Microfabrics of detrital quartz grains and quartz cement of four gold- and uranium-bearing conglomerates of various goldfields of the Witwatersrand Basin, South Africa, were investigated by optical and cathodoluminescence microscopy. The study revealed that the vast majority of quartz grains (<5 mm) originate from felsic magmatic source rocks. Cherts and polymineralic mineral grains, pointing to greenschist to amphibolite facies metasedimentary rocks, follow in abundance, whereas diagenetic to weakly metamorphosed quartzites are subordinate. Material from hydrothermal vein quartz is almost completely lacking, both in the sand and in the pebble fraction. No obvious relationships are discernible between the varying proportions of detrital siliciclastic components of the different reefs and their ore grades. Assuming a sedimentological control of gold distribution, this finding supports multiple sources for the detrital components, which were thoroughly mixed during transport. The post-depositional history of the sediments is characterized by a complex polyphase succession of deformation, cementation and hydrothermal alteration events. Both fragmentation and pressure solution features within detrital quartz, quartz cement and round grains of pyrite, zircon, chromite and uraninite demonstrate that these materials were present in the conglomerates during diagenesis, and, thus, are true detrital grains with abraded, rounded grain morphologies. By analogy, it is assumed that gold is also a detrital component, although most of the gold grains display characteristics of hydrothermal overprinting. During subsequent metamorphism, micro-shear zones are developed, and brittle-ductile crystal-plastic deformation and limited quartz recrystallization occur. Maximum temperatures of about 350 °C were reached on the prograde metamorphic path. Recrystallization and redistribution of detrital siliciclastic and ore minerals took place, and various hydrothermal/metamorphic minerals including chlorite, sericite, pyrophyllite and chloritoid were formed. These redistribution processes involved existing detrital minerals only and were generally isochemical because little evidence exists for the development of a secondary porosity and permeability that would allow major external inputs into the Witwatersrand conglomerates. Most of the gold grains have hydrothermal characteristics, as evidenced by their authigenic, crystalline shapes and their chemical compositions. However, these features are regarded to result from overprinting. Most likely, the gold grains experienced more drastic modifications relative to other ore components because of the ductile and mobile nature of gold. The retrograde metamorphic path is characterized by percolating radioactive fluids at T<300 °C, recorded by radiation damage indicated by cathodoluminescence alteration rims along quartz grain boundaries and microcracks. The degrees of radiation damage observed are proportional to the uranium contents of the conglomerate ores. The collective evidence of our study supports the modified placer model for the genesis of the Witwatersrand ores. This model explains most of the observations on the detrital mineral assemblage and its post-depositional modification elegantly and in a satisfactory manner.  相似文献

We report and describe an L6 ordinary chondrite fall that occurred in Ardón, León province, Spain (longitude 5.5605°W, latitude 42.4364°N) on July 9th, 1931. The 5.5 g single stone was kept hidden for 83 yr by Rosa González Pérez, at the time an 11 yr old who had observed the fall and had recovered the meteorite. According to various newspaper reports, the event was widely observed in Northern Spain. Ardón is a very well‐preserved, fresh, strongly metamorphosed (petrologic type 6), and weakly shocked (S3) ordinary chondrite with well‐equilibrated and recrystallized minerals. The mineral compositions (olivine Fa23.7±0.3, low‐Ca pyroxene Fs20.4±0.2Wo1.5±0.2, plagioclase An10.3±0.5Ab84.3±1.2), magnetic susceptibility (log χ = 4.95 ± 0.05 × 10?9 mkg?1), bulk density (3.49 ± 0.05 g   cm?3), grain density (3.58 ± 0.05 g   cm?3), and porosity (2.5 vol%) are typical for L6 chondrites. Short‐lived radionuclides confirm that the meteorite constitutes a recent fall. The 21Ne and 38Ar cosmic ray exposure ages are both about 20–30 Ma, similar to values for many other L chondrites. The cosmogenic 22Ne/21Ne ratio indicates that preatmospheric Ardón was a relatively large body. The fact that the meteorite was hidden in private hands for 83 yr makes one wonder if other meteorite falls may have experienced the same fate, thus possibly explaining the anomalously low number of falls reported in continental Spain in the 20th century.  相似文献

This work is a contribution to the understanding of the mechanical properties of non-cohesive granular materials in the presence of friction and a continuation of our previous work (Roul et al. 2010) on numerical investigation of the macroscopic mechanical properties of sand piles. Besides previous numerical results obtained for sand piles that were poured from a localized source (“point source”), we here consider sand piles that were built by adopting a “line source” or “raining procedure”. Simulations were carried out in two-dimensional systems with soft convex polygonal particles, using the discrete element method (DEM). First, we focus on computing the macroscopic continuum quantities of the resulting symmetric sand piles. We then show how the construction history of the sand piles affects their mechanical properties including strain, fabric, volume fraction, and stress distributions; we also show how the latter are affected by the shape of the particles. Finally, stress tensors are studied for asymmetric sand piles, where the particles are dropped from either a point source or a line source. We find that the behaviour of stress distribution at the bottom of an asymmetric sand pile is qualitatively the same as that obtained from an analytical solution by Didwania and co-workers (Proc R Soc Lond A 456:2569–2588, 2000).  相似文献

A new U?CPb SHRIMP age of 551?±?4?Ma on a mylonitic porphyry that intruded into the Sierra Ballena Shear Zone (Southernmost Dom Feliciano Belt, Uruguay) and a review of relevant published data make possible a more refined correlation and reconstruction of Brasiliano/Pan-African transpressional events. Paleogeographic reconstruction, kinematics and timing of events indicate a connection between the shear systems of the Dom Feliciano and Kaoko Belts at 580?C550?Ma. Sinistral transpression recorded in shear zones accommodates deformation subsequent to collision between the Congo and Río de la Plata Cratons. The correlation is strengthened by the similarity of magmatic and metamorphic ages in the Coastal Terrane of the Kaoko Belt and the Punta del Este Terrane of the Dom Feliciano Belt. This post-collisional sinistral transpression brought these units near to their final position in Gondwana and explains the different evolution at 550?C530?Ma. While in the Kaoko Belt, an extensional episode resulted in exhumation as a consequence of collision in the Damara Belt, in the Dom Feliciano Belt, sinistral transpression occurred associated with the closure of the southern Adamastor Ocean due to Kalahari-Río de la Plata collision.  相似文献

The Sierra de San Luis forms the southern tip of the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas in central Argentina. Two narrow belts of low-grade phyllites and quartz arenites, i.e. the San Luis Formation, have accommodated part of the strain-related differential exhumation of the medium- to high-grade metamorphic domains that constitute to the basement complex of the sierra. Eleven phyllite samples were subjected to the K/Ar fine-fraction dating technique. Results are interpreted in relation to the Kübler index of the illites, which indicate epimetamorphic conditions for the majority of the samples. Obtained ages between 330 and 290 Ma cover a period of compressional tectonics in the late Mississippian (Visean/Serpukhovian boundary) followed by the subsidence during the formation of the Paganzo Basin in the provinces of La Rioja and San Luis. These tectonic movements are coincident with the Toco orogeny in northern Chile and southern Bolivia. This suggests that the older K/Ar ages document the compressional stage and that younger ages record the cooling of the basement during the subsequent extensional uplift of the basement.  相似文献

The Montagne Noire forms the southernmost part of the French Massif Central. Carboniferous flysch sediments and very low-grade metamorphic imprint testify to a very external position in the orogen. Sedimentation of synorogenic clastic sediments continued up to the Viséan/Namurian boundary (≤320 Ma). Subsequently, the Palaeozoic sedimentary pile underwent recumbent folding and grossly southward thrusting. An extensional window exposes a hot core of Carboniferous HT/LP gneisses, migmatites and granites (Zone Axiale), which was uplifted from under the nappe pile. After the emplacement of the nappes on the Zone Axiale (Variscan D1), all structural levels shared the same tectonic evolution: D2 (extension and exhumation), D3 (refolding) and post-D3 dextral transtension. HT/LP-metamorphism in the crystalline rocks probably started before and continued after the emplacement of the nappes. Peak metamorphic temperatures were attained during a post-nappe thermal increment (M2). M2 occurred during ENE-directed bilateral extension, which exhumed the Zone Axiale and its frame as a ductile horst structure, flanked to the ENE by a Stephanian intra-montane basin. Map patterns and mesoscopic structures reveal that extension in ENE occurred simultaneously with NNW-oriented shortening. Combination of these D2 effects defines a bulk prolate strain in a “pinched pull-apart” setting. Ductile D2 deformation during M2 dominates the structural record. In wide parts of the nappes on the southern flank of the Zone Axiale, D1 is only represented by the inverted position of bedding (overturned limbs of recumbent D1 folds) and by refolded D1 folds. U–Pb monazite and zircon ages and K–Ar muscovite ages are in accord with Ar–Ar data from the literature. HT/LP metamorphism and granitoid intrusion commenced already at ≥330 Ma and continued until 297 Ma, and probably in a separate pulse in post-Stephanian time. Metamorphic ages older than c. 300 Ma are not compatible with the classical model of thermal relaxation after stacking, since they either pre-date or too closely post-date the end of flysch sedimentation. We therefore propose that migmatization and granite melt generation were independent from crustal thickening and caused, instead, by the repeated intrusion of melts into a crustal-scale strike-slip shear zone. Advective heating continued in a pull-apart setting whose activity outlasted the emplacement of the Variscan nappe pile. The shear-zone model is confirmed by similar orogen-parallel extensional windows with HT/LP metamorphism and granitoid intrusion in neighbouring areas, whose location is independent from their position in the orogen. We propose that heat transfer from the mantle occurred in dextral strike-slip shear zones controlled by the westward propagating rift of the Palaeotethys ocean, which helped to destroy the Variscan orogen.  相似文献

A search for RR Lyrae stars has been conducted in the publicly available data of the Northern Sky Variability Survey. Candidates have been selected by the statistical properties of their variation; the standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis with appropriate limits determined from a sample 314 known RRab and RRc stars listed in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars. From the period analysis and light-curve shape of over 3000 candidates 785 RR Lyrae have been identified of which 188 are previously unknown. The light curves were examined for the Blazhko effect and several new stars showing this were found. Six double-mode RR Lyrae stars were also found of which two are new discoveries. Some previously known variables have been reclassified as RR Lyrae stars and similarly some RR Lyrae stars have been found to be other types of variable, or not variable at all.  相似文献
