of up to four discrete flows. The clay spheroids are altered impact glass, and the dolomite spheroids are accretionary lapilli. The upper unit is a 15-m-thick coarse diamictite bed containing altered glass, large accretionary blocks, striated, polished, and impacted cobbles, and rare shocked quartz. The abundance of accretionary clasts, evidence for atmospheric drag sorting, and the presence of multiple flows in the Albion Formation indicate that atmospheres play an important role in the formation of the outer portions of continuous ejecta blankets of large craters.  相似文献

The global monsoon (GM) is a defining feature of the annual variation of Earth’s climate system. Quantifying and understanding the present-day monsoon precipitation change are crucial for prediction of its future and reflection of its past. Here we show that regional monsoons are coordinated not only by external solar forcing but also by internal feedback processes such as El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). From one monsoon year (May to the next April) to the next, most continental monsoon regions, separated by vast areas of arid trade winds and deserts, vary in a cohesive manner driven by ENSO. The ENSO has tighter regulation on the northern hemisphere summer monsoon (NHSM) than on the southern hemisphere summer monsoon (SHSM). More notably, the GM precipitation (GMP) has intensified over the past three decades mainly due to the significant upward trend in NHSM. The intensification of the GMP originates primarily from an enhanced east–west thermal contrast in the Pacific Ocean, which is coupled with a rising pressure in the subtropical eastern Pacific and decreasing pressure over the Indo-Pacific warm pool. While this mechanism tends to amplify both the NHSM and SHSM, the stronger (weaker) warming trend in the NH (SH) creates a hemispheric thermal contrast, which favors intensification of the NHSM but weakens the SHSM. The enhanced Pacific zonal thermal contrast is largely a result of natural variability, whilst the enhanced hemispherical thermal contrast is likely due to anthropogenic forcing. We found that the enhanced global summer monsoon not only amplifies the annual cycle of tropical climate but also promotes directly a “wet-gets-wetter” trend pattern and indirectly a “dry-gets-drier” trend pattern through coupling with deserts and trade winds. The mechanisms recognized in this study suggest a way forward for understanding past and future changes of the GM in terms of its driven mechanisms.  相似文献

This is an essay about the territorial enclosure of urban neighbourhoods. It develops the argument that the shared public realms that became regarded as normal in the cities of the 20th century are inherently unstable. More particularly, they are an unstable form of co-ownership domain (condominium). In many different cultures and economies new forms of local territorial governance are emerging to make joint consumption more sustainable. Most of the essay is devoted to exploring this evolutionary argument and is theoretically oriented and illustrated with historical examples. We end with illustrations of urban enclosure from China, a country that has had to discover almost overnight new forms of organisational, institutional and spatial order.  相似文献

The absence of any wide-separation gravitational lenses in the Large Bright Quasar Survey is used to place limits on the population of cluster-sized haloes in the universe, and hence constrain a number of cosmological parameters. The results agree with previous investigations in strongly ruling out the standard cold dark matter model but they are consistent with low-density universes in which the primordial fluctuation spectrum matches both cluster abundances and cosmic microwave background measurements. These conclusions are essentially independent of the cosmological constant, which is in stark contrast to the statistics of galaxy lenses. The constraints presented here are nullified if clusters have core radii of ≳10 kpc, but are free of a number of potential systematic errors, owing to the homogeneity of the data.  相似文献

Seasonal snow is a globally important water resource that contributes substantially to upland and lowland water resources. As such, there is a need to understand the controls on the spatial and temporal variation in snow distribution. This study meets this research need by investigating the topographic controls on snow depth distribution in the upper Jollie catchment in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Furthermore, inter‐annual variation in the importance of the topographic controls is examined and linked to variation in the dominant synoptic‐scale weather patterns over a 4‐year period (2007–2010). Through the use of regression trees, the relative importance of the topographic controls on snow depth was shown to vary between the four study years. In particular, elevation explained the greatest amount of variance in 2007 and 2008 and east‐exposure explained the greatest variance in 2009 and 2010. The other wind exposure variables also had a large effect on the snow depth distribution in 2009 and 2010. Differences in the frequency and duration of synoptic weather patterns were physically consistent with the changing importance of these variables. In particular, a higher frequency of troughing events in 2009 and 2010 is thought to be associated with a reduced importance of elevation and greater influence of wind exposure on snow depth in these years. These findings demonstrate the importance of using multi‐year data sets, and of considering topographic and climatic influences, when attempting to model alpine snow distribution.
