The nature and evolution of north-south asymmetry in the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) has been investigated using solar and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) observations for the past few solar cycles. The mean heliographic latitude of the HCS (averaged over the solar longitude) a 0 is found to be non-zero during many solar rotations indicating that the large-scale solar magnetic field is more ordered in a system where the origin is shifted away from the centre of the Sun. We have shown that the asymmetry in HCS manifests in different forms depending on the transition heliographic latitude of the reversal of dominant polarity of the IMF ( T) and the difference in the maximum latitudinal extension of the HCS in the two solar hemispheres (). The classification of the observed asymmetry during 1971–1985 and its effect on IMF observations near Earth has been studied. We have also inferred the sign of T during 1947–1971 using inferred IMF polarity data. The observed sign reversals of T suggest the importance of periodicities less than the solar cycle period to be associated with the evolution of asymmetry in HCS. Asymmetry in sunspot activity about the solar equator does not seem to relate consistently well with the asymmetry in HCS about the heliographic equator.  相似文献

Scanning Sky Monitor (SSM) onboard AstroSat is an X-ray sky monitor in the energy range 2.5–10 keV. SSM scans the sky for X-ray transient sources in this energy range of interest. If an X-ray transient source is detected in outburst by SSM, the information will be provided to the astronomical community for follow-up observations to do a detailed study of the source in various other bands. SSM instrument, since its power-ON in orbit, has observed a number of X-ray sources. This paper discusses observations of few X-ray transients by SSM. The flux reported by SSM for few sources during its Performance Verification phase (PV phase) is studied and the results are discussed.  相似文献

During winter, south of the Indo-Sri Lanka Channel (ISLC), the observed sea-surface temperature (SST) distribution shows a distinct mini-cold pool (MCP) with relatively cooler waters (SST<28 °C). All the available satellite and in-situ measurements are utilized to characterize and explain the mechanisms that govern the evolution of the observed MCP. During December–January, the northeasterly surface winds blow through the ISLC manifesting a patch of strong winds in the south with peak intensity of about 10 m/s, enhance surface turbulent heat losses and drive near-surface vertical mixing resulting in the observed cooling. The vertical temperature profiles in this region also show cooling and deepening of the near-surface isothermal layer from November to January. This cooling occurs episodically on an intra-seasonal time scale with a typical periodicity of 8–15 days and is stronger when the surface winds intensify, surface net heat losses are larger and the near-surface circulation is more pronounced. The cooling episodes varied in number, intensity, duration and spatial extent in each winter during 1998–2006. The cooler surface waters from this MCP flow initially southwestward and are then topographically steered northwestward by the Maldives Island Chain. The resultant near-surface circulation also appears to strengthen the amplitude of the near-surface thermal inversions observed in the SouthEastern Arabian Sea (SEAS).  相似文献

In the present paper, the parameters affecting the uncertainties on the estimation of M max have been investigated by exploring different methodologies being used in the analysis of seismicity catalogue and estimation of seismicity parameters. A critical issue to be addressed before any scientific analysis is to assess the quality, consistency, and homogeneity of the data. The empirical relationships between different magnitude scales have been used for conversions for homogenization of seismicity catalogues to be used for further seismic hazard assessment studies. An endeavour has been made to quantify the uncertainties due to magnitude conversions and the seismic hazard parameters are then estimated using different methods to consider the epistemic uncertainty in the process. The study area chosen is around Delhi. The b value and the magnitude of completeness for the four seismogenic sources considered around Delhi varied more than 40% using the three catalogues compiled based on different magnitude conversion relationships. The effect of the uncertainties has been then shown on the estimation of M max and the probabilities of occurrence of different magnitudes. It has been emphasized to consider the uncertainties and their quantification to carry out seismic hazard assessment and in turn the seismic microzonation.  相似文献

Consideration of soil moisture in terms of percentage of field capacity of the soils for the minimization of textural dependence of microwave emission of soils has been studied by several investigators using experimental data (air borne, field and laboratory experiments) and also theoretical procedures. Their conslusions seem to be not in agreement with each other, thus giving way for further investigations into the problem. To derive information on the choice of parameter through which the textural dependence of microwave emission can be minimized, three test sites have been selected with different soil textures and emission characteristics of these soils are calculated using theoretical approaches. The results of the analysis indicate that the minimal textural dependence is seen on microwave emission when the soil moisture is expressed in terms of volumetric moisture content (mv) reduced by the amount of transition moisture (Wt).  相似文献
