A rare, but normal, astronomical event occurred on November 9th 2006 (JST) as Mercury passed in front of the Sun from the perspective of the Earth. The abundance of the sodium vapor above the planet limb was observed by detecting an excess absorption in the solar sodium line D1 during this event. The observation was performed with a 10-m spectrograph of Czerny-Turnar system at Domeless Solar Tower Telescope at the Hida Observatory in Japan. The excess absorption was red-shifted by 10 pm relative to the solar line, and was measured at the dawnside (eastside) and duskside (westside) of Mercury. Between the dawn and dusksides, an asymmetry of total sodium abundance was clearly identified. At the dawnside, the total sodium column density was 6.1×1010 Na atoms/cm2, while it was 4.1×1010 Na atoms/cm2 at the duskside. The investigation of dawn-dusk asymmetry of the sodium exosphere of Mercury is a clue to understand the release mechanism of sodium from the surface rock. Our result suggests that a thermal desorption is a main source process for sodium vapor in the vicinity of Mercury. 相似文献

The morphology and chemical composition of garnets from principal deposits in China and in the Arkhangelsk Province consisting of kimberlites of various mineral types have been examined. The morphology of garnets (300 specimens) from the V. Grib pipe was examined, in which crystal fragments and irregular grains predominate, and dissolution traces are common. Distribution of types of garnet coloration is typical of kimberlites: lilac-violet and red garnets of ultramafic rock association are preponderant, and the proportion of yellow-orange garnets is rather high, while brown garnets are very rare. The garnet preservation degree is very low, which is related to their high primary fracturing due to cataclasis. Grains with finely matted surfaces are preponderant (90%) reflecting their high corrosion alterations. The chemical composition was determined in 56 garnet speciments from the Grib pipe. Garnets from lherzolitic and eclogitic rock types were found and garnets from magnesium and ilmenite ultramafics are present; there are no garnets from eclogites, but garnets from diamondiferous rock associations occur. The investigations demonstrated that garnets from lherzolite rock association are preponderant in kimberlites from China, as well as from other regions, while garnets from the harzburgite-dunite and from diamondiferous rock associations are rare. Marine cave communities have been a continued source of ecological surprises, among other things because of their close ecological and evolutionary ties with the deep sea. The discovery of cladorhizid sponges, the deepest occurring poriferan family, in shallow Mediterranean caves in the 1990s was one such surprise, leading to the generally accepted hypothesis that the whole family was carnivorous, an unprecedented feeding mode for sponges. The recent observation of the cave species Asbestopluma hypogea in the Mediterranean bathyal, confirmed the view that some shallow caves can occasionally shelter otherwise deep‐dwelling species. Here we present new distribution data of A. hypogea, from deep Mediterranean locations, and for the first time from Atlantic locations. Among the new Atlantic records, the most surprising ones are located in three different geographic areas (Ria de Arousa, Groix Island and Cherbourg) of the NW European coasts, from the Iberian Peninsula to the English Channel, where A. hypogea reaches SCUBA depths (5–50 m), while not sheltered in marine caves. The carnivorous sponge however reaches its shallowest occurrence (5 m), in a small cave at Groix Island. The ecological significance of these discoveries, particularly the very patchy distribution and peculiar dynamics, are noteworthy, and the shallow occurrence of A. hypogea, together with other deep‐water or uncommon species, constitute unique assemblages that must be considered in conservation plans. 相似文献

Experimental measurements of grain boundary diffusion are usually conducted on static boundaries, despite the fact that grain
boundaries deep in the Earth are frequently mobile. In order to explore the possible effect of boundary mobility on grain
boundary diffusion rates we have measured the uptake of 44Ca from a layer of 44Ca-enriched calcite powder during the static recrystallization of a single crystal of calcite at 900°C. A region about 500 μm
wide adjacent to the powder layer is heterogeneously enriched in 44Ca, and complex zoning patterns, including sharp steps in composition and continuous increases and decreases in 44Ca content, are developed. In metamorphic rocks, these would normally be interpreted in terms of changes in pressure or temperature,
Rayleigh fractionation, or episodic fluid infiltration. These explanations cannot apply to our experiments, and instead the
zoning patterns are interpreted as being due to variations in grain boundary migration rate. We have applied an analytical
model which allows the product of grain boundary diffusion coefficient and grain boundary width (D
GB
δ) to be calculated from the grain boundary migration rate and the compositional gradient away from the powder layer. The value
of D
GB
δ in the mobile grain boundaries is at least five orders of magnitude greater than the published value for static boundaries
under the same conditions. In order to allow the scale of chemical equilibrium (and hence textural evolution) to be predicted
under both experimental and geological conditions, we present quantitative diffusion-regime maps for static and mobile boundaries
in calcite, using both published values and our new values for grain boundary diffusion in mobile boundaries. Enhanced diffusion
in mobile boundaries has wide implications for the high temperature rheology of Earth materials, for geochronology, and for
interpretations of the length- and time-scales of chemical mass-transport. Moreover, zones of anomalously high electrical
conductivity in the crust and mantle could be regions undergoing recrystallization such as active shear zones, rather than

Following extended exposure to eight non-ionic compounds, the crustacean isopod Idotea balthica basteri was studied by light microscopy and histoautoradiography. Cellular modifications were found in the nervous system, the gill pleopods, the digestive system, the gonads and the moulting gland. The region of north Iceland is highly sensitive climatically owing to its location with respect to atmospheric and oceanographic fronts. In this study we present total carbonate and δ18O records of benthic and planktic Foraminifera from nine sediment cores from the North Iceland Shelf. The results of this work indicate that the deglaciation of the Vestfirdir Peninsula was completed by 10 200 cal. yr BP. The 8200 cal. yr BP cold event is present only as a minor isotopic event, and seems not to have had much of a cooling effect on the bottom waters of the northwest Iceland shelf. The Holocene maximum warmth, attributed to a stronger North Icelandic Irminger Current, occurred between ca. 7800 and 6200 cal. yr BP. Over the past 4500 cal. yr BP a general cooling trend has occurred on the North Iceland Shelf, and superimposed on this overall cooling trend are a number of oscillations between periods when relatively warmer and cooler waters occupied the shelf. Relatively cooler waters were present at 4200–4000 cal. yr BP, 3200–2900 cal. yr BP, 2500–2350 cal. yr BP and 600–200 cal. yr BP, whereas relatively warmer waters were present on the shelf at 3750–3450 cal. yr BP, 2800–2600 cal. yr BP and 1700–1000 cal. yr BP. In the interpretation of the Antarctic deep ice-core data, little attention has been given to the Holocene part of the records. As far as translation of the stable isotope content in terms of temperature is concerned, this can be understood because expected temperature changes may be obscured by isotopic noise of various origins and because no 14C dating has yet been available for this type of sequence. In this article, we focus on the Dome C and Vostok cores and on a new 850-m long ice core drilled out at Komsomolskaïa by the Soviet Antarctic Expeditions. These three sites are located in East Antarctica, on the Antarctic plateau, in a region essentially undisturbed by ice-flow conditions, so that their detailed intercomparison may allow us to identify the climatically significant isotopic signal. Our results compare well with the proximal records of Southern Hemisphere high latitudes and support the existence of a warmer climatic optimum between 10 and 6 ka y BP. The updating of geodatabases (GDB) in urban environments is a difficult and expensive task. It may be facilitated by an automatic change detection method. Several methods have been developed for medium and low spatial resolution images. This study proposes a new method for change detection of buildings in urban environments from very high spatial resolution images (VHSR) and using existing digital cartographic data. The proposed methodology is composed of several stages. The existing knowledge on the buildings and the other urban objects are first modelled and saved in a knowledge base. Some change detection rules are defined at this stage. Then, the image is segmented. The parameters of segmentation are computed thanks to the integration between the image and the geodatabase. Thereafter, the segmented image is analyzed using the knowledge base to localize the segments where the change of building is likely to occur. The change detection rules are then applied on these segments to identify the segments that represent the changes of buildings. These changes represent the updates of buildings to be added to the geodatabase. The data used in this research concern the city of Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada) and the city of Rabat (Morocco). For Sherbrooke, we used an Ikonos image acquired in October 2006 and a GDB at the scale of 1:20,000. For Rabat, a QuickBird image acquired in August 2006 has been used with a GDB at the scale of 1:10,000. The rate of good detection is 90%. The proposed method presents some limitations on the detection of the exact contours of the buildings. It could be improved by including a shape post-analysis of detected buildings. The proposed method could be integrated into a cartographic update process or as a method for the quality assessment of a geodatabase. It could be also be used to identify illegal building work or to monitor urban growth. 相似文献
