A study of the thermomagnetic curves of synthetic titanomagnetite powders, heated in air, in non-saturation applied magnetic fields showed that the shape of the curves was related to the magnitude of the applied field, the coercivity of the samples, and the effects of oxidation. The most important result to emerge from this study was the occurrence of reproducible peaks at low temperatures (~100–200°C). The temperature at which the peaks occur was found to increase with increasing coercive force or decreasing applied field. It is suggested that the peaks are the result of the “unblocking” of the magnetization, and should not be confused with thermomagnetic characteristics used to classify ferrites. The “unblocking” temperature is dependent on both the coercive force and the applied magnetic field, as is predicted by most models of thermo-remanent magnetization. 相似文献

From September 1994 through October 1995 aboveground and belowground production ofSarcocornia fruticosa andPhragmites australis was studied at two sites in the Po Delta. In 1995, aboveground production forS. fruticosa in an intertidal site was 678 g dw m−2 yr−1 with a peak live biomass of 1,008 g m−2; belowground production was 1,260 g m−2 with a peak live biomass of 3,735 g m−2. A litter bag decomposition study showed that after 69 wk there were 3.7%, 64.3%, and 66.6% of the original mass of leafy stems, woody stems, and roots, respectively. In a reed bed, which experiences brackish conditions,P. australis aboveground production was 876 g m−2 with a peak live biomass of 780 g m−2; belowground production was 2,263 g m−2 with a peak live biomass of 4,087 g m−2. After 65 wk, there was 45.4%, 50.4%, and 29.3%, respectively, of leaves, stems, and rhizomes remaining of the initial biomass. At both sites, regular submersion by salt water probably leads to lower aboveground biomass and higher belowground biomass than reported for other Mediterranean coastal sites. Large (60 kg, minus 2 mm) sediment samples collected from a 5-km reach of a mature highland stream were used to investigate the effects of bar morphology and channel slope on the downstream dispersion of Au. Results are compared with those for an abundant heavy mineral (magnetite) and are discussed in terms of differential entrapment of light and heavy minerals by gravels and differences in supply of magnetite and Au to the study reach. Gold is selectively trapped in gravels; therefore, highest Au concentrations, a long dispersion train and lowest between-sampling-location variability were obtained with heavy-mineral concentrates of the minus 105+74 μm fraction from sandy gravels. In contrast, sands in bar-tail eddy pools gave the least reliable Au concentrations, due to random (Poisson) sampling errors and local post-depositional winnowing, and show rapid downstream anomaly decay. 相似文献

Detailed slope surveys were made in seven karst depressions in central Belize. Four major slope types were identified—inclined bedrock slopes, staircases, broken cliffs, and talus slopes. Depression bases are dominated by inclined bedrock and talus slopes, midslopes largely by broken cliffs, and near hill summits by staircases. Erosional weight loss tablets deployed in 1975–1981 and 1980–1985 show significant variations between the different slope types, with a maximum near depression bases. Throughfall measurements in 1980 and 1985 show that midslope and near-summit sites receive 10–20 per cent less water than do depression bases. Surface runoff, monitored using coloured dyes, is of limited distance and duration but still contributes to surface corrosion and morphology. Vadose seepage, monitored by tracing water from the surface to a small, shallow cave, is rapid, and subsurface corrosion exceeds that at the surface. Overall, near-surface form and process are consistent with hydrological models of depression development (Williams, 1983, 1985) and surface processes contribute significantly to overall depression form. Moreover, surface activity complements that in the subcutaneous zone by directing recharge into the epikarstic aquifer. 相似文献

The carbon dynamics of six estuarine ponds at Morehead City, North Carolina, were measured from August 1969 through August 1970. Three waste ponds received secondary treated sewage effluent and three served as controls. Total organic levels were determined by combustion with a Beckman total carbon analyzer. Inorganic levels were calculated from temperature, pH, and carbonate alkalinity. Carbon dioxide diffusion across the air-water interface was measured with a floating plastic dome and an infrared gas analyzer. Carbon metabolism was determined from diurnal changes in total inorganic carbon. From October through April the wastereceiving ponds were characterized by an intense bloom of a small alga,Monodus guttula. During the bloom organic levels reached 75 mg C per 1. The warmer months were characterized by a more diverse flora and organic concentrations averaging 25 mg per 1. Organic levels in the control ponds seldom were greater than 10 mg per 1. CO2 diffused constantly out of the control ponds due to input of high alkalinity water supersaturated with inorganic carbon. During the bloom in the waste ponds diffusion of CO2 from the atmosphere was as high as 0.5 g C per m2 per day. CO2 diffused into the water constantly because the high uptake rate of inorganic carbon by the small algae reduced the levels in the water to less than 5 mg per 1. Gross production of the waste receiving ponds avearaged 2,86 g C per m2 per day during the bloom and 2.44 during the non-bloom period. The average productivity of the control ponds was 1.7. Corrections for CO2 diffusion were significant in the control ponds and in the waste ponds during theMonodus bloom. Availability of carbon from diffusion and respiratory regeneration seemed to limit phytoplankton productivity during the bloom. The annual budgets for the two sets of ponds were distinctly different. For the control ponds, the input of organic matter was nearly equal to losses indicating almost no net production of organic material. A high net loss of organic material and a net gain of inorganic carbon for the waste ponds reflected the net productive nature. 相似文献

Magnesium silicates and gels were synthesized from aqueous solution. A range of products with the Mg/Si ratio ranging from 2:1 to 1:1 was produced. Their composition and crystallinity were found to vary with the time scale available for formation. In many coastal regions throughout the world, there is increasing pressure to harden shorelines to protect human infrastructures against sea level rise, storm surge, and erosion. This study examines waterbird community integrity in relation to shoreline hardening and land use characteristics at three geospatial scales: (1) the shoreline scale characterized by seven shoreline types: bulkhead, riprap, developed, natural marsh, Phragmites-dominated marsh, sandy beach, and forest; (2) the local subestuary landscape scale including land up to 500 m inland of the shoreline; and (3) the watershed scale >500 m from the shoreline. From 2010 to 2014, we conducted waterbird surveys along the shoreline and open water within 21 subestuaries throughout the Chesapeake Bay during two seasons to encompass post-breeding shorebirds and colonial waterbirds in late summer and migrating and wintering waterfowl in late fall. We employed an Index of Waterbird Community Integrity (IWCI) derived from mean abundance of individual waterbird species and scores of six key species attributes describing each species’ sensitivity to human disturbance, and then used this index to characterize communities in each subestuary and season. IWCI scores ranged from 14.3 to 19.7. Multivariate regression model selection showed that the local shoreline scale had the strongest influence on IWCI scores. At this scale, percent coverage of bulkhead and Phragmites along shorelines were the strongest predictors of IWCI, both with negative relationships. Recursive partitioning revealed that when subestuary shoreline coverage exceeded thresholds of approximately 5% Phragmites or 8% bulkhead, IWCI scores decreased. Our results indicate that development at the shoreline scale has an important effect on waterbird community integrity, and that shoreline hardening and invasive Phragmites each have a negative effect on waterbirds using subestuarine systems. 相似文献

The boron isotopic ratio of 11B/10B (δ11BSRM951) and trace element composition of marine carbonates are key proxies for understanding carbon cycling (pH) and palaeoceanographic change. However, method validation and comparability of results between laboratories requires carbonate reference materials. Here, we report results of an inter‐laboratory comparison study to both assign δ11BSRM951 and trace element compositions to new synthetic marine carbonate reference materials (RMs), NIST RM 8301 (Coral) and NIST RM 8301 (Foram) and to assess the variance of data among laboratories. Non‐certified reference values and expanded 95% uncertainties for δ11BSRM951 in NIST RM 8301 (Coral) (+24.17‰ ± 0.18‰) and NIST RM 8301 (Foram) (+14.51‰ ± 0.17‰) solutions were assigned by consensus approach using inter‐laboratory data. Differences reported among laboratories were considerably smaller than some previous inter‐laboratory comparisons, yet discrepancies could still lead to large differences in calculated seawater pH. Similarly, variability in reported trace element information among laboratories (e.g., Mg/Ca ± 5% RSD) was often greater than within a single laboratory (e.g., Mg/Ca < 2%). Such differences potentially alter proxy‐reconstructed seawater temperature by more than 2 °C. These now well‐characterised solutions are useful reference materials to help the palaeoceanographic community build a comprehensive view of past ocean changes. 相似文献
