To understand the evolution of a disaster, we propose a Framework for Assessing Crisis in a System Environment (FACSE). FACSE is set in a multi-system environment, containing the human system as well as the various natural and technological systems that interact with people. We take a lifecycle perspective, via which we quantify rhythms of life exhibited in multiple systems, across different scales, at different times. The lifecycle perspective also implies a relative approach in that rhythms of life during time t can be compared against those during t-1. We illustrate how rhythms of life in the human system can be measured at different scales. We propose a new concept??the degree of disaster, which is a composite score that encompasses the various measurements of rhythms of life from multiple systems, across different scales. Belize experiences the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in Central America, ranging between 2.1 and 3.2% (World Health Organization 2008). To add to the limited literature on HIV/AIDS Stigma and Discrimination (HASD) in Belize, the authors conducted a study to assess whether stigma and discrimination is related to geography and ethnicity. One-hundred forty participants were interviewed using a structured survey instrument at three different parts of the country, and the results were analyzed quantitatively. These places were Cayo District on the western border with Guatemala, Belize City, and two cayes (Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye). Respondents in Belize City generally held the lowest rates of stigmatizing and discriminatory attitudes towards individuals living with HIV/AIDS, highlighting a possible relationship between geography and ethnicity. Concurrently, self-identifying Afro-Belizeans and Creoles reported lower rates of HASD attitudes in some contexts than other ethnic groups. The results show that there may a relation between geography, ethnicity, and HASD, and that a randomized, controlled study is an important next step in determining the strength of that relation. 相似文献

We present the observations of Io acquired by the Solid State Imaging (SSI) experiment during the Galileo Millennium Mission (GMM) and the strategy we used to plan the exploration of Io. Despite Galileo's tight restrictions on data volume and downlink capability and several spacecraft and camera anomalies due to the intense radiation close to Jupiter, there were many successful SSI observations during GMM. Four giant, high-latitude plumes, including the largest plume ever observed on Io, were documented over a period of eight months; only faint evidence of such plumes had been seen since the Voyager 2 encounter, despite monitoring by Galileo during the previous five years. Moreover, the source of one of the plumes was Tvashtar Catena, demonstrating that a single site can exhibit remarkably diverse eruption styles—from a curtain of lava fountains, to extensive surface flows, and finally a ∼400 km high plume—over a relatively short period of time (∼13 months between orbits I25 and G29). Despite this substantial activity, no evidence of any truly new volcanic center was seen during the six years of Galileo observations. The recent observations also revealed details of mass wasting processes acting on Io. Slumping and landsliding dominate and occur in close proximity to each other, demonstrating spatial variation in material properties over distances of several kilometers. However, despite the ubiquitous evidence for mass wasting, the rate of volcanic resurfacing seems to dominate; the floors of paterae in proximity to mountains are generally free of debris. Finally, the highest resolution observations obtained during Galileo's final encounters with Io provided further evidence for a wide diversity of surface processes at work on Io. 相似文献

We investigated how climate change could affect ambient ozone concentrations and the subsequent human health impacts. Hourly
concentrations were estimated for 50 eastern US cities for five representative summers each in the 1990s and 2050s, reflecting
current and projected future climates, respectively. Estimates of future concentrations were based on the IPCC A2 scenario
using global climate, regional climate, and regional air quality models. This work does not explore the effects of future
changes in anthropogenic emissions, but isolates the impact of altered climate on ozone and health. The cities’ ozone levels
are estimated to increase under predicted future climatic conditions, with the largest increases in cities with present-day
high pollution. On average across the 50 cities, the summertime daily 1-h maximum increased 4.8 ppb, with the largest increase
at 9.6 ppb. The average number of days/summer exceeding the 8-h regulatory standard increased 68%. Elevated ozone levels correspond
to approximately a 0.11% to 0.27% increase in daily total mortality. While actual future ozone concentrations depend on climate
and other influences such as changes in emissions of anthropogenic precursors, the results presented here indicate that with
other factors constant, climate change could detrimentally affect air quality and thereby harm human health. 相似文献

The organic composition of produced water samples from coalbed natural gas (CBNG) wells in the Powder River Basin, WY, sampled in 2001 and 2002 are reported as part of a larger study of the potential health and environmental effects of organic compounds derived from coal. The quality of CBNG produced waters is a potential environmental concern and disposal problem for CBNG producers, and no previous studies of organic compounds in CBNG produced water have been published. Organic compounds identified in the produced water samples included: phenols, biphenyls, N-, O-, and S-containing heterocyclic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aromatic amines, various non-aromatic compounds, and phthalates. Many of the identified organic compounds (phenols, heterocyclic compounds, PAHs) are probably coal-derived. PAHs represented the group of organic compounds most commonly observed. Concentrations of total PAHs ranged up to 23 μg/L. Concentrations of individual compounds ranged from about 18 to <0.01 μg/L. Temporal variability of organic compound concentrations was documented, as two wells with relatively high organic compound contents in produced water in 2001 had much lower concentrations in 2002. 相似文献

A refinement and extrapolation of recent motion estimates for the Danakil microplate, based on ancient kinematic indicators in the Afar region, describes the evolution of a microplate in the continental realm. The Danakil horst is an elevated part of this microplate, exposing a Precambrian basement within the Afar depression, the site of the Nubia-Somalia-Arabia triple junction. We compare evidence for strike- or oblique-slip faults in data from the Afar depression and southern Red Sea to small circles about published poles of rotation for the Danakil microplate with respect to Nubia. A reconstruction about the preferred pole reunites lengths of a Precambrian shear zone on the Nubia and Danakil sides and preserves a uniform basement fabric strike through Nubia, Danakil and Yemen. Since at least magnetic chron C5 (∼11 Ma) Danakil rotated about a different pole with respect to Nubia than either Somalia or Arabia, but between chrons C5 and C2A Nubia-Danakil motion was a close approximation to Nubia-Somalia motion. Since C2A relative motions of the Danakil microplate have been independent of movements on any of the neighbouring plate boundaries. We relate this to the onset of oceanic-type accretion within Afar. The resulting eastwards acceleration of Danakil was accommodated by westwards propagation of the Gulf of Aden rift that became the new, discrete, plate boundary between the Danakil microplate and the Somalia plate. Present-day activity suggests that the Red Sea and Aden rifts will link through Afar, thereby isolating the Danakil horst as a microcontinent on the Arabian margin. 相似文献
