We modeled equilibrium vaporization of chondritic and achondritic materials using the MAGMA code. We calculated both instantaneous and integrated element abundances of Na, Mg, Ca, Al, Fe, Si, Ti, and K in chondritic and achondritic meteors. Our results are qualitatively consistent with observations of meteor spectra.  相似文献

A coordinate system is defined on the phase space of a perturbed Keplerian system after the mean anomaly has been averaged out, for the purpose of explaining how eliminating the longitude of the ascending node reduces the orbital space to a two-dimensional sphere in case the system admits an axial symmetry. Concomitantly, on the submanifold of direct osculating ellipses, the CDM variables are replaced by functions which form the basis of a Poisson algebra isomorphic to the Lie algebra so(3) of the rotation group SO(3); furthermore, in these variables, the doubly reduced phase flow appears like a rotation of the reduced phase space.  相似文献

A mathematically rigorous formalism is derived by which an arbitrary photometric function for the bidirectional reflectance of a smooth surface may be corrected to include effects of general macroscopic roughness. The correction involves only one arbitrary parameter, the mean slope angle θ, and is applicable to surfaces of any albedo. Using physically reasonable assumptions and mathematical approximations the correction expressions are evaluated analytically to second order in θ. The correction is applied to the bidirectional reflectance function of B. Hapke (1981, J. Geophys. Res.86, 3039–3054). Expressions for both the differential and integral brightnesses are obtained. Photometric profiles on hypothetical smooth and rough planets of low and high albedo are shown to illustrate the effects of macroscopic roughness. The theory is applied to observations of Mercury and predicts the integral phase function, the apparent polar darkening, and the lack of limb brightness surge on the planet. The roughness-corrected bidirectional reflectance function is sufficiently simple that it can be conveniently evaluated on a programmable hand-held calculator.  相似文献

The rapid dissipation of flare energy has been observed in the transition-zone line of C iv at 1548.2 Å using the University of Colorado spectrometer aboard OSO-8. Impulsive brightenings have been resolved with characteristic risetimes as low as 3.5 s. One event is analyzed in detail, in which it is inferred that the electron density is greater than 2 × 1011 cm–3 at T = 60 000 K, and that the flare energy is deposited at a rate of 2 ergs cm–3 s–1 or greater. The temporal behavior of the intensity at the center of the C iv line is consistent with a non-equilibrium ionization of C iii through C v. If this event is a result of the multiple tearing mode instability as the primary energy release mechanism, then the observations indicate a pre-flare magnetic field of about 175 G.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Ethical dilemmas involving issues of harm-benefit, privacy, deception, and sponsor relations are encountered frequently in geographical research. Geographers have not always been sensitive to ethical issues, nor have they always been able to reconcile their obligations to understanding and knowledge with those of respecting the dignity and integrity of research subjects. This paper reviews these fundamental ethical concerns. Four strategies for handling ethical difficulties are reviewed: individual self-regulation, disciplinary responses, institutional controls, and external controls. Mariner 9 images and all Viking orbiter images through July 1979 were searched for cloud forms. A computer-accessible catalog was assembled, consisting of a classification of cloud type (lee wav wave, for example) and properties (directionality, wavelength, for example). Lee wave directionality shows a pattern and seasonal variation at high latitudes which is consistent with predictions of theoretical modeling. Fog and haze occurrence shows no obvious correlation with water abundance or any other simple causal factor. Lee waves are rare at equatorial latitudes. Plumes (probably dust) occur preferentially at locations where strong boundary layer convection is expected.  相似文献

The behavior of water vapor in the Mars atmosphere requires that there be a seasonally accessible nonatmospheric reservoir of water. Coupled models have been constructed which include exchange of water with the regolith and with the polar caps, and transport through the atmosphere due to its circulation. Comparison of the model results with the vapor observations and with other data regarding the physical nature of the surface allows constraints to be placed on the relative importance of each process. The models are capable of satisfactorily explaining the gross features of the observed behavior using plausible values for the regolith and atmosphere mixing terms. In the region between the polar caps, the regolith contributes as much water to the seasonal cycle of vapor as does transport in from the more-poleward regions, to within a factor of 2. Globally, 10–40% of the seasonal cycle of vapor results from exchange of water with the regolith, about 40% results from the behavior of the residual caps, and the remainder is due to exchange of water with the seasonal caps. It is difficult to determine the relative importance of the processes more precisely than this because both regolith and polar cap exchange of water act to first order in the same direction, producing the largest vapor abundance during the local summer. The system is ultimately regulated on the seasonal time scale by the polar caps, as the time to reach equilibrium between the atmosphere and regolith or between the polar atmosphere and the global atmosphere is much longer than the time for the polar caps to equilibrate with the local atmosphere. This same behavior will hold for longer time scales, with the polar caps being in equilibrium with the insolation as it changes on the obliquity time scale, and the atmosphere and regolith following along.  相似文献

The equations governing the elastic-plastic deformation of granular materials are typically hyperbolic, or contain small-magnitude damping or rate effects. A finite element algorithm is the standard method for the numerical integration of these systems. In particular, finite elements allow great flexibility in the design of grid geometry. However, modern finite difference methods for hyperbolic systems have been successful in aerodynamics computations, resolving wave structures more sharply than finite element schemes. In this paper we develop a finite difference scheme for granular flow problems. We report on a second-order Godunov-type scheme for the integration of hyperbolic equations for the elastoplastic deformation of a simple model of granular flow. The Godunov method includes a characteristic tracing step in the integration, providing minimal wave dispersion, and a slope limiting step, preventing unphysical oscillations. The granular flow model we consider is hyperbolic, but hyperbolicity is lost at a large value of accumulated plastic strain. This loss of hyperbolicity is a tell-tale signal for the formation of a shear band within the sample. Typically, when systems lose hyperbolicity a regularization mechanism is added to the model equations in order to maintain the well posedness of the system. These regularizations include viscosity, viscoplasticity, higher-order gradient effects or stress coupling. Here we appeal to a very different kind of regularization. When the system loses hyperbolicity and a shear band forms, we treat the band as an internal boundary, and impose jump conditions at this boundary. Away from the band, the system remains hyperbolic and the integration step proceeds as usual.  相似文献
