A database for the entire catalog of the Second Byurakan Survey (SBS) galaxies is presented. It contains new measurements of their optical parameters and additional information taken from the literature and other databases. The measurements were made using Ipg (near-infrared), Fpg (red), and Jpg (blue) band images from photographic sky survey plates obtained by the Palomar Schmidt telescope and extracted from the STScI Digital Sky Survey (DSS). The database provides accurate coordinates, morphological type, spectral and activity classes, apparent magnitudes and diameters, axial ratios and position angles, as well as number counts of neighboring objects in a circle of radius 50 kpc. The total number of individual SBS objects in the database is now 1676. The 188 Markarian galaxies that were re-discovered by SBS are not included in this database. We also include redshifts that are now available for 1576 SBS objects, as well as 2MASS infrared magnitudes for 1117 SBS galaxies.  相似文献

This is a statistical study of galaxies with a UV excess. A sample of 702 Kazarian galaxies (KG) is used. The KGs are identified with objects from the MAPS, IRAS FSC, IRAS PSC, and NVSS catalogs. The O and E magnitudes are known for more than 92% of the KGs. It is shown that the KG sample is complete up to 16m.0 in the blue and to 16m.5 in the red. More than 36% of the KGs are identified with infrared (IR) sources at wavelengths of 12, 25, 60, and 100 m. Calculations of the far IR (FIR) luminosities show that 4% of the KGs are strong FIR emitters (LFIR ≥ 1011 L). More than 32% of the KGs have been identified as radio sources at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. A determination of the radio luminosities shows that the sample of KGs with known radial velocities include one powerful, LR ≥ 1025 W/Hz, radio object (Kaz 273) which is a BL Lac object. A close correlation (r=0.93) is bound between the FIR and radio luminosities for galaxies with a UV excess. An examination of the relationship between the FIR and radio luminosities for galaxies in different spectral classes shows that the correlation coefficient is higher (r=0.99) and the slope of the fit curve is larger (a=1.18) for Seyfert galaxies. Calculations of the logarithm of the ratio of the FIR and radio fluxes indicate that the sample includes 4 KGs with a radio excess, while there are none with an IR excess. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 3, pp. 369–379 (August 2007).  相似文献

The positions of 46 γ-ray burst sources on the sky are used to show that the majority of these objects either originate in very distant regions with redshifts ?30000 km s?1 or within ?0.5β of the Sun; where β is the scale-height of the parent population perpendicular to the galactic disc. An origin of the majority of γ-ray bursts in the more distant parts of the galactic disc, the galactic nuclear bulge, the Virgo supercluster, in galaxies withm pg<18 and rich in Abell clusters of distance classes 0 to 4 is excluded by the data.  相似文献

The excess number of blue galaxies at faint magnitudes is a subject of much controversy. Recent Hubble Space Telescope results have revealed a plethora of galaxies with peculiar morphologies tentatively identified as the evolving population. We report the results of optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry of a sample of faint HST galaxies from the Medium Deep Survey to ascertain the physical properties of the faint morphological populations. We find four principal results. First, the population of objects classified as 'peculiar' are intrinsically luminous in the optical ( M B  ∼ −19). Secondly these systems tend to be strong sources of [O  II ] line luminosity. Thirdly the optical–infrared colours of the faint population (a) confirm the presence of a population of compact   blue galaxies and (b) show the stellar populations of irregular/peculiar galaxies encompass a wide range in age. Finally a surface-brightness comparison with the local galaxy sample of Frei et al. shows that these objects are not of anomalously low surface brightness, rather we find that all morphological classes have evolved to a higher surface brightness at higher redshifts ( z  > 0.3).  相似文献

Results from a statistical study of Kazarian galaxies and the objects surrounding them are presented. It is shown that: (1) the sample of Kazarian galaxies up to 16m.0 is complete. (2) Roughly 35.7% of the Kazarian galaxies are members of clusters, 14.0% of groups, and 13.6% of binary systems, while 36.7% are single galaxies. (3) Of the 580 Kazarian galaxies, roughly 61.2% are infrared, 8.8% radio, and 2.8% x-ray sources. (4) The relative numbers of Kazarian galaxies for complete samples of I, R, and X in the different groups are systematically higher than the corresponding numbers for samples of all Kazarian galaxies.  相似文献

In order to find the physical parameters which determine the accuracy of pho- tometric redshifts, we compare the spectroscopic and photometric redshifts (photo-z's) for a large sample of ~ 80 000 SDSS-2MASS galaxies. Photo-z's in this paper are es- timated by using the artificial neural network photometric redshift method (ANNz). For a subset of~40000 randomly selected galaxies, we find that the photometric redshift recovers the spectroscopic redshifi distribution very well with rms of 0.016. Our main results are as follows: (1) Using magnitudes directly as input parameters produces more accurate photo-z's than using colors; (2) The inclusion of 2MASS (3, H, Ks) bands does not improve photo-z's significantly, which indicates that near infrared data might not be important for the low-redshift sample; (3) Adding the concentration index (essentially the steepness of the galaxy brightness profile) as an extra input can improve the photo-z's estimation up to~10 percent; (4) Dividing the sample into early- and late-type galaxies by using the concentration index, normal and abnormal galaxies by using the emission line flux ratios, and red and blue galaxies by using color index (g - r), we can improve the accuracy of photo-z's significantly; (5) Our analysis shows that the outliers (where there is a big difference between the spectroscopic and photometric redshifts) are mainly correlated with galaxy types, e.g., most outliers are late-type (blue) galaxies.  相似文献

The results of a statistical investigation of bright galaxies with a UV excess are given. The data obtained for them are compared with those for normal galaxies. A list of bright galaxies (mpg ≤14m.5 ) with a UV excess has been compiled, numbering 461. Their absolute stellar magnitudes and average geometrical linear diameters were determined. The relationships between Mpg and log D are given for galaxies with a UV excess and normal galaxies. The graphs of the relationships are expressed by second-degree equations. It is shown that the UV evolutionary stage of the galaxies has no influence on the relationship between Mpg and log D. A correlation between redshifts (z) and apparent magnitudes (V) (Hubble relation) of Quasi Stellar Objects (QSOs) has long been sought. Such a correlation exists for galaxies whose redshifts are of cosmological origin. However, a plot of the two quantities representing the Hubble diagram for QSOs exhibits, in general, a wild scatter. This raises the question whether redshifts of QSOs are cosmological. On the other hand, most luminous QSOs in groups, and subsamples with particular properties, have been reported to show the Hubble relation. In the present paper, we analyse all optically non-variable QSOs in a comprehensive sample. In our analysis we grouped the objects into certain intervals of apparent magnitudes. Correlations obtained between redshifts and magnitudes are all statistically robust. Also, the Hubble relation in the usual formV = 5 logz +C is obeyed very convincingly for QSOs withV < 19.5.  相似文献

We have discovered a population of extremely red galaxies at z  ≃ 1.5 which have apparent stellar ages of ≳ 3 Gyr, based on detailed spectroscopy in the rest-frame ultraviolet. In order for galaxies to have existed at the high collapse redshifts indicated by these ages, there must be a minimum level of power in the density fluctuation spectrum on galaxy scales. This paper compares the required power with that inferred from other high-redshift populations: damped Lyα absorbers and Lyman-limit galaxies at z  ≃ 3.2. If the collapse redshifts for the old red galaxies are in the range z c ≃ 6–8, there is general agreement between the various tracers on the required inhomogeneity on 1-Mpc scales. This level of small-scale power requires the Lyman-limit galaxies to be approximately ν ≃ 3.0 fluctuations, implying a very large bias parameter b  ≃ 6. If the collapse redshifts of the red galaxies are indeed in the range z c = 6–8 required for power spectrum consistency, their implied ages at z  ≃ 1.5 are between 3 and 3.8 Gyr for essentially any model universe of current age 14 Gyr. The age of these objects as deduced from gravitational collapse thus provides independent support for the ages estimated from their stellar populations. Such early-forming galaxies are rare, and their contribution to the cosmological stellar density is consistent with an extrapolation to higher redshifts of the star formation rate measured at z  < 5; there is no evidence for a general era of spheroid formation at extreme redshifts.  相似文献

We analyse a high-redshift sample (0.4 < z < 0.5) of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 4 and their surrounding structures to explore the presence of alignment effects of these bright galaxies with neighbour objects. In order to avoid projection effects, we compute photometric redshifts for galaxies within 3  h −1 Mpc in projection of LRGs and calculate the relative angle between the LRG major axis and the direction to neighbours within 1000 km s−1. We find a clear signal of alignment between LRG orientations and the distribution of galaxies within 1.5  h −1 Mpc. The alignment effects are present only for the red population of tracers; LRG orientation is uncorrelated to the blue population of neighbour galaxies. These results add evidence to the alignment effects between primaries and satellites detected at low redshifts. We conclude that such alignments were already present at z ∼ 0.5.  相似文献

We present a multicolour catalogue of faint galaxies situated close to bright stars,   V ≲ 15  , with the aim of identifying high-redshift galaxies suitable for study with adaptive optics-equipped near-infrared imagers and spectrographs. The catalogue is constructed from archival calibration observations of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Faint Standard stars with the UKIRT Fast Track Imager (UFTI) camera on UKIRT. We have analysed the deepest 16 fields from the archive to provide a catalogue of galaxies brighter than   K ∼ 20.3  lying between 3 and 25 arcsec of the guide stars. We identify 111 objects in a total survey area of  8.7 arcmin2  . Of these, 87 are classified as galaxies based on their light profiles in our ∼0.5 arcsec median seeing K -band images. 12 of the galaxies have  ( J − K ) ≥ 2.0  consistent with them lying at high redshifts,   z ≳ 2  . These 12 very red galaxies have K -band magnitudes of   K = 18.1–20.1  and separations from the guide stars of 4–20 arcsec and hence are very well suited to adaptive optics studies to investigate their morphologies and spectral properties on sub-kpc scales. We provide coordinates and JHK photometry for all catalogued objects.  相似文献

A composite sample of NIR-selected galaxies having extended multicolor coverage has been used to probe the cosmological evolution of the blue luminosity function and of the stellar mass function. The bright fraction of the sample has spectroscopic redshifts, and the remaining fraction well-calibrated photometric redshifts. The resulting blue luminosity function shows an increasing brightening with redshift respect to the local luminosity function. Hierarchical CDM models predictions are in agreement only at low and intermediate redshifts but fail to reproduce the observed brightening at high redshifts (z ∼ 2–3). This brightening marks the epoch where starburst activity triggered by galaxy interactions could be an important physical mechanism for the galaxy evolution. At the same time the NIR galaxy sample has been used to trace the evolution of the cosmological stellar mass density up to ∼3. A clear decrease of the average mass density is apparent with a fraction ∼15% of the local value at z ∼ 3. UV bright star-forming galaxies are substancial contributors to the evolution of the stellar mass density. Although these results are globally consistent with Λ–CDM scenarios, they tend to underestimate the mass density produced by more massive galaxies present at z > 2.  相似文献

Images of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field are analyzed to obtain a catalog of galaxies for which the angular sizes, surface brightness, photometric redshifts, and absolute magnitudes are found. The catalog contains a total of about 4000 galaxies identified at a high signal-to-noise ratio, which allows the cosmological relations angular size—redshift and surface brightness-redshift to be analyzed. The parameters of the evolution of linear sizes and surface brightness of distant galaxies in the redshift interval 0.5–6.5 are estimated in terms of a grid of cosmological models with different density parameters (Ω V ; Ω m ). The distribution of photometric redshifts of galaxies is analyzed and possible superlarge inhomogeneities in the radial distribution of galaxies are found with scale lengths as large as 2000 Mpc.  相似文献

In order to see whether the study of redshift distribution in different classes of extragalactic objects, suspected of belonging to different phases in the evolutionary sequence of galaxies, helps in arriving at a possible picture of the evolutionary sequence of galaxies, histograms have been plotted between the number and the redshift for each of the five classes of extragalactic objects, namely, the QSOs, N-galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies and normal galaxies. It is found that: (i) the highest peaks in the five histograms occur at distinctly different redshifts in the order (Z peak)QSOs>(Z peak)N-galaxies>(Z peak)Seyfert galaxies>(Z peak)radio galaxies> (Z peak)normal galaxies and (ii) sufficient overlap occurs in the redshift ranges of (a) QSOs and N-galaxies, (b) N-galaxies and Seyfert galaxies, (c) Seyfert galaxies and radio galaxies and (d) radio galaxies and normal galaxies. These facts suggest that the extragalactic objects might be evolving in the sequence: QSOsN-galaxiesSeyfert galaxiesradio galaxiesnormal galaxies. Other independent evidences in support of such an evolutionary sequence have been given. Finally, various aspects of the problem associated with the picture of the evolutionary sequence of galaxies have been critically examined.  相似文献

We have identified 22 galaxies with photometric redshifts zph=5–7 in the northern and southern Hubble Space Telescope deep fields. An analysis of the images of these objects shows that they are asymmetric and very compact (~1 kpc) structures with high surface brightness and absolute magnitudes of MB≈?20m. The average spectral energy distribution for these galaxies agrees with the distributions for galaxies with active star formation. The star formation rate in galaxies with zph=5–7 was estimated from their luminosity at λ=1500 Å to be ~30 Myr?1. The spatial density of these objects is close to the current spatial density of bright galaxies. All the above properties of the distant galaxies considered are very similar to those of the so-called Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with z ~ 3–4. The similarity between the objects considered and LBGs suggests that at z ~6, we observe the progenitors of present-day galaxies that form duringmergers of protogalactic objects and that undergo intense starbursts.  相似文献

We present the radial velocities and blue, optical magnitudes for all of the galaxies within the Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey. This catalogue consists of ∼2500 galaxy redshifts to a limiting apparent magnitude of B J⋍17 mag, covering a ∼1500-deg2 area around the South Galactic Pole. The galaxies in this survey were selected from the Edinburgh/Durham Southern Galaxy Catalogue and were sampled, in order of apparent magnitude, at a rate of one galaxy in every three. The spectroscopy was performed at the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope in Australia using the FLAIR multi-object spectrograph. We show that our radial velocity measurements made with this instrument have an empirical accuracy of ±150 km s−1. The observational techniques and data reduction procedures used in the construction of this survey are also discussed. This survey demonstrates that the UKST can be used to make a three-dimensional map of the large-scale galaxy distribution, via a redshift survey to b J⋍17 mag, over a wide area of the sky.  相似文献

We have conducted observations of the environment around the z =2.15 radio-loud quasar 1550–269 in search of distant galaxies associated either with it or the z =2.09 C  iv absorber along its line of sight. Such objects will be distinguished by their red colours, R − K >4.5. We find five such objects in a 1.5 arcmin2 field around the quasar, with typical K ' magnitudes of ∼20.4 and no detected R -band emission. We also find a sixth object with K =19.6±0.3, and undetected at R , just two arcsec from the quasar. The nature of all these objects is currently unclear, and will remain so until we have determined their redshifts. We suggest that it is likely that they are associated with either the quasar or the C  iv absorber, in which case their properties might be similar to those of the z =2.38 red Ly α emitting galaxies discovered by Francis et al. The small separation between the quasar and the brightest of our objects suggests that it may be the galaxy responsible for the C  iv metal line absorption system. The closeness to the quasar and the red colour might have precluded similar objects from being uncovered in previous searches for emission from C  iv and damped absorbers.  相似文献

Photometric redshifts are used to determine the rest-frame luminosity function (LF) of both early- and late-type galaxies to  MB∼−17.6  for the cluster Cl 1601+42 at  z=0.54  . The total LF shows a steep faint-end slope   α ∼−1.4  , indicating the existence of a population of numerous dwarf galaxies. Luminous galaxies, with  MB≲−19.5  are mostly red, early-type galaxies, with a LF best described by a Gaussian. Faint galaxies are predominantly blue, late-type galaxies, well fitted by a Schechter function with   α ∼−1.7  . Compared with clusters at lower redshift, the steepening of the faint end starts at brighter magnitudes for Cl 1601+42, which may indicate a brightening of the present-day dwarf population relative to the giant population with increasing redshift. Early-type galaxies are centrally concentrated, and dominate the core region, implying that the radial gradient of early-type galaxies seen in local clusters is already established at  z∼0.5  . Bright, late-type galaxies are rare, consistent with a decrease in star formation in field galaxies as they are accreted on to the cluster, while faint, blue galaxies are evenly distributed across the cluster, except for a depletion in the core region. The blue fraction is  fB∼0.15  , which is somewhat lower than the Butcher–Oemler average at  z∼0.5  . The value of f B is found to increase with limiting magnitude and with radius from the centre.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the spectra of young objects contain an anomalous red shift which decreases and disappears as they evolve is considered. The possibility of detecting features of this anomalous red shift in the spectra of postquasar objects is considered under the assumption that a large fraction of the quasars are local objects ejected from galactic nuclei. It is argued that the anomalous red shift has a significant effect on the form of the observed luminosity function for the local population of galaxies, depleting it at faint magnitudes. This approach is used to examine the problem of excess blue galaxies.  相似文献

We present anon-general relativistic cosmological model with the following features.
  • All cosmological objects appear to be receding from each other. There are two mathematically distinct types of objects.
  • Type I objects have apparent magnitudes and apparent angular diameters comparable to those for standard FLRW models. Their redshifts are bounded; this bound is at least 3.
  • Type II objects can have unlimited redshifts. They appear significantly smaller than Type I objects with the same redshift, and (for redshifts greater than 1) appear brighter (and more so for larger redshifts).
  • The model is an extension of classical de Sitter spacetime in which the location of infinity is allowed to be relative.  相似文献
