The effects of estuarine circulation and tidal trapping on transport in the Hudson estuary were investigated by a large-scale, high-resolution numerical model simulation of a tracer release. The modeled and measured longitudinal profiles of surface tracer concentrations (plumes) differ from the ideal Gaussian shape in two ways: on a large scale the plume is asymmetric with the downstream end stretching out farther, and small-scale (1–2 km) peaks are present at the upstream and downstream ends of the plume. A number of diagnostic model simulations (e.g., remove freshwater flow) were performed to understand the processes responsible for these features. These simulations show that the large-scale asymmetry is related to salinity. The salt causes an estuarine circulation that decreases vertical mixing (vertical density gradient), increases longitudinal dispersion (increased vertical and lateral gradients in longitudinal velocities), and increases net downstream velocities in the surface layer. Since salinity intrusion is confined to the downstream end of the tracer plume, only that part of the plume is effected by those processes, which leads to the largescale asymmetry. The small-scale peaks are due to tidal trapping. Small embayments along the estuary trap water and tracer as the plume passes by in the main channel. When the plume in the main channel has passed, the tracer is released back to the main channel, causing a secondary peak in the longitudinal profile.  相似文献

AQUIPRO, a PC-based method, was used to assess aquifer vulnerability using digital water well logs. The AQUIPRO model is a parameter/factor weighting system for rating the pollution potential of an aquifer. This method uses the well depth, as well as the clay and partial clay thickness in a well, to generate pollution potential scores. In this model, aquifer protection increases as the AQUIPRO vulnerability scores increase and ground water pollution potential decreases. Computerized water well records of 2435 domestic wells with partial chemistry data were used to determine the ground water pollution potential of Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Theoretically, low AQUIPRO pollution potential scores should have more frequent occurrences of ground water contamination events than areas with high AQUIPRO scores with similar land-use, well construction, and well densities. The relative AQUIPRO scores were compared with the frequency of occurrences of nitrate-N in ground water wells. The average nitrate-N concentrations within each relative AQUIPRO vulnerability scores category were also compared. The results indicate that domestic wells containing 5 mg/L or more nitrate-N showed a positive correlation between the frequency of occurrences of nitrate-N and relative decrease of AQUIPRO (r2 = 0.99) vulnerability scores. In other words, as the ground water pollution potential increases, the occurrence frequency of nitrate-N also increases. Furthermore, the results show that as the relative AQUIPRO (r2 = 0.96) vulnerability scores decrease, the mean nitrate-N concentrations also increase.  相似文献

In addition to shock effects in olivine, plagioclase, orthopyroxene and Ca-pyroxene, petrographic shock indicators in equilibrated ordinary chondrites (OC) include chromite veinlets, chromite-plagioclase assemblages, polycrystalline troilite, metallic Cu, irregularly shaped troilite grains within metallic Fe-Ni, rapidly solidified metal-sulfide intergrowths, martensite and various types of plessite, metal-sulfide veins, large metal and/or sulfide nodules, silicate melt veins, silicate darkening, low-Ca clinopyroxene, silicate melt pockets, and large regions of silicate melt. The presence of some of these indicators in every petrologic type-4 to -6 ordinary chondrite demonstrates that collisional events caused all equilibrated OC to reach shock stages S3-S6. Those type-4 to -6 OC that are classified as shock-stage S1 (on the basis of sharp optical extinction in olivine) underwent postshock annealing due to burial beneath materials heated by the impact event. Those type-4 to -6 OC that are classified S2 (on the basis of undulose extinction and lack of planar fractures in olivine) were shocked to stage S3-S6, annealed to stage S1 and then shocked again to stage S2. Some OC were probably shocked to stage ≥ S3 after annealing. It seems likely that many OC experienced multiple episodes of shock and annealing.Because 40Ar-39Ar chronological data indicate that MIL 99301 (LL6, S1) was annealed ∼ 4.26 Ga ago, presumably as a consequence of a major impact, it seems reasonable to suggest that other equilibrated S1 and S2 OC (which contain relict shock features) were also annealed by impacts. Because some type-6 S1 OC (e.g., Guareña, Kernouvé, Portales Valley, all of which contain relict shock features) were annealed 4.44- 4.45 Ga ago (during a period when impacts were prevalent and most OC were thermally metamorphosed), it follows that impact-induced annealing could have contributed significantly to OC thermal metamorphism.  相似文献

Lacustrine and alluvial terraces and sediments record the extent of at least two Holocene glacially dammed lakes immediately upstream of the Tsangpo River gorge at the eastern syntaxis of the Himalaya. The larger lake covered 2835 km2, with a maximum depth of 680 m and contained an estimated 832 km3 of water; the smaller lake contained an estimated 80 km3 of water. Radiocarbon dating of wood and charcoal yielded conventional radiocarbon ages of 8860 ± 40 and 9870 ± 50 14C yr B.P. for the higher set of lake terraces, and 1220 ± 40 and 1660 ± 40 14C yr B.P. for sediments from the lower terraces. Catastrophic failure of the glacial dams that impounded the lakes would have released outburst floods down the gorge of the Tsangpo River with estimated peak discharges of up to 1 to 5 × 106 m3 s−1. The erosive potential represented by the unit stream power calculated for the head of the gorge during such a catastrophic lake breakout indicates that post-glacial megafloods down the Tsangpo River were likely among the most erosive events in recent Earth history.  相似文献

A three-dimensional prognostic hydrodynamic model in cross sectional form is used to examine the influence of bottom friction, mixing and topography upon the spin-down and steady-state circulation in a cold water bottom-dome. Parameters characteristic of the Irish Sea or Yellow Sea cold water domes are used. In all calculations, motion is induced by specifying an initial temperature distribution characteristic of the dome, and an associated along frontal flow. The spin-down of the dome is found to be influenced by the coefficient of bottom friction, with a typical time scale of order 10 days, and in general to be independent of the chosen initial vertical profile of along frontal flow. However, in the case in which the along frontal flow is such that the near bed velocity is zero, then bottom stress is also zero, and there is no appreciable spin-down. Calculations showed that the formulation of viscosity and diffusivity had a greater effect upon the steady-state circulation than topography, suggesting that background mixing of tidal origin is important. The lack of topographic influence was due mainly to the formulation of the initial conditions which were taken to be independent of topography. The steady-state circulation was characterized by a cyclonic flow in the surface region, with an anti-cyclonic current near the bed, where frictional effects produced a bottom Ekman layer and an across frontal flow. This gave rise to vertical circulation cells in the frontal region of the dome with prevailing downwelling motion inside the dome. A detailed analysis of the dynamic balance of the various terms in the hydrodynamic equations yielded insight into the processes controlling the steady-state circulation in cold water domes. Following the collapse of the New York World Trade Center (WTC) towers on September 11, 2001, Local, State, and Federal agencies initiated numerous air monitoring activities to better understand the ongoing impacts of emissions from the disaster. The collapse of the World Trade Center towers and associated fires that lasted for several weeks resulted at times in a noticeable plume of material that was dispersed around the Metropolitan New York City (NYC) area. In general, the plume was only noticeable for a short period of time following September 11, and only apparent close to the World Trade Center site. A study of the estimated pathway which the plume of WTC material would likely follow was completed to support the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s 2002 initial exposure assessments. In this study, the WTC emissions were simulated using the CALMET-CALPUFF model in order to examine the general spatial and temporal dispersion patterns over NYC. This paper presents the results of the CALPUFF plume model in terms of plume dilution and location, since the exact source strength remains unknown. Independent observations of PM2.5 are used to support the general dispersion features calculated by the model. Results indicate that the simulated plume matched well with an abnormal increase (600–1000% of normal) in PM2.5 two nights after the WTC collapse as the plume rotated north to southeast, towards parts of NYC. Very little if any evidence of the plume signature was noted during a similar flow scenario a week after September 11. This leads to the conclusion that other than areas within a few kilometers from the WTC site, the PM2.5 plume was not observable over NYC’s background concentration after the first few days.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments have been conducted to measure rock expansion and contraction induced by wetting and drying on intertidal shore platforms in eastern Canada. Almost 800 rock cores and cubes were subjected to between 800 and 1000 tidal cycles. The rocks were put into tidal simulators and inundated in de-ionized water for 1, 6, or 11 h of each 12 h cycle, replicating conditions at the high, mid-, and low tidal levels, respectively. Micro-erosion meter (MEM) stations were also installed in slabs of argillite, sandstone, and basalt. The slabs were subjected to conditions at the high, mid-, and low tidal levels, and a traversing MEM was used to measure rock expansion and contraction as the slabs dried in air with variable temperature and humidity during low tide. The slabs were also exposed for long periods to air with variable humidity. Cores and cubes often gained in weight when they absorbed or adsorbed water and retained it for periods ranging from 1 month to 1 year or more, although this did not appear to be a prelude to rock breakdown. Tidal wetting and drying and exposure to humid air caused the argillite and basalt slabs to expand and contract by up to 0.14 and 0.04 mm, respectively. Wetting and drying did not induce expansion or contraction of the sandstone, but the sandstone did respond slightly to changes in air humidity. The greatest amount of expansion and contraction was at the high tidal level in the argillite and at the mid-tidal level in the basalt, which is consistent with previously measured rates of downwearing.  相似文献
