The Gabbro Akarem (Late Precambrian) intrusion is concentrically zoned with a dunite core surrounded by lherzolite–clinopyroxenite
enveloped by olivine–plagioclase hornblendite and plagioclase hornblendite. Cu–Ni–PGE mineralization is closely associated
with peridotite, especially in the inner, olivine-rich core (dunite pipes) where net-textured and massive sulfides (pyrrhotite,
pentlandite, chalcopyrite) are found in association with Al–Mg-rich spinel and Cr-magnetite. Primary magmatic textures are
well preserved; however, deformation and mobilization due to shearing are locally observed. Platinum-group minerals (PGM)
documented from the deposit are: merenskyite (PdTe2) and michenerite (PdTeBi), as well as palladian bismuthian melonite (Ni,Pd) (Te,Bi)2. These minerals occur in intimate association with hessite (Ag2Te) and electrum (Au0.65Ag0.31Bi0.04) in two distinct textural positions: (1) as inclusions in pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and rarely chalcopyrite and (2) at sulfide–silicate
grain boundaries and on microfractures in base-metal sulfides (BMS) and olivine associated with serpentine and secondary magnetite.
Textural features suggest that PGM were exsolved from monosulfide solid solution over a wide range of temperatures. Late-stage,
low-temperature hydrothermal solutions led to redistribution of PGE. Mineralized samples show Ni/Cu ratios ranging from 0.2
to 2 with an average of 1.0. The (Pt + Pd + Rh)/(Os + Ir + Ru) ratio is generally >6 in most samples, and Os, Ru, and Ir are
below the detection limit (2 ppb). The PGE contents show positive correlation with S only at low sulfur contents. The PGE
patterns of Gabbro Akarem are similar to those of Alaskan-type deposits. Compared with stratiform deposits, Gabbro Akarem
is depleted in PGE. The consistently low PGE contents of the mineralization and their uniform distribution in the ultramafic
rocks despite the high sulfur content of the rock is attributed to rapid crystallization of sulfides in a highly dynamic environment.

About 40% of the water supply of Cairo, Egypt, is drawn from a groundwater reservoir located southeast of the Nile Delta. Several thousand shallow wells supply drinking water to the farmers from the same groundwater reservoir, which is recharged by seepage from Ismailia canal, the irrigation canal network, and other wastewater lagoons in the same areas. Sewage water lagoons were located at the high ground of the area, recharging contaminated water into the aquifer. Since the groundwater in this area is used for drinking purposes, it was decided to treat the sewage water recharging the aquifer for health reasons. In this paper a solution to the problem is presented using an injection well recharging good quality water into the aquifer. A pumping well located at a distance downstream is used to pump the contaminated water out of the aquifer. A three-dimensional solute transport model was developed to study the concentration distribution with remediation time in the contaminated zone. 相似文献

Hazaribagh is a densely populated area of Dhaka city where about 185 leather processing industries have been operating and discharging solid and liquid wastes directly to the low-lying areas, river and natural canals without proper treatment. The area is covered by alluvial deposits of Holocene age and is underlain by Pleistocene Madhupur clay. The Dupi Tila Formation of Mio-Pliocene age underlain by this yellowish gray to brick red clay bed serves as the main water-bearing aquifer of Dhaka city. To assess the environmental degradation as well as the groundwater environment, major anions, cations and heavy metals of water samples, heavy metals and organic carbon content of sediment samples were analyzed in this study. Analyses of tannery effluent detect high concentration of Na+, Mg2+, Cl− and SO
4
2−
followed by Ca2+, NH
4
+
and K+ with remarkable contents of some trace elements, mainly Cr, Fe, Mn, S, Ni and Pb. Higher accumulations of Cr, Al and Fe are observed in topsoil samples with significant amounts of Mn, Zn, Ni and Cu. Concentrations of ions and all the investigated trace elements of sampled groundwater were within the maximum allowable limit for drinking water of the Department of Environment, Bangladesh (DoE), and World Health Organization (WHO). However, excessive concentrations of Cr, Pb, etc., have already been reported in the shallow groundwater (10–20 m) of the area. Modern Diatom Assemblages in Surface Sediments from Estuarine Systemsin the Southeastern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Paleoecological reconstructions of Holocene sea-level changes in Argentinean coastal regions were based mainly on ecological
data gathered from other regions, as there was a lack of information on modern estuarine diatom distributions. The aim of
the present work was to assess the spatial variation of diatom assemblages in two representative estuaries of Argentina in
order to gather ecological information for paleoecological reconstructions in the region. The two selected estuaries have
different geomorphologic features and salinity regimes: Mar Chiquita Lagoon is shallow, which prevents the development of
a stable salinity gradient as it occurs in the Quequén Grande River. Surface sediment samples were taken from selected stations
representative of the environmental gradient from the inlet to the inner reaches of both estuaries. Cluster analysis defined
three diatom zones at Mar Chiquita: marine/brackish assemblages dominate the inlet (zone I), where salinity, tidal range and
current speed are higher. The brackish/freshwater tychoplankton Staurosira construens var. venter and Staurosirella pinnata dominate the inner lagoon (zone II), where environmental conditions are very variable and concentrations of suspended sediments
are higher. Brackish/freshwater euryhaline diatoms dominate the headwaters (zone III). On the other hand, the Quequén Grande
River was divided into three diatom zones: coastal taxa are distributed at the inlet (zone I), while the middle estuary (zone
II) is dominated by brackish/freshwater euryhaline taxa. At the upper estuary region (zone III), freshwater diatoms dominate,
and the halophobous Nitzschia denticula increased in abundance values. Diatom distributions were most closely related to the salinity gradient at Quequén Grande
River than at Mar Chiquita Lagoon. Fossil data of a sequence from Mar Chiquita Lagoon (Las Gallinas Creek) were compared to
the modern data set in order to search for analogies between fossil and modern diatom assemblages. DCA results showed that
fossil diatom assemblages have modern counterparts. Most diatom assemblages of Las Gallinas Creek fall within Mar Chiquita
zone III, representing a shallow brackish/freshwater environment, with low salinity fluctuations
(~1–9‰) and no tidal influence. Therefore, our modern diatom data provide useful analogs to interpret paleoenvironments in

The temperature (T) evolution of the barium carbonate (BaCO3) structure was studied using Rietveld structure refinements based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction and a powdered synthetic
sample. BaCO3 transforms from an orthorhombic, Pmcn, α phase to a trigonal, R3m, β phase at 811°C. The orthorhombic BaCO3 structure is isotypic with aragonite, CaCO3. In trigonal R3m BaCO3, the CO3 group occupies one orientation and shows no rotational disorder. The average <Ba–O> distances increase while the <C–O> distances
decrease linearly with T in the orthorhombic phase. After the 811°C phase transition, the <Ba–O> distances increase while C–O distances decrease.

Summary. Adopting a multiple scale method, the non-linear evolution of fully developed dunes of non-cohesive sand is studied using Kennedy's model. It is shown that both the two- and three-dimensional problems are, in general, governed by three coupled second-order partial differential equations. However, for boundary conditions appropriate to localized solutions these equations reduce to one for the two-dimensional problem and to two for the three-dimensional problem. It is also found that the uniform Stokes 'wave' is a solution of the general problem, and the stability of this solution (on the long time-scale of the non-linear theory) is analysed for various values of the parameters of the problem. The significance of the soliton solution of the single equation for the two-dimensional problem is discussed and the relevance of the localized solutions of the two coupled equations to the formation and interaction of fully developed dunes is indicated. The results are in broad agreement with the cumulative effects of dune movement over long periods. 相似文献

The paper applies some of the principles of pragmatism to the environmental health crisis of arsenic pollution in the groundwater of Bangladesh. This hazard affects between 28 and 57 million people and it has been called “the largest mass poisoning of a population in history”. Such hyperbole aside, the authors consider the dysfunctional nature of central and local government in Bangladesh, which at all levels can be said to have failed water consumers. This leads to a discussion of the nature of governance generally, particularly with regard to two principles derived from the pragmatism of John Dewey: first, an orientation to political action through local, community-based experimentation; and, second, a conviction that participatory democracy draws its strength from the beliefs and attitudes distributed in social networks. The paper then assesses a number of interventions, for instance the World Bank’s large-scale Bangladesh Arsenic Mitigation Water Supply Project which has faced administrative problems since its inception in 1997 and was very slow to find its feet. NGOs with a stake in arsenic mitigation are also highlighted, particularly for their role in the so-called franchise state. It is argued that a number of conditions of inertia and resistance explain the sluggish response to the arsenic hazard. Indeterminacy about the science and technology of arsenic is one factor, and another is the distribution of power at the local level. The paper argues that future policies and projects would do well to consider deliberative democracy in guises appropriate to rural Bangladesh. This must include better information availability and opportunities for participation at the village level, for instance in civic science. The overall conclusion is that pragmatic principles are helpful in promoting community-focused mitigation measures but that accountability is essential if policies are to avoid problems of local power, patronage and clientelism. 相似文献

Removal of dyes by low-cost adsorbents is an effective method in wastewater treatment. Iranian natural clays were determined to be effective adsorbents for removal of a basic dye (methylene blue) from aqueous solutions in batch processes. Characterizations of the clays were carried out by X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Effects of the operational parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, solution pH and temperature were investigated on the adsorption performance. Adsorption isotherms like Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin were used to analyze the adsorption equilibrium data and Langmuir isotherm was the best fit. Adsorption kinetics was investigated by pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models and the results showed that the adsorption system conforms well to the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption (ΔS°, ΔH° and ΔG°) were obtained and showed that the adsorption processes were exothermic. 相似文献

Benthic foraminiferal fauna are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively at three stratigraphic sections in Eastern Desert of Egypt (Serai, Duwi, and Um El Huetat). These sections embrace the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) interval which is represented by the occurrence of five distinctive beds. These beds constitute the Dababiya Quarry Member at the lower part of Esna Formation. The occurrence of them indicates an expanded and relatively continuous record across the P/E boundary. The organic-rich clay layer (bed no. 1 of the Dababiya Quarry Member) marks the start of the PETM event. This bed is characterized by the extinction of all benthic foraminiferal fauna except for the occurrence of rare agglutinated foraminiferal species. The presence of these species indicates an oceanic anoxic event at the sea floor. High concentration of phosphatic contents including fish remains occurred in the middle part of the PETM (bed nos. 2 and 3 of the Dababiya Quarry Member) with the continuous absence of benthic foraminiferal fauna except for few specimens at the top of bed 3. Bed nos. 4 and 5 of the Dababiya Quarry Member represent the upper part of the PETM and the initial stage of sea floor recovery. Low diversity and abundance of benthic foraminiferal taxa occurred within these beds, represented by Valvulineria scrobiculata, Lenticulina midwayensis, Loxostomoides appliane, and Siphogenerinoides eleganta. This phenomenon continues upward during the post-PETM event. The Paleocene velasco-type benthic foraminifera Angulogavelinella avnimelechi and Coryphostoma midwayensis species are extinct within the advent of the PETM event. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages at the studied sections are dominated by midway-type fauna with little representative of velasco-type fauna. The velasco-type species are represented with high abundance at Serai section and with low densities at Um El Huetat section, while at Duwi section, they rarely occurred. This suggests outer neritic-upper bathyal (150–400 m) setting at Serai section and mostly middle-outer neritic (50–150 m) setting at Um El Huetat and Duwi sections. 相似文献
