NASA and ESA have outlined visions for solar system exploration that will include a series of lunar robotic precursor missions to prepare for, and support a human return to the Moon, and future human exploration of Mars and other destinations, including possibly asteroids. One of the guiding principles for exploration is to pursue compelling scientific questions about the origin and evolution of life. The search for life on objects such as Mars will require careful operations, and that all systems be sufficiently cleaned and sterilized prior to launch to ensure that the scientific integrity of extraterrestrial samples is not jeopardized by terrestrial organic contamination. Under the Committee on Space Research’s (COSPAR’s) current planetary protection policy for the Moon, no sterilization procedures are required for outbound lunar spacecraft, nor is there a different planetary protection category for human missions, although preliminary COSPAR policy guidelines for human missions to Mars have been developed. Future in situ investigations of a variety of locations on the Moon by highly sensitive instruments designed to search for biologically derived organic compounds would help assess the contamination of the Moon by lunar spacecraft. These studies could also provide valuable “ground truth” data for Mars sample return missions and help define planetary protection requirements for future Mars bound spacecraft carrying life detection experiments. In addition, studies of the impact of terrestrial contamination of the lunar surface by the Apollo astronauts could provide valuable data to help refine future Mars surface exploration plans for a human mission to Mars.  相似文献

Fourier analysis performed on the data of three balloon observations (20–200 keV) of Cygnus X-1 has shown a significant peak of the power spectral density at about 17 s. Possible periodic pulsations, sustained over periods of at least one hour, could be responsible for the peak we detected. The oscillations observed recently in the transient X-ray source A1118-61 are attributed to variations in the magnetic activity of a rotating white dwarf similar to the 11-year solar activity cycle. The MSSL X-ray detectors onCopernicus have been used to study a number of extragalactic objects. At least three classes of unresolved sources are found and we suggest that accretion may be the dominant mechanism. The transient X-ray source Ariel 1118-61 has a period of 6.75 min. We review possible models for the X-ray source and in particular we consider orbital and rotational origins for the periodicity. A rocket observation of cosmic soft X-rays suggests the existence of transient, recurrent soft X-ray sources which are found variable during the flight time of the rocket. Some of the soft X-ray sources thus far reported are considered to be of this time. We present the results of a search for X-ray emission in the energy range 0.2–0.28 keV and 1–7 keV from a number of radio pulsars, including Crab, Vela and the binary pulsar PSR 1913+16, using the soft X-ray experiment aboard ANS. Except for the Crab no pulsed flux has been found. From the Vela pulsar we have detected continuous flux in agreement with earlier observations. A first estimate of the energy that reaches the Earth's surface and is produced by the inverse Compton effect between the electrons in the Van Allen belt and the solar flux was made. Since in the belt there are electrons with energies between 0.5 and 7 MeV, it was possible to use the Klein-Nishina formula in an approximate form and estimate the energy that is Compton scattered by all the electrons in the Van Allen belt by using Vette, Lucero and Bright's model. The result was compared (a) with the measurements of the continuum in the regions of soft X-rays, and (b) with the energy that is produced by the trapped electrons through the synchrotron mechanism.This paper was presented at the COSPAR meeting held in leningrad on May 20–29, 1970.  相似文献

The HEOS detector measures the mass and speed of micrometeoroids in the Earth-Moon system. They are detected by the plasma produced by particle impacts on the sensor. During 2 yr of data collection 384 particles have been registered. As shown earlier (COSPAR 1973), they can be divided into 3 categories according to their temporal distribution: particles that are (1) randomly distributed or (2) appear in “groups” or (3) appear in “swarms” In this paper the origin of the groups and swarms is discussed. For this purpose the article orbits with respect to the Earth and the Moon were traced back. The results imply a lunar origin of the groups, whereas the swarms are correlated with the vicinity of the Earth. In addition, the dependence of the cumulative flux upon the detector's viewing direction indicates clearly an anisotropic particle flux.  相似文献

Years of preparation within the framework of the Flare Build-up Study culminated with intensive observations of solar flares during the Solar Maximum Year (1979–1981). Scientists operating several spacecraft and roughly 70 ground-based observatories participated in an internationally coordinated effort to observe flares with higher spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution over a wider range of wavelengths than heretofore. The FBS stimulated important advances in theories of magnetic reconnection and the growth of plasma instabilities under preflare circumstances. A series of international FBS workshops facilitated data exchanges and collaborative studies for interpreting and synthesizing the wealth of new information about flares. The FBS ended officially at the Symposium on Synopsis of the Solar Maximum Analysis held 2–5 July, 1986 at the COSPAR meeting in Toulouse, France. Here we summarize highlights of its progress towards an understanding of the storage and release of preflare energy.  相似文献

Fast time spectral measurements of a gamma-ray burst acquired with a satellite-borne cooled germanium spectrometer during the 18 December, 1972 event indicate significant spectral variations during the course of the event. These data are compared with the results of other exerimenters providing additional evidence for spectral variations on short time scales. We investigate the solar flare occurrence rate and daily flare probability in terms of the sunspot classification supplemented with sunspot area and its changes. For this we use the NOAA active region data and GOES solar flare data for 15 years (from January 1996 to December 2010). We consider the most flare-productive 11 sunspot classes in the McIntosh sunspot group classification. Sunspot area and its changes can be a proxy of magnetic flux and its emergence/cancellation, respectively. We classify each sunspot group into two sub-groups by its area: ??Large?? and ??Small??. In addition, for each group, we classify it into three sub-groups according to sunspot area changes: ??Decrease??, ??Steady??, and ??Increase??. As a result, in the case of compact groups, their flare occurrence rates and daily flare probabilities noticeably increase with sunspot group area. We also find that the flare occurrence rates and daily flare probabilities for the ??Increase?? sub-groups are noticeably higher than those for the other sub-groups. In case of the (M+X)-class flares in the ??Dkc?? group, the flare occurrence rate of the ??Increase?? sub-group is three times higher than that of the ??Steady?? sub-group. The mean flare occurrence rates and flare probabilities for all sunspot groups increase with the following order: ??Decrease??, ??Steady??, and ??Increase??. Our results statistically demonstrate that magnetic flux and its emergence enhance the occurrence of major solar flares.  相似文献

A number of models have been proposed for the observed cosmic gamma-ray bursts. A class of such models involves the use of magnetic energy as the principal source of energy required for the bursts. In this case, arguments are presented to show that degenerate stars are favored. Mechanisms for magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in white dwarfs and neutron stars are discussed. In the record of the balloon observation which was performed on 27 September, 1970, a transient burst of X-rays was found. This event is concluded to be a cosmic gamma-ray burst of a smaller size or of a larger distance compared to the Vela bursts observed over the X-ray energy range. The energy spectrum is consistent with that of some of the Vela bursts. The time profile of the event is qualitatively similar to the 27 April, 1972 event studied by Apollo 16. Svalgaard and Cliver (Astrophys. J. Lett. 661, L203, 2007) proposed that the solar-wind magnetic-field strength [B] at Earth has a ??floor?? value of ??4.6 nT in yearly averages, which is approached but not broached at solar minima. They attributed the floor to a constant baseline solar open flux. In both 2008 and 2009, the notion of such a floor was undercut by annual B averages of ??4 nT. Here we present a revised view of both the level and the concept of the floor. Two independent correlations indicate that B has a floor of ??2.8 nT in yearly averages. These are i) a relationship between solar polar-field strength and yearly averages of B for the last four 11-year minima (B MIN), and ii) a precursor relationship between peak sunspot number for cycles 14??C?23 and B MIN at their preceding minima. These correlations suggest that at 11-year minima, B consists of i) a floor of ??2.8 nT, and ii) a component primarily due to the solar polar fields that varies from ??0 nT to ??3 nT. The solar polar fields provide the ??seed?? for the subsequent sunspot maximum. Removing the ??2.8 nT floor from B MIN brings the percentage decrease in B between the 1996 and 2009 minima into agreement with the corresponding decrease in solar polar-field strength. Based on a decomposition of the solar wind (from 1972??C?2009) into high-speed streams, coronal mass ejections, and slow solar wind, we suggest that the source of the floor in B is the slow solar wind. During 2009, Earth was in slow solar-wind flows ??70% of the time. We propose that the floor corresponds to a baseline (non-cyclic or ground state) open solar flux of ??8×1013 Wb, which originates in persistent small-scale (supergranular and granular) field.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of the investigation on the short term X-ray emission characteristics of Cyg X-1 in the 20–150 keV range. The observations were made with balloon-borne oriented scintillation telescope and the flights were conducted from Hyderabad, India. The source was tracked over a duration of 1 hr that enabled detailed observations with time resolution of the order of 1 min. Fluctuations in the intensity of Cyg X-1 with time scales of the order of minutes have been detected besides short-term flare-like enhancements. Up to 1039 ergs of elastic energy might be released in a neutron star crustquake. The sound waves produced by such a quake will transform into a shock near the surface owing to the dramatic decrease in density. A thin surface layer will then be blown off radiating -rays.
