The efficiency in the computation of circular functions, such as cos(u) or sin(u), where u is a Poisson series, is important to derive accurate solutions of many problems of Celestial Mechanics, for instance, the
orbital or rotational perturbed motion of natural or artificial bodies, since expansions in terms of Legendre functions and
multiple Fourier series appear almost everywhere. Therefore, it is worth searching for alternative algorithms with lower computational
cost. In this article, we propose a method based on the idea of elimination, which was originally applied to solve numerical
problems, mainly in the case of matrix functions. Our comparisons with the traditional Taylor expansion prove that this new method can be more efficient when applied to compute the sine and cosine of a Poisson series. 相似文献

We report on preliminary results from an ongoing study of star-forming galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with the aim of understanding
the role played by the environment on their evolution. First, the chemical evolution of nine spiral galaxies located in the
inner parts of the cluster has been studied using chemical abundances recomputed for a sample of HII regions. Second, long-slit
optical spectroscopy has been obtained for 22 blue dwarf galaxies selected across the Virgo central field. This sample is
a subset of a larger list of dwarf galaxies for which deep Hα imaging has been collected. Chemical abundances have been derived
for the sample using either a direct estimation of the electron temperature or empirical calibrations. Abundance results correlate
with blue and near infrared magnitude, total HI mass and color.

Soil‐tree water relationships were studied using time domain reflectometry (TDR) in two small forested basins in Spain. The stem water content of two Mediterranean Quercus species (Quercus pyrenaica and Quercus rotundifolia) was measured using previously constructed species‐specific equations. To monitor soil moisture, a TDR station network was used in both cases. Sixteen Q. pyrenaica and six Q. rotundifolia individuals were selected to install two TDR probes in their trunks (at 20 and 120 cm above the ground) to monitor stem water content. Stem and soil water contents were measured fortnightly. The stem water content of both species showed a similar temporal trend for the period studied. A spring maximum (0·654 cm3 cm?3 for Q. pyrenaica and 0·568 cm3 cm?3 for Q. rotundifolia) was found to be associated with high transpiration and no soil moisture deficit, and a late‐summer minimum (0·520 cm3 cm?3 for Q. pyrenaica and 0·426 cm3 cm?3 for Q. rotundifolia) was associated with the end of the dry season. This drop in stem water content occurs when the available water in the soil decreases. This seasonal difference presumably reflects water withdrawn from stem storage to support the transpirational demands of the tree. Since plant water stress results in reduced stem water content and since this drop can be measured by TDR, it may be concluded that this technology offers a suitable tool for detecting plant water stress. Through a first-generation computational mechanics avatar that directly links advanced X-ray computed tomographic experimental techniques to a discrete computational model, we present a case study where we made the first attempt to characterize and model the grain-scale response inside the shear band of a real specimen of Caicos ooids subjected to triaxial compression. The avatar has enabled, for the first time, the transition from faithful representation of grain morphologies in X-ray tomograms of granular media to a morphologically accurate discrete computational model. Grain-scale information is extracted and upscaled into a continuum finite element model through a hierarchical multiscale scheme, and the onset and evolution of a persistent shear band is modeled, showing excellent quantitative agreement with experiment in terms of both grain-scale and continuum responses in the post-bifurcation regime. More importantly, consistency in results across characterization, discrete analysis and continuum response from multiscale calculations are found, achieving the first and long sought-after quantitative breakthrough in grain-scale analysis of real granular materials. 相似文献

The Borborema Province in northeastern South America is a typical Brasiliano-Pan-African branching system of Neoproterozoic orogens that forms part of the Western Gondwana assembly. The province is positioned between the São Luis-West Africa craton to the north and the São Francisco (Congo-Kasai) craton to the south. For this province the main characteristics are (a) its subdivision into five major tectonic domains, bounded mostly by long shear zones, as follows: Médio Coreaú, Ceará Central, Rio Grande do Norte, Transversal, and Southern; (b) the alternation of supracrustal belts with reworked basement inliers (Archean nuclei + Paleoproterozoic belts); and (c) the diversity of granitic plutonism, from Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian ages, that affect supracrustal rocks as well as basement inliers. Recently, orogenic rock assemblages of early Tonian (1000–920 Ma) orogenic evolution have been recognized, which are restricted to the Transversal and Southern domains of the Province.Within the Transversal Zone, the Alto Pajeú terrane locally includes some remnants of oceanic crust along with island arc and continental arc rock assemblages, but the dominant supracrustal rocks are mature and immature pelitic metasedimentary and metavolcaniclastic rocks. Contiguous and parallel to the Alto Pajeú terrane, the Riacho Gravatá subterrane consists mainly of low-grade metamorphic successions of metarhythmites, some of which are clearly turbiditic in origin, metaconglomerates, and sporadic marbles, along with interbedded metarhyolitic and metadacitic volcanic or metavolcaniclastic rocks. Both terrane and subterrane are cut by syn-contractional intrusive sheets of dominantly peraluminous high-K calc-alkaline, granititic to granodioritic metaplutonic rocks. The geochemical patterns of both supracrustal and intrusive rocks show similarities with associations of mature continental arc volcano-sedimentary sequences, but some subordinate intra-plate characteristics are also found.In both the Alto Pajeú and Riacho Gravatá terranes, TIMS and SHRIMP U–Pb isotopic data from zircons from both metavolcanic and metaplutonic rocks yield ages between 1.0 and 0.92 Ga, which define the time span for an event of orogenic character, the Cariris Velhos event. Less extensive occurrences of rocks of Cariris Velhos age are recognized mainly in the southernmost domains of the Province, as for example in the Poço Redondo-Marancó terrane, where arc-affinity migmatite-granitic and meta-volcano-sedimentary rocks show U–Pb ages (SHRIMP data) around 0.98–0.97 Ga. For all these domains, Sm–Nd data exhibit TDM model ages between 1.9 and 1.1 Ga with corresponding slightly negative to slightly positive εNd(t) values. These domains, along with the Borborema Province as a whole, were significantly affected by tectonic and magmatic events of the Brasiliano Cycle (0.7–0.5 Ga), so that it is possible that there are some other early Tonian rock assemblages which were completely masked and hidden by these later Brasiliano events.Cariris Velhos processes are younger than the majority of orogenic systems at the end of Mesoproterozoic Era and beginning of Neoproterozoic throughout the world, e.g. Irumide belt, Kibaride belt and Namaqua-Natal belt, and considerably younger than those of the youngest orogenic process (Ottawan) in the Grenvillian System. Therefore, they were probably not associated with the proposed assembly of Rodinia. We suggest, instead, that Cariris Velhos magmatism and tectonism could have been related to a continental margin magmatic arc, with possible back-arc associations, and that this margin may have been a short-lived (<100 m.y.) leading edge of the newly assembled Rodinia supercontinent. 相似文献

The Guarani aquifer system (GAS) represents one of the biggest aquifers in the world and is the most relevant groundwater resource in South America. For the first time, by combining field and laboratory measurements, a high-resolution aquifer analog model of fluvial–aeolian sediments of the GAS in São Paulo State (Brazil) is constructed. Three parallel sections of frontal outcrops, 28 m × 5.8 m, and two parallel sections of lateral outcrops, 7 m × 5.8 m, are recorded during open-pit mining of sandy sediments and describe in detail the three-dimensional distribution of the local lithofacies and hydrofacies. Variations of hydraulic conductivity, K, and porosity, n, are resolved on the centimeter scale, and the most permeable units of the fluvial–aeolian facies association are identified. The constructed aquifer analog model shows moderate hydraulic heterogeneity and a mean K value of 1.36 × 10?4 m/s, which is greater than the reported range of K values for the entire GAS in São Paulo State. The results suggest that the examined sedimentary unit constitutes a relevant portion of the GAS in São Paulo State in the context of groundwater extraction and pollution. Moreover, the constructed aquifer analog is considered an ideal basis for future numerical model experiments, aiming at in-depth understanding of the groundwater flow and contaminant transport patterns at this GAS portion or at comparable fluvial–aeolian facies associations. 相似文献

Most previous studies related to the recent tectonic development of southeastern Betic Cordillera, and in particular the south of Almería, agree with the kinematic variety that can be observed in the post-Miocene structures at different scales. This variety is difficult to explain if we consider only the regional stress field related to the convergence of the Eurasian and African plates that remained relatively steady over the last 9 Ma. This work proposes a block tectonics with horizontal and vertical relative movements driven by strike-slip movements of major faults to explain the variety of kinematics observed in the area from Middle Miocene to present. The combined activity of the Alpujarras fault zone (dextral strike-slip) and the Carboneras fault zone (sinistral strike-slip) induces, within the major block bounded by them, the squeezing of minor pre-existing fault bounded crustal blocks. This process generates traction areas inside the escaping block, which are linked with the existence of gradients of westward movement rate. This tectonics can explain some of the structures related with the extensional tectonics predominant in the south of Almería province and the development of the minor and major morphostructures driven by faults with different kinematics. The tectonics of blocks proposed is useful to give a coherent interpretation of apparently incoherent local structural data into a regional and homogeneous compressional stress field.Sadly, Professor José L. Ninety-two surface sediment samples were collected in Guanabara Bay, one of the most prominent urban bays in SE Brazil, to
investigate the spatial distribution of anthropogenic pollutants. The concentrations of heavy metals, organic carbon and particle
size were examined in all samples. Large spatial variations of heavy metals and particle size were observed. The highest concentrations
of heavy metals were found in the muddy sediments from the north western region of the bay near the main outlets of the most
polluted rivers, municipal waste drainage systems and one of the major oil refineries. Another anomalous concentration of
metals was found adjacent to Rio de Janeiro Harbour. The heavy metal concentrations decrease to the northeast, due to intact
rivers and the mangrove systems in this area, and to the south where the sand fraction and open-marine processes dominate.
The geochemical normalization of metal data to Li or Al has also demonstrated that the anthropogenic input of heavy metals
have altered the natural sediment heavy metal distribution. 相似文献
