Populations of the riparian pioneer species Populus nigra L. which establish on alluvial bars within river channels modulate sediment dynamics and fluvial landforms. Dense cohorts of P. nigra have colonized gravel point bars along the channelized River Garonne, France, during the last 20 years and have enhanced the vertical, lateral and longitudinal development of the bars. For this period, the geomorphic characteristics of two wooded point bars on this laterally stable river are closely linked to the spatial distribution and intensity of establishment and resistance of different cohorts of P. nigra. Furthermore, P. nigra colonization dynamics were controlled by engineer effects of this same species. This relationship is illustrated by a significant correlation between key geomorphic and biological variables measured in situ and characterized with a set of four aerial photographs taken between 2000 and 2010. The development of wooded point bars, which are discrete biogeomorphic units, over the studied period, appear to result from a specific biogeomorphic positive feedback of matter aggregation and vegetation establishment related to sediment trapping and stabilization by pioneer engineer plants. We propose a conceptual model of biogeomorphic unit construction for channelized, lateral stable rivers. We consider the resultant biogeomorphic units as functional from an ecological point of view because P. nigra enhances at the cohort scale (i) its own inherent capacity to resist hydrogeomorphic disturbances, and (ii) its resilience capacity as a result of successful colonization, especially downstream of mature poplar stands. We present a minimal conceptual model for the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation which incorporates the advection of salinity and the basic dynamics of the oceanic pycnocline. Four tracer transport processes following Gnanadesikan in Science 283(5410):2077–2079, (1999) allow for a dynamical adjustment of the oceanic pycnocline which defines the vertical extent of a mid-latitudinal box. At the same time the model captures the salt-advection feedback (Stommel in Tellus 13(2):224–230, (1961)). Due to its simplicity the model can be solved analytically in the purely wind- and purely mixing-driven cases. We find the possibility of abrupt transition in response to surface freshwater forcing in both cases even though the circulations are very different in physics and geometry. This analytical approach also provides expressions for the critical freshwater input marking the change in the dynamics of the system. Our analysis shows that including the pycnocline dynamics in a salt-advection model causes a decrease in the freshwater sensitivity of its northern sinking up to a threshold at which the circulation breaks down. Compared to previous studies the model is restricted to the essential ingredients. Still, it exhibits a rich behavior which reaches beyond the scope of this study and might be used as a paradigm for the qualitative behaviour of the Atlantic overturning in the discussion of driving mechanisms. 相似文献

The Central-West region of Argentina was seriously affected by a series of convective summer storms on January–February of 2013 generating many debris flows and rockfall in the Central Andes mountain regions. In particular, the unreported 8th February event caused the sad death of a 10-year-old child being completely ignored by society and local authorities. Despite this, meteorological conditions associated with this event and further episodes were rarely measured and determined mainly due to scarce meteorological stations in Andean mountain areas. In this paper, meteorological data from CMORPH algorithm and measurements of surrounding gauges were analyzed for estimating the triggering precipitation value of this event. As well, the particular debris flow channeled into the main branch of the Amarilla gully in the Agua Negra valley was geomorphologically described. The amount of precipitation associated with this debris flow was 5.5 and 13.2 mm accumulated previous to the event. This violent debris flow was generated in a talus zone in a periglacial environment located just below a covered rock glacier. However, the influence of the permafrost thawing in this process is not feasible. The altitude of the 0 °C isotherm was lower during the previous days of the event, and no monitoring on permafrost is available for this area. The volume of removed mass was estimated in 5 × 104 m3, and the mean velocity was 35 km/h. Boulders of 4 m diameter were found in the source area, while the deposit is up to 75% sandy with clasts that hardly exceed 10 cm in the alluvial fan distal part. Herein the main objective is to advice about the probable catastrophic impact of similar events in the future. These findings could be useful for hazard remediation, mitigation, and prevention plans for the Agua Negra international pass under construction. 相似文献

Nitrogen isotope values (δ15N) of surface sediments in the German Bight of the North Sea exhibit a significant gradient from values of 5–6‰ of the open shelf sea to values above 11‰ in the German Bight. This signal has been attributed to high reactive N (Nr) loading enriched in 15N from rivers and the atmosphere. To better understand the processes that determine the intensity and spatial distribution of δ15N anomalies in surface sediments, and to explore their usefulness for reconstructions of pristine N-input from rivers, we modeled the cycling of the stable isotopes 14N and 15N in reactive nitrogen through the ecosystem of the central and southern North Sea (50.9–57.3°N, 3.4°W−9.2°E) for the year 1995. The 3D-ecosystem model ECOHAM amended with an isotope-tracking module was validated by δ15N data of surface sediments within the model domain. A typical marine value (δ15Nnitrate=5‰) was prescribed for nitrate advected into the model domain at the seaside boundaries, whereas δ15Nnitrate of river inputs were those measured bi-monthly over 1 year; δ15N values of atmospheric deposition were set to 6‰ and 7‰ for NOx and NHy, respectively. The simulated δ15N values of different nitrogen compounds in the German Bight strongly depend on the mass transfers in the ecosystem. These fluxes, summarized in a nitrogen budget for 1995, give an estimate of the impacts of hydrodynamical and hydrological boundary conditions, and internal biogeochemical transformations on the nitrogen budget of the bight. 相似文献

Fieldwork, radiometric (40Ar/39Ar and 14C) ages and whole-rock geochemistry allow a reconstruction of eruptive stages at the active, mainly dacitic, Pichincha Volcanic
Complex (PVC), whose eruptions have repeatedly threatened Quito, most recently from 1999 to 2001. After the emplacement of
basal lavas dated at ∼1100 to 900 ka, the eruptive activity of the old Rucu Pichincha volcano lasted from ∼850 ka to ∼150 ka
before present (BP) and resulted in a 15 × 20 km-wide edifice, which comprises three main building stages: (1) A lower stratocone
(Lower Rucu, ∼160 km3 in volume) developed from ∼850 to 600 ka; (2) This edifice was capped by a steeper-sided and less voluminous cone (the Upper
Rucu, 40–50 km3), the history of which started 450–430 ka ago and ended around 250 ka with a sector collapse; (3) A smaller (8–10 km3) but more explosive edifice grew in the avalanche amphitheatre and ended Rucu Pichincha's history about 150 ka ago. The Guagua
Pichincha volcano (GGP) was developed from 60 ka on the western flank of Rucu with four growth stages separated by major catastrophic
events. (1) From ∼60 to 47 ka, a basal effusive stratocone developed, terminating with a large ash-and-pumice flow event.
(2) This basal volcano was followed by a long-lasting dome building stage and related explosive episodes, the latter occurring
between 28–30 and 22–23 ka. These first two stages formed the main GGP (∼30 km3), a large part of which was removed by a major collapse 11 ka BP. (3) Sustained explosive activity and viscous lava extrusions
gave rise to a new edifice, Toaza (4–5 km3 in volume), which in turn collapsed around 4 ka BP. (4) The ensuing amphitheatre was partly filled by the ∼1-km3 Cristal dome, which is the historically active centre of the Pichincha complex. The average output rate for the whole PVC
is 0.29 km3/ka. Nevertheless, the chronostratigraphic resolution we obtained for Lower Rucu Pichincha and for the two main edifices of
Guagua Pichincha (main GGP and Toaza), leads to eruptive rates of 0.60–0.65 km3/ka during these construction stages. These output rates are compared to those of other mainly dacitic volcanoes from continental
arcs. Our study also supports an overall SiO2 and large-ion lithophile elements enrichment as the PVC develops. In particular, distinctive geochemical signatures indicate
the involvement of a new magma batch at the transition between Rucu and Guagua. At the GGP, the same phenomenon occurs at
each major collapse event marking the onset of the ensuing magmatic stage. Since the 11-ka-BP collapse event, this magmatic
behaviour has led to increasingly explosive activity. Four explosive cycles of between 100 and 200 years long have taken place
at the Cristal dome in the past 3.7 ka, and repose intervals between these cycles have tended to decrease with time. As a
consequence, we suggest that the 1999–2001 eruptive period may have initiated a new eruptive cycle that might pose a future

Uranyl Retention on Quartz—New Experimental Data and Blind Prediction Using an Existing Surface Complexation Model 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The adsorption behaviour of uranyl onto seven different samples of quartz was studied in batch experiments. Sea-sand (0.1–0.3 mm),
Fil-Pro 12/20 (1–2 mm) and five Min-U-Sil samples with smaller particle sizes (5, 10, 15, 30 and 40 μm) were used. The uptake
curves show “pH adsorption edges” in the range of pH 4–5. A good agreement of the new data with literature data was found
when plotting surface-normalised distribution coefficients versus pH. Differences in the adsorption behaviour for pre-treated
and untreated sea-sand samples were detectable resulting in a shift of the pH edge to higher pH values after treatment. A
literature surface complexation model was applied for blind predictions of the experimental results. The simulations described
the experimental observations quite well for the Min-U-Sil samples. For the two coarser quartz samples, the calculated over-predictions
were explained by the larger-than-expected measured specific surface area and measurable amounts of associated minerals, for
Fil-Pro 12/20 and sea-sand, respectively. Dissolution of the samples was studied as a function of pH. After 5 days, the measured
Si concentrations were all higher than equilibrium quartz solubilities, but lower than those of amorphous silica. With increasing
pH, dissolved silica increased. This strongly suggests that formation of dissolved uranyl–silicato complexes have to be considered
based on measured silica concentrations. 相似文献

A substantial part of Mercury's iron core may be stably stratified because the temperature gradient is subadiabatic. A dynamo would operate only in a deep sublayer. We show that such a situation arises for a wide range of values for the heat flow and the sulfur content in the core. In Saturn the upper part of the metallic hydrogen core could be stably stratified because of helium depletion. The magnetic field is unusually weak in the case of Mercury and unusually axisymmetric at Saturn. We study numerical dynamo models in rotating spherical shells with a stable outer region. The control parameters are chosen such that the magnetic Reynolds number is in the range of expected Mercury values. Because of its slow rotation, Mercury may be in a regime where the dipole contribution to the internal magnetic field is weak. Most of our models are in this regime, where the dynamo field consists mainly of rapidly varying higher multipole components. They can hardly pass the stable conducting layer because of the skin effect. The weak low-degree components vary more slowly and control the structure of the field outside the core, whose strength matches the observed field strength at Mercury. In some models the axial dipole dominates at the planet's surface and in others the axial quadrupole is dominant. Differential rotation in the stable layer, representing a thermal wind, is important for attenuating non-axisymmetric components in the exterior field. In some models that we relate to Saturn the axial dipole is intrinsically strong inside the dynamo. The surface field strength is much larger than in the other cases, but the stable layer eliminates non-axisymmetric modes. The Messenger and Bepi Colombo space missions can test our predictions that Mercury's field is large-scaled, fairly axisymmetric, and shows no secular variations on the decadal time scale. 相似文献

The Surface Albedo Of The Vatnajökull Ice Cap, Iceland: A Comparison Between Satellite-Derived And Ground-Based Measurements 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The temporal and spatial variations in the surface albedo of the Vatnajökull ice cap, Iceland, are investigated. A time series of the surface albedo is composed for the summer of 1996 using satellite radiance measurements from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). This time series is compared with ground measurements carried out during a glacio-meteorological experiment during the same summer on the ice cap. The AVHRR is able to reproduce the development in time of the surface albedo fairly well. The large systematic differences found for some of the stations on the ice are attributed to sub-pixel-scale variations in the albedo. An attempt is made to confirm this hypothesis using satellite radiance measurements carried out by the Thematic Mapper (TM) and measurements made with a portable albedometer. The TM has a pixel size of 30 × 30 m whereas the pixel size of the AVHRR is 1 × 1 km. Although the TM measurements show greater variability in the albedo than do the AVHRR measurements, the large systematic difference remains. Measurements with the portable albedometer show a large spread in the albedo at sites with large systematic differences. This implies that the scale of the albedo variations is smaller than the scale of the AVHRR and TM pixels. 相似文献

atlases, and a new method is proposed to test collision rate coefficientsfor the NLTE model of OI.Using effective temperatures
derived from Balmer lines, oxygen abundances from O triplets in 83 solar-type stars within the solar neighborhood spanning
a metallicity range of [Fe/H] = −2.3 ... +0.4 have been determined.NLTE effects are not negligible, especially in warm stars(Teff ≥ 5800) with [Fe/H] ≥ −0.5.
