The production of mixed magmas (streaky pumice) during flow in a volcanic conduit has been modelled in the laboratory by studying the flow of two miscible fluids of differing viscosity passing concentrically through a vertical pipe. In the experiments reported in this paper, the outermost fluid is the more viscous, as would be the case when two magmas are simultaneously tapped from a zoned chamber in which silicic magma overlies mafic magma. At a Reynolds number (Re) which is much less than that required for turbulence in isoviscous pipe flow, the interface between two liquids of different viscosity can become unstable. Growth of the instability and mixing proceed when Re, based on the properties of the inner, less viscous fluid (Re i), is greater than approximately 3 if between 10% and 90% of the flowing fluid is composed of the more viscous fluid. Outside this range of flow rate ratios, higher Re i and viscosity ratios are required to ensure mixing. When the viscosity ratio U10 the unstable flow takes the form of an asymmetric, sinusoidal wave and at higher viscosity ratios axisymmetric, bead-like waves are the dominant instability. Entrainment across the boundaries of these wavy interfaces results in the production of streaky mixtures of the two liquids. The degree of mixing increases with Re 1, U and distance downstream. Application of experimental results to magmatic situations shows that mixing will be possible in eruptions which tap layers of different viscosity from a stratified chamber. If a volcanic feeder is allowed to become lined by silicic magma before a mafic magma layer is drawn up from the chamber then a mixed pumice (or lava) sequence will ensue. Alternatively, if draw-up occurs when the feeder is still propagating away from the chamber, the slower flowing silicic magma may be overtaken by the faster flowing mafic magma. The advancing conduit will then have mafic or hybrid chilled margins enclosing a silicic interior, i.e. the usual arrangement in composite dykes and sills. Simultaneous tapping of silicic and underlying mafic magmas from a chamber can thus lead to magma mixing and to the emplacement of either mixed pumice sequences or composite intrusions, depending on the history of magma withdrawal and the dynamics of flow in the conduit.  相似文献

Hercynian regional metamorphic terrains in the Pyrenees contain evidence of very high-temperature gradients within the crust during metamorphism, with temperatures as high as 700°C attained at 10–12 km below the surface. Stable isotope studies demonstrate that the crust was simultaneously flushed by marine fluids to at least this depth. The absence of any evidence for crustal collision, and the Upper Palaeozoic stratigraphic record for the area, suggest that the tectonic setting for the metamorphism was a zone of continental rifting associated with strike-slip movement. In this zone anatexis occurred at two distinct levels: Cambro-Ordovician pelites at the base of the Palaeozoic sedimentary pile melted to produce per-aluminous magmas, while in the lower Hercynian crust, very large-scale melting generated voluminous granodioritic magmas which then invaded high-structural levels. The thermal structure of the Hercynian crust was profoundly influenced by both convective and advective heat transfer, due to movement of surface derived aqueous fluids, and intrusion of magmas.  相似文献

Specific conductance and concentrations of alkalinity, dissolved silica, nitrate, and ammonium were measured daily in the Sacramento River flow to northern San Francisco Bay during the rainfall seasons of 1983 and 1984 (high flow) and during late summer and early fall of 1984 (low flow). Flow and concentrations of chemical species varied in response to storm events during high flow, but flow was more variable than concentrations of chemical species. Runoff from agriculturally developed areas appeared to increase specific conductance and concentrations of alkalinity during high flow. During low flow, inputs of agricultural tailwaters caused variations in concentrations of alkalinity and dissolved silica. Dilution of municipal waste by river flow caused variability in concentrations of ammonium during both high flow and low flow. Distributions of alkalinity, dissolved silica, nitrate, and ammonium were measured in northern San Francisco Bay during late summer and fall of 1984. Changes in distributions of alkalinity in the estuary were caused by variations in alkalinity in the Sacramento River. Changes in distributions of dissolved silica, nitrate, and ammonium appeared to be primarily related to variations in supply by the river and removal by phytoplankton. Effects of removal by phytoplankton were large for ammonium and dissolved silica, but appeared relatively small for nitrate.  相似文献

Data from detailed sample traverses in the layered gabbro unit of the North Arm Mauntain massif, Bay of Islands ophiolite, allow meter-scale resolution of magmatic processes in spreading ridge magma chambers. One suite of 46 samples from a 195 m interval near the base of the layered gabbro unit contains cumulus plagioclase (An73.7–87.5; average modal abundance=75%), clinopyroxene (Mg#=80.3–86.0; 18%), and olivine (Fo76.6–82.1; 6%), with intergranular orthopyroxene (Mg#=78.0–83.3; 1%), and accessory Cr-Al spinel (Cr#=32.3–41.4). Ilmenite rims spinel in one sample. Whole rock Zr contents range from <6 to 15 ppm. Plots of stratigraphic height in the traverse versus petrogenetic indicators (e.g. Mg#'s of mafic phases and An in plagioclase) reveal both normal and reverse cryptic variation patterns; the patterns for all indices are generally correlated. The normal portions of the patterns formed during fractional crystallization of basalt batches. Ranges of mineral compositions in the normal trends suggest that 29–38% crystallization of each batch of basalt occurred before magmatic replenishment. The reverse cryptic trends formed by crystallization of hybrid magmas produced during periods of magma mixing. Other evidence for magma mixing is the systematic association of spinel and reversely zoned plagioclase with the reverse trends. Experiments and observations of natural assemblages indicate that 55% modal plagioclase crystallizes from basalts at the olivine+plagioclase+clinopyroxene+liquid piercing point. The average plagioclase content of this suite of leucogabbros from North Arm Mountain is too high to have formed from simple crystallization at the piercing point. Petrologic modeling indicates the leucogabbros may have formed from basalts into which a small amount (<10%) of plagioclase was resorbed during mixing; the initial compositions of these hybrid basalts lie in the plagioclase primary phase volume. Other suites of layered gabbros from North Arm Mountain are not so plagioclase-rich as the leucogabbros described above. Crystallization of basalts in the plagioclase primary phase volume and the consequent formation of plagioclaserich gabbros may occur in restricted portions of zoned magma chambers underlying oceanic spreading centers, or may occur episodically in the overall lifetimes of the magma chambers.  相似文献

Crack healing experiments were conducted at 780°, 815°, and 850° C in dry carbon dioxide over periods of 0.5 to 1320 h on small penny-shaped cracks of known geometry in Stahl calcite. As observed by previous investigators, healing initiates with the formation of tubes around the leading edge of the crack, followed by the pinching off of spherical bubbles from these tubes. Pillars and peninsular structures formed and grew at cleavage steps and other surface irregularities, greatly accelerating the healing process in some cracks. The crack tip regression distance at constant temperature follows a simple power law in time; although, with the exception of one crack at 850° C, the time exponent systematically decreases from 0.59 at 780° C to 0.15 and 0.07 at 815° and 850° C, respectively. Only the largest exponent is consistent with existing theory: the two smaller time exponents are, as yet, unexplained. Healing rates are strongly inversely dependent upon crack aperture, in qualitative agreement with theory. For example, cracks with maximum apertures of less than 60 nm (6×10?8 m) healed completely in 0.5 to 25 h at 850° C; while fatter cracks, with maximum apertures of about 700 nm, showed very little healing after up to 1320 h at the same temperature. At 780° C, the functional dependence of healing rate upon crack aperture was consistent with several aspects of the present model.  相似文献

The Fish Springs fault is a primary strand in the northern end of the Owens Valley fault zone (OVFZ). The Fish Springs fault is the northwest strand in a 3-km-wide left echelon step of the OVFZ which bounds the Poverty Hills bedrock high. The Fish Springs fault strikes approximately north-south, dips steeply to the east, and is marked by a prominent east-facing scarp. No other faults in the OVFZ have prominent east-facing scarps at the latitude of Fish Springs, which indicates that the Fish Springs fault has accommodated virtually all of the local late Quaternary vertical displacement on the OVFZ.

The Fish Springs fault exhibits normal dip slip with no measurable lateral slip. Vertical displacements of a Late Pleistocene (0.314 ± 0.036 Ma, 2σ) cinder cone and of an overlying Tahoe-age (0.065–0.195 m.y.) alluvial fan are 76±8 m and 31±3 m, respectively. The maximum vertical 3.3. m. Two nearly equal vertical displacements of the active stream channel in the Tioga-age fan total 2.2. m. Vertical displacement of a stream terrace incised into the cinder cone is 1.2 ± 0.3 m. The minute amount of incision into that terrace indicates that uplift of the terrace probably occurred during the 1872 Owens Valley earthquake.

Three displacements of 1.1 ± 0.2 m each apparently have occurred at the Tioga-age fan since the midpoint of the Tioga interval, allowing an average recurrence interval of 3500 to 9000 years. Based on the age and displacement of the cinder cone, the average late Quaternary vertical displacement rate is 0.24 ± 0.04 mm/yr (2σ). At this rate, and assuming an average vertical displacement of 1.1 ± 0.2 m per event, the average recurrence interval would be 4600 ± 1100 years (2σ). The recurrence interval for the Fish Springs fault is similar to that for a strand in the southern part of the OVFZ which also ruptured in 1872.

Right-lateral, normal oblique slip characterizes the OVFZ. The location of the Poverty Hills bedrock high at a left step in the north-northwest-striking fault zone is consistent with the style of slip of the zone. The pure normal slip on the north-striking Fish Springs fault and the alignment of local cinder cones along north-striking normal faults indicate that the late Quaternary maximum horizontal compression has been oriented north-south at the north end of the OVFZ. Data from southern Owens Valley indicate a similar stress regime there. Late Quaternary slip on the OVFZ is consistent with north-south maximum horizontal compression.  相似文献

The conditions under which two magmas can become mixed within a rising magma batch are investigated by scaling analyses and fluid-dynamical experiments. The results of scaling analyses show that the fluid behaviours in a squeezed conduit are determined mainly by the dimensionless number where 1 is the viscosity of the fluid, U is the velocity, g is the acceleration due to gravity, is the density difference between the two fluids, and R is the radius of the tube. The parameter I represents a balance between the viscous effects in the uppermost magma which prevent it from being moved off the conduit walls, and the buoyancy forces which tend to keep the interface horizontal. The experiments are carried out using fluid pairs of various density and viscosity contrasts in a squeezed vinyl tube. They show that overturning of the initial density stratification and mixing occur when I>order 10-1; the two fluids remain stratified when I 10-3. Transitional states are observed when 10-3<I<10-1. These results are nearly independent of Reynolds number and viscosity ratio in the range of and Re 1<300. Applying these results to magmas shows that silicic to intermediate magmas overlying mafic magma will be prone to mixing in a rising magma batch. This mechanism can explain some occurrences of small-volume mixed lava flows.  相似文献

Strong ground motions are estimated for the Pacific Northwest assuming that large shallow earthquakes, similar to those experienced in southern Chile, southwestern Japan, and Colombia, may also occur on the Cascadia subduction zone. Fifty-six strong motion recordings for twenty-five subduction earthquakes ofM s7.0 are used to estimate the response spectra that may result from earthquakesM w<81/4. Large variations in observed ground motion levels are noted for a given site distance and earthquake magnitude. When compared with motions that have been observed in the western United States, large subduction zone earthquakes produce relatively large ground motions at surprisingly large distances. An earthquake similar to the 22 May 1960 Chilean earthquake (M w 9.5) is the largest event that is considered to be plausible for the Cascadia subduction zone. This event has a moment which is two orders of magnitude larger than the largest earthquake for which we have strong motion records. The empirical Green's function technique is used to synthesize strong ground motions for such giant earthquakes. Observed teleseismicP-waveforms from giant earthquakes are also modeled using the empirical Green's function technique in order to constrain model parameters. The teleseismic modeling in the period range of 1.0 to 50 sec strongly suggests that fewer Green's functions should be randomly summed than is required to match the long-period moments of giant earthquakes. It appears that a large portion of the moment associated with giant earthquakes occurs at very long periods that are outside the frequency band of interest for strong ground motions. Nevertheless, the occurrence of a giant earthquake in the Pacific Northwest may produce quite strong shaking over a very large region.  相似文献

Numerical and calibrated age determinations of the late Quaternary alluvial fan deposits of the Soda Mountains piedmont in the Mojave Desert provide an opportunity to study the utility of the multiparameter relative-age (RA) method for distinguishing and mapping geomorphic surfaces on a desert piedmont. Most RA parameters could not discriminate between deposits of Holocene age, although pavements have formed over locally significant parts of surfaces as young as middle Holocene. Several parameters, including lithologic composition, particle size, soil development, and varnish cover, permit distinguishing between Holocene surfaces and late Pleistocene surfaces. Statistically significant differences in initial particle size and lithology of the deposits, inferred to be the result of complex interaction among hillslope, alluvial fan, and eolian processes and climatic change, create conditions unfavorable for use of most RA techniques. In contrast, soil-profile development and varnish cover data are successful in discrimination among deposits of Holocene and Pleistocene age. This is attributed to the development of pedogenic features and varnish that are strongly dependent on dust influx and to the relatively minor dependence of these features on differences in the depositional character of the fan.  相似文献
