A new Bolivia-USSR astronomical observatory and its astrometric activities

In 1982 a Bolivia-USSR astronomical observatory began its activities near Tarija, Bolivia. Observations of 200 000 faint stars, 2822 bright stars (m6) and Halley's comet have been made with the expedition's astrograph.     

Outward transport of angular momentum by gas convection and the equatorial acceleration of the Sun

A new mechanism for sustaining enhanced rotational velocity of the outer layers of the solar convective envelope is considered.The gas density inside turbulent eddies decreases because of centrifugal scattering of matter. The decrease of density in eddies rotating in the same sense as the Sun on the whole is larger than that in eddies rotating in the opposite sense. As a result, the former ascend while the latter sink down, thus producing a continuous outward flux of angular momentum.A distribution of angular velocity in the radius of the solar convective envelope in the equatorial plane was obtained in the approximation of the mixing length theory of thermal convection. The results agree rather well with observations.     

A light subsystem inside a gravitating triaxial ellipsoid

We obtain the possible ellipsoidal and hyperboloidal equilibrium figures of the light subsystem with internal fluxes of matter of constant vorticity inside a gravitating homogeneous triaxial ellipsoid. We obtain the domains of stability of these equilibrium figures with respect to second-form oscillations.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 38, No. 2, 1995.     

The intensity distribution of the D3 helium line near the solar limb

Cinematographic observations of the slitless flash spectrum near the D₃ helium line were performed in Yurgamysh at the total solar eclipse of September 22, 1968. The intensity distribution of the D₃ line was obtained with a height resolution of 44 km within the height interval between –3400 and +1700 km above the limb. The absorption line D₃ on the disk near the limb was discovered.     

A crustal suture and lineament in North Africa

A possible suture between an old craton in West Africa and the Arabian—Nubian shield is marked by a persistent zone of Phanerozoic weakness. This zone extends between the Nile and Niger deltas and passes through the Qattara embayment, along the Bahariya fault, through the Kufra basin, between the Tibesti and Jabal al Uwaynat massifs, through the Bahr el Ghazal and Lake Chad areas, and along the Benoue trough.     

A numerical technique for delineation of soil mapping units using multi-spectral remote sensing data

A numerical technique for transformation of ground based sail spectral information into soil mapping — unit information, in terms of the total information content index has been proposed. The study carried out on 14 surface soil samples. widely differing in their physical appearance of colour and collected from different parts of India, revealed that total information content index could distinctly discriminate between the contrasting soil physiographic units with black cotton, red and sandy soil types. A comparison of the proposed index with the conventionally used two or three waveband specific indices (e.g. NIR/Red and NIR-Red/Red-Green) showed that the proposed index was more characteristic of the various soil types studied. Further, unlike the conventional 2-D indices, the proposed, numerical technique lead to the complete compression of the information contained in the entire reflectance spectrum (irrespective of the number of wavebands) to a single characteristic value in 1-D Space and a simplified 1-D clustering analysis.
