Classical nova outbursts occur in binary systems containing a white dwarf accretor and a Roche-lobe-filling main-sequence star. The outburst is due to a thermonuclear runaway in the accreted material on the surface of the white dwarf, and results in the ejection of up to 10–4 M of material at velocities of several hundred to a few thousand kilometres per second. There is now strong evidence that the mass ejection takes place via a wind with secularly increasing velocity. The fast ejecta catches up with slower moving material ejected earlier in the outburst, forming a layer of shock-heated gas which gives rise to a short burst of soft X-ray emission. This emission was observed in V838 Her (Nova Herculis 1991), and was succesfully accounted for by the interacting winds model. In this paper, we present 2.5-D numerical hydrodynamics calculations of interacting winds in novae which consider the effects of the binary system on shaping the mass-loss, and show that many of the features seen in the optical shells of novae many years after outburst can be accounted for. This author is supported by a PPARC research assistantship  相似文献

Space densities and galacticz-distributions of novae, recurrent novae, dwarf novae and symbiotic stars are newly determined and discussed in the context of earlier determinations. The data are then compared with the distributions of single and binary stars of possibly related types (late type giants, Mira variables, Algol systems, W UMa systems).Novae and dwarf novae have similar distributions, those of fairly young stellar populations. The observed space density of potential novae (novalike objects) indicates that the mean recurrence time of novae might be as small as a few hundred years, which leads, with given nova shell masses and mass transfer rates in the minimum stage, to a secular decrease of the masses of the components undergoing nova outbursts.Recurrent novae and symbiotic stars have distributions of older stellar populations, similar to those of late type giants and Mira variables. On the basis of galactic distribution, novae and dwarf novae are closely related and may be final stages of W UMa systems, as well as progenitors of supernovae of type I. A small fraction of W UMa systems seems to belong to an older population. If evolutionary transitions between these types of stars can be substantiated, the presence of a minority of novae and dwarf novae in globular clusters and of supernovae I in elliptical galaxies can be explained.Due to the lack of sufficiently well determined space distributions of Algol binaries, the suggestion that long-period Algol systems might be the progenitors of cataclysmic binaries can as yet neither be substantiated nor refuted. A very high space density of long-period Algol systems in the solar neighbourhood is derived. The observed space density of cataclysmic binaries could be explained by the transformation of a small percentage of the long-period Algol systems by common envelope evolution.Paper presented at the Lembang-Bamberg IAU Colloquium No. 80 on Double Stars: Physical Properties and Generic Relations, held at Bandung, Indonesia, 3–7 June, 1983.  相似文献

We review the recent observational and theoretical studies of the nova outburst. The observational studies have not only identified a new class of novae but theoretical simulations of this class have been found to be in excellent agreement with the observations. This new class consists of outbursts occurring on ONeMg white dwarfs in close binary systems in contrast to the other outbursts which are occurring on CO white dwarfs. We also review the effects of the + nuclei and show how their presence has a major effect on the evolution.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. We present a simple model for interactions between the slow and fast phases of mass ejection in classical nova outbursts. A situation develops in which a layer of hot gas sandwiched between two shocks progresses through the slow wind until it blows-out, expanding and cooling adiabatically. We calculate the X-ray emission from this model and find that the dynamical timescale is at least as important as the radiative cooling time in determining the form of the X-ray light curves. Models of this type may help to explain the origin of X-ray emission in some classical nova outbursts. This author is supported by the SERC  相似文献

We study the so-called inverse planetary problem (i.e., given the distances from the centre, masses, and radii of, say, three planets of a planetary system, find the optimum polytropic index, mass, and radius of their star, and also other quantities of interest, which depend either explicitly or implicitly on the foregoing ones, e.g., central and mean density, central and mean pressure, central and mean temperature, etc.) for the system of satellites of Jupiter. In particular, Jupiter is considered as star and its satellites as planets of a proper planetary system, which is then treated numerically on the basis of the so-called global polytropic model, developed recently by the first author.  相似文献

The structure of rotating magnetic polytropes is considered in Roche approximation. Investigation of the influence of poloidal as well as toroidal magnetic fields on the conditions of the beginning of matter outflow due to rotational instability is carried out. The influence of the turbulent convection and twisting of magnetic force-lines on the time of smoothing of differential rotation is considered. The estimate of the magneto-turbulence energy generated by differential rotation is presented. Both maximum possible energy output and duration of the quasi-statical evolution phase up to the appearance of hydrodynamic instability due to the effects of general relativity are calculated for supermassive magnetic polytropes of index three with uniform or differential rotation. The radius-mass relation is obtained for supermassive differentially-rotating magnetic polytropes referring to the longest part of the quasi-statistical evolution stage; some consequences are pointed out, including the period-luminosity relation. The evolution of the considered models of supermassive rotating magnetic polytropes with different character of rotation and different geometry of a magnetic field is discussed. The results obtained are summarized in the last section.

This article reviews observational data on cataclysmic variables (CVs) whose orbital periods fall within the so-called period gap between 2 and 3 hours. The orbital period distribution of cataclysmic variables and the filling of the period gap by various types of CVs are demonstrated. Roughly half the stars in the period gap are magnetic, of which the majority are polars, while the other half (except a few stars) are SU UMa-type stars characterized by superbursts and superhumps. It is also interesting to note that those intermediate polars whose periods fall within the gap are among the stars with constant superhumps. The height above the galactic plane is estimated for the nonmagnetic stars and it is shown that, contrary to predictions, the stars in the period gap do not belong (except for one) to the spherical component of the galaxy. Light curves, some characteristic times, burst amplitudes, etc. are given for a number of Su UMa-type stars observed by the authors. The evolution of superbursts from the stars NY Ser, V725 Aql, and Var73 Dra is described. Observational data are presented on the classical nova V Per, a star whose period lies right in the middle of the period gap but whose status (magnetic or nonmagnetic) has still unclear.

Observed characteristics of outbursts of eight dwarf novae are compared with those predicted for the two types of outbursts by the disk instability theory. OY Car, U Gem, VW Hyi, and WX Hyi are identified as Type A, while RX And, SS Cyg, AH Her, and CN Ori — as Type B.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. A classical nova may accrete a non-homogeneousenvelope, which can result in the ignition of a local thermonuclear runaway on the surface of the white dwarf. We studied the propagation of thermal flows along the meridian in the hydrogen rich envelope, to find the conditions under which a thermonuclear runaway is not spherically symmetric. We included mass accretion and tested the effect of temperature inhomogeneities in the secular evolution of the envelope, supposing perturbations with different wavelengths, ranging from very small to comparable with the radius of the white dwarf. The calculations were stopped at the onset of a thermonuclear runaway, when the hydrodynamic expansion starts. We found the ranges of accretion rates and masses of white dwarfs for which the runaway ignites locally. The propagation time of the runaway along the meridian may be as long as days and weeks. Local thermonuclear runaways can explain the asymmetries and inhomogeneities of the nova shells and account for the slow rise time to maximum (about one week) of many novae.  相似文献

The structure of optically thick mass-losing envelopes of white dwarfs are studied in relation to nova outbursts. A sequence of steady mass-loss solutions is constructed for a nova outburst from the maximum photospheric radius to the disappearance. Much of mass of the envelope will be blown out.Paper presented at the Lembang-Bamberg IAU Colloquium No. 80 on Double Stars: Physical Properties and Generic Relations, held at Bandung, Indonesia, 3–7 June, 1983.  相似文献

The initial discovery of soft X-rays from Nova Muscae 1983 was followed by eight additional observations of the three brightest novae whose outburst stage coincided with the lifetime ofEXOSAT satellite; namely three more observations of Nova Muscae 1983, three observations of Nova Vulpeculae 1984#1 (PW Vul), and two observations of Nova Vulpeculae 1984#2. Through these observations we sampled the soft X-ray light curve of classical novae from optical maximum to 900 days after. The observations seem best explained by the constant bolometric luminosity model of a hot white dwarf remnant. Although the measurements suffer from limited statistics, very broad energy bandpass, and incomplete sampling of any single nova, their constraints on the theories of nova outburst are significant. One constraint is that the lifetime of the white dwarf remnant in Nova Muscae 1983 is 2 to 3 years, which leads to the conclusion that the burned envelope massM burn should be of the order of . The second constraint is that the maximum temperature, of the white dwarf remnant should approximately be within 200 000 K to 400 000 K. We estimate that a white dwarf remnant evolving like the central star of a planetary nebula, with core mass of 0.8 to 0.9M , core luminosity of 2×104 L , and envelope mass of 10–6 M , can explain the general characteristics of the X-ray measurements for Nova Muscae 1983. In order to have 1.1M core mass, estimated from the early observations of bolometric luminosity in the UV to infrared range, a wind withM5×10–7 M yr–1 appears to be necessary. The few observations of Nova Vulpeculae 1984 #1 and Nova Vulpeculae 1984#2, during the first year after outburst, give a risetime and intensity that is consistent with a constant bolometric luminosity model.Paper presented at the IAU Colloquium No. 93 on Cataclysmic Variables. Einstein's equations of general relativity are solved in terms of gravitational potential derivatives, withT equal to mass and/or field energy such thatT 0 outside a body. The line element equation then describes the variance of test particle internal geometrical structure and time-rate due to work done in a field, not the space-time curvature. Specific properties of gravitational fields and bodies come from this new solution: (a) The gravitational field consists of electromagnetic spin 2 gravitons which produce the gravitational force through the magnetic vector. (b) The gravitational mass is the Newtonian mass, not the relativistic mass, of a moving body. (c) An action principle exists in gravitation theory. (d) Attractive gravity exists between matter and antimatter. (e) Unification with quantum physics appears possible.  相似文献

We emphasize the sharp distinctions between different one-body gravitational trajectories made by the ratio of time averagesR(t)E kin/E pot.R is calculated as a function of the eccentricity (e) and of the energy (E). Whent, independently ofe andE, R1/2 for closed orbits (this clearly illustrates the fulfillment of the virial theorem in classical mechanics); whereasR1, at any time, for open orbits.  相似文献

On the basis of more abundant data a relation logPV/logR for cepheid variables (Fernie, 1965) is constructed. A linear relation between logP V and logR for classical cepheids is found, which perhaps has a break at R=10R . On the logR/logP diagram thes-cepheids (Efremov, 1968) show a distinct sequence. Alls-cepheids present a relative variation of the radii R/R0.075. The existence of non-s-cepheids with R/R0.075 raises a point about the evolutionary place of these stars (see Efremov, 1968). One could suppose that cepheids with logP>1.1 pulsate in the first overtone.  相似文献
