An earth systems study of the Avon‐Heathcote Estuary (Ihutai), New Zealand, shows that tectonic activity has a marked direct and indirect control upon its geomorphology and human settlement in the area. We discuss the Late Holocene history of the embayment in relation to large earthquakes and their after‐effects. Of particular note is the rapid fluvial transfer of sand to the coast causing dune formation and a more delayed pulse of coarser sediment causing channel avulsion of the Waimakariri River. While dune system development seems to occur soon after tectonic activity, river channel avulsion, spit/barrier formation and ongoing geomorphological changes may well relate to periods of tectonic activity that occurred 100–200 years previously. The interaction between these two sediment delivery systems causes significant, and often rapid, changes to coastal geomorphology and ecosystems that have serious implications for human populations living at or near the coast. We show a more region‐wide picture of the direct and indirect effects of tectonic activity, by comparing two embayments that represent coastal points of entry at opposite ends of the Waimakariri River floodplain: the Avon‐Heathcote Estuary (Ihutai) and Lake Ellesmere (Waihora). The Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Camera was used to obtain global maps of the martian surface with equatorial resolution of 7.5 km/pixel in two wavelength ranges: blue (400-450 nm) and red (575-625 nm). The maps used were acquired between March 15, 1999 (Ls=110°) and July 31, 2001 (Ls=205°), corresponding to approximately one and a quarter martian years. Using the global maps, cloud area (in km2) has been measured daily for water ice clouds topographically corresponding to Olympus Mons, Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons, Arsia Mons, Alba Patera, the western Valles Marineris canyon system, and for other small surface features in the region. Seasonal trends in cloud activity have been established for the three Tharsis volcanoes, Olympus Mons, and Alba Patera. Olympus, Ascraeus, and Pavonis Mons show cloud activity from about Ls=0°-220° with a peak in cloud area near Ls=100°. One of our most interesting observational results is that Alba Patera shows a double peaked feature in the cloud area with peaks at Ls=60° and 140° and a minimum near Ls=100°. Arsia Mons shows nearly continuous cloud activity. The altitudes of several of these clouds have been determined from the locations of the visual cloud tops, and optical depths were measured for a number of them using the DISORT code of Stamnes et al. (1988, Appl. Opt. 27, 2502-2509). Several aspects of the observations (e.g., cloud heights, effects of increased dust on cloud activity) are similar to simulations in Richardson et al. (2002, J. Geophys. Res. 107, 5064). A search for short period variations in the cloud areas revealed only indirect evidence for the diurnal cloud variability in the afternoon hours; unambiguous evidence for other periodicities was not found. 相似文献

We present revised tremolite powder thermal decomposition kinetics using previous and newly acquired data from longer time (years instead of months) and lower temperature experiments (<1073 K). We also present kinetic results for decomposition of millimeter- to centimeter-sized tremolite grains. Natural tremolite samples were heated at ambient pressure in flowing CO2 or N2 gas from 1023-1238 K. The tremolite decomposition products are a physical mixture of two pyroxene solid solutions (with the bulk composition Dp59En41), a silica polymorph, and water vapor. Decomposition rates were calculated by using the mass loss of the heated samples. Tremolite crystals and crystalline powder decompositions follow different but related Avrami-Erofe'ev (nucleation and growth) kinetic models. The rate equations for thermal decomposition of tremolite crystalline powder and the larger crystal grains are log10kpowder (h−1)=18.69(±0.19)−23,845(±833)/T and log10kcrystal (h−1)=19.82(±0.07)−25,670(±916)/T. The associated apparent activation energies are 456(±16) kJ mol−1 and 491(±18) kJ mol−1, respectively. We propose a decomposition mechanism and suggest that decomposition and dehydroxylation occur simultaneously. The rate-limiting step is proposed to be structural rearrangement of the amphibole structure to the two pyroxenes and silica. This step and the overall decomposition rate are predicted to be independent of pressure from 1 to 100 bars. These kinetic analyses strengthen our previous conclusion (Johnson and Fegley, 2000, Icarus 146, 301-306) that if hydrous minerals, such as tremolite, formed on Venus during a wetter past, then these minerals could still exist at current conditions on Venus' surface today. 相似文献
