A solar flare that occurred on the west limb at 1981, March 25, 2038 UT generated a massive, rapidly-expanding optical coronal transient, which moved outward with an approximately constant velocity of 800 km s–1. An associated magnetohydrodynamic shock travelled out ahead of the transient with a velocity estimated to be approximately 1000 km s–1. The optical and radio data on the transient and shock fit well with general theories concerning piston-driven shocks and with current MHD models for propagation of such shocks through the solar corona.  相似文献

New image-tube spectra of Triton are analyzed for a determination of the reflectance of the satellite between 0.32 and 0.74 μm. Comparison of the violet reflectance of Triton with that of terrestrial minerals, lunar samples, and meteorites, gives evidence that the satellite surface is composed largely of rocky material having the same sources of violet opacity (mineral charge transfer and crystal field transitions). New radiometric observations set a stringent upper limit to the satellite radius (r ? 2600 km) and a lower limit to the geometric albedo (pv ? 0.19). The albedo can be somewhat higher and still within the range allowed by a rocky surface. No useful constraints can be put on the mean density of Triton because of remaining uncertainties in the radius and the mass. The image-tube spectra show no evidence of gaseous absorption in the methane bands, though a stronger band has been found in the infrared at 2.3 μm (Cruikshank and Silvaggio, 1979, in press; the near-infrared photometric colors may be affected by the CH4 band. Rayleigh scattering computations of a potential inert atmospheric component of Triton appear to preclude the presence of large quantities of nitrogen and the noble gases.  相似文献

Satellite infrared(IR)sounder and imager measurements have become one of the main sources of data used by data assimilation systems to generate initial conditions for numerical weather prediction(NWP)models and atmospheric analysis/reanalysis.This paper reviews the development of satellite IR data assimilation in NWP in recent years,especially the assimilation of all-sky satellite IR observations.The major challenges and future directions are outlined and discussed.  相似文献

Following the collapse of the New York City World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001, Local, State and Federal agencies initiated numerous air monitoring activities to better understand the impact of emissions from the disaster. A study of the estimated pathway that a potential plume of emissions would likely track was completed to support the U.S. EPA’s initial exposure assessments. The plume from the World Trade Center was estimated using the CALMET-CALPUFF dispersion modeling system. The following is the first of two reports that compares several meteorological models, including the CALMET diagnostic model, the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) and 5th Generation Mesoscale Model (MM5) in the complex marine-influenced urban setting of NYC. Results indicate wind speed, in most cases, is greater in CALMET than the two mesoscale models because the CALMET micrometeorological processor does not properly adjust the wind field for surface roughness variations that exits in a major built-up urban area. Small-scale circulations, which were resolved by the mesoscale models, were not well simulated by CALMET. Independent wind observations in Lower Manhattan suggest that the wind direction estimates of CALMET possess a high degree of error because of the urban influence. Wind speed is on average 1.5 ms−1 stronger in CALMET than what observations indicate. The wind direction downwind of the city is rotated 25–34 clockwise in CALMET, relative to what observations indicate.  相似文献

Abstract— The size-frequency distributions of chondrules in 11 CO3 chondrites were determined by petrographic analysis of thin sections. CO chondrites have the smallest chondrules of any major chondrite group. In order of decreasing chondrule size, chondrite groups can be arranged as CV ≥ LL > L > H ≥ CM ≥ EH > CO. Chondrule size varies significantly among different CO chondrites; there is a tendency for chondrules to increase in average size with increasing metamorphic grade of the whole-rock. Different chondrule types in CO chondrites have distinct size-frequency distributions: in order of decreasing chondrule size, BO > PO > PP > POP > RP = C. The large size of BO chondrules is problematic; however, PO chondrules are among the largest because ~20% of them contain very coarse relict olivine grains that constitute 40–90 vol.% of the individual chondrules. PP chondrules may be larger than POP chondrules because some of them contain coarse relict pyroxene grains; a compound object consisting of a POP chondrule attached to a large relict pyroxene grain occurs in Lancé. The mean proportions of chondrule types in CO chondrites are estimated to be 69% POP, 18% PP, 8% PO, 2% BO, 2% RP, 1% C and <0.1% GOP. CO chondrites thus contain a smaller proportion of nonporphyritic chondrules than ordinary or EH chondrites, but a larger proportion than CV chondrites. Relative proportions of chondrule types vary with size interval: PO chondrules decrease fairly regularly in abundance with decreasing chondrule size, and RP chondrules appear to be most abundant in the smallest size intervals.  相似文献

Elemental compositions of olivine, low-Ca pyroxene and mesostasis in chondrules from type-3 ordinary chondrites (OC), CV3, CO3, CM2 and EH3 chondrites were compiled in a search for mineral compositional differences among chondrules of different chondrite groups. Such differences are demonstrated. A few elements occur in silicic phases in amounts proportional to their bulk chondrule concentrations: e.g., Mn in OC chondrules, Ti in CV chondrules, Cr in EH chondrules. However, OC chondrules have higher bulk Cr than CM-CO chondrules, higher Cr in mesostasis, but lower Cr in olivine and low-Ca pyroxene. The higher oxidation state of OC chondrules implies that Cr is more likely to be trivalent, and thus, less likely to enter the olivine crystal structure and more likely to concentrate in pyroxene and mesostasis. CV and OC chondrules have similar high bulk Fe and mesostasis Fe, but OC chondrules have much more FeO in olivine and low-Ca pyroxene. The remaining Fe in CV chondrules is reduced and occurs as metal blebs in the mesostasis. Relative to OC chondrules, EH chondrules have lower bulk Ca, lower Ca in pyroxene and mesostasis, but higher (by a factor of 2) Ca in olivine. EH chondrules may have been incompletely melted, preserving relict refractory lithophile-rich olivine nuclei. OC chondrules are richer than EH chondrules in FeO; they have a lower melting temperature and may have been more completely melted during chondrule formation.  相似文献

The propagation of Alfvén waves in a simple model of a sunspot is considered. The vertical structure near the center of the umbra is modelled realistically, but the horizontal structure is not considered. The full wave equation is solved, without recourse to the WKB approximation. Only wave propagation in the vicinity of the central field line in an axially symmetric spot is examined, and it is assumed that this field line is open. By taking wave reflections into account, we find that the observations of non-thermal motions near the temperature minimum (Beckers, 1976) and in the corona (Beckers and Schneeberger, 1977) are both consistent with an upward-propagating Alfvénic energy flux density of a few times 107 erg cm–2 s–1. This flux density is too small to cool the sunspot, but it is large enough to supply the energy requirements of the transition region and corona above a sunspot. This conclusion depends on the assumptions that the observed motions are indeed Alfvénic with periods near 180 s.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

During the past 25 years, geochemical prospecting techniques have been applied in the search for porphyry copper-type mineralization in many parts of the world. This review lists several important porphyry copper deposits which were discovered, or their potential indicated, by the application of geochemical exploration methods.In addition, a discussion is presented of selected case histories and research illustrating the effectiveness of the use of stream sediments, soils, water, rock, vegetation and other sample media for porphyry copper exploration in a wide variety of environments. Continuing studies with SO2, the halogens, rhenium, mercury, precious metals, the composition of fluid inclusions and the major elements associated with alteration are expected to lead to the identification of additional new techniques which will be of value in future exploration. Gamma-ray spectrometry and infrared spectroradiometry show considerable promise for airborne or satellite survey. Other remote sensing and atmogeochemical techniques which may be applicable to the reconnaissance for porphyry copper-type mineralization are being studied or are in the development stage. Experience to date clearly indicates that geochemical methods have application at all stages in the exploration for and development of porphyry copper-type deposits. Anticipated future developments are expected to increase and improve this application.  相似文献
