Summary Ideas concerning the overturning of unstably stratified, rotating fluids are explored using potential vorticity.A set of equations governing axi-symmetric flow in a quasi-Boussinesq system are found based on the gradient wind approximation, and a transformation analogous to that developed byHoskins [6] is used.The time-development of a linear, thermally unstable vortex under the action of Ekman pumping is studied with these equations. The changing radial scale during amplification of the vortex is well represented.Finally, some exact steady vortex states for stably stratified fluids are found and their possible relevance to atmospheric vortices is discussed.  相似文献

Examples of fenitization of pure quartzites provide valuable insight into the relative mobility of elements. This investigation of fenites from the Borralan complex shows that rare-earth elements are mobile and added during fenitization of quartzite. The resulting normalized patterns are distinctive in their enrichment of the light rare earths and steep drops in the interval Nd-Eu. In terms of rare-earth geochemistry, no difference can be found between the sodic and the potassic trends of fenitization at Borralan. Concentrations of mobile elements define straight-line plots through the origin, heretofore considered a criterion indicative of a fractional crystallization process.Present address: Department of Geological Sciences, McGill University, 3450 University Street, Montreal, Que. Nine new heat flow determinations and several measurements of radioactive heat generation are presented for the Superior Province. The average value of twenty-one heat flows now published for the Superior, corrected for Pleistocene glaciation, is 40 ± 8 mW/m2. Heat generation values are low generally less than 3 μWW/m3. Although individual values of the ratio of thorium to uranium vary considerably, the geometrical average of four is lower than results from other Archean rocks.A linear relation between the heat flow and radioactive heat generation may exist. The reduced heat flow, 21 mW/m2, and the characteristic depth, 14 km, from this relation are quite different from other heat flow provinces. Since large thicknesses of the crust have been eroded away and since the original heat generation was much larger than the values measured now, a linear relation equivalent to those found in younger heat flow provinces is not expected.To account for the large differences in heat flow and heat generation observed in different Archean shields an Archean crustal model is proposed which includes thin (2–4 km) radioactive surface veneers over some areas.The thermal parameters of a young crust may well determine whether or not it will survive. Since Archean times the heat flow of each newly stabilized region has been a constant, and since the time of formation or last orogeny the heat flow in each province has steadily decreased. The geothermal gradients in Archean crust have decreased the most, causing significant underplating, and increasing the strength of the crust.  相似文献

Calculation of muscovite-paragonite-alkali feldspar phase relations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Experimental data on K-Na exchange between NaCl-KCl-H2O fluids and alkali feldspars or white micas, and end-member dehydration reactions of white mica (± quartz to alkali feldspar plus corundum (or Al2SiO5) and H2O have been used to evaluate K-Na exchange potentials between coexisting white mica and alkali feldspar. Calculations using these exchange potentials and Margules parameters for excess molar Gibbs energies of alkali feld-spars and white micas have permitted the construction of a projected binary phase diagram for the white mica dehydration. Extrapolation to higher temperatures and pressures gives a topology wholly consistent with field evidence. The subsolidus univariant curves intersect H2O-saturated minimum-melting curves. At pressures greater than about 6 kbar the common assemblage Ms+Or+Ab+Q could undergo H2O-saturated minimum-melting at lower temperatures than the disappearance of paragonite or the kyanite-sillimanite isograd in more aluminous rocks. The apparent restriction of anatexis to rocks above the second sillimanite isograd may imply that activity of H2O is usually less than unity in high-grade regional metamorphism.  相似文献

Parallel to the Essex coast north of the mouth of the Thames, a series of gravel spreads ranging in altitude from near sea level westward to more than 200 ft O.D. (mean sea level) proved to be the remnants of an abandoned Thames/Medway terrace system, rather than a series of “raised” beaches, as their location had suggested. The seaward side of the ancient river valley has subsequently been “captured” by subsidence.Evidence is given for five terraces, with surface levels between 5 and 75 ft O.D. Because of subsidence of the Essex coast, the terrace levels are not easily correlatable with either the Thames or Medway terrace levels. Temporal placement is attempted on the basis of one site in the 25 ft Barling terrace, which yielded a Middle Acheulian archaeological assemblage associated with a cool temperate fauna including an early form of mammoth. An ice wedge cast in the Barling terrace was filled with floodloam which weathered to a parabraunerde soil during an interglacial climate warmer than now. For these reasons man is thought to have lived on the floodplain of the Barling terrace either at the onset of the Wolstonian (Riss) glacial or during an interstadial of that stage. The question of possible linkages between Swanscombe and Clacton terraces is discussed.  相似文献

Liquidus and subliquidus phase relations of a leucite-lamproite (wolgidite) from the West Kimberley area, Australia have been studied experimentally under the volatile conditions of 3.22 wt.% H2O ( \(X_{CO_2 }\) =0.11) and 13.0 wt.% H2O ( \(X_{CO_2 }\) =0.03) between 10 to 40 kbar. Under these conditions, liquids are vapour undersaturated. In experiments with 13.0 wt.% H2O, olivine is the liquidus phase up to 24 kbar and orthopyroxene above 24 kbar. Phlogopite and rutile occur close to the liquidus above 16 kbar. Crystallization temperatures of clinopyroxenes are 50–120° C below the liquidus. Based on these results, wolgidite magma is unlikely to be a partial melt of a garnet- or spinel-lherzolite mantle but could be derived from phlogopite+rutile±olivine±or-thopyroxene assemblages occurring as metasomatized mantle.  相似文献

The Greens Creek polymetallic massive sulphide deposit is hosted in a typical polyphase deformed lower greenschist facies orogenic setting. The structure of the host rocks is well constrained, exhibiting a series of three superimposed ductile deformations followed by two brittle episodes. The ore is found both in fold hinges where early-formed depositional features are preserved and in fold limbs where primary features are typically strongly modified or obliterated. Samples from both settings have been investigated using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) coupled with forescatter orientation contrast (OC) imaging in order to observe the effects of deformation and lower greenschist facies metamorphism on pyrite. Results suggest that colloform pyrite may preserve information relevant to palaeoenvironment, that apparently simple textures are generally more complex, and that pyrite can deform plastically by dislocation glide and creep processes at lower temperatures and/or strain rates than generally accepted. This analysis indicates that EBSD and OC imaging provide powerful tools for observing textural relationships in pyrite that are not shown by more traditional methods. Natural seabed gas seeps as sources of atmospheric methane   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Microbial and thermogenic methane migrates towards the seabed where some is utilised during microbially-mediated anaerobic oxidation. Excess methane escapes as gas seeps, which occur in a variety of geological contexts in every sea and ocean, from inter-tidal zones to deep ocean trenches. Some seeps are localised, gentle emanations; others are vigorous covering areas of >1 km2; the most prolific seeps reported (offshore Georgia) produce ~40 t CH4 per year. Gas bubbles lose methane to the water as they rise, so deep water seeps are unlikely to contribute to the atmosphere. However, bubbles break the surface above some shallow water seeps. Estimates of the total methane contribution to the atmosphere are poorly constrained, largely because the data set is so small. 20 Tg yr–1 is considered a realistic first approximation. This is a significant contribution to the global budget, particularly as methane from seeps is 14C-depleted. A seep measurement programme is urgently required.GEM  相似文献

A three-dimensional model covering the northwest European Shelf and part of the adjacent Atlantic Ocean is used to examine the influence of water depth change upon the distribution of maximum tidal bed stress. The direction of bed stress is an indicator of sediment movement as bed load and various regions of convergence and divergence in good agreement with observations are identified. Calculations are performed with water depths reduced by 35 m, corresponding to 10 000 years before present (B.P.). Initially, the model is forced by only the M2 tide, although subsequently five constituents, namely M2, S2, N2, K1 and O1, are used for tidal forcing. Although the distribution of extreme bed stresses computed with only M2 tidal forcing is comparable to that computed with five tides, the additional tidal constituents modify the magnitude of the bed stress. In particular the diurnal tides show regions of local enhanced current amplitude in the shelf-edge region with corresponding changes in bed stress. When water depths are reduced such that the North Sea and English Channel are separated, then there is a significant change in the tidal distribution in the shallow Southern Bight which influences bed-stress distributions and hence bed-load sediment transport in the area. Besides changes in shallow regions, the distribution of tides at the shelf edge is affected. A discussion of the limitations of the present coarse-grid model in shelf-edge regions and how it can be used to provide boundary conditions for limited-area three-dimensional models that can include stratification is presented.
