The spatial distribution of different C3 and C4 grass species in tropical montane areas is commonly influenced by a number of factors that include site-specific topography. Hence, the distribution of these grasses across topographic gradients can vary significantly. In this study, we investigate the influence of topographic factors (elevation, slope and aspect) on the spatial distribution of Festuca grass species in a commonage area, comprising agro-biodiversity conservation land use. Integration of the topographic variables using GIS and binary logistic regression (LR) modelling showed that C3, Festuca grass species distribution can be predicted or mapped with an accuracy of 80% in the landscape under study. The study contributes to understanding the spatial distribution of C3 grass species and provides valuable information for designing and optimizing rangeland conservation in the subtropical montane landscapes. 相似文献

Developments at ISO/REMCO and its Impact on the Production and Use of Geological Reference Materials

During the past decade the work of ISO/REMCO, the International Organization for Standardization’s Technical Committee on Reference Materials, was dedicated to achieving global harmonisation, and true involvement of the member countries. The first major accomplishment was the clarification of the terminology in the definitions for reference material and certified reference material, which were published as an amendment to ISO Guide 30 in 2008. The next milestone was the recognition that ISO Guide 34 (‘General requirements for the competence of reference material producers’) be used in conjunction with ISO/IEC 17025 for the accreditation of reference material producers. The third edition of ISO Guide 34 published in November 2009, clarifies the acceptable procedures for the certification of reference materials. This paper will discuss the role of ISO/REMCO in formalising the procedures for the accreditation of reference material producers and the evolution of the terms reference material and certified reference material. The paper will conclude with a case study, where a primary method in a single laboratory – one of the recognised acceptable metrologically valid procedures according to ISO Guide 34 – was used for the certification of reference materials. The reference materials are South African Reference Material SARM 2 (Syenite), SARM 3 (Lujavrite) and SARM 4 (Norite) from the suite of six NIMROCs that were originally certified by the Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) in South Africa in the 1970s. 相似文献

The ecology of the St Lucia estuary in South Africa is of unique international importance. During droughts the estuary experiences
high salinities, with values above that of seawater. Ion-poor groundwater flowing into the estuary from prominent sand aquifers
along its eastern shoreline forms low-salinity habitats for salt-sensitive biota. During droughts, plants and animals can
take refuge in the groundwater discharge zone until the condition in the estuary regains tolerable salinity. Simulations of
the groundwater discharge indicate that the flow can persist during droughts over at least a decade, and be of great important
for the resilience of the estuary. Anthropogenic activities have reduced the river inflow and made the St Lucia estuary more
sensitive to droughts. The groundwater has thereby become increasingly important for the estuary’s ecology. Protection of
the groundwater discharge along the shoreline itself and actions to increase the groundwater recharge are therefore important

Rapid vertebrate recuperation in the Karoo Basin of South Africa following the End-Permian extinction 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The mass extinction that occurred at the end of the Permian Period approximately 251 Mya is widely accepted as the most devastating extinction event in Earth’s history. An estimated 75–90% of global diversity from both marine and terrestrial realms disappeared synchronously within at most one million and perhaps as little as 100,000 years. To date, most research has focused on the marine record and it is only recently that a few fully preserved terrestrial Permo-Triassic boundary sequences have been discovered. The main Karoo Basin of South Africa hosts several well-preserved non-marine Permo-Triassic boundary sequences that have been the focus of intensive research into the nature of the extinction and its possible causes. This study uses sedimentological and biostratigraphic data from boundary sequences near Bethulie in the southern Karoo Basin to make assumptions about the rates and timing of recovery of the terrestrial fauna in this portion of southern Gondwana after the extinction event. The biostratigraphic data gathered from 277 in situ vertebrate fossils allows us to define more accurately the temporal ranges of several taxa. These data also confirm a more precise extinction rate in this part of the basin of 54% of latest Permian vertebrate taxa, followed by the onset of a relatively rapid recovery, within an estimated 40–50 thousand years (based on the calculation of floodplain aggradation rates and compaction ratios) that included the origination of at least 12 new vertebrate taxa from amongst the survivors. 相似文献

Groundwater recharge: an overview of processes and challenges 总被引:11,自引:13,他引:11
Since the mid-1980s, a relative explosion of groundwater-recharge studies has been reported in the literature. It is therefore
relevant to assess what is now known and to offer further guidance to practitioners involved in water-resource development.
The paper summarizes current understanding of recharge processes, identifies recurring recharge-evaluation problems, and reports
on some recent advances in estimation techniques. Emphasis is accorded to (semi-)arid regions because the need for information
is greatest in those areas – groundwater is often the only water source, is vulnerable to contamination, and is prone to depletion.
Few studies deal explicitly with groundwater recharge in temperate and humid zones, because recharge is normally included
in regional groundwater investigations as one component of the water balance. The resolution of regional water-balance studies
in (semi-)arid areas is, in contrast, often too low to quantify the limited recharge component with sufficient precision.
Despite the numerous studies, determination of recharge fluxes in (semi-)arid regions remains fraught with uncertainty. Multiple
tracer approaches probably offer the best potential for reliable results in local studies that require 'at-point' information.
However, many investigations indicate that these approaches are not straightforward, because in some cases preferential flow
contributes as much as 90% of the estimated total recharge. Tracer results (e.g. Cl–, 3H) must therefore be interpreted with care in areas with multi-modal flow in the vadose zone. Moreover, accurate estimation
of total chloride deposition is essential, and tritium may be influenced by vapour transport at low flux rates. In addition,
paleoclimatic and paleohydrological conditions may cause discrepancies between measured actual processes and calculated long-term
averages.
The frequently studied issues of localized recharge and spatial variability need not be a problem if concern is with regional estimates. The key for practitioners is
the project objective, which dictates whether 'at-point' or area-/groundwater-based estimation methods are appropriate. Many
indirect (wadi) recharge studies reported in the literature are site specific; the relationship between 'at point' hydraulic properties
and channel-reach losses demands further investigation.

An approach to groundwater exploration and utilisation is presented in an area that was traditionally regarded as having scarce groundwater resources. The area is situated in the Northern Province of South Africa and is known as the Nebo Plateau, which is formed by the Nebo Granite of the Lebowa Granite Suite, Bushveld Igneous Complex. Several historic tectonic events resulted in previously unutilised aquifers, of which the Spitskop Complex and geological lineaments associated with the Wonderkop Fault are examples. Both these areas show promising results, although high fluoride content in the groundwater may pose a problem. This can, however, be solved by treatment processes. The paper emphasises that the influence of the regional geology must be taken into account when exploring and developing groundwater in areas underlain by hard crystalline rocks. 相似文献

The generation and growth of waves in deep water is controlled by winds blowing over the sea surface. In fully developed sea
states, where winds and waves are in equilibrium, wave parameters may be calculated directly from the wind velocity. We provide
an Excel spreadsheet to compute the wave period, length, height and celerity, as well as horizontal and vertical particle
velocities for any water depth, bottom slope, and distance below the reference water level. The wave profile and propagation
can also be visualized for any water depth, modeling the sea surface change from sinusoidal to trochoidal and finally cnoidal
profiles into shallow water. Bedload entrainment is estimated under both the wave crest and the trough, using the horizontal
water particle velocity at the top of the boundary layer. The calculations are programmed in an Excel file called WAVECALC,
which is available online to authorized users. Although many of the recently published formulas are based on theoretical arguments,
the values agree well with several existing theories and limited field and laboratory observations. WAVECALC is a user-friendly
program intended for sedimentologists, coastal engineers and oceanographers, as well as marine ecologists and biologists.
It provides a rapid means to calculate many wave characteristics required in coastal and shallow marine studies, and can also

Sequences of last-glacial age contain valuable palaeoclimatic information but are often difficult to date because the environment has been unfavourable for deposition of datable organic material. This paper presents age-estimates, determined by optically stimulated luminescence, for sediments from the type site of the so-called ‘coversands’ (periglacial aeolian deposits) in The Netherlands. These improve the chronology of this type site considerably, allowing age limits (22–17 kyr BP) to be set, for the first time, for the important phase of widespread permafrost degradation and aeolian deflation recorded in these deposits. Aeolian deposition occurred intermittently for most of the Last Glacial Maximum and the Late-glacial phases. Based on luminescence dating, sand-sheet deposition was concentrated between ca. 17–14 kyr ago, and dune formation was dominant during the Younger Dryas.
