Facets of the geography of population in the Midwest

"This paper explores four selected facets of the geography of population in the [U.S.] Midwest that are related to the movement of people: (1) the spread of occupance across the land; (2) the growth of the population of counties once they had been occupied; (3) the distribution of the foreign-born population; and (4) the distribution of retired people who have migrated after they have retired."     

The solar O i λ 7773 triplet

Profiles of the O i 7773 triplet obtained at a spatial resolution 0.5 are analyzed using spectral line inversion techniques. Inferences are made about departures from LTE, convective velocity fields, and solar temperature fluctuations.     

The frequency of binaries with a degenerate component

The frequency of binaries with degenerate secondary components was evaluated according to the spectral types of the primaries. It appears that this proportion is 25% for binaries with giant primary components, and less than about 17% for dwarfs.Communication presented at the International Conference on Astrometric Binaries, held on 13–15 June, 1984, at the Remeis-Sternwarte Bamberg, Germany, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784–1846).     

On the existence of cosmological evolutionary effects

Parameters of the distant galaxy clusters of 3C295 (z=0.46) and Cl 0024+1654 (z=0.39) are compared with the predictions made using galaxies of the local clusters Coma (z=0.023) and DC 0329–52 (z=0.057) taking theK-effect into account. The distributions of colour and morphological type, and the amplitudesF ⁺/F^– of the ₀ 4000 discontinuity are examined and no evidence for evolution of the galaxies and the clusters can be seen.     

Analysis of a white-light flare spectrum

The continuum emission of an X₁ flare on 26 March, 1970 observed close to the solar limb (N 05 E 64) was analyzed by a photometric determination of the contrast I()/I ₀() in the wavelength range 3558–5920 Å. Two possible mechanisms for the emission were investigated, namely hydrogen Paschen and H^– continua. We show the unlikeness of the Paschen possibility and derive strong constraints on the temperature structure and energy deposition mechanism imposed by the H^– continuum process.We conclude that the emission must have originated in deep atmospheric layers. The relevance of this result with respect to flare energy release and transport processes is also discussed.     

Prominence hydrogen lines at 10–20 microns

An analysis of prominence hydrogen lines is presented in the spectral band 10–20 . The results are consistent with earlier work.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contrast AST 84-18716 with the National Science Foundation.     

Population development in Greater Santiago between 1970 and 1982: an analysis of district census results

"An attempt is made in the light of an analysis of population changes occurring in several sub-districts of Greater Santiago in the period between the last population censuses of 1970 and 1982, based on small-area census units (distritos and communas) to draw attention to the effects on the spatial growth of the city resulting from changed conditions in the political and juridical sphere since the change of power in 1973." The effect of changes in government policy concerning the liberalization of the property market and the illegal occupation of land are noted. (summary in ENG)     

Types of rural out-migration in Turkey

An analysis of changes in migration patterns since World War II between inner Anatolia and eastern Anatolia in Turkey is presented. Four periods are distinguished, the exploratory period until 1950, seasonal migration until 1960, mass migration up to the present, and marriage migration from 1975 to the present. The linkages between previous and potential migrants are noted. (SUMMARY IN ENG)     

Nonlinear wave conversion in electron-positron plasmas

Wave conversion mechanisms causing large-frequency shifts are considered for an electron-positron plasma in a strong magnetic field. In particular, we discuss the effects of the nonlinear erenkov as well as the cyclotron resonances in order to associate pulsar radio-emissions with our present model for nonlinear conversion of high-frequency radiation into the low-frequency region.     

Accuracy of close binary mass determinations from parallaxes

Absolute masses for W Ursae Majoris and Algol-type close binaries can be determined from their parallax, if observed, and the relative sizes of the stars and their mass ratio, obtained from a light curve solution. An error propagation study compares the typical order of magnitude of the various terms involved, and shows how accurate parallaxes have to be in order to make the procedure work, i.e., making the parallax term not larger than the combined non-parallax terms, and producing reasonably low mass errors.
