Etch rates and etchable lengths of cosmic ray tracks in meteoritic crystals have been used by several workers to derive the charge spectrum of ancient cosmic rays. This is done by comparing the fossil cosmic ray track record with fresh accelerator-produced calibration tracks. These calibration tracks are generally produced at room temperature, while meteorites spend a high proportion of their lifetimes orbiting at large distances from the Sun ( 3–5 AU) and are, consequently, at much lower temperatures (typically 100–150 K) during most of their cosmic ray exposure ages. We have irradiated crystals of apatite, olivine, enstatite and diopside held at 77, 293, 473 and 573 K, with 2 MeV/nucleon81Br ions, and then etched them. We find that their track etching properties are dependent upon the temperature of the mineral during registration. The track etch velocity generally increases with registration temperature up to 300 or 500 K (the upper limit depending upon the type of crystal). Our results also indicate that the annealing sensitivity of fission tracks in fluorapatite may be influenced by the registration temperature. This temperature dependence has important implications not only for cosmic ray particle identification but also for fission track dating of meteorites in view of the fact that the meteorite parent bodies were at elevated temperatures at the beginning af their life when244Pu fission tracks were being generated abundantly.  相似文献

This paper concerns the identification of heavy ion tracks in minerals by measurements of track-etch rates and total etchable track lengths. With beams of Si, Cl, Ti, Fe, Zn and Kr at energies up to 10.35 MeV/nucleon we have irradiated nine minerals commonly used to study fossil cosmic ray tracks in meteorites and lunar samples. From our measurements of etched track length as a function of residual range, we have determined response curves for various minerals as a function of ionization rate, using the expression previously derived by Price, Fleischer and Moak. These curves increase smoothly with ionization rate instead of rising abruptly at some critical value as was previously thought. We have shown that the track etch rate concept accounts qualitatively for total etchable track length distributions, but that the positions of the peaks of different elements in these histograms occur at shorter lengths for fossil tracks than for fresh tracks. Our annealing data indicate that, at maximum lunar surface temperatures, tracks in olivine, orthopyroxenes and feldspars may be significantly shortened whereas tracks in clinopyroxenes will not be affected. We cite additional evidence that gradual rearrangement of radiation damage at ambient temperature makes the properties of fresh tracks and of ancient tracks different. It is thus not surprising that the histograms of fresh and fossil tracks do not match perfectly.  相似文献

The applicability of the method of uranium fission tracks was studied in a number of sheets from a muscovite of about 600 m.y. Diagrams for fission track density (ρ) versus the chemical etching time (tA), as well as the larger diameter of the transversal section (D) versus tA curves were constructed, and the uranium concentration and uniformity of distribution were calculated. Some samples were heated at different constant temperatures for various time intervals, and the features presented by the heated and unheated tracks were analysed. The conclusions can be applied to corrections in age determination of muscovites that suffered natural annealing effects.  相似文献

We describe a simple method for nearly isotropic revelation of fission tracks in zircon. The etchant is an equivolume mixture of 48% HF and 98% H2SO4; etching is carried out under pressure at 150° – 180°C. For fossil track densities above ~ 5 × 106, the etching time is strongly anticorrelated with track density. The total etchable fission fragment track length (2 fragments) is 11 ± 0.5 μm. The length distribution is sharply peaked; the standard deviation in different samples is ± (0.7 – 0.8) μm. Thermal annealing studies indicate a lower activation energy for track fading than was previously repoted using a phosphoric acid etchant. A practical chemical dissolution method is described for quantitatively recovering zircon crystals from rock samples; this method should find application in fission track dating of even zircon poor rocks.  相似文献

We have developed a technique for revealing nuclear tracks in the mineral hibonite (CaAl12O19), found in the refractory inclusions from carbonaceous chondrites. The tracks in hibonitesfrom Murchison carbonaous chondrite are dominated by fission tracks from244Pu (constituting more than 90% of the total). The measured uranium contents in these crystals range from 1.2 to 62 ppb. We deduce that the average value for the244Pu/238U ratio in most of the Murchison hibonites at the time of track retention is0.022 ± 0.011.  相似文献

Nuclear tracks were studied in olivine and merrillite (phosphate previously called whitlockite) from the Marjalahti pallasite. The merrillite contains an important fission contribution due mainly to the spontaneous decay of now extinct244Pu. The U contents of 29 merrillite grains range from 60 to 140 ppb (median value: 85 ppb). Assuming a reasonable fractionation temperature of ~ 1750 K for the pre-pallasitic material, a lower limit of ~ 5 K/Myr is obtained for the cooling rate, in strong contrast with the previous metallographic result (~ 0.5 K/Myr). This disagreement, together with those observed in the case of mesosiderites, strengthens the need for a revision of the metallographic method of retracing the cooling histories of meteorites, as suggested by Narayan and Goldstein [31].  相似文献

Whitlockites have been extracted from the Bondoc mesosiderite and found to contain ~(0.7–2.7) × 106 cm?2 of spontaneous-fission tracks. Thermal-neutron irradiation of these crystals along with terrestrial apatite age standards, and measurement of the track densities so induced, lead to the determination of a whitlockite track-retention age of 2.68 (±0.30) Gyr for Bondoc, which is essentially independent of the initial (Pu/U) ratio. This young age is in qualitative, and, within the experimental uncertainties, in quantitative, agreement with the slow cooling rates determined for many mesosiderites [1,2] and specifically for Bondoc [6] from Ni distributions in the metal phase.  相似文献

A rhyolitic lava flow from Basiluzzo islet (Aeolian Islands), has been analysed with the Fission tracks (FT) and 40Ar–39Ar methods on glass, and with the U/Th method on whole rock to constrain its age and to compare the behaviour of different dating methodologies on glass samples late Quaternary in age. Laser 40Ar–39Ar total fusion analyses were performed on populations of grains. Due to the low yields of radiogenic 40Ar the age data are characterised by very high errors. The weighted average of the ages of the whole population is 55.7 ± 8.7 ka (MSWD = 0.7). The isochron age calculated on all points is 40.6 ± 11.4 ka (MSWD = 0.6), with an initial 40Ar/36Ar ratio of 297.8 ± 1.8; the isochron is characterised by very little spread among points. The procedure named ‘point-counting technique’ was adopted in FT dating. Spontaneous track mean size resulted reduced by around 20% compared to induced tracks, which indicates that the determined FT age, 28.6 ± 3.6 ka, is a reduced age, due to a certain amount of track annealing. For this reason the plateau technique for correcting thermally lowered ages was applied. We determined a plateau age (commonly assumed as a reliable estimate of the glass formation age) of 43.4 ± 7.1 ka. Four sub-samples of whole rock from Basiluzzo lava flow have been analysed using U/Th isochron method. The 238U/232Th and 230Th/232Th activity ratios of sub-samples have been determined by alpha counting and plotted on an isochron diagram. The resulting age is 46 ± 8 ka and the 234U/238U activity ratios are always close to one, demonstrating that no significant processes of alteration have occurred. The relatively high error associated with the age is due to a low fractionation of U/Th ratio in the analysed whole rocks. The ages obtained with different methods, 43.4 ± 7.1 ka (FT plateau age), 40.6 ± 11.4 ka (40Ar–39Ar isochron age of all grains), and 46 ± 8 ka (U/Th isochron) agree at the 1σ level, excluding a Holocene age for this sample. This could be valuable information for the Department of Civil Protection because it seems to mitigate the potential risk for present volcanic activity in the area. All ages are affected by very high analytical errors, which are due to the characteristics of the material analysed. Young ages result in low tracks numbers (FT dating) and barely detectable amounts of radiogenic 40Ar in the presence of high atmospheric contamination (40Ar–39Ar dating). Stratigraphic successions without strict chronologic constraints might however benefit even from age data with low precision.  相似文献

Detrital microcline grains from sedimentary strata preserve a record of thermal evolution in the temperature range ~ 100° to 200°C which can be revealed by40Ar/39Ar age spectrum analysis. Microcline separates from deep drill hole intersections with Eocene to Miocene sediments in the Basin and Tejon Blocks of the southern San Joaquin Valley, California, analysed by the age spectrum approach show radiogenic40Ar (40Ar*) gradients that record both the slow cooling of the uplifting sediment source ~ 65 Ma ago, and a recent thermal event. This information, in conjunction with the observation of fission track annealing in the coexisting apatites, allows estimation of the temperature-time conditions of this thermal event at about 140°C for ~ 200 ka. Present and paleotemperature data is in accord with heating related to several kilometers of Pleistocene sediment deposition. Heat flow calculations suggest that this recent subsidence has depressed the thermal gradient from about 30°C km?1 to the present apparent gradient of 24°C km?1.40Ar/39Ar analysis of detrital microcline crystals yields thermochronological information in the temperature-time range of petroleum maturation and provides this technique with potential as both a useful exploration tool and as a means of probing the fundamental geodynamic processes of basin evolution.  相似文献

A thermal event reduces the number of previously registered fission tracks in a mineral dependent upon the track retention properties of the individual mineral. Apatite, sphene and zircon have retention properties over a wide range of temperatures (from 100° to 550°C); apatite data reveal information at lowest temperatures while sphene and zircon data are useful for higher temperatures.Thermal events within this temperature range of 100°C to about 550°C are suitable for study with this technique. The age of the event is determined from samples in which the fission tracks are completely erased, while minerals containing partially removed (erased) tracks provide information on the temperatures occurring during the thermal event. As a test case, the analysis of the temperatures developed by the meteorite impact which produced the Ries crater at 14.7 m.y. ago is presented.

The decay constantf238) for the spontaneous fission of238U was re-determined by means of a man-made uranium glass of known age (126 yr). The spontaneous U fission tracks that had accumulated since the date of manufacture were counted on internal faces of the glass with an error of less than 1.7%. No thermal annealing of the spontaneous tracks was observed. The U content was determined by induced fission tracks. The value obtained forλf238 is(8.57 ± 0.42) × 10?17yr?1. Main sources of error are the date of glass melting and the determination of the thermal neutron dose.  相似文献

The preatmospheric mass of Angra dos Reis is estimated to be about 80 kg, based on cosmic ray track densities of 1?3 × 106 cm?2 in feldspars, olivines, and pyroxenes. The244Pu-fission track densities in pyroxenes and adjacent olivine-feldspar track detectors, as well as in whitlockites and adjacent pyroxene-olivine detectors are about 20 and 280 × 106 cm?2 respectively. These values correspond exactly to the244Pu-fission xenon contents in the two minerals. This suggests an almost instantaneous cooling (>70 K per m.y.) of the Angra dos Reis material 4.55 b.y. ago. This fast cooling is the reason for a quantitative4He retention since that time. If the4He excess found in Angra dos Reis is a real effect, the source of this excess remains unknown.  相似文献

Nuclear track records in fourteen samples taken from different locations of a cut-slab of the Abee enstatite chondrite were studied to determine its pre-atmospheric mass and to delineate its cosmic ray exposure history. The measured track densities in different samples range from 104 to 106 cm?2. No significant variations in track densities for individual grains from a given location was found. Excess tracks of fissionogenic origin were found near the grain edges, and across cleavage planes in eight enstatite grains out of ~ 300 grains analysed in the present work. The compaction age of the meteorite could not be obtained due to the absence of suitable oldhamite-enstatite contacts in thick sections. The track data rule out pre-irradiation of any of the analysed samples with shielding less than a few tens of centimeter. The iso-track-density contours on the plane of the slab imply an asymmetric ablation of the Abee chondrite during its atmospheric transit. A spherical body having a radius of ~ 30 cm closely approximates the pre-atmospheric shape and size of the Abee meteorite. The mass loss during ablation was ~ 70% of the original mass.  相似文献

K, Rb, Sr contents and Sr isotopic composition are reported for (1) the coexisting silicate minerals of a spinel lherzolite xenolith, (2) the whole rock xenolith, and (3) the host alkali basalt from the Pleistocene-Recent San Quintin volcanic field in Baja California. The data also include major element chemistry of the four mineral phases of the xenolith. The olivine-spinel and pyroxene thermometers indicate that the last temperature of equilibration of the xenolith in the upper mantle was about 1100°C.K, Rb, and Sr abundances are extremely low in the minerals of the xenolith, in contrast with the general enrichment of Ca, Al, Fe and Na in the whole xenolith. Furthermore, the abundance levels and the87Sr/86Sr ratios of the minerals are greatly lowered by surface washing of the minerals in2N cold HCl for three minutes. It is suggested that this is due to grain boundary and surface contamination of the minerals which took place in the upper mantle by a vapor phase deposition, prior to the inclusion of the xenolith in the basalt. The source of the vapor phase must have a87Sr/86Sr ratio greater than 0.7070, the highest measured ratio in the unwashed orthopyroxene. Sr in the host alkali basalt has a87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.7031, unrelated to the grain boundary material. The acid-washed minerals, the unwashed minerals and the acid-washed whole rock xenolith show a scatter on a87Rb/86Sr versus87Sr/86Sr diagram. However, the surface-washed minerals and the whole rock alone define a straight-line relationship with a positive slope, which corresponds to an age3.4 ± 0.3AE(2σ) for the rock and an initial87Sr/86Sr of0.70057 ± 0.0004 (2σ). The age of 3.4 AE for the lherzolite is interpreted as its last involvement in a small degree of partial melting and the consequent extreme depletion of the large ion lithophile elements from the constituent minerals.  相似文献

Tracing the sediment delivery from its source terrain to its ultimate sink envisage multiple factors that play a vital role in understanding present day erosional engine. To accomplish this,it is significant to distinguish the variable end-members contributing to the basin. The findings from the study of dryland coastal fluvial regime in Kachchh(Western India),which is one of the end members contributing to the Gulf of Kachchh coast(partial sink) and finally to the Arabian Sea(ultimate sink) have been presented here.Multi-proxy sediment provenance proxies such as grain-size,clay minerals, geochemistry and magnetic minerals have been employed to evaluate the provenance discriminating characteristics of the Kachchh dryland fluvial system and factors influencing them. The results of different proxies indicate that the provenance signatures of uplands are quite characteristic with magnetic susceptibility(χ) values of 20×10~(-7)m~3kg~(-1) and smectite(S)/kaolinite(K) ratio between 0.26 and 0.49.The middle reaches show marked increase in magnetic mineral concentration with χ values(140×10~(-7)m~3kg~(-1))and S/K ratio(4.92),while the estuarine tract shows χ values(80×10~(-7)m~3kg~(-1)),S/K ratio(1.90) and, characteristic heavy minerals(i.e.mica minerals),probably reflect the interplay between land and sea oscillations.Major sources of sediments within catchment scale were identified, viz.,upland sedimentary rocks(Juran and Bhuj Formation sandstone-shale) and middle reaches volcanic(Deccan Trap Formation basalt) rocks. The present study draw cautions in provenance of sediment discrimination in areas influenced by Deccan basalt that has the overwhelming sediment delivery and a comparatively subdued effects of other provenance signatures. The studied proxies of mineralogy of clays, magnetic minerals and geochemistry of heavy and major elements serve as the potential for fingerprint of sediment source regions and hence behold a strong position in source to sink studies globally.  相似文献

The times at which phyllosilicate matrix and euhedral olivines became associated have been determined for five C2 meteorites. The ages, calculated from fission track densities on crystal surfaces, are based on an initial244Pu/238U ratio in the matrix material of 0.0154 at 4.6 b.y., and range from 4.22 b.y. for Nogoya to 4.42 b.y. for Murray. Unless the initial244Pu/238U ratio was less than 0.004, the meteorites cannot have existed in their present form for 4.6 × 109 yr. The measured ages place limits on the time when pre-compaction effects such as micrometeorite craters and solar flare tracks were produced, and they may approximately date the formation of the olivine crystals themselves.  相似文献

Recently obtained data on oxygen diffusion in feldspars, quartz, and hornblende permit the prediction of the apparent18O16O temperatures that would be measured in a rock that consisted only of those three minerals, and cooled slowly from high temperature. The computed temperatures would be based on the differences in the18O16O ratios between coexisting pairs of minerals. The present calculation takes into account the diffusion rates for oxygen as a function of temperature, the cooling rate of the rock, the mineral grain sizes, and the mode of the rock. For mineral grains 1 mm in radius, and a cooling rate of 10°C/m.y., the minimum difference in apparent temperature between quartz-feldspar and feldspar-hornblende pairs will be 115°C, despite the assumption of a normal, uneventful, slow cooling history to room temperature. Further, the apparent quartz-hornblende temperature will range over 30°C (590–620°C) depending on the mode of the rock. For a cooling rate of 1000°C/m.y., the apparent difference in temperature can be as much as 400°C. Consequently, consistency in temperatures obtained by oxygen isotope analysis should not be expected in most high-grade metamorphic rocks or igneous rocks which are cooled slowly. Departures from the pattern of temperatures obtained in this model would imply a very rapid quench from high temperature, or a complex history for the rock. For some minerals, including hornblende, the relation between temperature and the equilibrium fractionation of oxygen isotopes between coexisting phases has been derived from observed relations in natural specimens. The choice of the specimens used for such calibrations needs to be re-evaluated in light of these findings. This may result in a change in the equilibrium equation constants. An example from the literature, the San Jose tonalite, Baja California, Mexico, was modelled and yieldsδ18O concentrations in the minerals that correspond closely with the measured values. This suggests that the model used is appropriate, that the rock has had a simple thermal history, and that it cooled at 100–200°C/m.y. over the temperature range 800–500°C. The set of paleotemperatures obtained for a rock will, in general, yield neither the mineral closure temperatures nor the formation or crystallization temperatures. On the other hand, the cooling rate of the rock may be derived from the data. This, in turn, may have important tectonic implications with regard to denudation and uplift rates.  相似文献

Fossil fission tracks have been found in a coarse-grained white inclusion of the Allende chondrite. Tracks are present in excess of those produced by238U spontaneous fission and cosmic rays. The ratio of excess tracks to238U tracks is ~20, intermediate to ratios previously observed in meteorites but much lower than might be expected in light of the high initial244Pu/U ratio measured in these inclusions from Xe isotope ratios.  相似文献
