A 20cm

CCD mosaic camera has been especially built to search for dark galactic halo objects by the gravitational microlensing effect. The sensitive area is made of 16 edge-buttable CCDs developped by Thomson-CTS, with 23×23 µm

pixels. The 35 kg camera housing and mechanical equipment is presented. The associated electronics and data acquisition system are described in a separate paper. The camera resides at the focal plane of a 40 cm, f/10, Ferson reflector. The instrument has been in operation since December 1991 at the La Silla Observatory (ESO). 相似文献

Proposed to both the French and the European Space Agency as one possible small mission, SPICE is a project for a dedicated small satellite for a near-IR spectroscopic all-sky survey. The instrument would cover the spectral range 1.8 - 3.6µm, possibly extended to 1.8 - 7µm, at a resolution of 100, with pixels of 1 arc-min. The excellent sensitivity (0.02 MJy sr-1) results from: i) the quasi-zero level of background due to the efficient passive cooling of the whole experiment; ii) the use of large format arrays; iii) the non-stop observing mode (drift-scanning). The spectral domain, complementing the one of ISO, partially opaque from the ground, is specially rich in spectral features tracing stars and all components of the Interstellar Medium (molecular, atomic and ionized gas, dust). With a cooling below 80 K of the focal instrument, then it becomes possible to consider doubling the spectral domain and to cover the whole 1.8 - 7µm range. 相似文献

Conclusion To summarize, the readout and the control system of the CCD mosaic camera are running since December 1991 at the La Silla Observatory (ESO). The overall performance of the camera has been good. About 12000 pictures (data and flat-fields) have been successfully registered up to now. We will report in the near future preliminary scientific results of the EROS experiment. 相似文献

We present a new diagnostic diagram based on ISOCAMspectra (5-16 m) to distinguish the emission inducedby the active galactic nucleus (AGN) from that associated with thestar formation activity. This diagnostic based on the mid-IRcontinuum and the Unidentified Infrared Band (UIB) intensity allowsus to estimate the relative importance of the three components (HIIregions, diffuse/photo-dissociation regions (PDRs), and AGN) contained ingalaxy mid-infrared emission. In AGN spectra, we confirm the absenceof UIBs presumably photodissociated by the X-UV radiation field. Inaddition, a non-negligible continuum below 9 m commonlyassociated with emission from hot dust is present in AGNs. Adiagnostic diagram derived from these two results can be used fordetecting obscured AGNs embedded in a large concentration of dust. 相似文献

We present mid-infrared images and spectra of Arp 10 and Arp 118, two collisional ring galaxies observed as part of the ISOCAM
GT program CAMACTIV (P.I.: I.F. Mirabel). The observations reveal the distribution of hot dust in the galaxies and enable
us to probe the mechanisms responsible for the heating of the ISM. Unlike the peculiar mid-infrared colours recently discovered
in the Cartwheel, the prime example of a collisional ring, Arp 10 has colours typical of those found inspiral arms of late
type spirals. Similarly for Arp 118 (NGC 1144),the mid-infrared emission is associated with the regions of star formation
in the ring. Moreover, a hot continuum in the 5.1–6.7 μmrange, which is a typical mid-infrared signature of an AGN, is clearly
detected from the Seyfert 2 nucleus of the galaxy.

In this paper, we present ISOCAM mid-IR broad band images and spectraof three well known interacting galaxies. These are the prototypicalultraluminous IR galaxy Arp 220, and NGC 6240, which are classifiedas major mergers resulting from a collision of two disk galaxies ofapproximately equal mass, and the prime example of collisional ringgalaxies, the Cartwheel. Our observations provide a new powerful tooland shed some more light to the properties of the hot dust and starformation in interacting galaxies. 相似文献

We have conducted a survey of early-type galaxies using the ISOCAMinstrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO)in order to probe their dustcontent. We present Mid-Infrared photometric properties for a sampleof 20 galaxies observed at 4.5, 7 and 15 μ$m. Using diagnosticcolor-color diagrams, we can delineate the different Mid-Infrared emissioncontribution from evolved stars, non-thermal emission from AGNs/radiosources, and dust.Detailed modelling of the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED)is performed showing that even though theemission from the evolved stellar population may account for a large part of the Mid-Infrared output, emission from the hot dust and the aromatic hydrocarbon bands (e.g. PAHs) is the main contributorin many cases. Modelling of the surface brightness distribution is alsomade, showing that most of the galaxies follow a de Vaucouleurs profile. The physical nature and spatial distribution of the dust that we findfrom our studies of early-type galaxies will help to constrainthe origin of the dust in those galaxies. 相似文献

We present a new set of diagnostics which allow us to trace and classify in a statistical manner the mid-IR emission produced
by active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star-forming regions. We construct a diagram based on the strength of the unidentified
infrared band (UIB)at 6.2 μm, and the intensity of the continuum at short (6 μm) and long wavelengths (15 μm). We interpret
the integrated mid-IR emission in late-type galaxies as resulting from three individual contributions coming from HII regions,
diffuse/photodissociation regions (PDRs), and AGN. Based on this assumption, our diagnostic diagram provides a quantitative
estimate of the AGN and starburst contribution to an observed mid-IR spectrum. We show that UIB emission is very faint or
absent in regions harbouring intense and hard radiation fields as in the case of AGN or ‘pure’ HII starburst regions where
UIB carriers can be destroyed by photodissociation. However, contrary to starburst spectra, typical AGN spectra present a
strong hot continuum below 9 μm originating from hot dust heated by the AGN radiation field. An extrapolation of this diagnostic
towards other mid-IR observations should improve our knowledge of the AGN/starburst connection.

Summary A brief report on the instrumentation for observations, at the ground, in the 9 to 11.6 spectral region, in the absorption of solar radiation through the terrestrial atmosphere and of the results thus obtained for the H2O, O3 and HNO3 molecules. The observations have been made at Montlouis, in the south of France, at 1650 m above sea-level. Here the pollution of the atmosphere is very low because there is no industry and very little local domestic activity. The chief aim ofM. Dionne [1], who is mainly responsible for this work, was to study the weak absorption of the terrestrial atmosphere around and beyond 10 , so observation had to be made with large air masses. For if there were excess water vapour the very weak lines might disappear through the background, owing to the water vapour itself; hence the need to observe during cold weather. Great air masses and cold weather can be obtained only on fine winter days, at about sunset. The configuration of Montlouis makes it difficult to observe at sunrise, so the time of observation was very limited.Laboratoire de Physique Moléculaire et d'Optique Atmosphérique, Station de Montlouis. 相似文献
