Anthropogenic activities, such as construction work, dredging, and different kinds of recreation activities, can alter sediment loading in shallow coastal areas. The effect of increased load of fine sediment on the microbenthos (benthic microalgae, bacteria, and meiofauna) was studied in two experiments using undisturbed cores of a sandy sediment from a microtidal bay on the Swedish west coast. In each experiment, a total of 24 cores were incubated in an outdoor flow-through set-up. Twelve cores were treated with a 2.5-mm thick layer of autoclaved fine-grained, (silt) carbon-rich surface sediment. In the first experiment, estimates of the impact were based on measurements of chlorophylla, biomass of microalgae, bacteria, and meiofauna, and bacterial production. The main purpose of the second experiment was to study the effect on sediment oxygen profiles using microsensors. Within a week, after being covered by fine sediment, benthic microalgae (particularly diatoms) had migrated upward and the oxygen profiles were restored at the sediment surface by photosynthesis. However, the oxygen-producing layer became thinner and the algal composition changed. Bacterial biomass was restored to the same level as in the sandy sediment. Meiofauna also appeared to move upward and the meiofaunal composition was re-established. The results suggest that the microbenthic community of sandy sediment has an inherent capacity to recover after a moderate deposition of fine-particle sediment. Active upward migration of benthic diatoms appears to be a key mechanism for restoring the oxygenation of the sediment surface. The altered sediment type also implies changed species composition, and hence altered benthic trophic interactions, which may affect, for example, flatfish recruitment. 相似文献

Fisheries management benefits from the contribution of several academic disciplines, each with their own perspectives, concerns and solutions. In this essay we argue that the contribution of biology, economics, sociology and other relevant disciplines to fisheries would be improved if they originated from broader, more integrated analytical perspectives that are attuned to the empirical realities of fisheries management. Today, disciplinary boundaries narrow the perspectives of fisheries management, creating tunnel vision and standardized technical fixes to complex and diverse management problems. Having worked separately and together for a number of years in fisheries research and consultancy in many parts of the world we, as a group of biologists, economists and sociologists, feel that the time to rid ourselves from disciplinary dogmatism is long overdue. We claim that improvements in fisheries management will be realized not through the promotion of technical fixes but instead by embracing and responding to the complexity of the management problem. 相似文献

Abstract— The well‐preserved Kärdla impact crater, on Hiiumaa Island, Estonia, is a 4 km diameter structure formed in a shallow Ordovician sea ?455 Ma ago into a target composed of thin (?150 m) unconsolidated sedimentary layer above a crystalline basement composed of migmatite granites, amphibolites and gneisses. The fractured and crushed amphibolites in the crater area are strongly altered and replaced with secondary chloritic minerals. The most intensive chloritization is found in permeable breccias and heavily shattered basement around and above the central uplift. Alteration is believed to have resulted from convective flow of hydrothermal fluids through the central areas of the crater. Chloritic mineral associations suggest formation temperatures of 100–300 °C, in agreement with the most frequent quartz fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures of 150–300 °C in allochthonous breccia. The rather low salinity of fluids in Kärdla crater (<13 wt% NaCleq) suggests that the hydrothermal system was recharged either by infiltration of meteoric waters from the crater rim walls raised above sea level after the impact, or by invasion of sea water through the disturbed sedimentary cover and fractured crystalline basement. The well‐developed hydrothermal system in Kärdla crater shows that the thermal history of the shock‐heated and uplifted rocks in the central crater area, rather than cooling of impact melt or suevite sheets, controlled the distribution and intensity of the impact‐induced hydrothermal processes. 相似文献

Improving our ability to detect changes in terrestrial and aquatic systems is a grand challenge in the environmental sciences. In a world experiencing increasingly rapid rates of climate change and ecosystem transformation, our ability to understand and predict how, when, where, and why changes occur is essential for adapting and mitigating human behaviours. In this context, long-term field research infrastructures have a fundamentally important role to play. For northern boreal landscapes, the Krycklan Catchment Study (KCS) has supported monitoring and research aimed at revealing these changes since it was initiated in 1980. Early studies focused on forest regeneration and microclimatic conditions, nutrient balances and forest hydrology, which included monitoring climate variables, water balance components, and stream water chemistry. The research infrastructure has expanded over the years to encompass a 6790 ha catchment, which currently includes 11 gauged streams, ca. 1000 soil lysimeters, 150 groundwater wells, >500 permanent forest inventory plots, and a 150 m tall tower (a combined ecosystem-atmosphere station of the ICOS, Integrated Carbon Observation System) for measurements of atmospheric gas concentrations and biosphere-atmosphere exchanges of carbon, water, and energy. In addition, the KCS has also been the focus of numerous high resolution multi-spectral LiDAR measurements and large scale experiments. This large collection of equipment and data generation supports a range of disciplinary studies, but more importantly fosters multi-, trans-, and interdisciplinary research opportunities. The KCS attracts a broad collection of scientists, including biogeochemists, ecologists, foresters, geologists, hydrologists, limnologists, soil scientists, and social scientists, all of whom bring their knowledge and experience to the site. The combination of long-term monitoring, shorter-term research projects, and large-scale experiments, including manipulations of climate and various forest management practices, has contributed much to our understanding of boreal landscape functioning, while also supporting the development of models and guidelines for research, policy, and management. 相似文献

The 6-m-long British Geological Survey vibrocore 56+01/170 from the Devil's Hole area, central North Sea, comprises glaciomarine and marine sediments of Late Weichselian and Holocene age. Besides the foraminiferal, pollen and AMS 14C data presented in this study, amino acid and ostracod data exist for the core. The accumulation of the sediment in the core began ca. 15.7 14C ka BP on an erosional surface on overconsolidated Saalian sediment. When the lower part of the core (facies 1) accumulated the core area is interpreted to have been around 40 m lower than present. This interpretation is based on two assumptions; first, that the sediment is now ca. 20 m above the global sea level at the time of deposition, and second, that the marine microfaunal content reflects a water depth of about 20 m at that time. Crustal downflexure caused by Late Weichselian glacial loading of the core area is considered as the most plausible explanation of this difference. Glacial overriding would also explain the overconsolidation of the underlying Saalian sediment, the erosional surface on the Saalian sediment and the absence of Weichselian sediment older than ca. 15.7 ka BP at the core site. Indications of a regressional trend, with a minimum age of 12.1 ka BP, support the suggestion that the Devil's Hole area was glaciated during the Weichselian, as the fall in sea-level at that time probably reflects local isostatic rebound. 相似文献

Fisheries management needs to broaden its perspective to achieve sustainable resource use. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an ISO standardized method to evaluate the environmental impacts of products using a broad and systematic approach. In this study, the outcome of a management regime promoting species-selective trawling in Swedish Nephrops trawl fisheries was studied using LCA methodology by quantifying the impacts per kilogram of landing using two different fishing methods. Demersal trawling has previously been found to be both energy intensive and destructive in terms of seafloor impact and discards. It is demonstrated that species-selective trawling fulfils management objectives, although with tradeoffs in terms of fuel consumption and associated GHG emissions. To prioritize between impacts, one must be aware of and quantify these potential tradeoffs. LCA could be an important tool for defining sustainable seafood production as it can visualize a broad range of impacts and facilitate integrated, transparent decision making in the seafood industry. It is also concluded that, with current LCA methodology, use of total discarded mass could increasingly be distinguished from potential impact by applying two new concepts: primary production requirements and threatened species affected. 相似文献

Through their consumption behavior, households are responsible for 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, they are key actors in reaching the 1.5 °C goal under the Paris Agreement. However, the possible contribution and position of households in climate policies is neither well understood, nor do households receive sufficiently high priority in current climate policy strategies. This paper investigates how behavioral change can achieve a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in European high-income countries. It uses theoretical thinking and some core results from the HOPE research project, which investigated household preferences for reducing emissions in four European cities in France, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The paper makes five major points: First, car and plane mobility, meat and dairy consumption, as well as heating are the most dominant components of household footprints. Second, household living situations (demographics, size of home) greatly influence the household potential to reduce their footprint, even more than country or city location. Third, household decisions can be sequential and temporally dynamic, shifting through different phases such as childhood, adulthood, and illness. Fourth, short term voluntary efforts will not be sufficient by themselves to reach the drastic reductions needed to achieve the 1.5 °C goal; instead, households need a regulatory framework supporting their behavioral changes. Fifth, there is a mismatch between the roles and responsibilities conveyed by current climate policies and household perceptions of responsibility. Fourteen stratiform, stratabound and vein-type sulphide occurrences in the Upper Allochthon of the Central–North Norwegian Caledonides have been studied for their sulphur, oxygen and hydrogen isotope composition. Depositional ages of host rocks to the stratabound and stratiform sulphide occurrences range from 590 to 640?Ma. The sulphides and their host rocks have been affected by polyphase deformation and metamorphism with a peak temperature of 650?°C dated to 432?Ma. A total of 104 sulphide and 2 barite samples were analysed for δ34S, 16 whole-rock and quartz samples for δ18O and 12 samples of muscovite for δD. The overall δ34S values range from ?14 to +31‰ with the majority of sampled sulphides lying within a range of +4 to +15‰. In most cases δ34S within each hand specimen behaves in accordance with the equilibrium fractionation sequence, δ34Sgn<δ34Scp<δ34Ssph<δ34Spy. A systematic increase in δ34S from the vein sulphides (?8‰) through schist/amphibolite-hosted (+6‰) and schist-hosted (+7 to +12‰) to dolomite-hosted (+12 to +31‰) occurrences is documented. The δ34S averages of the stratiform schist-hosted sulphides are 17 to 22‰ lower than in the penecontemporaneous seawater sulphate. The Bjørkåsen (+4 to +6‰) occurrence is a volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) transitional to sedimentary massive sulphide (SMS), exhalative, massive, pyritic deposit of Cu–Zn–Pb sulphides formed by fluids which obtained H2S via high-temperature reduction of seawater sulphate by oxidation of Fe2+ during the convective circulation of seawater through underlying rock sequences. The Raudvatn, volcanic-hosted, disseminated Cu sulphides (+6 to +8‰) obtained sulphur via a similar process. The Balsnes, stratiform, ‘black schist’-hosted, pyrite–pyrrhotite occurrence (?6 to ?14‰) is represented by typical diagenetic sulphides precipitated via bacteriogenic reduction of coeval (ca. 600?Ma) seawater sulphate (+25 to +35‰) in a system open to sulphate supply. The δ34S values of the Djupvik–Skårnesdalen (+7 to +12‰), Hammerfjell (+5 to 11‰), Kaldådalen (+10 to +12‰) and Njallavarre (+7 to +8‰) stratiform, schist-hosted, massive and disseminated Zn–Pb (±Cu) sulphide occurrences, as well as the stratabound, quartzite-hosted, Au-bearing arsenopyrite occurrence at Langvatnet (+7 to +11‰), suggest that thermochemically reduced connate seawater sulphate was a principal sulphur source. The Sinklien and Tårstad, stratabound, dolomite- and dolomite collapse breccia-hosted, Zn (±Cu–Pb) sulphides are marked by the highest enrichment in 34S (+20 to +31‰). The occurrences ?are?assigned to the Mississippi-Valley-type deposits.?High δ34S values require reduction/replacement of contemporaneous (ca. 590?Ma) evaporitic sulphate (+23 to +34‰) with Corg-rich fluids in a closed system. The Melkedalen (+12 to +15‰), stratabound, fault-controlled, Cu–Zn sulphide deposit is hosted by the ca. 595?Ma dolomitised Melkedalen marble. The deposit is composed of several generations of ore minerals which formed by replacement of host dolomite. Polyphase hydrothermal fluids were introduced during several reactivation episodes of the fault zone. The positive δ34S values with a very limited fractionation (<3‰) are indicative of the sulphide-sulphur generated through abiological, thermochemical reduction of seawater sulphate by organic material. The vein-type Cu (±Au–W) occurrences at Baugefjell, Bugtedalen and Baugevatn (?8 to ?4‰) are of hydrothermal origin and obtained their sulphur from igneous sources with a possible incorporation of sedimentary/diagenetic sulphides. In a broad sense, all the stratiform/stratabound, sediment-hosted, sulphide occurrences studied formed by epigenetic fluids within two probable scenarios which may be applicable separately or interactively: (1) expulsion of hot metal-bearing connate waters from deeper parts of sedimentary basins prior to nappe translation (late diagenetic/catagenetic/epigenetic fluids) or (2) tectonically driven expulsion in the course of nappe translation (early metamorphic fluids). A combination of (1) and (2) is favoured for the stratabound, fault-controlled, Melkedalen and Langvatnet occurrences, whereas the rest are considered to have formed within option (1). The sulphides and their host rocks were transported from unknown distances and thrust on to the Fennoscandian Shield during the course of the Caledonian orogeny. The displaced/allochthonous nature of the Ofoten Cu–Pb–Zn ‘metallogenetic province’ would explain the enigmatically high concentration of small-scale Cu–Pb–Zn deposits that occur only in this particular area of the Norwegian Caledonides. 相似文献

Global change issues are high on the current international political agenda. A variety of global protocols and conventions have been established aimed at mitigating global environmental risks. A system for monitoring, evaluation and compliance of these international agreements is needed, with each component requiring comprehensive analytical work based on consistent datasets. Consequently, scientists and policymakers have put faith in earth observation data for improved global analysis. Land cover provides in many aspects the foundation for environmental monitoring [FAO, 2002a. Proceedings of the FAO/UNEP Expert Consultation on Strategies for Global Land Cover Mapping and Monitoring. FAO, Rome, Italy, 38 pp.]. Despite the significance of land cover as an environmental variable, our knowledge of land cover and its dynamics is poor [Foody, G.M., 2002. Status of land cover classification accuracy assessment. Rem. Sens. Environ. 80, 185–201]. This study compares four satellite derived 1 km land cover datasets freely available from the internet and in wide use among the scientific community. Our analysis shows that while these datasets have in many cases reasonable agreement at a global level in terms of total area and general spatial pattern, there is limited agreement on the spatial distribution of the individual land classes. If global datasets are used at a continental or regional level, agreement in many cases decreases significantly. Reasons for these differences are many—ranging from the classes and thresholds applied, time of data collection, sensor type, classification techniques, use of in situ data, etc., and make comparison difficult. Results of studies based on global land cover datasets are likely influenced by the dataset chosen. Scientists and policymakers should be made aware of the inherent limitations in using current global land cover datasets, and would be wise to utilise multiple datasets for comparison. 相似文献
