This technical note presents an analytical derivation of the expression for the total dynamic active thrust on a retaining wall from the c–? soil backfill considering both horizontal and vertical seismic coefficients. The derivation is based on the Coulomb sliding wedge concept, and it considers tension cracks, wall adhesion, and surcharge in order to make the expression useful for practical applications. It is found that the special cases of the general expression result in the expressions for total static and dynamic active thrusts presented by earlier researchers for different field conditions of soil backfills with and without seismic loadings. 相似文献

Hydraulic fills are one of the most common backfills used by mining industries to backfill the stopes (voids) created after
extracting the ore. It is important to estimate the stresses within to the stope to design the drainage and barricades. Most
of the existing analytical models for the estimation of stresses within the stopes consider flat rectangular elements to include
the effects of arching, although a continuous compression catenary arch of principal stresses using intersections of shear
lines is the reality in field situations. In this paper, a circular compression arch of principal stresses has therefore been
used to derive a general expression for stress within the inclined stopes. The results have been compared with the existing
analytical and numerical models for vertical stopes as well as inclined stopes. A methodology has been presented to determine
the vertical stress variation along the width of stope at different depths. The variation of stresses along the width of stope

Compound Poisson process models have been studied earlier for earthquake occurrences, with some arbitrary compounding distributions.
It is more meaningful to abstract information about the compounding distribution from the empirical observations on the earthquake
sequences. The difinition of a compound distribution can be interpreted as an integral transform of the compounding distribution.
The latter distribution can therefore be estimated by inverting the integral transform. Alternatively, from the moments of
the observable random variablesviz. (a) the number of earthquakes per unit time or (b) the waiting times for subsequent earthquakes, the moments of the compounding

It is usually accepted that a time-predictable model of earthquake occurrences is better than the so-called slip-predictable
model. Here a size-interval relation (SIR)-predictable model is proposed which combines the features of the time-predictable
and slip-predictable models. Unlike a constant, and hence nonpredictive, relation between the size of the next earthquake
and the inter-event interval, given by the so-called slip-predictable model, the SIR-predictable model prescribes such a relation
contingent upon the size of the previous earthquake. Unlike the time-predictable model, instead of predicting the time interval,
it proposes a size-interval relation. Using data about a seismogenic source called Cephalonia in Greece, the superiority of
the SIR-predictable model over the time-predictable model is illustrated. The SIR-predictable model can be made more efficient
by employing two-stage nonlinear estimation procedures motivated by the initial work by Stein. Introducing these procedures
to seismologists is an independent objective of this paper. Also, Stein estimators have a dimensionality threshold. This work

The problem of inversion of potential field data is a challenging one because of the difficulty in obtaining a unique solution.
This paper identifies various types of nonuniqueness and argues that it is neither possible nor necessary to remove all categories
of nonuniqueness. Some types of nonuniqueness are due to human limitations and choice and these would always persist.
Listing all the solutions, imposing additional constraints on the acceptable solutions, a priori idealization, use of a priori
or supplementary information, characterizing what is common to all the solutions, obtaining extremal solutions, seeking a
distribution of all possible solutions, etc. are various responses in the face of nonuniqueness. It is shown that merely the
form of nonuniqueness is changed by all these techniques. Some algorithms, which should be used to obtain the global minimum
of the objective function are discussed.
The conceptual commonality underlying seemingly different approaches and the possibility of nonunique interpretations of the
same numerical results due to different axiomatic contexts are both elucidated. 相似文献

In high-altitude areas, snow cover plays a significant role in mountainous hydrology. Satluj, which is a snow-fed river, is a part of the Indus River system in the western Himalayas. Snow cover area (SCA) variability in this river basin affects the spatio-temporal flow availability and avalanche events. Keeping this in mind, the present study focuses on SCA variability and its relationship with various topographical features such as elevation, slope and aspect. The study has been carried out in the upper part of the Satluj River Basin on the basis of MODIS Terra (MOD10A2) data from 2001 to 2014. It has been noticed that the average annual SCA in this part of the Satluj River Basin varies from 44 to 56% with an average of about 48% of the total basin area of 16, 650 km2. Further, snow accumulation and depletion curves have been suggested for assessing the SCA in the study area. 相似文献

Ice nucleating particle(INP) measurements were made at two high-altitude stations in India. Aerosols collected on filter paper at Girawali Observatory, Inter University Center for Astronomy Astrophysics(IGO), and at the Radio Astronomy Center, Ooty(RAC), were activated in deposition mode using a thermal gradient diffusion chamber to determine the INP concentrations. The measurement campaigns at IGO were conducted during 2011, 2013 and 2014, and at RAC during 2013 and 2014. When the aerosol samples were exposed to an ice supersaturation of between 5% and 23% in the temperature range~(-1)7.6?C to-22?C, the maximum INP number concentration at IGO and RAC was 1.0 L~(-1) and 1.6 L~(-1), respectively.A maximum correlation coefficient of 0.76 was observed between the INP number concentration and ice supersaturation. The airmass trajectories analyzed for the measurement campaigns showed that the Arabian Desert and arid regions were the main INP contributors. Elemental analysis of particles showed the presence of Na, Cl, Si, Al, Fe, Cu, Co, Cd, S, Mn and K, as well as some rare-Earth elements like Mo, Ru, La, Ce, V and Zr. When aerosols in the size range 0.5–20 μm were considered, the fraction that acted as INPs was 1 : 10~4 to 1 : 10~6 at IGO, and 1 : 10~3 to 1 : 10~4 at RAC. The higher ratio of INPs to aerosols at RAC than IGO may be attributable to the presence of rare-Earth elements observed in the aerosol samples at RAC, which were absent at IGO. 相似文献

In this study, we have prepared an intensity map based on macroseismic survey and all the available information from print and electronic media of damage and other effects due to March 05, 2012, M 4.9 Bahadurgarh (Haryana–Delhi border) earthquake and interpreted them to obtain modified Mercalli intensities (MMI) at over 62 locations surrounding the Haryana and Delhi. We have cross-checked the damage information from print and electronic media in the field at 25 sites within 110 km surrounding the epicenter for validation. Based on the questionnaire which is used in macroseismic survey and personal judgment, intensities were assigned accordingly as per physical survey at 25 sites and for rest based on media reporting. A maximum intensity of VI was assigned to this seismic event. Isoseismals of V and VI have been fully covered in the field observations. Beside this, some of the points have also been covered for isoseismal IV and isoseismal III and rest are based on media report only. The intensity map reveals several interesting features. Elliptically elongated shape of intensity map shows that most of the slightly damaged areas are concentrated toward the northwestern side of the epicenter having intensity V which may be due to directivity or site effects. A regression relation has also been derived between intensity and epicentral distance. The derived attenuation relation will be useful for assessing damage of a potential future earthquake (earthquake scenario–based planning purposes) for the Delhi NCR region. 相似文献

The 8 October 2005 earthquake caused widespread destruction in both the state of Jammu and Kashmir of India and Northern Pakistan. Due to poor accessibility in the hazardous and difficult mountainous terrain, a proper and comprehensive ground-based survey was not possible. However, with the help of remote sensing data and its analysis techniques, it is feasible to undertake both earthquake-related damage identification and assessment. This study attempts to document and identify built-up damaged (BD) areas using spectral indices taking temporal multispectral images from IRS-P6 LISS-IV. Five spectral indices have been used to identify BD areas using supervised possibilistic c-means (PCM) and noise cluster (NC) classifiers, to analyse the satellite data. The result indicates that Class Based Sensor Independent (CBSI) based Transformed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (TNDVI) temporal indices provide the best results for identifying BD areas, while Simple Ratio (SR) index gives the best results for built-up undamaged area identification.
