Monooxygenase reactions catalyzed by cytochromes P-450 are paramount in the oxidative metabolism of many xenobiotics, determining both the persistence and effects of numerous types of compounds. Immunological probes are proving useful in evaluating the functions of P-450 isozymes in microsomal preparations from many species. The regulation of specific isozymes by endogenous and exogenous factors can also be evaluated with such probes. Here we describe studies on the activities apparently catalyzed by induced P-450 in fish, evaluated with both polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies to cytochrome P-450E, the apparent major β-naphthoflavone(BNF) or methylcholanthrene(MC)-inducible isozyme purified from scup (S. chrysops) liver.  相似文献

The development of an analytical expression to describe the natural variation of global temperature and related climatic variables over periods from a few years or less to over a billion years is shown and seen to match the variation of eustatic sea-level over similar periods. An additional anthropogenic factor to take the greenhouse effect into account is added to this natural climatic variation giving close correlation between the combined natural-plus-anthropogenic model of global temperature variation and its observed history over the past century. This provides grounds for confidence in the subsequent deterministic forecast for the combined model and its sea-level counterpart of, for instance, about 0.7m rise by 2050AD.A tentative physical explanation of the natural climate model is given invoking the possibility that the Universal Gravitational Constant (G) may, in fact, be a variable. In parallel, the anthropogenic climate model is underlined by alluding to a theoretical explanation of the population growth mechanism which largely drives it. The interactive nature of the impact of man on sea-level rise and vice versa is stressed.  相似文献

Proper control sites for nematode abundance, patch size and patch dispersion could not be defined prior to a manipulative oil pollution experiment despite the apparent physical similarity and proximity of two locations. Comparisons of abundance and patch size demonstrated that neither site could serve as a control for the other. Spectral analysis was not useful, in this case, in resolving patch dispersion in the range of 1·2 to 60 cm. These data indicated that in circumstances where a posteriori studies comparing two areas cannot be avoided, it is only with great caution that a single factor should be interpreted as causative of observed densities or distribution of organisms.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates that HF radar systems can be used to detect tsunamis well before their arrival at a coastline. We solve the equations of motion and continuity on the ocean surface using models to simulate the signals produced by a tsunami approaching the east U.S. coast. Height and velocity profiles are derived along with expressions for the radar-observed current velocities in terms of bathymetry and tsunami height and period. Simulated tsunami-generated radial current velocities are superimposed on typical maps of radial velocity generated by a Rutgers University HF radar system. A detection parameter is defined and plotted to quantify the progress of the tsunami, which is shown to be detectable well before its arrival at the coast. We describe observations/warnings that would have been provided by HF radar systems at locations in the path of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.  相似文献

The geologic history of the eastern Indian Ocean between northwest Australia and the Java Trench is known to involve two separate events of rifting and sea-floor spreading. Late Jurassic spreading in the Argo Abyssal Plain off northwest Australia was followed by Early Cretaceous spreading in the Cuvier and Perth Abyssal Plains off west Australia. However, the evolution and interaction of these events has not been clear. Mesozoic sea-floor spreading anomalies have been identified throughout the Argo Abyssal Plain that define a rifting event and subsequent northward spreading on the northwestern Australian margin at 155 m.y.b.p. Magnetic anomalies northwest of the Argo Abyssal Plain indicate a ridge jump to the south at about 130 m.y.b.p. that is approximately synchronous with east-west rifting along the southwestern Australian margin. The Joey Rise in the Argo Plain was probably formed by volcanism at the intersection of this new rift and the spreading ridge to the north. The southern and northern spreading systems were connected through the Exmouth Plateau which was stretched and faulted as spreading progressed. The RRR triple junction was formed at the intersection of the two spreading systems and appears to have migrated west along the northern edge of the Gascoyne Abyssal Plain. Spreading off northwest Australia cannot be easily related to simultaneous spreading in the west central Pacific via any simple tectonic scheme.  相似文献

This paper describes the methods presently used to produce unaveraged radial velocity maps from radar voltage cross spectra measured by a SeaSonde, including a discussion of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm as it is applied to SeaSonde data and methods employed to alleviate difficulties associated with the use of measured antenna patterns. We also describe internal consistency checks including visual observation of the radial velocity map, consideration of the computed uncertainties and quantitative tests of radial velocities measured by two radars along the baseline between the systems. Baseline analysis is illustrated by application to two SeaSonde networks, with contrasting results that lead to a better understanding of SeaSonde output  相似文献

Contaminants derived from urban runoff have been shown to accumulate in estuarine sediments, reaching concentrations potentially capable of causing biological effects. Demonstration of effects, however, is difficult due to strong natural environmental gradients and the effects of past or present point-sources of contamination. We used multivariate methods to test two hypotheses relating to the effects of urban-derived contaminants on estuarine benthic communities. First, that patterns of distribution and abundance of benthic invertebrates in two urbanised estuaries would be different from those in two non-urbanised estuaries. Second, that the distributions of benthic invertebrates within and among the four estuaries would be related to those of urban-derived contaminants. Concentrations of contaminants were larger in estuaries with urbanised catchments and concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and DDT in some samples exceeded those at which biological effects may be expected to appear. Tests of differences in composition of benthic communities among estuaries showed that the two urban estuaries were not significantly different, but that they differed from both rural estuaries, which also differed from each other. Distributions of benthic invertebrates were significantly related to those of environmental variables, and were ordinated along axes that correlated with both natural environmental variables (nature of the sediment, position in estuary) and contaminants. Differences in faunas between the urban and non-urban estuaries were not, however, clear-cut and nor were relationships between faunal assemblages and environmental variables (including contaminants) consistent between two times of sampling.  相似文献

Abstract. This study of the enteropneust, Balanoglossus aurantiacus , in Bogue Sound, NC, provides information on the general structure and variability in geometry of its burrow, B. aurantiacus employs a funnel at the anterior end of its burrow to cave in surface sediments. It ingests, processes, then deposits these sediments back on the surface as fecal castings. Measurements made on resin casts of burrows and on photographs of surface features (burrow openings and funnels) revealed a new and consistent pattern of burrow construction. This pattern distinguishes B. aurantiacus burrows from those reported for other funnel feeders and enteropneusts (except, perhaps, for B. clavigerus). Laboratory and field observations revealed that, within its burrow, B. aurantiacus is elongated, can double-back on itself, and can use anterior burrow openings for subsequent fecal castings. Tests for significant changes in location of surface features gave estimates of how frequently individuals in aquaria and field populations abandon old burrow locations and construct new burrows. Field observations showed that B. aurantiacus will reopen a blocked burrow opening.  相似文献

We present calibration results from Jason-1 (2001-) and TOPEX/POSEIDON (1992-) overflights of a California offshore oil platform (Harvest). Data from Harvest indicate that current Jason-1 sea-surface height (SSH) measurements are high by 138 ± 18 mm. Excepting the bias, the high accuracy of the Jason-1 measurements is in evidence from the overflights. In orbit for over 10 years, the T/P measurement system is well calibrated, and the SSH bias is statistically indistinguishable from zero. Also reviewed are over 10 years of geodetic results from the Harvest experiment.  相似文献

Bulk diffusion of iron in synthetic dunites containing 1–6 vol.% fluid or melt at 10 kbar (1 GPa) and 900°–1300° C was examined by encapsulating the samples in platinum, which served as a sink for iron. The rate of iron loss from the dunite was found to depend strongly upon the identity of the fluid, which was varied from CO2 and H2O to melts of basaltic and sodium carbonate composition. Carbon dioxide in amounts up to 4 vol.% has no effect upon bulk iron diffusion because it exists in the dunite are isolated pores. The interconnected nature of H2O, basaltic melt, and carbonate melt, on the other hand, results in marked enhancement of bulk-rock Fe diffusion that is correlated with the diffusivity and solubility of olivine components in the fluid. At 1300° C, 4–5 vol.% of either water or basaltic melt increases the effective bulk diffusivity from the fluidabsent value of 10-10 cm2/s to 10-8 cm2/s. A single experiment involving a similar volume fraction of carbonate melt yielded a minimum bulk diffusivity of 10-7–10-6 cm2/s. This remarkably high value is attributable to the concurrent high diffusivity and high solubility of olivine components in molten carbonate H2O has a high diffusivity, estimated at 10-4 cm2/s in this study, and basaltic melt can dissolve large amounts of olivine, but neither possesses these two qualities in combination. Bulk transport of Fe in dunite containing <2 vol.% of pure H2O is independent of olivine grain size for samples having an average grain diameter of <10 m to 60 m. This is probably because bulk diffusion specifically in these H2O-bearing samples is ratelimited by the flux (which is proportional to concentration) of olivine components in the fluid. Given a constant fluid volume fraction, the effect of reducing the grain size is to increase the number of fluid-filled channels, but at the same time to decrease their average aperture, thus keeping constant the cross-sectional area through which the diffusional flux occurs. (Independence of bulk diffusivity from grain size is not anticipated for rocks containing melt, in which the silicate components are much more soluble.) In numerical (finite difference) simulations of selected laboratory experiments, the bulk Fe transport process was modeled as diffusion in fluid-filled tubules of triangular cross-section that are supplied by volume diffusion from contacting olivine grains with which they are in surface equilibrium. Applying a tortuosity factor of 1.7 brings the numerically computed diffusional loss profiles for experiments containing basaltic melt into near-coincidence with the experimentally-determined curves. This success in reproducing the experimental results lends credence to the interpretation of the bulk diffusional loss profiles as composites of gradients due to volume, grain-boundary and fluid-phase diffusion.  相似文献
