The minerals of the pearceite–polybasite group, general formula (Ag,Cu)16 M 2S11 with M = Sb, As, have been recently structurally characterized. On the whole, all the structures can be described as a regular succession of two module layers stacked along the c axis: a first module layer (labeled A), with general composition [(Ag,Cu)6(As,Sb)2S7]2−, and a second module layer (labeled B), with general composition [Ag9CuS4]2+. In detail, in the B layer of the pearceite structure silver cations are found in various sites corresponding to the most pronounced probability density function locations of diffusion-like paths. We have shown for the first time that the observed structural disorder in the B layer is strongly related to the fast ion conduction character exhibited by these minerals. This paper reports an integrated XREF, DSC, CIS and EPMA study on all the members of the pearceite–polybasite group. DSC and conductivity measurements pointed out that the 222 members show ionic-transitions at 340 K (arsenpolybasite-222) and 350 K (polybasite-222), whereas the 221 members have transitions at lower temperature, that is, 310–330 K (arsenpolybasite-221) and 335 K (polybasite-221). For the 111 members (pearceite and antimonpearceite), the transition occurs below room temperature at 273 K. In situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments showed that these minerals present the same high temperature structure and are observed at room temperature either in their high temperature (HT) fast ion conductivity form or in one of the low temperature (LT) fully ordered (222), partially ordered (221) or still disordered (111) forms, with transition temperatures slightly above or below room temperature. The pearceite–polybasite group of minerals can be considered as a homogeneous series with the same aristotype, fast ion conducting form at high temperature. Depending upon the Cu content, an ordering occurs with transition temperatures related to that content: the lower the Cu content, the higher the transition temperature from the fast ion conducting HT form to the non-ion conducting form.Electronic supplementary material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

This paper examines the implications of statements by Australia’s Minister of… Resources that Australia’s exports of coal are growing rapidly and that Australia’s coal will last “110 years at current rates of production.” If one assumes that coal production P(t), follows a Gaussian curve (similar to a Hubbert curve) one can construct a family of Gaussian curves showing possible future paths of P(t) which are consistent with the cited “110 years.” Each curve reaches a maximum after which P(t) declines toward zero. Knowledge of the present value of dP/dt allows one member of the family to be identified as the most probable future path of P(t). Families of curves and tabular data are presented for resource quantities that would last 50, 100 and 200 years “at current rates of production.” If, instead, Australia’s P(t) follows a declining exponential curve (exp(−kt)) with k = (1/110) per year, the stated quantity of coal will allow production to continue forever, with P(t) declining with a half life of 76 y. This and more rapidly declining exponential paths are the only paths that can be said to be sustainable. The envelope of the family of Gaussian curves divides the (P, t) plane into “allowed” and “forbidden” areas. The declining exponential curve divides the “allowed” area into an upper area that is “terminal” and a lower area that is “sustainable.” These facts, coupled with Australia’s expectations of rapid growth of its population, suggest that Australia’s present resource policies are “anti-sustainable” and that the people of Australia need to rethink their present policy of rapidly exporting their fossil fuels.  相似文献

A 3-D, time-dependent, baroclinic, hydrodynamic and salinity model was implemented and applied to the Danshuei River estuarine system and the adjacent coastal sea in Taiwan. The model forcing functions consist of tidal elevations along the open boundaries and freshwater inflows from the main stream and major tributaries in the Danshuei River estuarine system. The bottom friction coefficient was adjusted to achieve model calibration and verification in model simulations of barotropic and baroclinic flows. The turbulent diffusivities were ascertained through comparison of simulated salinity time series with observations. The model simulation results are in qualitative agreement with the available field data.  相似文献

Surface water and groundwater in the Heihe river basin of China are interconnected and the pattern of water resources exploitation has a direct effect on the interaction of groundwater and surface water, especially on a downstream oasis. A three‐dimensional groundwater flow simulation model with eight model layers was established to simulate the regional groundwater flow in the multilayered aquifer system and the interaction among the rivers, springs, and groundwater. The model was calibrated not only with historical water levels but also with the investigated baseflow and spring flux. The simulation results of the numerical model match reasonably well with the observed groundwater levels, baseflow to rivers, and spring flux. The numerical simulation also demonstrates that the hydraulic connection between the river and the aquifers has transferred from the coupling to decoupling at some reaches. It is suggested that there is a vital need to reduce groundwater withdrawal and to rationalize the use of both groundwater and surface water in order to maintain sustainable development in the study area. The Weston meteorite is a breccia containing mostly light-colored equilibrated chondritic xenoliths and less abundant highly un-equilibrated chondritic inclusions fixed in a dark grey host of chondrules, mineral and rock fragments. Many of the inclusions show evidence of shock. Unlike most xenolithic chondrites, the Weston host contains a large fraction of considerably more equilibrated silicates than is found in the unequilibrated inclusions, suggesting either that most host silicates retain the mineral chemistry of an equilibrated source indigenous to Weston, or represent a unique fraction which equilibrated separately, prior to final agglomeration. The host silicates are similar in composition to minerals in the common xenoliths, supporting the former possibility that host chondrules and mineral fragments are derived from the xenolithic material, probably by impact fragmentation and melting. Also mixed with Weston is a small but distinct carbonaceous component including the minerals fassaite, Fespinel, forsterite, magnetite and Ca-Al-rich inclusion which are normally associated with carbonaceous chondrites.  相似文献

Small-scale faults with associated drag folds in brittle-ductile rocks can retain detailed information on the kinematics and amount of deformation the host rock experienced. Measured fault orientation (α), drag angle (β) and the ratio of the thickness of deflected layers at the fault (L) and further away (T) can be compared with α, β and L/T values that are calculated with a simple analytical model. Using graphs or a numerical best-fit routine, one can then determine the kinematic vorticity number and initial fault orientation that best fits the data. The proposed method was successfully tested on both analogue experiments and numerical simulations with BASIL. Using this method, a kinematic vorticity number of one (dextral simple shear) and a minimum finite strain of 2.5–3.8 was obtained for a population of antithetic faults with associated drag folds in a case study area at Mas Rabassers de Dalt on Cap de Creus in the Variscan of the easternmost Pyrenees, Spain.  相似文献

There is great international concern over the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide and its effect on vegetation and climate, and vice versa. Many studies on this issue are based on climate model calculations or indirect satellite observations. In contrast we present a 12-year study (1994–2005) on the net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (NEE) and precipitation surplus (i.e., precipitation–evaporation) of a grassland area in the centre of the Netherlands. On basis of direct flux observations and a process-based model we study and quantify the carbon uptake via assimilation and carbon release via soil and plant respiration. It appears that nearly year-round the assimilation term dominates, which indicates an accumulation of carbon dioxide. The mean net carbon uptake for the 12-year period is about 3 tonnes C per hectare, but with a strong seasonal and interannual variability depending on the weather and water budget. This variability may severely hamper the accurate quantification of carbon storage by vegetation in our present climates and its projection for future climates.  相似文献
