The ecosystem dynamics in the vadose zone, the unsaturated layer between the surface and the groundwater table, was studied in five caves located in northwestern Romania. Hypogean and epigean copepod assemblages collected in drip water and in the associated pools were analyzed over a period of 12 and 7 months, respectively. The temporal variation of fauna in both habitats was related to a series of environmental parameters (pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, forest cover, precipitation, type of limestone, hydrographic basin, substrate and volume of the pools). Canonical Correspondence Analysis was used to explore the relationships. Over the year, total abundances in pools were much lower than the abundances observed in drips and showed steep raising values in December only. It is shown that forest cover might be one of the most important driving factor influencing the copepod diversity and abundance. Occurrence of epigean species underground was influenced by precipitation and drip rates. The occurrence of hypogean species was related to electrical conductivity, as an indicator of residence time of water in the vadose zone. Pools on limestone harbored a more diverse and abundant fauna than those with clay sediments. Pools with calcite precipitation were preferred by hypogean species. 相似文献

The structure of macroporous or aggregated soils and fractured rocks is generally so complex that it is impractical to measure the geometry at the microscale (i.e., the size and the shape of soil aggregates or rock matrix blocks, and the myriad of fissures or fractures), and use such data in geometry-dependent macroscale flow and transport models. This paper analyzes a first-order type dual-porosity model which contains a geometry-dependent coefficient, β, in the mass transfer term to macroscopically represent the size and shape of soil or rock matrix blocks. As a reference, one- and two-dimensional geometry-based diffusion models were used to simulate mass transport into and out of porous blocks of defined shapes. Estimates for β were obtained analytically for four different matrix block geometries. Values for β were also calculated by directly matching analytical solutions of the diffusion models for a number of selected matrix block geometries to results obtained with the first-order model assuming standard boundary conditions. Direct matching improved previous results for cylindrical macropore geometries, especially when relatively small ratios between the outer soil mantle and the radius of the inner cylinder were used. Results of our analysis show that β is closely related to the ratio of the effective surface area available for mass transfer, and the soil matrix volume normalized by the effective characteristic length of the matrix system. Using values of β obtained by direct matching, an empirical function is derived to estimate macroscopic geometry coefficients from medium properties which in principle are measurable. The method permits independent estimates of β, thus allowing the dual-porosity approach eventually to be applied to media with complex and mixed types of structural geometry. 相似文献

The Sauwald area is located at the southern rim of the Bohemian Massif and contains migmatites and high-grade metapelitic and granitic gneisses. These rocks were metamorphosed during the post-collisional high-T/low-P stage of the Variscan metamorphic event (~330 Ma). Metapelitic samples were taken from two localities near Kössldorf and Pyret in Upper Austria and the investigated samples contain the mineral assemblage garnet + cordierite + spinel + sillimanite + K-feldspar + quartz + biotite + muscovite + magnetite + graphite. An important aspect of this study is the evaluation of previously published P-T estimates for these high-grade metapelites (Knop et al. 1995; Tropper et al. 2006) involving Ti-in-biotite, Na-in-cordierite thermometry and the micro-Raman thermometer based upon the degree of crystallization of carbonaceous material. In the two samples studied three texturally and chemically different biotites are distinguished. Biotite inclusions in garnet have the highest Ti contents of 5–6 wt.% TiO2. Matrix biotites contain 2–4 wt.% TiO2 and biotites from late-stage muscovite-biotite symplectites contain <2 wt.% TiO2. This corresponds to temperatures of 730–760°C (stage 1), 600–700°C (stage 2), and 550–610°C (stage 3). Since the Ti-in-biotite thermometer strongly depends on X Mg of biotite, which is susceptible to changes during retrogression the calculated temperatures for stage 1 are interpreted as minimum temperatures of the peak metamorphic stage. The Na contents of the studied cordierites vary from 0.1 to 0.2 wt.% Na2O. Application of the Na-in-cordierite thermometer yields temperatures in the range of 770–900°C; they are strongly dependent on the bulk Na2O content of the samples. The micro-Raman geothermometer of graphite was applied to carbonaceous material, which occurs as inclusions in garnet and cordierite. It yielded a maximum temperature >650°C, i.e. above the calibration limit of this method. This study shows that the obtained temperature estimates agree well with the P-T estimates based on phase equilibrium thermobarometry (Knop et al. 1995; Tropper et al. 2006), thus illustrating the validity of these thermometers. Nevertheless in order to more precisely constrain the metamorphic evolution of these high-grade rocks, better constrained experimental calibrations of, for instance the Na-in-cordierite thermometer, are clearly needed. 相似文献

Even today the remediation of organic contaminant source zones poses significant technical and economic challenges. Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) injections have proved to be a promising approach especially for source zone treatment. We present the development and the characterization of a new kind of NZVI with several advantages on the basis of laboratory experiments, model simulations and a field test. The developed NZVI particles are manufactured by milling, consist of 85 % Fe(0) and exhibit a flake-like shape with a thickness of <100 nm. The mass normalized perchloroethylene (PCE) dechlorination rate constant was 4.1 × 10?3 L/g h compared to 4.0 × 10?4 L/g h for a commercially available reference product. A transport distance of at least 190 cm in quartz sand with a grain size of 0.2–0.8 mm and Fe(0) concentrations between 6 and 160 g/kg (sand) were achieved without significant indications of clogging. The particles showed only a low acute toxicity and had no longterm inhibitory effects on dechlorinating microorganisms. During a field test 280 kg of the iron flakes was injected to a depth of 10–12 m into quaternary sand layers with hydraulic conductivities ranging between 10?4 and 10?5 m/s. Fe(0) concentrations of 1 g/kg (sand) or more [up to 100 g/kg (sand)] were achieved in 80 % of the targeted area. The iron flakes have so far remained reactive for more than 1 year and caused a PCE concentration decrease from 20.000–30.000 to 100–200 µg/L. Integration of particle transport processes into the OpenGeoSys model code proved suitable for site-specific 3D prediction and optimization of iron flake injections. 相似文献

In June 2013, excessive rainfall associated with an intense weather system triggered severe flooding in southern Alberta, which became the costliest natural disaster in Canadian history. This article provides an overview of the climatological aspects and large‐scale hydrometeorological features associated with the flooding event based upon information from a variety of sources, including satellite data, upper air soundings, surface observations and operational model analyses. The results show that multiple factors combined to create this unusually severe event. The event was characterized by a slow‐moving upper level low pressure system west of Alberta, blocked by an upper level ridge, while an associated well‐organized surface low pressure system kept southern Alberta, especially the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, in continuous precipitation for up to two days. Results from air parcel trajectory analysis show that a significant amount of the moisture originated from the central Great Plains, transported into Alberta by a southeasterly low level jet. The event was first dominated by significant thunderstorm activity, and then evolved into continuous precipitation supported by the synoptic‐scale low pressure system. Both the thunderstorm activity and upslope winds associated with the low pressure system produced large rainfall amounts. A comparison with previous similar events occurring in the same region suggests that the synoptic‐scale features associated with the 2013 rainfall event were not particularly intense; however, its storm environment was the most convectively unstable. The system also exhibited a relatively high freezing level, which resulted in rain, rather than snow, mainly falling over the still snow‐covered mountainous areas. Melting associated with this rain‐on‐snow scenario likely contributed to downstream flooding. Furthermore, above‐normal snowfall in the preceding spring helped to maintain snow in the high‐elevation areas, which facilitated the rain‐on‐snow event. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Multiple Quaternary erosion and infill cycles in overdeepened basins of the northern Alpine foreland

The cumulative effect of repeated extensive glaciations represents a poorly constrained component in the understanding of landscape evolution in mid-latitude mountain ranges such as the Alps. Timing, extent, and paleo-climatic conditions of these glaciations are generally poorly understood due to the often-fragmentary character of terrestrial Quaternary records. In this context, the sedimentary infills of subglacial basins may serve as important archives to complement the Quaternary stratigraphy over several glacial–interglacial cycles. In this study, sedimentary facies, valley-fill architecture, and luminescence dating are used to describe nine erosional and depositional cycles (Formations A–I) in the Lower Glatt valley, northern Switzerland. These cycles can be related to the ‘Birrfeld’ Glaciation (~ MIS2), the ‘Beringen’ Glaciation (~ MIS6), and up to three earlier Middle Pleistocene glaciations that can be tentatively correlated to the regional glaciation history. Evidence suggests that deep bedrock trough incision and/or partial re-excavation last occurred mainly during the ‘Beringen’ and ‘Habsburg’ Glaciations. Second-order, ‘inlaid’ glacial basins document separate glacier re-advances during the Beringen Glaciation. The arrangement of subglacial basins in the Glatt valley with different sub-parallel or bifurcating bedrock troughs, re-excavated segments, and inlaid basins document changes in the magnitude and the spatial focus of subglacial erosion over time. The Glatt valley may thus serve as a key example for the glacial landscape evolution in many other repeatedly glaciated forelands. 相似文献

Summary On the initiative of ProfessorR. Roelofs of the Delft Technological University and the financial support of the ‘Delft's Hogeschoolfonds’, a study was undertaken
by the author concerning the reception and the use of radio time signals for the precise determination of the chronometer
correction. As a result of this study an entirely new method featuring visual presentation and electronic enlargement of second
ticks as transmitted by radio station WWV, was developed. Owing to the international importance of the problem, further development
and actual construction of the necessary electronic equipment were carried out under the auspices of the Netherlands National
Geodetic Committee, resulting in the Time Signal Oscillograph (TSO), which has now been in experimental use at the Geodetic
Institute of the Delft Technological University since August 1953.
The accuracy achieved by the new method is of the order of 1/1000 second, while errors and uncertainties due to atmospheric
and/or man-made interference with the reception of the radio time signals have been practically eliminated. Operation of the
instrument can be carried out by technically non-skilled persons, and direct reading of the chronometer correction in milleseconds
is obtained. No identification is given of any particular second tick; however, this can be readily obtained by means of the
standard tone modulation periods of the WWV radio station. 相似文献
