A comprehensive study of meteorological, hydrological, limnological and sedimentological conditions in the watersheds of density-stratified (meromictic) lakes around Taconite Inlet, Northern Ellesmere Island, N.W.T., Canada was carried out from 1990–1992. Lakes C1 and C2 contain seawater trapped by isostatic uplift as the former embayments became isolated from the sea. These lakes, and Lake C3, contain varved sediments which provide an annually resolvable paleoclimatic record. By studing the major systems influencing sedimentation in one of these lakes (Lake C2) a better understanding of the climatic controls on varve formation, and hence on the paleoclimatic signal in the varved sediment record, was obtained. The varves of Lake C2 provide a proxy record of summer temperature for the region.This is the first in a series of papers published in this issue on the Taconite Inlet Lakes Project. A multiple core study was conducted on laminated minerogenic sediments from Lake C2, Northern Ellesmere Island, Canadian High Arctic. Lateral persistence, distal thinning, variation in grain size of these laminations as well as present-day processes of highly seasonal sediment transfer into the lake basin suggest that clastic varves have been formed. Sedimentation rates based on 210Pb dating agree well with sedimentation rates based on lamination counts giving further evidence that laminations are annual. Errors in varve counting were reduced from 12% to < 2% using the multi-core approach of cross-correlating all records. Varved sediments are occasionally interrupted by thick coarse-grained layers, which are interpreted as deposits of turbidity currents and may be related to extremely high discharge events and slope failures of the delta front. Micro-laminated sediments spanning the last two centuries were studied in detail. Suspension settling is the dominant process of deposition depending upon stream discharge which is controlled by nival melt and summer temperatures. Application of varve chronology thus allows to use lamination thickness measurements as source of high resolution proxy data for palaeoclimatic reconstruction.This is the fifth in a series of papers published in this issue on the Taconite Inlet Lakes Project. Environmental changes of the last 9,300 years were reconstructed by geochemical and pollen analyses of a 14-m-long, laminated
sediment core from Lago Aleixo, south-eastern Brazil. Fossil pollen assemblages indicate open savannah vegetation (campo cerrado)
and gallery forests until approximately 6,900 cal. BP. During that time, siderite laminae were deposited under anoxic conditions
at the lake bottom. Then, increased rainfall and a shorter annual dry period allowed gallery forests and semi-deciduous forests
to expand, leading to more closed cerrado vegetation. High-intensity rainfall events during this period are recorded as peaks
in K and Ti concentrations. The sediment facies during this period consists of alternating layers of diatoms and minerogenic
matter. C/N ratios imply that algae and perhaps soils, too, were the main contributors to sediment organic matter. Biogenic
silica and δ13Corg variations indicate increasing primary productivity, which was related to higher nutrient flux from intensified leaching
of soils, as shown by rising K/Al ratios. Around 800 cal. BP, a closed, semi-deciduous forest developed under present-day
climate conditions. Slope stabilization diminished erosion processes in the catchment and caused reduced input of minerogenic
matter into the basin. Human impact is evident in the topmost homogeneous sediments, as removal of the stabilizing forest
cover amplified soil erosion. The continuous trend to more humid conditions during the Holocene probably reflects increased
influence of the Amazon Basin as a moisture source. We conclude that the Lago Aleixo sediment archive was a sensitive recorder
of environmental dynamics in tropical South America, which were mainly controlled by changes in precipitation patterns. 相似文献

Sacrower See is a eutrophic lake with annually laminated sediments extending back to A.D. 1868. Analysis of annual layers
revealed multi-decadal periods of distinct diatom assemblages at A.D. 1868–1875, 1876–1940, 1941–1978, and 1979–2000. Detrended
correspondence analysis performed on individual seasonal sediment layers showed decadal-scale patterns of turnover in the
diatom flora. The spring–summer layers showed higher sample scores until the early 1960s, after which the differences with
the autumn–winter layers became smaller. Rates-of-change analysis revealed that the seasonal variability in diatom assemblages
was higher than the annual changes. Summer diatom rates of change over the period A.D. 1894–1960 was on average higher than
for winter, whereas between the 1960s and 1970s the winter rates of change became higher than the summer ones. Redundancy
Analyses showed that seasonal temperatures and wind strength were significant explanatory variables for diatom assemblages
in both annual and seasonal layers. These results suggest that meteorological changes indirectly affected diatom assemblages
via the mixing regime of the lake. A comparison of the diatom rates of change with the amplitude of inter-annual climate change
shows a statistically significant correlation for the spring-summer layers in the period of A.D. 1963–2000, showing that the
sensitivity of diatom assemblages to meteorological changes has varied over the past century, with a stronger effect on diatoms

Sedimentological proof and dating of the Early Holocene volcanic eruption of Ulmener Maar (Vulkaneifel,Germany) 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:2

A minerogeniclayer occurs in early postglacial organic sediments from five maar lakes (West Eifel Volcanic Field, Germany). The mineralogy and stratigraphic position of this tephra suggests that it is related to the youngest German volcano, Ulmener Maar, nearby. Radiocarbon dating of wood from the base of the Ulmener Maar Tephra at two locations provide ages in agreement with an accelerator mass spectrometer 14C date for the minerogenic layer from sediments of Lake Holzmaar situated 13 km south-west of Ulmener Maar. The mean radiocarbon age is 9 560 years BP. Dating by varve chronology provides an age of 10017 years VT (varve time in years before 1950) or 10 895 years corrected VT. Based on palynology the Ulmener Maar Tephra was deposited at the end of the Preboreal. High values of natural remnant magnetization intensity, typical of pyroclastic material, confirm that this minerogenic layer differs in composition from other clastic deposits of the sedimentary record. Geochemical analyses reveal increased values of total trace elements for the Laacher See Tephra and Ulmener Maar Tephra. An isopach map based on thickness variations of the Ulmener Maar Tephra at five investigated maar lakes indicates that the tephra was mainly transported to the south west. 相似文献

The accumulation of heavy metals and trace elements has been investigated in a well laminated sequence of Holocene and late
Pleistocene lake sediments composed of diatomaceous gyttja, tuff and silt and clay sediments. Varve chronology of the annually
deposited gyttja yielded a continuous high-resolution time sequence and allowed the absolute age dating of the sediment.
Fluxes of elements remained largely uniform from the late Pleistocene into the Holocene (12 867–2 364 VT years ago; VT: varve
time, years before 1950). Higher trace element and heavy metal fluxes occur from 2 322 to 862 VT years ago and reached their
maxima in the uppermost sediments (<845 VT years ago). These increasing element fluxes correlate with increasing inputs of
clastic material. The changing accumulation rates are the result of elevated soil erosion in the lake catchment caused by
human settlement, deforestation and agricultural activities. Thus disturbances of the natural geochemical cycles of the Holzmaar
region have occurred since the beginning of the Iron Age and especially since the beginning of the Middle Ages.

We studied the internal lake processes that control the spatial distribution and characteristics of modern sediments at the
ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) deep drilling site in Laguna Potrok Aike, southern Patagonia,
Argentina. Sediment distribution patterns were investigated using a dense grid of 63 gravity cores taken throughout the lake
basin and 40 additional shoreline samples. Analysis of the surficial sediment distribution points to distinct internal depositional
dynamics induced by wind-driven lake internal currents. Distribution maps illustrate that the spatial characteristics of analysed
variables are linked to high erosional wave activity. Persistent wave action and littoral erosion along all shores, especially
the eastern shore, is caused by prevailing Southern Hemispheric Westerlies. Several sediment variables (grain size, benthic
diatoms, total inorganic carbon and calcium) indicate re-suspension of littoral sediment followed by re-distribution to profundal
accumulation areas near the eastern shore. Variations within the catchment influence sediment characteristics in the north-eastern
bay. That area is characterized by different mineralogical and sedimentological conditions as well as greater accumulation
of pollen, inorganic carbon and diatoms. These findings are related to the influence of episodic inflow into this bay. Spatial
differences in stable isotope values throughout the lake suggest that ephemeral tributaries around the lake basin may also
contribute to the detected spatial sediment variations. 相似文献

The climatic signal in varved sediments from Lake C2, northern Ellesmere Island, Canada 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Annually-laminated clastic sediments preserve a high resolution proxy record of paleoclimate, provided that allochthonous sedimentation represents a response to meteorological forcing of watershed sediment transfer. Here, we demonstrate this linkage, and illustrate a calibration process using the most recent 40 years of a varve record from Lake C2 (82°50 N; 78°00 W), three years of field measurements, and meteorological data for 1951–92 from nearby AES weather station Alert. Field measurements were used to correlate proxies of the energy available for snowmelt (e.g. air temperature) and daily suspended sediment discharge (SSQ). Our calibration was extended through use of weather data from Alert. Both mean daily air temperature at Echo, and daily SSQ, were well correlated with air temperature at 600 m above Alert, as obtained from the 1200 Z (0800 LST) rawinsonde sounding. Accordingly, we used pooled 1990 and 1992 Alert 600 m data to predict the lagged daily sediment discharge into Lake C2 (adj. r
2=0.43). Daily values were summed each year in order to produce an annual series of predicted sediment transfer to the lake. The original varve chronology was based on eight sediment cores recovered from the deep basin of the lake (>80 m). Although low-frequency fluctuations of the varve and predicted SSQ series agree, slight tuning of the varve record optimizes the correlation between them. Adjustments were based on examination of weather data for specific years, reexamination of sediment core thin sections, and by aligning fluctuations in the two series which closely matched. Although the original chronology is reasonably well correlated with 600 m temperatures at Alert (for JJA mean, r=0.41, significant at 0.01), the adjusted chronology is both better correlated and contains a more precise climate signal (r=0.54 for July mean, significant at 0.01). This is the first calibrated varve record produced from Arctic lake sediments, and demonstrates that varves from Lake C2 contain a paleoclimatic record. We believe the post-facto manipulations required to produce the adjusted varve chronology are reasonable given the uncertainties inherent in varve counting, and the lack of any independent corroborating chronostratigraphic markers.This is the ninth in a series of papers published in this issue on the Taconite Inlet Lakes Project. The volcanogenic lake Laguna Potrok Aike, Santa Cruz, Argentina, reveals an unprecedented continuous high resolution climatic record for the steppe regions of southern Patagonia. With the applied multi-proxy approach rapid climatic changes before the turn of the first millennium were detected followed by medieval droughts which are intersected by moist and/or cold periods of varying durations and intensities. The total inorganic carbon content was identified as a sensitive lake level indicator. This proxy suggests that during the late Middle Ages (ca. AD 1230–1410) the lake level was rather low representing a signal of the Medieval Climate Anomaly in southeastern Patagonia. At the beginning of the Little Ice Age the lake level rose considerably staying on a high level during the whole period. Subsequently, the lake level lowered again in the course of the 20th century. 相似文献
