More than 490 elliptical aerobraking and science phasing orbits made by Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) in 1997 and 1998 provide unprecedented coverage of the solar wind in the vicinity of the orbits of the martian moons Phobos and Deimos. We have performed a comprehensive survey of magnetic field perturbations in the solar wind to search for possible signatures of solar wind interaction with dust or gas escaping from the moons. A total of 1246 solar wind disturbance events were identified and their distribution was examined relative to Phobos, the Phobos orbit, and the Deimos orbit. We find that the spatial distribution of solar wind perturbations does not increase near or downstream of Phobos, Phobos’ orbit, or Deimos’ orbit, which would have been expected if there is significant outgassing or dust escape from the martian moons. Of the 1246 magnetic field perturbation events found in the MGS data set, 11 events were found within 2000 km of the Phobos orbit, while three events were found within 2000 km of the Deimos orbit. These events were analyzed in detail and found to likely have other causes than outgassing/dust escape from the martian moons. Thus we conclude that the amount of gas/dust escaping the martian moons is not significant enough to induce detectable magnetic field perturbations in the solar wind. In essence we have not found any clear evidence in the MGS magnetic field data for outgassing or dust escape from the martian moons.  相似文献

The behavior of tantalum and zirconium in pegmatitic systems has been investigated through the determination of Ta and Zr solubilities at manganotantalite and zircon saturation from dissolution and crystallization experiments in hydrous, Li-, F-, P- and B-bearing pegmatitic melts. The pegmatitic melts are synthetic and enriched in flux elements: 0.7–1.3 wt% Li2O, 2–5.5 wt% F, 2.8–4 wt% P2O5 and 0–2.8 wt% B2O3, and their aluminum saturation index ranges from peralkaline to peraluminous (ASILi = Al/[Na + K + Li] = 0.8 to 1.3) with various K/Na ratios. Dissolution and crystallization experiments were conducted at temperatures varying between 700 and 1,150°C, at 200 MPa and nearly water-saturated conditions. For dissolution experiments, pure synthetic, end member manganotantalite and zircon were used in order to avoid problems with slow solid-state kinetics, but additional experiments using natural manganotantalite and zircon of relatively pure composition (i.e., close to end member composition) displayed similar solubility results. Zircon and manganotantalite solubilities considerably increase from peraluminous to peralkaline compositions, and are more sensitive to changes in temperature or ASI of the melt than to flux content. A model relating the enthalpy of dissolution of manganotantalite to the ASILi of the melt is proposed: ∆H diss (kJ/mol) = 304 × ASILi − 176 in the peralkaline field, and ∆H diss (kJ/mol) = −111 × ASILi + 245 in the peraluminous field. The solubility data reveal a small but detectable competitivity between Zr and Ta in the melt, i.e., lower amounts of Zr are incorporated in a Ta-bearing melt compared to a Ta-free melt under the same conditions. A similar behavior is observed for Hf and Ta. The competitivity between Zr (or Hf) and Ta increases from peraluminous to peralkaline compositions, and suggests that Ta is preferentially bonded to non-bridging oxygens (NBOs) with Al as first-neighbors, whereas Zr is preferentially bonded to NBOs formed by excess alkalies. As a consequence Zr/Ta ratios, when buffered by zircon and manganotantalite simultaneously, are higher in peralkaline melts than in peraluminous melts.  相似文献

The through-diffusion of HTO, 22Na+ and 36Cl in kaolinite, homo-ionic Na-illite and homo-ionic Na-montmorillonite was measured at a high degree of compaction as a function of the salt concentration in the ‘external solution’, i.e. in the solution in contact with the clay sample. The clays were chosen for this study because of their differences in the number and nature of ion exchange sites leading to different proportions of interlayer-, inter-particle and free pore water. It was found that the diffusive mass transfer of Na+ in Na-montmorillonite and Na-illite increased with decreasing external salt concentration, while the opposite trend was observed for the diffusion of Cl. These trends are more pronounced in the case of Na-montmorillonite than in Na-illite, while almost no salt effect was observed for kaolinite. Similarly no salt effect was observed for the diffusion of HTO through all of the clays tested. These observations are in agreement with a conceptual model where it is assumed that cations diffuse preferentially in the interlayer or diffuse double-layer porosity, while anions are almost completely excluded from these regions. In the case of Na+ diffusion, the salt effects can be explained by an influence on the concentration gradient of diffusing cations, while in the case of Cl the external salt concentration has an effect on the accessible porosity. Effective diffusion coefficients of Cl fulfil the same relationship to porosity as those of the uncharged HTO, when using accessible porosities for such a comparison. Furthermore it is shown that pore diffusion coefficients for the three tracers are fairly well correlated with the respective diffusion coefficients in bulk water, if the effective diffusion coefficients for Na+ are derived from calculated tracer concentration gradients in the interlayer or diffuse double-layer porosities.  相似文献

Diffusion experiments with HTO, 36Cl, Br, I, 22Na+, 85Sr2+ and 134Cs+ at trace concentrations in a single sample of Opalinus Clay are modeled with PHREEQC’s multicomponent diffusion module. The model is used first in a classical approach to derive accessible porosities, geometrical factors (the ratio of pore tortuosity and constrictivity) and sorption behavior of the individual tracers assuming that the clay is homogeneous. The accessible porosity for neutral species and cations is obtained from HTO, the anion exclusion volume from 36Cl and Br, and the cation exchange capacity from 22Na+. The homogeneous model works well for tritium, the anions and 22Na+. However, the 85Sr2+ and 134Cs+ experiments show an early arrival of the tracer and a front-form that suggest a dual porosity structure. A model with 10% dead-end pores, containing 19% of the total exchange capacity, can satisfactorily calculate all the experimental data. The Cs+ diffusion model builds on a 3-site exchange model, constructed from batch sorption data. The excellent agreement of modeled and measured data contradicts earlier reports that the exchange capacity for Cs+ would be smaller in diffusion than in batch experiments.The geometrical factors for the anions are 1.5 times larger than for HTO, and for the cations 2-4 times smaller than for HTO. The different behavior is explained by a tripartite division of the porespace in free porewater, diffuse double layer (DDL) water, and interlayer water in montmorillonite. Differences between estimated and observed geometrical factors for cations are attributed to increased ion-pairing of the divalent cations in DDL water as a result of the low relative dielectric permittivity. Interlayer and/or surface diffusion contributes significantly to the diffusive flux of Cs+ but is negligible for the other solutes. The geometrical factors for anions are higher than estimated, because pore constrictions with overlapping double layers force the anions to take longer routes than HTO and the cations. Small differences among the anions can also be attributed to different ion-pairing in DDL water.  相似文献

The main sediment depocenter along the Oman margin is the Al Batha turbidite system that develops in the Gulf of Oman basin. It is directly connected to the wadi Al Batha, and forms a typical sand and mud rich point source system that acts as regional sediment conduit and feeds a ~ 1000 km2 sandy lobe.The Al Batha lobe depositional architecture has been investigated in detail using very high-resolution seismic, multibeam echosounder data and sediment cores. Several scales of depositional architecture can be observed. The Al Batha lobe is composed of several depositional units, made of stacked elementary sediment bodies (thinner than 5 m) that are each related to a single flow event. The lobe is connected to the feeder system through a channel-lobe transition zone (CLTZ) that extends on more than 25 km. The lobe can be divided into proximal, middle and distal lobe areas. The proximal lobe is an area of erosion and by-pass with small axial feeder channels that rapidly splay into several small distributaries. They disappear in the mid-lobe area where deposits consist of vertically stacked tabular to lens-shaped sediment bodies, with a lateral continuity that can exceed 10 km. The distal lobe fringe shows a classical facies transition towards thin-bedded basin plain deposits.Sub-surface deposits consist of sandy turbidites and hyperpycnites, interbedded with fine-grained deposits (thin turbidites, hyperpycnites, or hemipelagites). Although these distal deposits are mainly related to flow transformations and concentration evolution, they highlight the importance of flooding of the wadi Al Batha on the sediment transfer to the deep basin. The thick sandy hyperpycnites recovered in such a distal area are also possibly related to the initial properties of gravity flows, in relation to the flooding characteristics of mountainous desert streams.Finally, the Al Batha lobe depositional architecture is typical of sand-rich lobes found within “small”, sand and mud rich turbidite systems fed by mountainous “dirty” rivers. Turbidite sedimentation in the Al Batha system appears to be primarily controlled by the strong climatic and geomorphic forcing parameters (i.e. semi-arid environment with ephemeral, mountainous rivers subjected to flash-flooding).  相似文献

In this paper, central elements of the Solar Shield project, launched to design and establish an experimental system capable of forecasting the space weather effects on high-voltage power transmission system, are described. It will be shown how Sun–Earth system data and models hosted at the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) are used to generate two-level magnetohydrodynamics-based forecasts providing 1–2 day and 30–60 min lead-times. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) represents the end-user, the power transmission industry, in the project. EPRI integrates the forecast products to an online display tool providing information about space weather conditions to the member power utilities. EPRI also evaluates the economic impacts of severe storms on power transmission systems. The economic analysis will quantify the economic value of the generated forecasting system. The first version of the two-level forecasting system is currently running in real-time at CCMC. An initial analysis of the system’s capabilities has been completed, and further analysis is being carried out to optimize the performance of the system. Although the initial results are encouraging, definite conclusions about system’s performance can be given only after more extensive analysis, and implementation of an automatic evaluation process using forecasted and observed geomagnetically induced currents from different nodes of the North American power transmission system. The final output of the Solar Shield will be a recommendation for an optimal forecasting system that may be transitioned into space weather operations.  相似文献

In irrigated agricultural landscapes, land-use conversion may have landscape-level social, hydrological, and ecological effects. We used geographic information systems (GIS) and interviews to analyze development effects on irrigation in the Henry's Fork Watershed, Idaho. Farmers developed irrigation there in the 19th century, and incidental recharge from canal seepage and flood irrigation raised groundwater levels and expanded wetlands. Cohesive culture in agricultural communities sustained irrigation systems until amenity-driven demographic shifts beginning in the 1970s led to development approved by local governments with land-use planning but no water-management authority. Although only 5% of irrigated land has been converted, development has fragmented irrigated landscapes and made canal-system operation more difficult, potentially reducing groundwater levels, wetland extent, and return flows critical to downstream irrigators and fish and wildlife. We discuss future scenarios, highlighting the need for increased communication among local and state governments regarding land use and water management in irrigated landscapes across the West.  相似文献

We describe a new calibration procedure included in the production process of Scintec’s displaced-beam laser scintillometers (SLS-20/40) and its effect on their measurement accuracy. The calibration procedure determines the factual displacement distances of the laser beams at the receiver and transmitter units, instead of assuming a prescribed displacement distance of 2.70 mm. For this study, four scintillometers operated by Wageningen University and the German Meteorological Service were calibrated by Scintec and their data re-analyzed. The results show that significant discrepancies may exist between the factual and the prescribed displacement distances. Generally, the factual displacement is about 0.1 mm smaller than 2.70 mm, but extremes varied between 0.04 and 0.24 mm. Correspondingly, using non-calibrated scintillometers may result in biases as large as 20 % in the estimates of the inner-scale length, $l_{0}$ , the structure parameter of the refractive index, $C_{n_{_2}}$ , and the friction velocity, $u_{*}$ . The bias in the sensible heat flux was negligible, because biases in $C_{n_{_2}}$ and $u_{*}$ cancel. Hence, the discrepancies explain much of the long observed underestimations of $u_{*}$ determined by these scintillometers. Furthermore, the calibration improves the mutual agreement between the scintillometers for $l_{0}$ , but especially for $C_{n_{_2}}$ . Finally, it is noted that the measurement specifications of the scintillometer do not expire and hence the results of the calibration can be applied retroactively.  相似文献

The trace element signatures of fluids were investigated by leaching experiments on natural samples of partly altered mafic igneous rocks recovered from the drilling site 1,256 of ODP Leg 206 on the Cocos plate (Central America). Experiments with ultrapure water were performed at 400 °C/0.4 GPa and 500 °C/0.7 GPa. Both fluids and residual solids were examined to obtain the partition coefficients (Dfluid/rock) of various trace elements. Element partition coefficients (Dfluid/rock) obtained at 500 °C/0.7 GPa are significantly lower compared to results obtained at 400 °C/0.4 GPa, which is in contrast to observations at higher pressures (2.2–6 GPa) and temperatures between 700 and 1,400 °C (Kessel et al. in Earth Planet Sci Lett 237: 873–892, 2005a; Spandler et al. in Chem Geol 239: 228–249, 2007). This finding may indicate a considerable pressure effect on the leaching processes and strongly divergent fluid–rock interactions in the upper part of a subduction zone at 0.4–0.7 GPa compared to deeper subduction areas with higher pressures. Furthermore, this may be interpreted as one of the earliest fractionation processes during the subduction of crustal material.  相似文献
