Coal mine rejects and sulfide bearing coals are prone to acid mine drainage (AMD) formation due to aqueous weathering. These acidic effluents contain dissolved trace and potentially harmful elements (PHEs) that have considerable impact on the environment. The behavior of these elements in AMD is mainly controlled by pH. The focus of the present study is to investigate aqueous leaching of mine rejects for prediction of acid producing potential, rates of weathering, and release of PHEs in mine drainage. Mine reject (MR) and coal samples from the active mine sites of Meghalaya, India typically have high S contents (1.8–5.7% in MR and 1.7–4.7% in coals) with 75–90% of the S in organic form and enrichment of most of the PHEs in rejects. Aqueous kinetic leaching experiments on mine rejects showed high acid producing potential and release of trace and potentially harmful elements. The elements (Sb, As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, V and Zn) in mine sample leachates are compared with those in mine waters. The concentrations of Al, Si, P, K, Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb are found to increase with leaching time and are negatively correlated with pH of the solution. The processes controlling the release of these elements are acid leaching, precipitation and adsorption. The critical loads of PHEs in water affected by AMD are calculated by comparing their concentrations with those of regulatory levels. The Enrichment Factors (EFs) and soil pollution indices (SPIs) for the elements have shown that PHEs from coal and mine reject samples are mobilized into the nearby environment and are enriched in the associated soil and sediment.  相似文献

The study deals with stream response to sustained tectonic during the Cenozoic and development of two parallel scarps in the western Kachchh. The study encompasses fluvial networks developed over the Jara and Jumara domes, which are a part of the laterally extensive belt of flexures bounded by the Kachchh Mainland Fault(KMF) to their north and called as Northern Hill Range(NHR). Parameters such as longitudinal profile, Hack profile, stream length gradient index(SL), hypsometric curve, hypsometric integral(HI), valley floor width to height ratio(Vf), elongation ratio(Re) and escarpment sinuosity(ES) were analysed. Hack profiles of the major rivers draining through the area show similar convex up nature suggesting primary influence of the tectonics in controlling and shaping the landscape of the region. Elongation ratio 6 and undergone higher degree of fluvial erosion indicated by the low values of hypsometric integral suggest the tendency of river systems to increase the basin area longitudinally rather than laterally. The study suggests that higher net uplift in the eastern half(Jumara dome) caused the rivers to overcome the structural control and to carve out generally straight north oriented channels. The rivers of western part(Jara dome) show more prominent structural control of cuesta girdles formed in compact lithologies and attributed to the domal structure. The ~10 km long Jaramara scarp believed to the remnant of older KMF scarp, is a product of headward erosion of the fluvial channels through different hard and soft litho-units of the area. The similar orientation of Jaramara scarp and morphology of the Ukra intrusive body suggests that the Ukra intrusive played a significant role in controlling the formation and morphology of the Jaramara scarp.  相似文献

We have investigated two stiff-fluid models in which the material distribution is that of viscous fluid. In the first model, the coefficient of shear viscosity is assumed to be constant while in the second model the coefficient of shear viscosity is proportional to the rate of expansion in the model. The paper also discusses some physical and geometrical aspects of the model. The behaviour of the model in absence of viscosity is also discussed.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important components of the interstellar medium and carbonaceous chondrites, but have never been identified in the reducing atmospheres of the outer solar system. Incompletely characterized complex organic solids (tholins) produced by irradiating simulated Titan atmospheres reproduce well the observed UV/visible/IR optical constants of the Titan stratospheric haze. Titan tholin and a tholin generated in a crude simulation of the atmosphere of Jupiter are examined by two-step laser desorption/multiphoton ionization mass spectrometry. A range of two- to four-ring PAHs, some with one to four alkylation sites are identified, with net abundance approximately 10(-4) g g-1 (grams per gram) of tholins produced. Synchronous fluorescence techniques confirm this detection. Titan tholins have proportionately more one- and two-ring PAHs than do Jupiter tholins, which in turn have more four-ring and larger PAHs. The four-ringed PAH chrysene, prominent in some discussions of interstellar grains, is found in Jupiter tholins. Solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy suggests approximately equal to 25% of the total C in both tholins is tied up in aromatic and/or aliphatic alkenes. IR spectra indicate an upper limit in both tholins of approximately equal to 6% by mass in benzenes, heterocyclics, and PAHs with more than four rings. Condensed PAHs may contribute at most approximately 10% to the observed detached limb haze layers on Titan. As with interstellar PAHs, the synthesis route of planetary PAHs is likely to be via acetylene addition reactions.  相似文献

A dark reddish-brown high-molecular-weight polymer is produced by long wavelength ultraviolet irradiation of abundant gases in reducing planetary atmospheres. The polymer i examined by paper chromatography, mass spectrometry, and infrared, visible, and ultraviolet spectroscopy. High carbon-number straight-chain alkanes with NH2 and, probably, OH and CO groups are identified, along with the previously reported amino acids. There are chemical similarities between this polymer and organic compounds recovered from carbonaceous chondrites and precambrian sediments. The visible and near-ultraviolet transmission spectrum of the polymer shows its absorption optical depth to be redder than λ?2 and perhaps similar in coloration to the clouds of Jupiter, Saturn, and Titan. The near-ultraviolet absorption coefficient is ~103 cm?1, and typical grain sizes ~30 μm. The nitrile content is small, and the polymer should be semitransparent in the 5 μm atmospheric window. Such polymers may be a common constituent of clouds in the outer solar system and on the early Earth.  相似文献

Most of the existing methods of strain analysis can estimate strain in a single form of distorted brachiopod, or trilobite provided independent evidence, such as the association of the fossil with cleavage and/or stretching lineation is available for inferring the direction of maximum principal strain. This article proposes a simple computer graphics based method and its MATLAB code that determine the minimum amount of strain in a single distorted fossil form even if data for inferring the maximum principal strain direction are lacking. Our method is a rapid computer-graphics alternative to some of the existing analytical methods. In a distorted fossil form of original bilateral symmetry, the relative senses of angular shears along the hinge line and the median line are mutually opposite to each other. It follows, therefore, that the maximum principal strain direction lies within the acute angle between the hinge and the median lines in the plane of the fossil. Using this principle, our method performs several simulations such that each simulation retrodeforms the distorted fossil by assuming a particular orientation, lying within the acute angle between the hinge line and the median line, as the potential direction of the maximum principal strain. Each simulation of retrodeformation yields a potential strain ratio. The distribution of all the potential strain ratios, obtained by assuming different orientations as the potential directions of the maximum strain, is typically a parabola-like curve with a distinct vertex that corresponds to the minimum amount of strain in the distorted fossil. An entirely computer graphical approach is somewhat time-intensive because it involves a large number of retrodeformational simulations. We, therefore, give a MATLAB code, namely, the Minstrain, that rapidly retrodeforms the fossil and determines the minimum strain with precision.  相似文献

We present chemical abundance measurements from high-resolution observations of seven subdamped Lyα (sub-DLA) absorbers and one DLA system at   z < 1.5  . Three of these objects have high metallicity, with near or supersolar Zn abundance. Grids of cloudy models for each system were constructed to look for possible ionization effects in these systems. For the systems in which we could constrain the ionization parameter, we find that the ionization corrections as predicted by the cloudy models are generally small and within the typical error bars (∼0.15 dex), in general agreement with previous studies. The Al  iii to Al  ii ratio for these and other absorbers from the literature are compared, and we find that while the sub-DLAs have a larger scatter in the Al  iii to Al  ii ratios than the DLAs, there appears to be little correlation between the ratio and   N H  i   . The relationship between the metallicity and the velocity width of the profile for these systems is investigated. We show that the sub-DLAs that have been observed to date follow a similar trend as DLA absorbers, with the more metal rich systems exhibiting large velocity widths. We also find that the systems at the upper edge of this relationship with high metallicities and large velocity widths are more likely to be sub-DLAs than DLA absorbers, perhaps implying that the sub-DLA absorbers are more representative of massive galaxies.  相似文献

To prevent the loss of biodiversity in northern Central America, which is one of 34 global biodiversity hotspots, the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor, a network of protected parks and reserves has been proposed. While on-going deforestation to croplands and pastures outside the protected regions is likely to effect the dry season precipitation over the regenerated and extant forests in the proposed protected regions, global climate change driven precipitation changes may also be a significant factor, at least at some locations. This study compares the effects of land cover change to the effects of elevated greenhouse gas concentrations on precipitation in the proposed areas of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor network. Using 5 consecutive dry season simulations of the effects of land cover change that included dry, wet and normal years, and using statistically downscaled global climate model (GCM) precipitation from the fourth assessment report (AR4), a larger expanse of the proposed protected regions was found more sensitive to precipitation decreases due to land cover changes. Two specific protected regions however stand out: the Maya Highlands and some areas of the Maya lowlands that were more sensitive to global climate change driven precipitation decreases. In these protected regions it is likely that irrespective of local policies the climate change signal would dominate.  相似文献
