Part I of this contribution (Gardés et al. in Contrib Mineral Petrol, 2010) reported time- and temperature-dependent experimental growth of polycrystalline forsterite-enstatite double layers between
single crystals of periclase and quartz, and enstatite single layers between forsterite and quartz. Both double and single
layers displayed growth rates decreasing with time and pronounced grain coarsening. Here, a model is presented for the growth
of the layers that couples grain boundary diffusion and grain coarsening to interpret the drop of the growth rates. It results
that the growth of the layers is such that (Δx)2 ∝ t

, where Δx is the layer thickness and n the grain coarsening exponent, as experimentally observed. It is shown that component transport occurs mainly by grain boundary
diffusion and that the contribution of volume diffusion is negligible. Assuming a value of 1 nm for the effective grain boundary
width, the following Arrhenius laws for MgO grain boundary diffusion are derived: log D

gbFo = 329 ± 30 kJ/mol in forsterite and log D

gbEn = 417 ± 38 kJ/mol in enstatite. The different activation energies are responsible for the changes in the enstatite/forsterite
thickness ratio with varying temperature. We show that significant biases are introduced if grain boundary diffusion-controlled
rim growth is modelled assuming constant bulk diffusivities so that differences in activation energies of more than 100 kJ/mol
may arise. It is thus important to consider grain coarsening when modelling layered reaction zones because they are usually

In spite of the fundamental role the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays for global climate stability,
no direct current measurement of the Denmark Strait Overflow, which is the densest part of the AMOC, has been available until
recently that resolve the cross-stream structure at the sill for long periods. Since 1999, an array of bottom-mounted acoustic
instruments measuring current velocity and bottom-to-surface acoustic travel times was deployed at the sill. Here, the optimization
of the array configuration based on a numerical overflow model is discussed. The simulation proves that more than 80% of the
dense water transport variability is captured by two to three acoustic current profilers (ADCPs). The results are compared
with time series from ADCPs and Inverted Echo Sounders deployed from 1999 to 2003, confirming that the dense overflow plume
can be reliably measured by bottom-mounted instruments and that the overflow is largely geostrophically balanced at the sill. 相似文献

Researchers’ fame in most scientific fields is closely linked to their publishing capacity, both in terms of quantity and quality. In GIScience, as in other fields, this situation demands that the researcher evaluate and to be very familiar with the scientific journals in which they could publish. Some specialized journals (e.g. Journal of Citation Reports or JCR) are devoted to ranking these reviews according to various methods and criteria. Compared to other scientific communities, GIScience is relatively new and constantly evolving. Therefore, the journals of this field do not benefit from any real formal ranking yet. The objective of this paper is to present the process and results of a study aimed at addressing this gap. More specifically, the challenge is to elaborate an importance ranking of the scientific journals in the field of GIScience. To do so, both a qualitative (Delphi study carried out with 40 international experts) and a quantitative (JCR impact factor) approach has been implemented. This paper describes an alternative approach for generating pointing models for telescopes equipped with serial kinematics, esp. equatorial or alt-az mounts. Our model construction does not exploit any assumption for the underlying physical constraints of the mount, however, one can assign various effects to the respective components of the equations. In order to recover the pointing model parameters, classical linear least squares fitting procedures can be applied. This parameterization also lacks any kind of parametric singularity. We demonstrate the efficiency of this type of model on real measurements with meter-class telescopes where the results provide a root mean square accuracy of 1.5?2 arcseconds. 相似文献

A period of minimum solar activity in April and May 1996 was used to analyze full-disk CaK spectroheliograms with the aim of deriving the intensity thresholds of the quiet network and the plages by applying the so-called inflexion point method. The average network intensity threshold is found to be influenced mainly by the seeing, whereas the average plage threshold shows an increasing trend from disk center towards the solar limb. Massive planets form within the lifetime of protoplanetary disks, and therefore, they are subject to orbital migration due to planet–disk interactions. When the first planet reaches the inner edge of the disk, its migration stops and consequently the second planet ends up locked in resonance with the first one. We detail how the resonant trapping works comparing semi-analytical formulae and numerical simulations. We restrict to the case of two equal-mass coplanar planets trapped in first-order resonances, but the method can be easily generalized. We first describe the family of resonant stable equilibrium points (zero-amplitude libration orbits) using series expansions up to different orders in eccentricity as well as a non-expanded Hamiltonian. Then we show that during convergent migration the planets evolve along these families of equilibrium points. Eccentricity damping from the disk leads to a final equilibrium configuration that we predict precisely analytically. The fact that observed multi-exoplanetary systems are rarely seen in resonances suggests that in most cases the resonant configurations achieved by migration become unstable after the removal of the protoplanetary disk. Here we probe the stability of the resonances as a function of planetary mass. For this purpose, we fictitiously increase the masses of resonant planets, adiabatically maintaining the low-amplitude libration regime until instability occurs. We discuss two hypotheses for the instability, that of a low-order secondary resonance of the libration frequency with a fast synodic frequency of the system, and that of minimal approach distance between planets. We show that secondary resonances do not seem to impact resonant systems at low amplitude of libration. Resonant systems are more stable than non-resonant ones for a given minimal distance at close encounters, but we show that the latter nevertheless play the decisive role in the destabilization of resonant pairs. We show evidence that as the planetary mass increases and the minimal distance between planets gets smaller in terms of mutual Hill radius, the region of stability around the resonance center shrinks, until the equilibrium point itself becomes unstable. 相似文献

HR 1217 is a prototypical rapidly oscillating Ap star that has presented a test to the theory of non-radial stellar pulsation. Prior observations showed a clear pattern of five modes with alternating frequency spacings of 33.3 and 34.6 μHz, with a sixth mode at a problematic spacing of 50.0 μHz (which equals 1.5×33.3 μHz) to the high-frequency side. Asymptotic pulsation theory allowed for a frequency spacing of 34 μHz, but Hipparcos observations rule out such a spacing. Theoretical calculations of magnetoacoustic modes in Ap stars by Cunha predicted that there should be a previously undetected mode 34 μHz higher than the main group, with a smaller spacing between it and the highest one. In this Letter, we present preliminary results from a multisite photometric campaign on the rapidly oscillating Ap star HR 1217 using the 'Whole Earth Telescope'. While a complete analysis of the data will appear in a later paper, one outstanding result from this run is the discovery of a newly detected frequency in the pulsation spectrum of this star, at the frequency predicted by Cunha. 相似文献
