Chemical diffusion profiles in molten CaO---Al2O3---SiO2 have been measured over a large range of compositions at 1500°C and l GPa. The diffusion profiles have been inverted for effective binary diffusion coefficients (EBDCs) and for the chemical diffusion matrix. The EBDCs are shown to depend strongly on both composition and direction of diffusion in composition space. The dependence of EBDCs on direction in composition space, which for the system studied here can be as large as a factor of seven, severely limits the applicability of EBDCs to interdiffusion in any direction other than the one used to derive the EBDCs.

The chemical diffusion matrix for molten CaO---Al2O3---SiO2 was determined using diffusion profiles from two or three mutually orthogonal diffusion couples in the ternary composition space. All features of the diffusion profiles shown in this work can be reproduced by representing the chemical fluxes in the three-component system as a linear combination of concentration gradients via a 2 × 2 diffusion matrix. Chemical diffusion in molten CaO---Al2O3---SiO2 shows clear evidence of strong diffusive coupling among the components. This can be seen in the uphill diffusion profiles of components that were initially uniform, in the fact that the apparent rate of diffusion of some components is a strong function of direction in composition space, and most quantitatively in the magnitude of off-diagonal elements of the diffusion matrix relative to the magnitude of the diagonal elements. SiO2 for example, is found to be strongly coupled with CaO in relatively silicic melts, whereas Al2O3 is strongly coupled with CaO in less silicic melts. Furthermore, the coupling of CaO with either Al2O3 or Si02 reverses sign between more and less polymerized compositions. Interdiffusion profiles in natural melts have numerous features that suggest similar coupling between Al2O3 and CaO and between SiO2 and CaO.  相似文献

A series of kinetic experiments has been carried out to investigate the rates of dissolution (release of Al and Si) of common sandstone minerals in response to acidification of pore waters (pH = 3), using an experimental procedure designed to maximise the proportion of solid to fluid, and to minimise possible damage from agitation. The results have then been compared with those from experiments using disaggregated sandstones from two North Sea reservoirs. Experiments were carried out at 25 °C and 80 °C and in 0.01, 0.1 and 1 M NaCl solutions, with a pH of 3. Hydrochloric acid was used as the source of acidity and rate constants were determined based on both release of Al and Si. Mineral dissolution rates were closely comparable to literature values, despite the different experimental technique, except in the case of smectite where particle aggregation appears to have inhibited reaction. The dissolution rates calculated for reservoir sandstones based on their modal mineralogy and surface areas agree within a factor of 2 with the measured vales. Based on the reaction rates measured here, reservoir rocks rich in feldspar, illite and/or smectite are likely to react most rapidly with acidified pore waters.  相似文献

Power spectral analyses of soil moisture variability are carried out from scales of 100 m to 10 km on the microwave remotely-sensed data from the Washita experimental watershed during 1992. The power spectrum S(k) has an approximate power-law dependence on wave number k with the exponent −1.8. This behavior is consistent with the behavior of a stochastic differential equation for soil moisture at a point, and it has important consequences for the frequency-size distribution of landslides. We present the cumulative frequency-size distributions of landslides induced by precipitation in Japan and Bolivia as well as landslides triggered by the 1994 Northridge, California earthquake. Large landslides in these regions, despite being triggered by different mechanisms, have a cumulative frequency-size distribution with a power-law dependence on area with an exponent ranging from −1.5 to −2. We use a soil moisture field with the above statistics in conjunction with a slope stability analysis to model the frequency-size distribution of landslides. In our model, landslides occur when a threshold shear stress dependent on cohesion, pore pressure, internal friction and slope angle is exceeded. This implies a threshold dependence on soil moisture and slope angle since cohesion, pore pressure and internal friction are primarily dependent on soil moisture. The cumulative frequency-size distribution of domains of shear stress greater than a threshold value with soil moisture modeled as above and topography modeled as a Brownian walk is a power-law function of area with an exponent of −1.8 for large landslide areas. This distribution is similar to that observed for landslides. The effect of strong ground motion from earthquakes lowers the shear stress necessary for failure, but does not change the frequency-size distribution of failed areas. This is consistent with observations. This work suggests that remote sensing of soil moisture can be of great importance in monitoring landslide hazards and proposes a specific quantitative model for landslide hazard assessment.  相似文献

Metavolcanic rocks containing low-Ca amphiboles (gedrite, cummingtonite) and biotite can undergo substantial dehydration-melting. This is likely to be most prominent in Barrovian Facies Series (kyanite-sillimanite) and occurs at the same time as widespread metapelite dehydrationmelting. In lower pressure facies series, metavolcanics will be represented by granulites rich in orthopyroxene when dehydration occurs at much lower temperatures than melting. In higher pressure facies series it is not well known whether metavolcanic rocks dehydrate or melt at temperatures lower or similar to that of metapelites.  相似文献

Floor diaphragm in-plane stiffness affects building response to horizontal ground accelerations. This paper describes a series of elastic and inelastic time history analyses of symmetric structures with different deformation types, configurations and heights to quantify these effects. It is shown that displacements of single storey elastically responding structures tend to be most significantly affected by diaphragm flexibility. Analyses of these structures were cross-verified by a closed-form mechanics-based formulation developed to describe the response. Simple relationships were proposed to allow designers to conservatively estimate the increase in peak in-plane displacement resulting from diaphragm flexibility. We present spectroscopic and photometric observations, spanning the optical UV to the far red, before, during, and after the NASA Deep Impact event of July 4, 2005. The inner 2000 km of the pre- and post-impact coma was about 0.3 magnitude redder in B-R than in the outer coma. The pre-impact spectrum was a faint reflected solar spectrum dominated by molecular emissions extending >40,000 km from the nucleus. The post-impact light curve in R and I showed a rapid rise consistent with an expanding optically thick cloud during the first 18 min after impact. During the next 8 min the cloud became optically thin. Sixty minutes after impact the impact R-band flux reached a plateau at , the comet brightening by a factor of ∼4.3 above its pre-impact value observed in a 15″ aperture. The mean expansion velocity of the grains during the first 49 min was . The spectrum became dominated by scattered sunlight during the first hour after impact. The volume scattering function (VSF) observed 32 min after impact shows strong reddening. At 49 min, however, the VSF shows an additional twofold increase in the blue but only a 20% increase at 5500 Å. Post-impact spectra and R-I photometry showed rapid reddening. The particle size distribution, dominated by 1-2.5 μm particles shortly after impact, changed dramatically during the first hour due to sublimation of water-ice particles of this size. On the night following impact the comet was still substantially brighter than before impact, but R-I had returned to its pre-impact value. B-R remained significantly redder. The ejecta 25 h after impact was fan-shaped subtending ∼180° roughly symmetrical about position angle 225°. The mean expansion velocity 90° from the direction to the Sun was .  相似文献

We used chemical equilibrium calculations to model thermal metamorphism of ordinary chondritic material as a function of temperature, pressure, and trace element abundance and use our results to discuss volatile mobilization during thermal metamorphism of ordinary chondrite parent bodies. We compiled trace element abundances in H-, L-, and LL-chondrites for the elements Ag, As, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Cs, Cu, Ga, Ge, I, In, Pb, Rb, Sb, Se, Sn, Te, Tl, and Zn, and identified abundance trends as a function of petrographic type within each class. We calculated volatility sequences for the trace elements in ordinary chondritic material, which differ significantly from the solar nebula volatility sequence. Our results are consistent with open-system thermal metamorphism. Abundance patterns of Ag and Zn remain difficult to explain.  相似文献

A new numerical technique called the convolution-based particle tracking (CBPT) method is developed to simulate resident or flux-averaged solute concentrations in groundwater models. The method is valid for steady-state flow and linear transport processes such as sorption with a linear sorption isotherm and first-order decay. The CBPT method uses particle tracking to take advantage of the ability of particle-based approaches to maintain sharp fronts for advection-dominated transport problems common in groundwater modeling and because of the flexibility of the random walk method to simulate a wide range of possible forms of the dispersion tensor. Furthermore, the algorithm for carrying out the convolution and superposition calculation from particle tracking results is very efficient. We show that from a single particle tracking run, source term variability, sorption, and decay can all be simulated rapidly without rerunning the underlying transport model unless the flow field or dispersion parameters are changed. A series of verification simulations are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the CBPT method compared to more conventional particle tracking approaches.  相似文献

Young-of-the-year (YOY) bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, reside in some contaminated estuaries of the mid-Atlantic bight during their early life history, and as a result of this exposure, they may bioaccumulate high levels of contaminants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, and methyl mercury. Young-of-the-year bluefish from the Tuckerton, NJ, area of Great Bay (TK) were fed daily in a laboratory with common prey fish, menhaden, and mummichog from two sites: TK (reference) or Hackensack River (HR) (contaminated). Bluefish fed HR prey and the HR prey themselves had significantly elevated concentrations of PCBs, pesticides, and total mercury compared to TK counterparts. The bluefish fed contaminated prey for 4 months displayed significantly reduced feeding, spontaneous activity, and growth compared to the bluefish fed TK prey. Alterations of bluefish behavior and growth from exposure to contaminants may have detrimental effects on migration, overwinter survival, and recruitment success.  相似文献
