A record spanning almost 20 years of suspended sediment and discharge measurements on two reaches of an agricultural watershed is used to assess the influence of in‐channel sediment supplies and bed composition on suspended sediment concentrations (SSC). We analyse discharge‐SSC relationships from two small streams of similar hydrology, climate and land use but widely different bed compositions (one dominated by sand, the other by gravel). Given that sand‐dominated systems have more fine sediment available for transport, we use bed composition and the relative proportion of surface sand and gravel to be representative of in‐channel sediment supply. Both high flow events and lower flows associated with onset and late recessional storm flow (‘low flows’) are analysed in order to distinguish external from in‐channel sources of sediment and to assess the relationship between low flows and sediment supply. We find that SSC during low flows is affected by changes to sediment supply, not just discharge capacity, indicated by the variation in the discharge‐SSC relationship both within and between low flows. Results also demonstrate that suspended sediment and discharge dynamics differ between reaches; high bed sand fractions provide a steady supply of sediment that is quickly replenished, resulting in more frequent sediment‐mobilizing low flow and relatively constant SSC between floods. In contrast, SSC of a gravel‐dominated reach vary widely between events, with high SSC generally associated with only one or two high‐flow events. Results lend support to the idea that fine sediment is both more available and more easily transported from sand‐dominated streambeds, especially during low flows, providing evidence that bed composition and in‐channel sediment supplies may play important roles in the mobilization and transport of fine sediment. In addition, the analysis of low‐flow conditions, an approach unique to this study, provides insight into alternative and potentially significant factors that control fine sediment dynamics. Using incoherent scatter data from Millstone Hill, we investigated the variations in the shape of the daytime, mid-latitude ionospheric electron density profile associated with changes in geomagnetic activity. The analysis performed was to deduce the dependence upon the 3-hr geomagnetic index Kp of h(Nm), h(0·7 Nm) above and below Nm, the plasma scale height HT in the range 500–1000 km, and the ratio N(1000)N(hm). The electron density data used spanned the solar maximum years 1968–1971. Daytime data from the period 1000 to 1600 LT were averaged separately for summer, winter and spring-fall. It is shown that the mean value M of the factor M = B cos θ sec χ used by Titheridge (1972) to relate the Faraday rotation Ω from a geostationary satellite to the total electron content NN up to 2000 km is practically the same (to within 1–2 per cent) as the M value used to relate the NT and Ω values both computed up to 1000 km. Taking advantage of this identity, we have used the linear relationship obtained between the ionospheric parameters and Kp to deduce the height at which M should be evaluated as a function of Kp.  相似文献

Ordinary kriging and non-linear geostatistical estimators are now well accepted methods in mining grade control and mine reserve estimation. In kriging, the search volume or ‘kriging neighbourhood’ is defined by the user. The definition of the search space can have a significant impact on the outcome of the kriging estimate. In particular, too restrictive neighbourhood, can result in serious conditional bias. Kriging is commonly described as a ‘minimum variance estimator’ but this is only true when the neighbourhood is properly selected. Arbitrary decisions about search space are highly risky. The criteria to consider when evaluating a particular kriging neighbourhood are the slope of the regression of the ‘true’ and ‘estimated’ block grades, the number of kriging negative weights and the kriging variance. Search radius is one of the most important parameters of search volume which often is determined on the basis of influence of the variogram. In this paper the above-mentioned parameters are used to determine optimal search radius.  相似文献

Serikagni Formation (lower–middle Miocene) was studied at four outcrop sections within Sinjar Anticline, Para (the western plunge), Jaddala, Sinjar, (Southern limb), and Noaniaa (Northern limb) of Sinjar Mountain, which is part of foothill zone in northwest Iraq. This formation is composed of Globigerina limestone, marly limestone intercalated with marl, deposited in quiet, deep marine environment. Palynological analyses and the percentages of palynological matter were determined. Palynofacies analysis was recorded for paleoenvironmental interpretation. Mineralogical investigations and petrographical analyses were done. Geochemical analyses for the determination of the major constituents (CaO, MgO, and I.R.),the secondary constituents (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Na2O, K2O, and trace elements (Sr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Co, Cr, Pb) in the rock samples were accomplished. The calcite is the predominant mineral which is mostly of micrite types as well as spary calcite. The insoluble residue (I.R.) has negative correlation with the carbonate percentages in the rock formation as observed by the XRD analyses. Clay minerals show low occurrence represented by palygorskite, montmorillonite, and sepiolite. Geochemical differences can be noticed between the limy and marly facies constituting the same formation. Differences are also observed between the geochemistry and mineralogy of the four studied localities such as the relatively more pure limestone in Jaddala and Para sections than Sinjar and Noaniaa sections which indicate the higher percentages of marly limestone. This is believed to be due to the geographic location of these sections within the main depositional environment, as well as the consequences of sea level fluctuation. Two palynofacies (PF-1) and (PF-2) were identified. Palynomorphs are more numerous with high percentages (>80%) of amorphous organic matter (AOM) is present in the PF-1. The lithological association of this palynofacies is limestone and marly limestone. This palynofacies 1, indicate the deep marine depositional environment. The second palynofacies (PF-2) reflect low quantities (less than 40%) of AOM, with increase of phytoclasts (translucent-type) to more than 30% and the miospores (small spores and pollen grains) to more than 20%. The lithological association of this palynofacies is marl and marly limestone. This palynofacies 2, indicate the nearshore and shallow marine depositional environment.  相似文献

We present dark energy models in an anisotropic Bianchi type-VI0 (B-VI0) space-time with a variable equation of state (EoS). The EoS for dark energy ω is found to be time dependent and its existing range for derived models is in good agreement with the recent observations of SNe Ia data (Knop et al. in Astrophys. J. 598:102 2003), SNe Ia data with CMBR anisotropy and galaxy clustering statistics (Tegmark et al. in Astrophys. J. 606:702, 2004b) and latest a combination of cosmological datasets coming from CMB anisotropies, luminosity distances of high redshift type Ia supernovae and galaxy clustering (Hinshaw et al. in Astrophys. J. Suppl. 180:225, 2009; Komatsu et al. in Astrophys. J. Suppl. 180:330, 2009). The cosmological constant Λ is found to be a positive decreasing function of time and it approaches a small positive value at late time (i.e. the present epoch) which is corroborated by results from recent supernovae Ia observations. The physical and geometric aspects of the models are also discussed in detail.  相似文献

Abstract

One of the world's largest irrigation networks, based on the Indus River system in Pakistan, faces serious scarcity of water in one season and disastrous floods in another. The system is dominated both by monsoon and by snow and glacier dynamics, which confer strong seasonal and inter-annual variability. In this paper two different forecasting methods are utilized to analyse the long-term seasonal behaviour of the Indus River. The study also assesses whether the strong seasonal behaviour is dominated by the presence of low-dimensional nonlinear dynamics, or whether the periodic behaviour is simply immersed in random fluctuations. Forecasts obtained by nonlinear prediction (NLP) and the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) methods show that the performance of NLP is relatively better than the SARIMA method. This, along with the low values of the correlation dimension, is indicative of low-dimensional nonlinear behaviour of the hydrological dynamics. A relatively better performance of NLP, using an inverse technique, may also be indicative of the low-dimensional behaviour. Moreover, the embedding dimension of the best NLP forecasts is in good agreement with the estimated correlation dimension. This provides evidence that the nonlinearity inherent in the monthly river flow due to the snowmelt and the monsoon variations dominate over the high-dimensional components and might be exploited for prediction and modelling of the complex hydrological system.

The city of Jazan is situated on the eastern flank of the Read Sea and considered as one of the fastest growing cities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This zone attracts a lot of investors for various development projects. Recently, many new projects have been implemented and constructed in this region including new urban areas, infrastructures, and industrial projects. However, historically this area has been challenged from different types of geological hazards. These geological hazards are catastrophic events that can cause human injury, loss of life, and economic devastation. The current study is aimed at evaluating the different types of geological hazards in Jazan city. This study is based on interpretation of satellite data such as LANDSAT and QuickBird images, existing geological maps, and physiographical characteristics with the help of field and laboratory analyses. The results of the analysis indicate that there exist various types of geological hazards in the study area mostly related to the natural factors which include (1) Sabkha soil; (2) Salt dome; (3) Loess soil; and (4) Sand dune/drift. Further, the findings of this study revealed that, most of these geological hazards have a severe impact on the ongoing development activities in Jazan area.  相似文献

Currently, the most widely accepted hypothesis to explain high As concentrations in Bangladesh groundwaters is that dissolved organic C (DOC) reduces solid Fe (hydr)oxides and mobilizes sorbed arsenate. The nature of the DOC and its release mechanism are still controversial. Based on weekly to biweekly sampling over the course of one monsoon cycle at six monitoring wells of different depths, it is proposed that storativity changes drive natural DOC release from clay–peat layers to the adjacent aquifers. With a decrease in hydraulic heads during the dry season, total mineralization and DOC concentrations increased. With the onset of the rainy season and an increase in hydraulic heads, release of clay–peat derived components stopped and vertical water displacement due to groundwater recharge from rainwater occurred, causing aquifer flushing and a decrease in total mineralization and DOC concentrations. Total As and DOC concentrations correlated over depth. However, at the depth of maximum concentrations, the As peak was observed during the rainy season. At present, the reason for this inverse seasonal trend between As and DOC is unclear. Higher mineralization or DOC concentrations could lead to increased As sorption or the increased arsenite release is a time-lag abiotic or microbial response to the DOC peak. The vulnerability of the Pleistocene aquifer towards increased As concentrations was found to be much higher than previously assumed. Though sorption capacities were determined to be higher than in the Holocene aquifer, probably due to intact Fe (hydr)oxides, long-term continuous As input from overlying clay and peat layers by the proposed seasonal storativity changes has led to increased aqueous As concentrations of 85 μg/L, considerably higher than drinking water standards. Until now, aquifer and especially aquitard and aquiclude hydraulics have not been considered sufficiently when attempting to explain As mobilization in Bangladesh.  相似文献
