Barforms of mesotidal to macrotidal fluvial–tidal transitions, regardless of fluvial-discharge, are currently thought to display a sedimentary architecture dominated by tidal signatures. Due to the scarcity of observations from modern mesotidal fluvial–tidal transitions, especially those of multi-channelled large-rivers (mean annual discharge ≥7000 m3 s−1 and peak discharges ≥15 000 m3 s−1) with mid-channel bars, this concept remains unproven. The present study analyses data produced by a combination of high-resolution ground penetrating radar and coupled shallow vibracores (<5 m depth), collected from modern fluvial–tidal mid-channel bars of the mesotidal multi-channelled Lower Columbia River, Washington/Oregon, USA, which can experience peak discharges ≥18 000 m3 s−1. These data were used alongside time-sequenced aerial imagery to characterize the spatio-temporal sedimentological evolution of these barforms in singular flows or combined flows consisting of river, tidal and/or wind-wave oscillatory, current components operating in unique fluvial–tidal transition regimes. Results indicate that ca 75% of the Lower Columbia River fluvial–tidal transition produces braid-bars with basal to bar-top sedimentological architectures that are indistinguishable from fluvial-only braid-bars recorded in the literature. Barform stratal characteristics within the fluvial–tidal transitions of mesotidal large-rivers are therefore more likely to be dominated by downstream-oriented currents. Furthermore, a new style of low-angle (<5°) inclined heterolithic stratification found in bar-top accretion-sets within upper-mixed tidal–fluvial regime braid-bars is observed. This common stratification is created by combined-flows characterized by intrabasinal wind-wave oscillatory-currents and bidirectional tidal-currents. This inclined heterolithic stratification marks the initial downstream fluvial–tidal crossover point from Lower Columbia River up-dip fully-fluvial braid-bar architectures, to those possessing bar-top facies produced by the hydraulic-sedimentation response of combined intrabasinal wind-wave and tidal influence. When preserved, this form of mid-channel bar inclined heterolithic stratification provides a unique sedimentological signature of multi-channelled fluvial–tidal transitions that possess an open-water lower basin with intrabasinal wind-waves. 相似文献

苏拉威西海具有独特的演化过程—位于北婆罗洲及苏禄岛弧下的苏拉威西海板块停止俯冲后,其俯冲板块的另一侧开始向苏拉威西岛俯冲,形成了诸如俯冲转换边缘、对向俯冲系统等独特的地质现象。针对这种同一板块一侧俯冲停止后在板块另一侧发育新俯冲的过程,科学界提出了众多的板块初始俯冲机制模式,如前陆盆地碰撞后发育新俯冲、大陆/岛弧边缘重力失稳后解耦后俯冲、岩石圈浅部小范围的地幔对流活动导致俯冲等14种初始模式。由于难以获得处于俯冲初始阶段俯冲带的深部岩石圈的地震观测资料,造成这些板块活动模式仍止步于推测。苏拉威西海区的天然地震观测资料不仅是研究苏拉威西海俯冲系统岩石圈深部构造及演化的基础,而且也是认识俯冲过程初始机制的关键一环。本文重点介绍了国家自然科学基金委员会重大研究计划“西太平洋地球系统多圈层相互作用”所属重点项目“苏拉威西海与古南海对向俯冲系统的三维地震观测与板块活动机制”在苏拉威西海区针对北苏拉威西海俯冲板片结构所开展的三维地震观测研究。该项研究实验以揭示俯冲系统深部结构与板块活动机制为目标,通过多边国际合作,于2019年8月15—25日在苏拉威西海区成功投放了27台国产宽频带海底地震仪(BBOBS),拟采集10个月的天然地震数据。同时计划利用印尼合作方的陆区地震台站数据,与OBS数据一同开展研究区岩石圈三维结构的地震学研究与数值模拟,认识俯冲下插板片的变形形态与特征、上覆地壳增厚程度及与俯冲系统持续作用过程之间的关系,讨论该地区独特俯冲系统的初始机制。 相似文献

Three and a half years of hydrographic, velocity, and meteorological observations are used to examine the dynamics of upper Elkhorn Slough, a seasonally inverse, shallow, mesotidal estuary in central California. The long-term observations revealed that residual circulation in Elkhorn Slough is seasonally variable, with classic estuarine circulation in the winter and inverse estuarine circulation in the summer. The strength of this exchange flow varied both within years and between years, driven by the annual cycle of dry summers and wet winters. Subtidal circulation is a combination of both tidal and density-driven mechanisms. The subtidal magnitude and reversal of the exchange flows is controlled primarily by the density gradient despite the significant tidal energy. As the density gradient weakens, the underlying tidal processes generate vertically sheared exchange flows with the same sign as that expected for an inverse density gradient. The inverse density gradient may then further strengthen this inverse circulation. These data were collected as part of the Land/Ocean Biogeochemical Observatory and demonstrate the utility of long-term in situ measurements in a coastal system, as consideration of such a wide range of forcing conditions would not have been possible with a less comprehensive data set. 相似文献

Nd whole-rock data from the Windmill Islands area yield early Proterozoic to middle Archaean Nd model ages. These crustal residence times are consistent with regional correlations with other parts of Antarctica (Bunger Hills, Denman Glacier area) and the Albany-Fraser Orogen of south-western Australia during the Mid-Proterozoic and thus support reconstructions with a continuous Mid-Proterozoic orogen in these areas. The new Nd isotope data provide strong evidence that no age boundary exists between the higher- and lower-grade parts of the Windmill Islands area, and that the metamorphic complex represents a single terrane with a common crustal history. The data support the notion of a time-link between the occurrence of intrusive charnockites (C-type magmas) and high-grade metamorphism. The magmatic rocks and orthogneisses in the area are interpreted to have a mixed source consisting of older crustal components, i.e. older sediments (ca. 3.2-2.6 Ga) and a younger mafic component (ca. 1.9 Ga). Two garnet Sm-Nd isochrons yield ages of 1156ᆥ Ma and 1137DŽ.5 Ma and are identical to SHRIMP U-Pb results on monazite from these samples. A garnet Sm-Nd age of 1123ᆡ Ma for the Ford granite is significantly younger than the SHRIMP U-Pb zircon age for this sample. The difference relates to the different closure temperature of each isotopic system and is thus interpreted as initial cooling after granulite facies metamorphism. 相似文献

Evidence from lake sediments and glacier forefields from two hydrologically isolated lake basins is used to reconstruct Holocene
glacier and climate history at Hallet and Greyling Lakes in the central Chugach Mountains of south-central Alaska. Glacial
landform mapping, lichenometry, and equilibrium-line altitude reconstructions, along with changes in sedimentary biogenic-silica
content, bulk density, and grain-size distribution indicate a dynamic history of Holocene climate variability. The evidence
suggests a warm early Holocene from 10 to 6 ka, followed by the onset of Neoglaciation in the two drainage basins, beginning
between 4.5 and 4.0 ka. During the past 2 ka, the glacial landforms and lacustrine sediments from the two valleys record a
remarkably similar history of glaciation, with two primary advances, one during the first millennium AD, from ~500 to 800 AD,
and the second during the Little Ice Age (LIA) from ~1400 to 1900 AD. During the LIA, the reconstructed equilibrium-line altitude
in the region was no more than 83 ± 44 m (n = 21) lower than the modern, which is based on the extent of glaciers during 1978. Differences between the summer temperature
inferred from the biogenic-silica content and the evidence for glacial advances and retreats suggest a period of increased
winter precipitation from 1300 to 1500 AD, and reduced winter precipitation from 1800 to 1900 AD, likely associated with variability
in the strength of the Aleutian Low.

Probabilistic water balance modelling provides a useful framework for investigating the interactions between soil, vegetation, and the atmosphere. It has been used to estimate temporal soil moisture dynamics and ecohydrological responses at a point. This study combines a nonlinear rainfall–runoff theory with probabilistic water balance model to represent varied source area runoff as a function of rainfall depth and a runoff coefficient at hillslope scale. Analytical solutions of the soil‐moisture probability density function and average water balance model are then developed. Based on a sensitivity analysis of soil moisture dynamics, we show that when varied source area runoff is incorporated, mean soil moisture is always lower and total runoff higher, compared with the original probabilistic water balance model. The increased runoff from the inclusion of varied source area runoff is mainly because of a reduction in leakage when the index of dryness is less than one and evapotranspiration when the index of dryness is greater than one. Inclusion of varied source area runoff in the model means that the actual evapotranspiration is limited by less available water (i.e. water limit), which is stricter than Budyko’s and Milly’s water limit. Application of the model to a catchment located in Western Australia showed that the method can predict annual value of actual evapotranspiration and streamflow accurately. The potential for western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, to negatively affect populations of black mudfish in New Zealand wetlands was investigated with annual fishing surveys of the Whangamarino wetland and by laboratory experiments evaluating competition and predation of mosquitofish on mudfish adults and larvae. Abundance of mudfish juveniles was reduced in the presence of mosquitofish at marginal wetland sites close to permanent water, but mosquitofish were not found at ephemeral adult mudfish habitats. In constructed wetland microcosms, mosquitofish reduced both growth and condition of post‐larval mudfish but did not attack or kill mudfish. In laboratory aquaria, mosquitofish rapidly consumed mudfish fry but survival time of the latter was significantly extended by an increase in density of submerged structures and by the presence of an alternative food source for mosquitofish. Because mosquitofish cannot survive in ephemeral wetlands that dry over summer, the impacts of mosquitofish on mudfish are likely to be minimal except in habitats where mosquitofish can survive year‐round owing to the presence of permanent standing water. 相似文献

Interferometers from the ground and space will be able to resolve the two images in a microlensing event. This will at least partially lift the inherent degeneracy between physical parameters in microlensing events. To increase the signal-to-noise ratio, intrinsically bright events with large magnifications will be preferentially selected as targets. These events may be influenced by finite source size effects both photometrically and astrometrically. Using observed finite source size events as examples, we show that the fringe visibility can be affected by ∼5–10 per cent, and the closure phase by a few degrees – readily detectable by ground and space interferometers. Such detections will offer unique information about the lens–source trajectory relative to the baseline of the interferometers. Combined with photometric finite source size effects, interferometry offers a way to measure the angular sizes of the source and the Einstein radius accurately. Limb-darkening changes the visibility by a small amount compared with a source with uniform surface brightness, marginally detectable with ground-based instruments. We discuss the implications of our results for the plans to make interferometric observations of future microlensing events. 相似文献

An ellipsoid is defined by, and may be re-constructed from, any three sections through it. In the field, calculation of the strain ellipsoid from general sections (two-dimensional strain ellipses determined from measured strain markers) is complicated by the fact that, due to experimental error and/or strain inhomogeneity, the three ellipses may not come from the same ellipsoid. The ellipses must first be adjusted to make them compatible. A method is suggested by which an adjustment ellipse is determined analytically for each of the three sections. Application of these adjustment ellipses makes the three sections compatible, and the strain ellipsoid may be determined. The principal axes of the ellipsoid are derived from the ellipsoid matrix by eigenvector analysis. Examples are given of practical applications of this method. 相似文献
