This article describes the design, operation, and field testing of the depthimeter. The depthimeter merges heave and acoustically derived vessel depth to form estimates of instantaneous vessel depth and instantaneous sea surface height, both relative to mean sea level. Solid-state 27Al, 29Si and 23Na MAS NMR spectra have been obtained for an Al,Si ordered low albite to low microcline ion exchange series for which unit-cell parameters and 29Si NMR data have previously been reported. 27Al δi vary continuously with composition from 63.4 (±0.5) ppm for albite to 58.9 (±0.5) ppm for microcline, and parallel the 29Si chemical shifts assigned to the T2m-site. The 27Al and 29Si chemical shifts for this series correlate well with composition-dependent lattice parameters, most notably cell volume and the angle [201]1b. The linewidths of the 29Si and 27Al resonances indicate a significant amount of structural disorder in the intermediate compositions due to Na, K substitution. The 1 σ width of the distribution of average Si-O-T angles for each T-site is estimated to be about 1° for the Or33 sample. The average 23Na δi varies monotonically from -8.5 (±1) ppm for albite to -24.3 (±1)ppm for Or83. Similarly, the average 23Na nuclear quadrupole coupling constant decreases from 2.60 to 1.15 (±0.05) MHz and the asymmetry parameter of the electric field gradient increases from 0.25 to 0.6 with increasing K-content from albite to Or83. The observed variations in the quadrupole coupling parameters are consistent with simple electrostatic calculations. Higher resolution 23Na spectra of the intermediate compositions obtained at 11.7 T indicate the presence of an inhomogeneous linebroadening which is related to the distribution of Na-environments. A model based on a random distribution of local compositions does not simulate the spectra, suggesting that the distribution of Na is skewed toward Na-rich clusters. Observation of the 23Na NMR lineshape of Or49 after short periods of heat treatment indicate that 23Na NMR is very sensitive to the changes in the Na, K distribution accompanying the early stages of exsolution. Reversible changes occur after heating at 530° C for 3 h, whereas heating at 600° C produces no changes, possibly bracketing the position of the coherent spinodal for Al, Si ordered alkali feldspars at this composition. 相似文献
As the world’s largest importer of marine ornamental species for the aquaria, curio, home décor, and jewelry industries, the United States has an opportunity to leverage its considerable market power to promote more sustainable trade and reduce the effects of ornamental trade stress on coral reefs worldwide. Evidence indicates that collection of some coral reef animals for these trades has caused virtual elimination of local populations, major changes in age structure, and promotion of collection practices that destroy reef habitats. Management and enforcement of collection activities in major source countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines remain weak. Strengthening US trade laws and enforcement capabilities combined with increasing consumer and industry demand for responsible conservation can create strong incentives for improving management in source countries. This is particularly important in light of the March 2010 failure of the parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to take action on key groups of corals. 相似文献
It is becoming more apparent that commonly used statistical methods (e.g. analysis of variance and regression) are not the
best methods for estimating limiting relationships or stressor effects. A major challenge of estimating the effects associated
with a measured subset of limiting factors is to account for the effects of unmeasured factors in an ecologically realistic
matter. We used quantile regression to elucidate multiple stressor effects on end-of-season biomass data from two salt marsh
sites in coastal Louisiana collected for 18 yr. Stressor effects evaluated based on available data were flooding, salinity
air temperature, cloud cover, precipitation deficit, grazing by muskrat, and surface water nitrogen and phosphorus. Precipitation
deficit combined with surface water nitrogen provided the best two-parameter model to explain variation in the peak biomass
with different slopes and intercepts for the two study sites. Precipitation deficit, cloud cover, and temperature were significantly
correlated with each other. Surface water nitrogen was significantly correlated with surface water phosphorus and muskrat
density. The site with the larger duration of flooding showed reduced peak biomass, when cloud cover and surface water nitrogen
were optimal. Variation in the relatively low salinity occurring in our study area did not explain any of the variation inSpartina alterniflora biomass. 相似文献
The voluminous 2.5 Ga banded iron formations (BIFs) from the Hamersley Basin (Australia) and Transvaal Craton (South Africa) record an extensive period of Fe redox cycling. The major Fe-bearing minerals in the Hamersley-Transvaal BIFs, magnetite and siderite, did not form in Fe isotope equilibrium, but instead reflect distinct formation pathways. The near-zero average δ56Fe values for magnetite record a strong inheritance from Fe3+ oxide/hydroxide precursors that formed in the upper water column through complete or near-complete oxidation. Transformation of the Fe3+ oxide/hydroxide precursors to magnetite occurred through several diagenetic processes that produced a range of δ56Fe values: (1) addition of marine hydrothermal , (2) complete reduction by bacterial dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR), and (3) interaction with excess that had low δ56Fe values and was produced by DIR. Most siderite has slightly negative δ56Fe values of ∼ −0.5‰ that indicate equilibrium with Late Archean seawater, although some very negative δ56Fe values may record DIR. Support for an important role of DIR in siderite formation in BIFs comes from previously published C isotope data on siderite, which may be explained as a mixture of C from bacterial and seawater sources.Several factors likely contributed to the important role that DIR played in BIF formation, including high rates of ferric oxide/hydroxide formation in the upper water column, delivery of organic carbon produced by photosynthesis, and low clastic input. We infer that DIR-driven Fe redox cycling was much more important at this time than in modern marine systems. The low pyrite contents of magnetite- and siderite-facies BIFs suggests that bacterial sulfate reduction was minor, at least in the environments of BIF formation, and the absence of sulfide was important in preserving magnetite and siderite in the BIFs, minerals that are poorly preserved in the modern marine record. The paucity of negative δ56Fe values in older (Early Archean) and younger (Early Proterozoic) BIFs suggests that the extensive 2.5 Ga Hamersley-Transvaal BIFs may record a period of maximum expansion of DIR in Earth’s history. 相似文献
On 22 March 2014, a massive, catastrophic landslide occurred near Oso, Washington, USA, sweeping more than 1 km across the adjacent valley flats and killing 43 people. For the following 5 weeks, hundreds of workers engaged in an exhaustive search, rescue, and recovery effort directly in the landslide runout path. These workers could not avoid the risks posed by additional large-scale slope collapses. In an effort to ensure worker safety, multiple agencies cooperated to swiftly deploy a monitoring and alerting system consisting of sensors, automated data processing and web-based display, along with defined communication protocols and clear calls to action for emergency management and search personnel. Guided by the principle that an accelerating landslide poses a greater threat than a steadily moving or stationary mass, the system was designed to detect ground motion and vibration using complementary monitoring techniques. Near real-time information was provided by continuous GPS, seismometers/geophones, and extensometers. This information was augmented by repeat-assessment techniques such as terrestrial and aerial laser scanning and time-lapse photography. Fortunately, no major additional landsliding occurred. However, we did detect small headscarp failures as well as slow movement of the remaining landslide mass with the monitoring system. This was an exceptional response situation and the lessons learned are applicable to other landslide disaster crises. They underscore the need for cogent landslide expertise and ready-to-deploy monitoring equipment, the value of using redundant monitoring techniques with distinct goals, the benefit of clearly defined communication protocols, and the importance of continued research into forecasting landslide behavior to allow timely warning.
Public debate and prior scholarship tend to emphasize the link between gentrification and high-end chain retail, underscoring the importance of taste cultures tied to social class in making sense of gentrification’s impact on neighborhood identity. In this study, we present evidence from 10 years of change in the businesses of Brooklyn, New York City, a period of extensive gentrification across a wide variety of neighborhood and census-tract level contexts. Adopting census tracts clustered in neighborhoods as the units of analysis, we model the effects of institutional and demographic change on two separate outcomes: chain retail density and homogeneity in the types of goods and services available. We argue that changes in consumer culture embedded in broader processes of gentrification are neither “chaotic” nor “unitary” but are “segmented” according to local spatial and demographic context, taking two discrete forms: institutionally facilitated corporatization; lifestyle-driven homogenization. 相似文献
Models of late-glacial environmental change in coastal areas are commonly based on radiocarbon ages on marine shell and basal lake sediments, both of which may be compromised by reservoir effects. The magnitude of the oceanic reservoir age in the inland waters of the Georgia Basin and Puget Lowland of northwestern North America is inferred from radiocarbon ages on shell-wood pairs in Saanich Inlet and previously published estimates. The weighted mean oceanic reservoir correction in the early and mid Holocene is −720±90 yr, slightly smaller than, but not significantly different from, the modern value. The correction in late-glacial time is −950±50 yr. Valley-head sites yield higher reservoir values (−1200±130 yr) immediately after deglaciation. The magnitude of the gyttja reservoir effect is inferred from pairs of bulk gyttja and plant macrofossil ages from four lakes in the region. Incorporation of old carbon into basal gyttja yields ages from bulk samples that are initially about 600 yr too old. The reservoir age declines to less than 100 yr after the first millennium of lake development. When these corrections are accounted for, dates of deglaciation and late-glacial sea-level change in the study area are pushed forward in time by more than 500 yr. 相似文献
