Summary. Synthetic seismograms based upon first-order perturbation theory are analysed to test the validity of assumptions which form the basis of current velocity inversion procedures. It is found that the lowest order geometrical optics approximation, namely that measured normal mode eigen-frequencies reflect the average structure underlying the source–receiver great circle path, becomes less valid near nodes in the source radiation pattern and near the surface wave foci at the source and its antipode. These failures are a consequence of singlet interference within an isolated normal mode multiplet. The technique of determing frequency by fitting a single resonance peak to a multiplet yields results which agree well with the first-order theory for slow and fast paths where excitation is dominated by one pair of singlets but on intermediate paths where singlet interference is more of a problem, agreement is not as good. Inversion of small data sets is particularly sensitive to frequency fluctuations near radiation nodes, while larger sets are influenced more by antipodal deviations from geometrical optics. The latter leads to inversions which fail to recover the short wavelength structure of the starting model. Basing inversions directly upon first-order theory shows promise of improving recovery of short wavelengths. 相似文献

This paper reports from investigations on the robustness of estimated rates of intraplate motion from the continuous GPS project BIFROST (Baseline Inferences from Fennoscandian Rebound Observations, Sealevel and Tectonics). We study loading effects due to ocean, atmosphere and hydrology and their impact on estimated rate parameters. We regularly find the admittance of a modelled perturbation at less than fifty percent of the full effect. We think that the finding relates to a difficult noise situation at all periods, and that a satisfying model for the dominating noise source has not been found yet. An additional reason for low admittance is found in the mapping process of the no-fiducial network solution into a conventional reference frame. 相似文献

Coastal wetlands, among the most productive ecosystems, are important global reservoirs of carbon (C). Accelerated sea level rise (SLR) and saltwater intrusion in coastal wetlands increase salinity and inundation depth, causing uncertain effects on plant and soil processes that drive C storage. We exposed peat-soil monoliths with sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) plants from a brackish marsh to continuous treatments of salinity (elevated (~?20 ppt) vs. ambient (~?10 ppt)) and inundation levels (submerged (water above soil surface) vs. exposed (water level 4 cm below soil surface)) for 18 months. We quantified changes in soil biogeochemistry, plant productivity, and whole-ecosystem C flux (gross ecosystem productivity, GEP; ecosystem respiration, ER). Elevated salinity had no effect on soil CO2 and CH4 efflux, but it reduced ER and GEP by 42 and 72%, respectively. Control monoliths exposed to ambient salinity had greater net ecosystem productivity (NEP), storing up to nine times more C than plants and soils exposed to elevated salinity. Submersion suppressed soil CO2 efflux but had no effect on NEP. Decreased plant productivity and soil organic C inputs with saltwater intrusion are likely mechanisms of net declines in soil C storage, which may affect the ability of coastal peat marshes to adapt to rising seas. 相似文献

Oxygen, magnesium, and silicon isotopic abundances in Vigarano 1623-5 were studied using secondary ion mass spectrometry to investigate correlations between isotopic and petrologic properties of this unique forsterite-bearing FUN inclusion. Vigarano 1623-5 displays large, correlated mass-dependent fractionation effects, tightly linked to mineralogy within distinct petrologic units of the inclusion. The pyroxene-rich and melilite-rich interior parts of the inclusion display highly mass-fractionated isotopic compositions of oxygen, magnesium, and silicon, consistent with Rayleigh distillation during evaporation of a melt with initial oxygen composition close to a solar composition. However, the chemical composition, enriched in magnesium and silicon, suggests a precursor already fractionated by prior melt evaporation. A discontinuous igneous rim was produced by a flash-melting event followed by isotopic exchange in the rim melilite with planetary-like oxygen, mechanical fragmentation, and reassembly with an accretionary rim of heterogeneous materials. Al-rich minerals in 1623-5 show evidence for having crystallized with live 26Al but at less than the “canonical” level of most CV calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions. The archetypical komatiite-hosted Alexo Ni–Cu–(PGE) deposit occurs in the 2,720–2,710-Ma Kidd-Munro Assemblage of the western Abitibi greenstone belt in Dundonald Township, Ontario. Detailed mapping of a 200-m long glacially polished outcrop provides unequivocal evidence that the host komatiite flow thermomechanically eroded footwall andesites: (1) the contact between komatiite and andesite is very sharp but delicately scalloped, marked by a <1-cm-thick selvedge of black aphanitic komatiite and clearly transgresses pillow structures and interpillow breccias in the andesite without any evidence of a regolith, shearing, or folding, producing multiple nested embayments on scales from hundreds of meters to a few centimeters; (2) the andesites have been contact metamorphosed and altered along the entire length of the outcrop and the degree of metamorphism/alteration is thicker and more intense around embayments; (3) xenoliths of andesite in komatiite are more common within embayments; (4) komatiitic dikes penetrate downward into underlying andesites, primarily along the lateral margins of embayments; and (5) many of the dikes and marginal rocks exhibit geochemical evidence of contamination. This physical and geochemical evidence for thermomechanical erosion, combined with S isotopic evidence for a major component of non-magmatic country-rock S in the ores, provides additional support for the roles of thermomechanical erosion and incorporation of country-rock S in the genesis of komatiite-associated Ni–Cu–(PGE) deposits. The detailed mapping also reveals that the stratigraphy of the ore zone is considerably more complex than previously reported, indicating that the sulfides were emplaced in several stages, confirming the dynamic nature of the ore emplacement process in komatiite-associated Ni–Cu–(PGE) deposits. 相似文献
