Groundwater is a very important natural resource in Khanyounis Governorate (the study area) for water supply and development.
Historically, the exploitation of aquifers in Khanyounis Governorate has been undertaken without proper concern for environmental
impact. In view of the importance of quality groundwater, it might be expected that aquifer protection to prevent groundwater
quality deterioration would have received due attention. In the long term, however, protection of groundwater resources is
of direct practical importance because, once pollution of groundwater has been allowed to occur, the scale and persistence
of such pollution makes restoration technically difficult and costly. In order to maintain basin aquifer as a source of water
for the area, it is necessary to find out, whether certain locations in this groundwater basin are susceptible to receive
and transmit contamination. This study aims to: (1) assess the vulnerability of the aquifer to contamination in Khanyounis
governorate, (2) find out the groundwater vulnerable zones to contamination in the aquifer of the study area, and (3) provide
a spatial analysis of the parameters and conditions under which groundwater may become contaminate. To achieve that, DRASTIC
model within geographic information system (GIS) environment was applied. The model uses seven environmental parameters: depth
of water table, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of vadose zone, and hydraulic conductivity to
evaluate aquifer vulnerability. Based on this model and by using ArcGIS 9.3 software, an attempt was made to create vulnerability
maps for the study area. According to the DRASTIC model index, the study has shown that in the western part of the study area
the vulnerability to contamination ranges between high and very high due to the relatively shallow water table with moderate
to high recharge potential, and permeable soils. To the east of the previous part and in the south-eastern part, vulnerability
to contamination is moderate. In the central and the eastern part, vulnerability to contamination is low due to depth of water
table. Vulnerability analysis of the DRASTIC Model indicates that the highest risk of contamination of groundwater in the
study area originates from the soil media. The impact of vadose zone, depth to water level, and hydraulic conductivity imply
moderate risks of contamination, while net recharge, aquifer media, and topography impose a low risk of aquifer contamination.
The coefficient of variation indicates that a high contribution to the variation of vulnerability index is made by the topography.
Moderate contribution is made by the depth to water level, and net recharge, while impact of vadose zone, hydraulic conductivity,
soil media, and Aquifer media are the least variable parameters. The low variability of the parameters implies a smaller contribution
to the variation of the vulnerability index across the study area. Moreover, the “effective” weights of the DRASTIC parameters
obtained in this study exhibited some deviation from that of the “theoretical” weights. Soil media and the impact of vadose
zone were the most effective parameters in the vulnerability assessment because their mean “effective” weights were higher
than their respective “theoretical” weights. The depth of water table showed that both “effective” and “theoretical” weights
were equal. The rest of the parameters exhibit lower “effective” weights compared with the “theoretical” weights. This explains
the importance of soil media and vadose layers in the DRASTIC model. Therefore, it is important to get the accurate and detailed
information of these two specific parameters. The GIS technique has provided an efficient environment for analysis and high
capabilities of handling large spatial data. Considering these results, DRASTIC model highlights as a useful tool that can
be used by national authorities and decision makers especially in the agricultural areas applying chemicals and pesticides
which are most likely to contaminate groundwater resources. 相似文献

Cryoturbated Upper Chalk is a dichotomous porous medium wherein the intra‐fragment porosity provides water storage and the inter‐fragment porosity provides potential pathways for relatively rapid flow near saturation. Chloride tracer movement through 43 cm long and 45 cm diameter undisturbed chalk columns was studied at water application rates of 0·3, 1·0, and 1·5 cm h?1. Microscale heterogeneity in effluent was recorded using a grid collection system consisting of 98 funnel‐shaped cells each 3·5 cm in diameter. The total porosity of the columns was 0·47 ± 0·02 m3 m?3, approximately 13% of pores were ≥ 15 µm diameter, and the saturated hydraulic conductivity was 12·66 ± 1·31 m day?1. Although the column remained unsaturated during the leaching even at all application rates, proportionate flow through macropores increased as the application rate decreased. The number of dry cells (with 0 ml of effluent) increased as application rate decreased. Half of the leachate was collected from 15, 19 and 22 cells at 0·3, 1·0, 1·5 cm h?1 application rates respectively. Similar breakthrough curves (BTCs) were obtained at all three application rates when plotted as a function of cumulative drainage, but they were distinctly different when plotted as a function of time. The BTCs indicate that the columns have similar drainage requirement irrespective of application rates, as the rise to the maxima (C/Co) is almost similar. However, the time required to achieve that leaching requirement varies with application rates, and residence time was less in the case of a higher application rate. A two‐region convection–dispersion model was used to describe the BTCs and fitted well (r2 = 0·97–0·99). There was a linear relationship between dispersion coefficient and pore water velocity (correlation coefficient r = 0·95). The results demonstrate the microscale heterogeneity of hydrodynamic properties in the Upper Chalk. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

While finding the optimal route for users with physical disabilities and personalizing routes for each user, on the one hand, and collaborative wayfinding, on the other hand, have been addressed in the pedestrian navigation systems literature, there has not been much research on combining the two activities. The problem associated with wayfinding approaches solely based on information about network segments and personal preferences is that the information about segments in the database may not, correctly and/or adequately address user preferences. The problem associated with wayfinding approaches solely based on the ratings given to routes by wheelchair users is the lack of rates (or scores) for all possible routes between all possible origin‐destination pairs in the network. This article discusses an approach to combine these two approaches for wayfinding to augment each other's shortcomings. To evaluate the personalized wayfinding approach, we utilize a route index, called a comparison index. The results show that with a P‐value of 9%, the routes obtained from our approach are more accessible than the routes obtained from another approach developed in another study. To evaluate the collaborative wayfinding approach, a Monte Carlo simulation was conducted which reflects the updates in routes as users' feedbacks become available. 相似文献

The high mountains of Hindu-Kush Karakoram and Himalaya(HKKH) contain a large volume of snow and ice, which are the primary sources of water for the entire mountainous population of HKKH. Thus, knowledge of these available resources is very important in relation to their sustainable use. A Modified Positive Degree Day Model was used to simulate daily discharge with the contribution of snow and ice melt from the Shigar River Basin, Central Karakoram, Pakistan. The basin covers an area of 6,921 km2 with an elevation range of 2,204 to 8,611 m a.s.l.. Forty percent of the total area is glaciated among which 20% is covered by debris and remaining 80% by clean ice and permanent snow. To simulate daily discharge, the entire basin was divided into 26 altitude belts. Remotely sensed land cover types are derived by classifying Landsat images of 2009. Daily temperature and precipitation from Skardu meteorological station is used to calibrate the glacio-hydrological model as an input variable after correlating data with the Shigar station data(r=0.88). Local temperature lapse rate of 0.0075 °C/m is used. 2 °C critical temperature is used to separate rain and snow from precipitation. The model is calibrated for 1988~1991 and validated for 1992~1997. The model shows a good Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency and volume difference in calibration(0.86% and 0.90%) and validation(0.78% and 6.85%). Contribution of snow and ice melt in discharge is 32.37% in calibration period and 33.01% is validation period. The model is also used to predict future hydrological regime up to 2099 by using CORDEX South Asia RCM considering RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate scenarios.Predicted future snow and ice melt contributions in both RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 are 36% and 37%, respectively. Temperature seems to be more sensitive as compared to other input variables, which is why the contribution of snow and ice in discharge varies significantly throughout the whole century. 相似文献

Core samples are still today considered as the standard measurement against all other measurements which must be compared. Core analysis usually focuses on the worse portion of the reservoir due to the fact that core recovery has rarely been well in a highly fractured zone; hence, permeability measured from core sample is often not representative. Core analysis is a common method to identify small-scale fractures of the well and permeability and porosity; however, there are some limitations in the core procedure such as it is highly expensive and unidirectional and has a low recovery coefficient in fractured zone. In contrast, there tends to be a mistrust and even a suspicion of those logging instruments that make measurements which threaten to replicate or even replace the “sacred core.” Thus, image logs are more useful to study the subsurface fractures in these such cases and the logs which come closest to achieving this are the high-resolution micro resistivity (OBMI) and acoustic geological imaging (UBI). The core and OBMI-UBI result was matched in order to verify the log measurements. Furthermore, FMI data were integrated with other open-hole logs to derive a permeability curve. As demonstrated in the case studies, it is believed that the permeability in the basement could be reasonably evaluated using this method. As a result, this exercise has proven to be very valuable, not only for demonstrating the value of the log data, but also it has also highlighted some significant limitations of the core in water-based mud and oil-based mud systems. 相似文献

Landslides are introduced as regional movements, which influence different engineering structures such as roads, railways, and dams and cause the person’s death. Identification of landslide zones may decrease the financial losses and human injuries or deaths. This study tries to achieve a landslide susceptibility mapping in Cham-gardalan catchment by weighting the main criteria and the membership functions of fuzzy logic. For this, we applied the best relationship function between the presence and absence of landslides as well as a collection of the elements. At first, the landslide points were identified by the means of some components those of satellite images, topographical (1:50,000) and geographical (1:100,000) maps, field visits, and Google Earth software followed by the preparation of landslide distribution maps. Then, all effective landslide factors such as percentage of slope, slope aspect, height, geology, land uses, distance from roads, distance from drainages, distance from breakage, and precipitation map have been utilized in order to conduct the fuzzy analyses. Landslide susceptibility map was performed by fuzzy operators (Gamma, Product, Sum, Or, And) in the study area. After fuzzificating and weighting, the effective criteria of landslides were determined through fuzzy Gamma operators with the landaus of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, and 0.9 and by comparing final maps for making an appropriate model of landslide susceptibility mapping. The regional susceptibility map represents the landslide-prone areas in five categories those of very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. Our results indicated that among the applied operators, Gamma with landau of 0.9 can be used as an appropriate method for mapping the landslide susceptibility due to the suitable fuzzification of given criteria based on landslide distribution maps. In addition, the elements of road, percentage of slope, distance from drainage, and geology were recognized as the most important factors for occurring the landslides. 相似文献

The Mirge-Naqshineh gold district is situated at northwest of Iran with a NW-trending brittleductile shear zone. It is hosted by Precambrian meta-sedimentary and meta-volcanic units traversed by mineralized quartz veins. In terms of cross-cutting relationships and sulfide content three types of quartz veins are identified in the region. Among those, parallel to bedding quartz vein(type Ⅰ) is the main host for gold mineralization. Gold is found in three different forms: 1) submicrometer-size inclusions of gold in arsenian pyrite, 2) as electrum and 3) in the crystal lattice of sulfides(pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite). Six types of pyrite(Py1-Py6) were identified in this ore reserve. Py3 coexists with arsenopyrite and contains the greatest As-Au concentrations. There is a negative correlation between the As and S contents in Py2 and Py3, implying the substitution of sulfur by arsenic. Pyrites and mineralized quartz veins were formed via metamorphic-hydrothermal fluid and reflect the gold-transportation as Au(HS)_2~- under reducing and acidic conditions. The gold precipitation mainly controlled by crystallization of arsenian pyrite during fluid/rock interactions and variation of fO_2. The volcanic host rock has played an important role in gold concentration, as Py3 in this rock contains inclusion of gold particles, but gold is within the lattice of pyrite in phyllite or other units. 相似文献

The Central West Bank aquifer (CWB) is one of the most important resources of fresh groundwater of Palestine. The geology of the area consists mainly of karstic and permeable limestones and dolomites interbedded with argillaceous beds of late Albian–Turonian age. Exploitation of the CWB aquifer, combined with lack of information required to understand the groundwater pattern, represents a challenge for reservoir management. The present work reports hydrogeochemistry, microbiology and environmental isotope data from spring water samples, which were utilized to understand recharge mechanisms, geochemical evolution and renewability of groundwater in CWB aquifer. Besides the major chemical compositions, ionic ratios were used to delineate mineral-solution reactions and weathering processes. Interpretation of chemical data suggests that the chemical evolution of groundwater is primarily controlled by (1) water–rock interactions, involving dissolution of carbonate minerals (calcite and dolomite), and (2) cation exchange processes. The measured equation of the local meteoric water line is δD?=?5.8 δ18O?+?9.9. Stable isotopes show that precipitation is the source of recharge to the groundwater system. The evaporation line has a linear increasing trend from south to north direction in the study area. All analyzed spring waters are suitable for irrigation, but not for drinking purposes. The results from this study can serve as a basis for decision-makers and stakeholders, with the intention to increase the understanding of sustainable management of the CWBs. 相似文献

Soil erosion is a major environmental problem in arid and semi-arid areas. Although bioengineering is important in preventing soil erosion, plant architecture and mechanical properties in these areas are rarely studied. In this study, in order to evaluate the potential of native plants to reduce soil erosion in semi-arid regions, their above-ground (e.g., stem density, radius of the stem, etc.) and below-ground (e.g., root area ratio, root tensile strength, etc.) characteristics were measured in the field and laboratory. Five indicators, namely, stem density (SD), sediment obstruction potential (SOP), plant stiffness (MEI), relative soil detachment (RSD), and root cohesion (Cr), were taken into account. Each indicator was scored according to a five-point scale (0?=?low, 4?=?high), and then, the score of each indicator was represented on an ameba diagram. Finally, for understanding traits of plants and evaluating their potential to control rill and gully erosion, the area occupied by the ameba diagram was studied. The results indicated that the shrub Ziziphus spina-christi (MEI?=?108.35 N, RSD?=?0.398, Cr?=?8.34 kPa, SOP?=?0.097, and SD?=?0.00270) is a very suitable native plant species for controlling both the gully and rill erosion. In addition, Scariola orientalis is effective for sediment obstruction, but its low scores on the MEI and RSD indicators imply that it is not able to control gully development. Furthermore, Noaea mucronata, Platychaete glaucescens, Astragalus gummifer, Alhagi persarum, Lycium shawii, and Prosopis farcta have a distinct potential to reduce the rate of gully erosion. These results have wide applicability for adopting soil conservation measures to other semi-arid environments. 相似文献
