Growing demand for potable water for various needs has lead to indiscriminate exploitation of groundwater resources, particularly,
in the terrain where surface water resources are negligible. One such area is an island where groundwater is the only source
of fresh water. Groundwater is the prime source of fresh water on most of the atolls in the world. Groundwater on these islands
is in the form of thin fragile floating lens and is often vulnerable to overexploitation, draught, tidal waves, tsunami and
cyclone resulting in seawater ingress. Sustainable development of this meager source of fresh groundwater for a longer time
becomes a more difficult task on small atolls with a large population depending on this vital resource. To develop a sustainable
management scheme and identify the vulnerable part of aquifer, characterization of the aquifer system on islands is imperative.
Groundwater on an atoll is extremely vulnerable to seawater mixing through natural as well as human activities. One such natural
process is the tides of the ocean. The response of sea tide to the water table on the island offers valuable data as well
as cost-effective means to characterize an aquifer system. Such characterization is vital for the management of groundwater
resources on an atoll. The obtained results have compared well with the parameters obtained through a conventional pumping
test. Therefore, the use of tidal response to the water table, which can easily be recorded, provides a rapid and cost-effective

Residues of DDT isomers accumulated in the testes of Channa punctatus (BLOCH) were quantitatively estimated by exposing the fish to 2.5 ppm sublethal concentration for 32 days. The study revealed a high accumulation of DDT residues in the testes. The maximum concentration of residues was noted on the 32nd day of the experiment. The DDT isomer accumulated in maximum concentrations was followed by DDE and DDD isomers. The maximum residue concentrations were 0.3221 ppm (DDT), 0.1119 ppm (DDE) and 0.0695 ppm (DDD) on the 32nd day of the experiment. This paper investigates various multiseam mining related parameters using mine site specific data and numerical simulations. Two important mining effects—subsidence and stress—are analysed for different possible mining layouts. A geological mine dataset has been used to generate a numerical model. The predicted surface subsidence magnitude and surface profile have been compared under different scenarios to assess potential options in multiseam mining strategies. The effects that seam separation distances, mining offset, panel layout and panel orientation each have on surface subsidence and chain pillar stress magnitude have been investigated. The numerical simulation shows that ascending or descending mining directions have little impact on controlling the surface subsidence in multiseam mining and predicted an almost identical maximum stress development at the chain pillars. Numerical simulations infer that the orientation of the top panels control the subsidence profile. 相似文献

Remotely-sensed satellite data of Landsat 5 (TM) and IRS-1A (LISS II) covering parts of central portion of Chotanagapur plateau have been analysed visually to delineate some prominent lineaments in Ranchi district and its adjoining area. One of the most prominent lineament “Ranchi mega lineament? has been analysed in this paper. This lineament is a potential site for base metal mineralisation at some places, and it acts as good groundwater conduit in the region. No earlier attempt to map this entire structural unit as a separate entity is known. Geophysical bouguer gravity anomaly map, lithological and structural maps have some remarkable correlation with this lineament. In the present paper authors have tried to analyse the lineament with respect to its tectonic, mineralisation and groundwater prospects. Resistivity survey carried in close proximity of this lineament at selected sites, indicate that rocks are well fractured at depth. Available lithological and structural map support this lineament as a shear near Purulia (W.B.) and also having base-metal mineralisation potential in this area. Authors opine that existing gravity anomaly map may be further augmented in the light of present study. 相似文献
