Data on the relationship of the surface wind to the geostrophic wind at Porton Down, Salisbury Plain, are presented for various stability conditions and analysed in the light of the Rossbynumber similarity theory. For near-neutral conditions, the geostrophic drag coefficients for geostrophic wind speeds 5 to 15 m s-1 are close to those found by other workers but at higher speeds the values are low. Comparisons of geostrophic and radar wind speeds for ⋍900-m height, suggest that undetectably small mean cyclonic curvatures of the trajectories of the air are responsible for this departure. A value of the geostrophic drag coefficient for the open sea at wind speeds around 8 m s-1 (neutral conditions) is deduced from recent observations of the drag in relation to the surface wind, combined with the ratios of 900-mb radar wind to surface wind obtained from the North Atlantic weather ship data tabulations of Findlater et al. Estimates of the geostrophic drag coefficient and the Rossby similarity functions, A and B obtained from data collected by an instrumented aircraft over the sea are presented. The average value of the geostrophic drag coefficient is 0.027 and is independent of the geostrophic windspeed. The dependence of the similarity functions A and B on boundary-layer parameters is investigated. The function A is found to depend on baroclinicity parameters, while B depends on the parameter u */fh (where u * is the surface friction velocity, f is the Coriolis parameter, and h is the boundary-layer depth). Using the geostrophic drag coefficient found here and the results of surface drag coefficient studies, a relationship between geostrophic windspeed and surface windspeed is obtained which shows good agreement with empirical data.  相似文献

Bulk transfer coefficients were evaluated from eddy correlation flux measurements on a fixed pier during onshore winds. The mean values are C D = 1.69 × 10-3, C H = 2.58 × 10-3 and C E = 1.51 × 10-3. The drag coefficient, C D, gradually increases with wind speed but C H and C E are independent of wind speed. According to theory and empirical formulas based on experimental results over flat grassland, the transfer coefficients should gradually increase with increasing instability. This is confirmed experimentally in the stable region in our case. However, the drag coefficient appears to decrease with increasing instability, which is against the theoretical result. A stability dependence is not clearly observed for C H or C E.  相似文献

The relationship between geostrophic, Ekman-layer, and surface-layer flow is explored. Formalized limit solutions for each layer are developed; together they form a continuous solution for the semi-infinite flow over a surface. These classical solutions are re-derived and related, to prepare for a two-layer composite boundarylayer solution with patching criteria. The patching process yields a resistance law which indicates a correspondence between the stress and the geostrophic flow deviation involving a similarity relation with two arbitrary parameters.  相似文献

When applied to a sea surface, shortcomings are noted for the ordinary classification of drag conditions at rigid underlying surfaces according to the Reynolds roughness number Re s . It is shown that in the case of mobile underlying surfaces, it would be more natural to use the dynamical classification of drag conditions according to the order of magnitude of the ratio ( = /) of the momentum flux toward the waves ( w) to the viscous momentum flux through the surface ( w). The relevant estimates of for the main stages of development of the wind waves indicate that the observed values of the drag coefficient of the sea surface correspond to the case of underdeveloped roughness.  相似文献

This paper examines the practical importance of stability, baroclinicity, and acceleration in the bulk ABL similarity formulations, in light of the random errors inherent in field measurements. This is done by propagating the measurement uncertainties through a theoretical model for the bulk ABL similarity functionsA 0 andB 0, under a range of assumed (but always unstable) conditions. It is shown that random measurement errors and acceleration effects may overwhelm most effects of baroclinicity and stability, once conditions are at least slightly unstable. Because of this, it is hard to discern a clear functional dependence ofA 0 andB 0 on degree of instability. Thus, for a given value ofh i/z0, whereh i is the inversion height andz 0 is the surface roughness, the geostrophic drag coefficient, which depends onA 0 andB 0, and weakly onh i/z0, may also be taken to be nearly independent of degree of instability.  相似文献

Turbulent fluxes have been measured in the atmospheric surface layer from a boom extending upwind from the Dutch offshore research platform Meetpost Noordwijk (MPN) during HEXMAX (Humidity Exchange over the Sea Main Experiment) in October–November, 1986. We started out to study eddy flux of water vapour, but discrepancies among simultaneous measurements made with three different anemometers led us to develop methods to correct eddy correlation measurements of wind stress for flow distortion by nearby objects. We then found excellent agreement among the corrected wind stress data sets from the three anemometers on the MPN boom and with eddy correlation measurements from a mast on a tripod. Inertial-dissipation techniques gave reliable estimates of wind stress from turbulence spectra, both at MPN and at a nearby ship. The data cover a range of wave ages and the results yield new insights into the variation of sea surface wind stress with sea state; two alternative formulas are given for the nondimensional surface roughness as a function of wave age.  相似文献

Measurements from the Baltic Sea and a wind-over-wave coupled model are used to study the wave impact on the sea drag. The study has been carried out for different wave conditions, namely a pure wind-sea, following-swell/ mixed sea and cross-swell/ mixed sea. Measurements reveal the fact that the sea drag is dependent on the sea-state. In stationary conditions and in the absence of severe cross-swell, swell reduces drag compared to wind-sea at the same wind speed. The cross-swell enhances the drag as compared to the following-swell case and the magnitude of the drag coefficient is increased with increasing the angle of swell propagation to the wind. It is shown that the agreement between the model results and measurements is good for pure wind-sea and stationary mixed-sea cases. Discrepancies occur at light winds, where most of the data represent pure swell conditions. During these pure swell conditions the data are characterized by a large variation of the drag coefficient. The variation is caused by mesoscale variability in the stress co-spectra, wind-cross-swell effects and nonstationarity in the wave and wind fields not represented in the model.  相似文献

Three recent experiments allow evaluation of the bulk transfer coefficients for momentum, water vapour and sensible heat over water bodies of different sizes. As part of a study of evaporation rates from a swamp, measurements of latent and sensible heat fluxes were made over Lake Wyangan in southern N.S.W., Australia. This lake is of several kilometers diameter. In a later experiment, Reynolds stress and sensible heat transfer were measured from a natural-gas platform standing in Bass Strait, south of mainland Australia. The most recent experiment involved the direct measurement of each of these turbulent fluxes from a fixed tower erected in Lake Michigan, U.S.A.Perhaps the most important of the results is the finding that drag coefficients measured over Bass Strait are not significantly different from those over Lake Michigan, despite the obvious differences in depth, fetch, and hence surface wave structure. At both locations, drag coefficients are found to increase slightly with increasing wind speed, while at low wind speeds they are not significantly different from those corresponding to aerodynamic smoothness.Near-neutral bulk transfer coefficients for sensible heat and for water vapour are found to be similar. An average value of about 1.4 × 10–3 is obtained.It is emphasized that stability effects should be considered in any discussion of drag coefficients or bulk transfer coefficients. Large errors can result if near-neutrality is incorrectly assumed.  相似文献

Long-term data from diffuse and global irradiances were used to calculate direct beam irradiance which was used to determine three atmospheric turbidity coefficients (Linke T L , Ångström β and Unsworth–Monteith δ a ) at seven sites in Egypt in the period from 1981 to 2000. Seven study sites (Barrani, Matruh, Arish, Cairo, Asyut, Aswan and Kharga) have been divided into three categories: Mediterranean climate (MC), desert Nile climate (DNC) and urban climate (UC, Cairo). The indirect method (i.e., global irradiance minus diffuse irradiance) used here allows to estimate the turbidity coefficients with an RMSE% ≤20 % (for β, δ a and T L ) and ~30 % (for β) if compared with those estimated by direct beam irradiance and sunphotometeric data, respectively. Monthly averages of T L , β and δ a show seasonal variations with mainly maxima in spring at all stations, due to Khamsin depressions coming from Sahara. Secondary maxima is observed in summer and autumn at DNC and MC (Barrani and Arish) stations in summer due to dust haze which prevails during that season and at UC (Cairo) in autumn, due to the northern extension of the Sudan monsoon trough, which is accompanied by small-scale depressions with dust particles. The mean annual values of β, δ a , and T L (0.216, 0.314, and 4.6, respectively) are larger in Cairo than at MC stations (0.146, 0.216, and 3.8, respectively) and DNC stations (0.153, 0.227, and 3.8, respectively). Both El-Chichon and Mt. Pinatubo eruptions were examined for all records data at MC, UC and DNC stations. The overburden caused by Mt. Pinatubo’s eruption was larger than El-Chichon’s eruption and overburden for β, and T L at DNC stations (0.06, and 0.58 units, respectively) was more pronounced than that at MC (0.02, and 0.26, respectively) and UC (0.05 and 0.52 units, respectively) stations. The annual variations in wind speed and turbidity parameters show high values for both low and high wind speed at all stations. The wind directions have a clear effect on atmospheric turbidity, and consequently, largest turbidities occur when the wind carries aerosols from the main particle sources, such as industrial particle sources around Cairo or to some extent from the Sahara surrounding all study stations.  相似文献

Among the regression-based algorithms for deriving SST from satellite measurements, regionally optimized algorithms normally perform better than the corresponding global algorithm. In this paper,three algorithms are considered for SST retrieval over the East Asia region (15°-55°N, 105°-170°E),including the multi-channel algorithm (MCSST), the quadratic algorithm (QSST), and the Pathfinder algorithm (PFSST). All algorithms are derived and validated using collocated buoy and Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS-5) observations from 1997 to 2001. An important part of the derivation and validation of the algorithms is the quality control procedure for the buoy SST data and an improved cloud screening method for the satellite brightness temperature measurements. The regionally optimized MCSST algorithm shows an overall improvement over the global algorithm, removing the bias of about -0.13℃ and reducing the root-mean-square difference (rmsd) from 1.36℃ to 1.26℃. The QSST is only slightly better than the MCSST. For both algorithms, a seasonal dependence of the remaining error statistics is still evident. The Pathfinder approach for deriving a season-specific set of coefficients, one for August to October and one for the rest of the year, provides the smallest rmsd overall that is also stable over time.  相似文献

The structure of the atmospheric surface layer above the sea is analysed from aircraft turbulence measurements. The data are issued from two experiments performed in 1990 above the Mediterranean sea: Crau and PYREX, and correspond to moderately unstable conditions and to wind velocities ranging from 6 to 20 m/s. Low-altitude straight and level runs were used to compute the variances of the wind components, as well as of the temperature and moisture. Their dependence on the stability index —z/L is analysed. The turbulent fluxes of momentum, sensible heat and latent heat, calculated by the eddy-correlation technique, are used to estimate the neutral bulk coefficients: drag coefficient, Stanton number and Dalton number. The neutral drag coefficient clearly exhibits a dependence on the windspeed, which could be well fitted by the Charnock relation, with a constant of 0.012.  相似文献

Abstract

Measurement of net radiation at sea is very difficult whereas, the measurement of global solar radiation or total downward radiation is much less complicated. Hence the dependencies of net radiation on global solar radiation and total downward radiation are studied from hourly Canadian GATE data.

Results show that net radiation can be estimated from measurements of incoming solar radiation or total downward radiation by empirical formulae to an accuracy comparable to that of measurement. However, these formulae must be established from measurements.  相似文献

The mass accommodation coefficient HONO of gaseous nitrous acid on water surfaces has been determined in a cooperation between the Universities of Strasbourg and Bonn. The droplet train technique (Strasbourg) yielded 0.04<HONO<0.09 for an estimated surface temperature of 245 K, while the liquid jet technique (Bonn) yielded 0.03<HONO<0.15 for a surface temperature of 297 K. The uncertainty ranges allow for experimental scatter and estimated uncertainties in diffusion coefficients. The same HONO source and analytical equipment were used for both experiments, which were run in parallel. The results indicate that the exchange rate of HONO between atmospheric water droplets and interstitial air is not inhibited by interfacial resistance.  相似文献
