The CCW method (see Chester, 1854; Chisnell, 1955; Whitham, 1958) has been used to investigate the propagation of diverging shock waves through an ideal gas under its own gravitation having an initial density distribution 0 = exp(–r , where is the density at the plane/axis/origin, respectively, for plane, cylindrical, and spherical symmetry of the shock and, is non-dimensional constant, for the two situations: viz., (i) when the shock is weak and (ii) when it is strong, simultaneously. Analytical relations for shock velocity and shock strength have been obtained. Expressions for the pressure, the density and the particle velocity immediately behind the shock have been derived. Their numberical estimates for plane and cylindrical symmetry of the shock, have been computed.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to estimate the east-west component (Ew) of the magnetospheric equatorial electric field near L = 1.12 during a magnetic storm period from the whistlers observed at our low latitude ground station, Nainital (geomag.lat. 19°1'N), on March 25, 1971 in the 0130–0500 IST sector. The method of measuring Ew from the observed cross L-motions of whistler ducts within the plasmasphere, indicated by changes in nose frequency of whistlers, has been outlined. The nose frequencies of non-nose whistlers under consideration have been deduced from Dowden-Allcock linear Q-technique. The variation of (?n)23 with local time has been shown, the slope of which can be directly related to the convection electric field. The estimated equatorial electric field at L? 1.12 is in the range 0.1–0.5 mV m?1 (in the 0130–0500 IST sector) during a storm period, which is in agreement with the results reported by earlier workers. The departure from a dipole field and the contribution of an induced electric field from the temporal changes have been discussed. The importance of an electric field study has been indicated.  相似文献

The afterglow of GRB 050401 presents several novel and interesting features. (i) An initially faster decay in optical band than in X-rays. (ii) A break in the X-ray light curve after ∼0.06 d with an unusual slope after the break. (iii)The X-ray afterglow does not show any spectral evolution across the break while the R -band light curve does not show any break. We have modelled the observed multiband evolution of the afterglow of GRB 050401 as originating in a two-component jet, and interpreting the break in X-ray light curve as due to lateral expansion of a narrow collimated outflow which dominates the X-ray emission. The optical emission is attributed to a wider jet component. Our model reproduces all the observed features of multiband afterglow of GRB 050401. We present optical observations of GRB 050401 using the 104-cm Sampurnanand Telescope at the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital. Results of the analysis of multiband data are presented and compared with GRB 030329, the first reported case of double jet.  相似文献

The production rate of H2O molecules at a heliocentric distance of 1 AU for comet Halley and the abundance ratio with respect to water (H2O) of parent molecules at the cometary nucleus from the paper of Yamamoto (1987) have been used to compute the number densities of positive ions viz. H3O+, H3S+, H2CN+, H3CO+, CH3OH 2 + and NH 4 + at various cometocentric distances within 600 kms from the nucleus.The role of proton transfer reactions in producing major ionic species is discussed. A major finding of the present investigation is that NH 4 + ion which may be produced through proton transfer reactions is the most abundant ion near the nucleus of a comet unless the abundance of NH3 as a parent is abnormally low. Using the quoted value of Q(NH3)/Q(H2O) for comet Halley and the life times of NH3 and H2O molecules, the abundance ratio N(NH3)/N(H2O) is found to be one-third of that used in the present paper. The consequent proportionate decrease in the NH 4 + ions does not, however, affect its superiority in number density over other ions near the nucleus.The number density of the next most abundant ion viz. H3O+ is found to be 4 × 104 cm-3 at the nucleus of comet Halley and decreases by a factor of two only upto a distance of 600 K ms from the nucleus. The ionic mass peak recorded by VEGA and GIOTTO spacecrafts atm/q = 18 is most probably composite of the minor ionic species H2O+, as its number density = 102 cm-3 remains virtually constant in the inner coma and of NH 4 + , the number density of which at large cometocentric distances may add to the recorded peak atmlq = 18. The number densities of other major ions produced through proton transfer from H3O+ are also discussed in the region within 600 K ms from the nucleus of comet Halley.  相似文献

With the high sensitivity and wide-field coverage of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), large samples of explosive transients are expected to be discovered. Radio wavelengths, especially in commensal survey mode, are particularly well-suited for uncovering the complex transient phenomena. This is because observations at radio wavelengths may suffer less obscuration than in other bands (e.g. optical/IR or X-rays) due to dust absorption. At the same time, multiwaveband information often provides critical source classification rapidly than possible with only radio band data. Therefore, multiwaveband observational efforts with wide fields of view will be the key to progress of transients astronomy from the middle 2020s offering unprecedented deep images and high spatial and spectral resolutions. Radio observations of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) with SKA will uncover not only much fainter bursts and verifying claims of sensitivity-limited population versus intrinsically dim GRBs, they will also unravel the enigmatic population of orphan afterglows. The supernova rate problem caused by dust extinction in optical bands is expected to be lifted in the SKA era. In addition, the debate of single degenerate scenario versus double degenerate scenario will be put to rest for the progenitors of thermonuclear supernovae, since highly sensitive measurements will lead to very accurate mass loss estimation in these supernovae. One also expects to detect gravitationally lensed supernovae in far away Universe in the SKA bands. Radio counterparts of the gravitational waves are likely to become a reality once SKA comes online. In addition, SKA is likely to discover various new kinds of transients.  相似文献

We study the (2+1) dimensional BTZ (Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli) rotating Black Hole. Along with the scalar field it obeys the Klein-Gordon equation of motion. We use the dragging coordinate system to isolate the rt sector from the metric. Chandra observations of 17 nearby galaxies were analyzed and 166 bright sources with X-ray counts 〉 100 were chosen for temporal analysis. Fractional root mean square (rms) variability amplitudes were estimated for light curves, binned at 4 kilosecond (ks), with length 〈 40 ks. While there are nine ultra-luminous X- ray sources (ULXs) with unabsorbed luminosity (in the 0.3-8.0 keV band) L 〉 1039 erg s-1 in the sample for which the fractional rms variability is constrained to be 〈 10%, only two of them show variability. One of the variable ULXs exhibits a secular transition and has an ultra-soft spectrum with temperature - 0.3 keV while the other is a rapidly varying source in NGC 0628, which has previously been com- pared to the Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105. These results seem to indicate that ULXs are typically not highly variable on ks timescales, except for some ultra-soft ones. Among the relatively low luminosity sources (L - 10^38 erg s-1), we find five of them to be variable. Apart from an earlier known source in NGC 1569, we identify a source in NGC 2403 that exhibits persistent high amplitude fluctuations. In general, the variability of the sources does not seem to be correlated with hardness, which indicates that they may not be due to variations in any absorbing material, but instead could reflect instabilities in the inner accretion disk.  相似文献

Remotely sensed data has unique advantage aver conventional data collection techniques in the study of geomorphology, as physiographical and geo-structural parameters are mostly discernible on the imagery. In the present study an attempt has been made to identify and evaluate the process of geomorphological evolution and hydrogeological conditions, temporal changes in pattern of geomorphic elements and overall impact on environment in alluvial fan region in Nainital District using multidate satellite data from Landsat (1975, 1986) and IRS (1993), through visual interpretation technique. The landuse changes are quite prominent in alluvial fan of upper and lower zone. As a consequence of deforestation, an area of 16 sq. km. of natural forest cover has been lost over a span of 18 years (1975–1993) leading to the increase in rate of erosion as well as environmental degradation in upstream areas. The study suggests that the ground water utilization in Tarai belt without replenishment of confined aquifers and installation of more tubewells in Bhabar belt may lead to total failure of flowing wells and subsequently disturb the balanced ecosystem.  相似文献

Convolution of a minimum‐phase wavelet with an all‐pass wavelet provides a means of varying the phase of the minimum‐phase wavelet without affecting its amplitude spectrum. This observation leads to a parametrization of a mixed‐phase wavelet being obtained in terms of a minimum‐phase wavelet and an all‐pass operator. The Wiener–Levinson algorithm allows the minimum‐phase wavelet to be estimated from the data. It is known that the fourth‐order cumulant preserves the phase information of the wavelet, provided that the underlying reflectivity sequence is a non‐Gaussian, independent and identically distributed process. This property is used to estimate the all‐pass operator from the data that have been whitened by the deconvolution of the estimated minimum‐phase wavelet. Wavelet estimation based on a cumulant‐matching technique is dependent on the bandwidth‐to‐central‐frequency ratio of the data. For the cumulants to be sensitive to the phase signatures, it is imperative that the ratio of bandwidth to central frequency is at least greater than one, and preferably close to two. Pre‐whitening of the data with the estimated minimum‐phase wavelet helps to increase the bandwidth, resulting in a more favourable bandwidth‐to‐central‐frequency ratio. The proposed technique makes use of this property to estimate the all‐pass wavelet from the prewhitened data. The paper also compares the results obtained from both prewhitened and non‐whitened data. The results show that the use of prewhitened data leads to a significant improvement in the estimation of the mixed‐phase wavelet when the data are severely band‐limited. The proposed algorithm was further tested on real data, followed by a test involving the introduction of a 90°‐phase‐rotated wavelet and then recovery of the wavelet. In situ measurements of electron density were made over Trivandrum (8.5°N, 76.9°E) during nighttime to study E-region plasma density irregularities. Irregularities, with vertical scale sizes from a few km to 15 cm, were detected during rocket ascent and descent. Electron density profiles during ascent and descent of an earlier nighttime rocket flight from Trivandrum are also presented. Some of the important results are as follows: (i) horizontal gradients in electron density exist in 110–120 km region with horizontal scale size of at least 40 km, (ii) based on the presence/absence of electron density structures during ascent and descent of both flights, the horizontal distance over which the gradient drift instability operates is found to be at least 80 km and 90 km, for both the flights, (iii) observed irregularities in regions of negative density gradient are suggested to be produced through the gradient drift instability (GDI) driven by vertical polarization electric field as well as by electric field produced through wind shears and those in positive gradient regions by wind driven GDI, (iv) largest irregularity amplitude (≈30%) was associated with steepest gradients and so was the presence of smallest vertical scale sizes (12 m to 15 cm), which were absent at other altitudes, (v) the spectral index of irregularities was in the range of ?2.2±0.2 for large scales (few kilometers>λ>50 m), ?3.25±0.25 for medium scales (50 m>λ>10 m) and ?2.6±0.1 for smaller scales (10 m>λ>1 m) and (vi) irregularities in large and medium scales are expected to be produced directly through GDI and the small and sum-meter scales through non-linear GDI.  相似文献
